After all that fun we've got another installment of Security Bits with Bart Busschots.

A start-up has launched the world's first foldable smartphone. Royole, a California-based company that specializes in flexible screens, showcased the smartphone at a conference in Beijing, China. Called the FlexPai, the smartphone retails at around $1,290 to $1,870. Those who ordered a FlexPai unit will get their hands on the device starting in the latter part of December. The FlexPai can be folded in half. When unfolded, its screen measures 7.8 inches, allowing it to function as a tablet. When folded, it turns into a smartphone that has three screens: on the front, at the back, and on its hinge. The device runs on Water operating system (OS), a custom version of the Android OS. The Water OS enables the smartphone's front and back screens to function as two independent phones when folded. With this feature, both screens can display two different activities at the same time. The hinge screen, on the other hand, displays users' calls, notifications, and messages. According to Royole, the FlexPai's display is made of a thin plastic material, making it more resistant to scratches and cracks. The device is durable enough to be folded more than 200,000 times without breaking. The FlexPai is a major breakthrough for Royole. With the device's launch, the company has surpassed technology giants in releasing foldable smartphones. However, Royole might not stay ahead of the game for long. Samsung, LG, and Huawei have reportedly begun developing their own foldable smartphones. Samsung is expected to unveil its foldable Galaxy F model in 2019, while LG and Huawei also announced 2019 release dates for their own versions.
Smartphones that open up into mini-tablets are on the way, thanks to several companies gearing up to expand the traditional rectangular slab into new form factors. Samsung had a big event to introduce its bendy Galaxy X, even though a smaller company called Royole jumped out in front of the pack with its own FlexiPai device a few weeks ago. Nedávno podobný produkt odhalila i firma Royole. Budou ohýbací smartphony přínosným trhákem?

Recorded 4th November 2018 This week of course Apple had a keynote event in New York and revealed a host of items, some expected (iPad), some only hoped for (Mac Minis and MacBook Airs)... Also they had an earnings call - not something we tend to get overly wrapped up in on this show but there were a couple of points of interest. Unsrprisingly there wasn't really much other news of note to us but even so we run extra long... 'Avengers: Infinity War' Box Office: A Rundown of the Records Broken 'Avengers: Infinity War' Box Office: A Rundown of the Records BrokenDisney and Marvel continue to push the superhero envelope at the box office, with Avengers: Infinity War serving up their latest victory. The mega-mashup smashed a number of records in its global debut over the weekend, less than three months after Marvel's Black Panther began its own historic run. Disney's VR 'force jacket' sends snakes wriggling over your body It was put together by Disney Research, alongside MIT. It's essentially a jacket stuffed with airbags and sensors that can be calibrated to simulate a number of different physical experiences. Disney highlights a few: the feeling of being punched, hugged, or having snakes slither all over your body. (I saw that we doubled up on this one in the News stories, so I dropped it to the bottom of news so we can do it there and just expand/opine, or we can push it to a longer mini feature. Whatever you want to do.) Royole Moon 3D Mobile Theater Review When you wear glasses like this, you are presented with the equivalent of sitting relatively close to a large projection screen, with your peripheral vision essentially filled by the image. Royole suggests that the Moon provides the equal of an 800-inch curved screen (about 66 feet) viewed from about an equal distance away. That's close to standard IMAX territory. The experience is akin to watching my 92-inch projection screen from a fairly tight 10 feet away, if not closer. In other words, the same highly immersive quality we attribute to the front projection/cinema experience is apparent in spades here and is made all the more so by the addition of some good-quality earphones.
Millions of ambitious young people wake each morning wanting to "change the world," but few have as ambitious a goal as Bill Liu, founder of Chinese flexible display company Royole Corporation. If Thomas Friedman argued that "the world is flat," then Bill Liu's mission is to bend, curve and roll up that world. Liu founded Royole in 2012 after gaining a Ph.D in electrical engineering from Stanford University at age 26. Five years later, the company provides flexible display solutions to various industries and has launched several consumer products, including a smartphone that can be rolled into a bracelet, the first of its type readily available to consumers. "Flexible display electronics are a very new way for people to interact with consumer and electronics information," Liu, now 34, told China Money Network during an exclusive interview at the company's headquarters in Shenzhen. "I believe flexible displays could be everywhere in the future, because it is convenient, easy to use, and provides more robust design possibilities." Royole is venturing into a new market with high potential. If any type of digital display, from computers, to phones and TVs, can be bent or rolled up, then everything from wristwatches to car dashboards can be completely re-imagined. Watch China Money TV's Visit To Royole's Shenzhen Headquarters: This alternate, flexible future is also exciting tech giants like Samsung and LG. Both are mass producing flexible displays for use on their mobile phones, the Galaxy S7 Edge and the LG G Flex 2. Apple, reportedly, may be buying around 100 million flexible panels for its future iPhones. "Flexible display is a huge business opportunity enabling industries worth hundreds of billions of dollars," said a tech venture investor who preferred to remain anonymous. "Its applications in wearable devices, healthcare, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and fashion are exciting. Think about the possibilities if smartphones can wrap around your wrist and brands can display ads on your T-shirt." That potential has made Royole a magnet for venture investors, and as a result it is currently the world's most valuable tech start-up focused exclusively on this frontier industry. The company has raised over RMB2 billion, or nearly US$300 million, in five financing rounds since 2012, with its latest valuation at a hefty US$3 billion. The company already has over 700 intellectual properties under its name in the field of flexible displays. Royole's challenge, however, will be to turn ideas into breakthrough products, then into a scaleable and profitable businesses. It remains to be seen whether Royole's products can win over consumers. The company has one showroom in Beijing - with another opening in Shenzhen in October - where consumers can view its rollable mobile phone, called the FlexPhone, as well as a transparent keyboard that can be rolled into a pen-size container, and a foldable 3D virtual mobile theater in the form of a headset. Some of the products, such as the headset, are also sold online. Liu would not disclose details on how sales are trending, but he said people are looking forward to new technologies and products, and he is confident his company is building momentum. Royole's business-to-business segment also faces major hurdles, one of which is the protection of its IP. Liu explained during a TV show last month that Royole decided to build its own factory partly to meet growing demand, and partly over difficulty in finding a manufacturing partner with proper business terms to secure solid protection of its IP. The B2B business also depends on its clients' ability to apply the new technology into their own products. The company has signed strategic partnership agreements with Chinese sports goods retailer Li Ning Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Bus Group, China Southern Airlines, and the Shenzhen subsidiary of China Mobile, to explore how flexible displays could be utilized to create new products.
