Send us a textWe aren't here for wishful thinking—we stand for hope as action. Hope-centered leadership isn't about toxic positivity; it's about setting bold goals, creating real pathways, and owning the work. Inspired by Dr. Shane Lopez's research, we fuse agency, optimism, and accountability into an Ownership Mindset that fuels change. Without hope, schools spiral into stagnation and burnout. We'll break down the three essential drivers of hope—and the strategic actions you can take to embed them in your school. Leaders who clarify the vision, help people see multiple pathways to get there and keep people moving forward, create schools where students and educators achieve their full capabilities. The data doesn't lie—hope isn't just nice; it's necessary.*Related Episode*#122: Why Growth Mindset Isn't Enough: The Five Mindsets You Need to Drive ChangeResearch:Hope and School LeadershipInstilling Hope in StudentsUse this podcast for FREE PD! Welcome to Next Level: Good Vibes Only where Jessica and Darren Salquist share some awesomeness on HOPE. Let's create hope for ourselves and each other. Martin Luther King Jr had a dream. A dream that his "four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." A dream can be defined as a cherished aspiration, ambition. or ideal. He had hope that the future would allow for his dream to come true. He also put into action a plan to help cultivate that hope/dream. That is what hope takes, building a plan, knowing the obstacles will occur, work hard, never give up, making progress, building momentum and repeat. Shane Lopez, PhD. states "Hope is created moment to moment through our deliberate choices. It happens when we use our thoughts and feelings to temper our aversion to loss and actively pursue what is possible. When we choose hope, we define what matters to us most. We appreciate you listening in. Don't forget to like, review and share with this podcast with others. Through his research about hope, Shane Lopez determined that “hope is the belief that your future will be better than your present and you have the power to make it so.” While I love Shane's definition, I would add God into the equation. So, we, with God's help, have the power to create a future that is infinitely better than our present. With that in mind, we can no longer be powerless victims of our circumstances. Instead, we are co-creators with God. We can work hand in hand with the Creator to build lives filled with hope. But where do we begin? Listen in for perspective and practical tools. This week's SHINE Challenge: Write about one thing you hope for in as much detail as possible. Write about it as if it has already happened. You can use that vision to help you endure when things get tough. You can also use it to help you create, with God's help, the outcome you desire. Want to join the STAND movement? Did you know that there is an actual study of hope? Shane Lopez is the expert and shares his findings in his book Making Hope Happen. In this episode, Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton share the three-step process that will take you from feeling zero hope to becoming hopeful in a matter of minutes. Tune in to learn how a lack of hope can lead to many negative impacts on your life, such as depression and how you can use a process to help to remedy this. ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/ CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/ Like what you hear? How hopeful do you feel about the future? Does it show in your interactions with youth? I think we can all use a healthy dose of hope these days, but we're not talking about it enough. We look at the events of the world today and we stay quiet, feeling like we need to grin and bear it. That's not true. If you're struggling, others are struggling. And our youth need to hear stories of love, compassion, and hope. It's our responsibility as educators to do just that. This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Lindsay Recknell, a certified expert in hope. She's sharing why this is so important and the brain science to back up the power of hope. This isn't a bunch of woo woo talk; it's real science and actionable steps we can all take to become more hopeful and improve the mental health of our educators, our students, and our communities at large. God has gifted you in a unique way. That means your strengths bring hope to life differently than your spouse, your colleague, and even your friends. Today we're exploring how leaders create hope in different ways. Specifically, how your strengths show up and create hope for different people in different ways. In this episode, Tim and Sara use two CliftonStrengths to explore how leading with hope may look different for different people. It's an opportunity for you, as a leader, to remember and claim the ways God has gifted you and to celebrate the ways that you share hope with the world. Listen to Episode 218 It's no secret that many people are weary. One of the ways we can remind ourselves and one another of the faithfulness of God is to pause and celebrate the giftedness of others. To recognize how the people you lead are a blessing to others because of the way God's gifted them. One final reminder: don't just recognize your strengths. Put them to use in your leadership to be intentional about creating and fostering hope. And remember, when you share hope, it multiplies. Mentioned in this episode Strengths-Based Leadership Making Hope Happen by Shane Lopez
A leader's relationship with hope begins with your relationship with Jesus. If we're resurrection people, and we are, our relationship with Jesus will guide all of our relationships. Today, we want to focus on why communicating with hope is a leadership imperative. We'll explore a speech from Martin Luther King Jr that you've likely heard, or at least heard quoted, and how we almost missed experiencing hope. Then we'll look at recent research around communication and leadership from Gallup. All to help us explore why communicating with hope is a leadership imperative. Share Hope It's a leader's responsibility to communicate with hope. The late Dr. Shane Lopez worked extensively with Gallup on the subject of hope said it best, "Hope matters. Hope is a choice. Hope can be learned. Hope can be shared with others." Inspiring hope is a leadership imperative and is becoming more important all the time. Perhaps that's why Jackson told Dr. King to talk about his dream. People needed hope. Those words offer listeners, and even us today, a reason to hope. What is your hope? Talk about it. Share it with others. Communicate with hope. Mentioned in this Episode Learn more and contribute to Hope Throughout the Year here. Is it Hope or Wishful Thinking? Hope is Everywhere

Want to look younger - dramatically younger? I begin this episode with 3 simple ways that change how people perceive you. If you do these things, you will instantly appear younger than your actual age. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21895379 Human beings are born to be hopeful. If you interact with any 2-year-old and you will see and hear nothing but hope in what they say and do. Yet as adults we sometimes lose hope. And that's never good. This holiday season, I want to share with you a conversation I had with Dr. Shane Lopez, author of the book Making Hope Happen (http://amzn.to/2j7su8N). Dr. Lopez was a leading researcher and authority on hope. Unfortunately, he died not long ago at the age of 46 but he left a message about hope that is so powerful. Doesn't it seem that life would be easier if you had more courage? So how do you get more? Debbie Ford is about to tell you. Debbie was the author of the book Courage: Overcoming Fear and Igniting Self-Confidence (https://amzn.to/34MVudy) and she had a ton of courage. Debbie passed away a few years ago. Shortly before her death I had a chance to talk with her and I think you will find our conversation inspiring as we all prepare for the new year, 2022. Last week as we began our journey of advent, we started exploring why God with us, the incarnation, is a big deal. And, in turn, asking the question, what is the truth and consequence of this season for Christ-centered leaders? This week, explore why hope is a big deal for Christ-centered leaders. There are at least three reasons hope is a big deal, especially this time of year. First, hope is a big deal because it encourages us. Explore Isaiah 40:29- 31 and be reminded that our hope comes from Christ. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that hope is meant to encourage us and there is no greater encouragement than what we experience in Jesus Christ. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:29-31 Second, hope animates our action. Explore Hebrews 6:10-12 and consider what the writers of Hebrews might have experienced as young believers. Consider how their hope-filled action creates the space for us to experience the love of Jesus today. I'm sure that won't happen to you, friends. I have better things in mind for you—salvation things! God doesn't miss anything. He knows perfectly well all the love you've shown him by helping needy Christians, and that you keep at it. And now I want each of you to extend that same intensity toward a full-bodied hope, and keep at it till the finish. Don't drag your feet. Be like those who stay the course with committed faith and then get everything promised to them. - Hebrews 6:9-12 (MSG) You've heard us talk about the hope cycle before,[LINK TO EPISODE] but it bears reviewing. There are three essential parts to the hope cycle. The late Dr. Shane Lopez did groundbreaking research around hope. You can learn more here. Finally, hope is a big deal because it gives us confidence in what's not yet reality. The wolf will romp with the lamb, the leopard sleep with the kid. Calf and lion will eat from the same trough, and a little child will tend them. Cow and bear will graze the same pasture, their calves and cubs grow up together, and the lion eat straw like the ox. The nursing child will crawl over rattlesnake dens, the toddler stick his hand down the hole of a serpent. Neither animal nor human will hurt or kill on my holy mountain. The whole earth will be brimming with knowing God-Alive, a living knowledge of God ocean-deep, ocean-wide. 10 On that day, Jesse's Root will be raised high, posted as a rallying banner for the peoples. The nations will all come to him. His headquarters will be glorious. - Isaiah 11:6-10 We need hope to believe the future will be better and to work at it to make it better. Your Next Step We have two invitations this week. Why is hope a big deal? Let us know at connect@transformingmission.org or tag us on social media with #adventisabigdeal. As a reminder, we invite you to submit your interest in writing a devotion for “Hope Throughout the Year”

Hope is like oxygen it is a requirement for living! You cannot live without HOPE! "Shane Lopez states hopeful people believe there are many paths to their goals. None of them are free from obstacles. Life is full of obstacles every day. So, where do we find the balance and remain hopeful? Having hope is believing tomorrow can be better than today—a brighter future. Take action and create your own brighter future, knowing there are obstacles and an infinite number of pathways to reach your goals. "
Greetings! In today's conversation my guest, Jessica Lahey, and I discuss some big and weighty issues… This would be a good episode to listen to away from sensitive ears or wearing headphones. Got hope? If you do, how would you define it? Dr. Michael Ternes, an assistant professor of psychology here at Louisiana Tech University, introduces us to Charles Snider’s Hope Theory. According to the theory, hope is an active process that, unfortunately, we too often use in a passive way. When we say, “Hope you have a good day,” what we usually mean is “I wish you to have a good day.” See the difference? If not, he helps us understand in this episode of Beyond 1894. In his research concerning hope, he’s found hope is something we can foster in individuals to help them make better career decisions. Hope can also help someone be more flexible in their thinking style. Hope just might be a way society can circumvent the mental health process, get rid of the stigma surrounding it so students who need someone to talk to can put themselves in better position to use resources available on campus so they can make choices that are the healthiest and most adaptive for them. He recommends a couple of books for your consideration: Making Hope Happen by Shane Lopez and What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Nelson Bolles. P.S.: We wish you to draw something meaningful and helpful specifically to you from this podcast. Website: 1894.latech.edu/beyond/ Email: 1894@latech.edu Download the transcript to this episode. I'm reading a fantastic book again. It's called "Making Hope Happen" by Shane Lopez. One of the main points of this book is that you have to design your future before you can set and achieve goals. Shane calls this Futurecasting. This is such an important idea I added it into the first course in the Freedom Club. Most people miss the specifics of how to do this when they make their goals. Usually, they just pick a goal. Then 6 months later they realize they didn't do anything substantial towards getting the goal. I searched for this book because I found that I was getting only about a 10% success rate on my goals. I couldn't figure out why. I did all the thing you're supposed to do, be specific, set a date, backwards plan, etc. Even after doing it all "right" for so many years, still only about a 10% success rate. That is until I learned about futurecasting. Because of it, I was able to double my business income 5 years in a row, and that is just success in the business arena. I was able to do similar things in other parts of my life. I started using it with my coaching students and saw massive results. That is when I decided to mix it into my cornerstone, starter course, the Freedom Formula. It's the first course to go through in the Freedom Club, start going through it now and lets up that success rate. http://www.FreedomClubVIP.com Jeremy Frandsen World Leader in Freedom Business Education
While it’s natural to brag a little about your kids or your job or anything else you are proud of., you really have to be careful. A little bragging goes a long way and too much can be a turn off. This episode begins with a discussion on how much is too much. https://www.readersdigest.ca/health/relationships/things-need-stop-bragging/Ever wonder why some things are really easy for you to learn and other things are hard? Listen and you will hear some surprising insights into how humans learn – or don’t learn and you will hear some wonderful strategies to help you learn anything better. There has likely been a time in your life when you or someone you were with forgot their toothbrush. Consequently, you probably wondered if it was okay to share a toothbrush - just once. Find out in this episode. http://www.rd.com/health/healthcare/sharing-a-toothbrush/Life has changed dramatically due to the coronavirus. As a result, there is a sense of sadness or even hopelessness in the air. To inject some hope and optimism into the situation is Dr. Shane Lopez who was one of the leading experts on hope. I interviewed him a few years ago and sadly, he died shortly after that interview. Dr. Lopez authored a great book on the subject called Making Hope Happen (http://amzn.to/2j7su8N) and after you listen I think you will feel much more hopeful about your life and the future of mankind. This Week’s Sponsors-AirMedCare Network.Go to www.AirMedCareNetwork.com/something and get up to a $50 gift card when you use the promo code: something

You can look dramatically younger by doing almost nothing. This episode begins with 3 simple ways that change how people perceive you. Do these things and you will instantly and dramatically appear younger than your actual age. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21895379Humans are born to be hopeful. Interact with any 2-year old and you will see and hear nothing but hope in what they say and do. Yet sometimes, as adults, we lose hope. Then what? This holiday season, I want to share with you an interview I did a while back with Dr. Shane Lopez, author of the book Making Hope Happen (http://amzn.to/2j7su8N). Dr. Lopez was a leading researcher and authority on hope. Sadly, he died not long ago at the age of 46 but he left a message about hope that is so powerful.Life would be easier if we all had more courage. How to you get more? Debbie Ford is going to tell you how. Debbie Ford was the author of the book Courage: Overcoming Fear and Igniting Self-Confidence (https://amzn.to/34MVudy) and she had a ton of courage. Debbie passed away a few years ago. Shortly before her death I had a chance to talk with her and I think you will find the conversation inspiring as we all prepare for the new year, 2020.When your gas gauge says empty – are you really out of gas? You can find show notes for this episode at https://transformingmission.org/080 There are times it is easy to celebrate. A celebration can come easy when you're looking forward to a birthday, anniversary, or milestone of a loved one or colleague. But how do you celebrate - and what should you celebrate - when things get tough? We've identified three times it can be difficult to celebrate. While not exhaustive, these ideas will help you gain insights on where to focus and what to celebrate when, at first glance, celebrating seems difficult, or even inappropriate. Specifically, we discuss responding to a crisis, dysfunction and division, and diversity and differences. Along the way, you'll get reminders about how to make hope happen, stay focused on Jesus, and celebrate the way God is moving in your midst. Let Us Know For now, will you tell us one thing? What is God doing in your life that you have the privilege to be a part of today, tomorrow, or in the next week? Send Us Your Response Celebrate God's presence in your life and know, even when the challenges around you are making life difficult, the God we know in Jesus is with you. And that's ALWAYS something to celebrate. Three Times Celebration May Be Difficult Here are three times we've identified it may be difficult to celebrate: During times of crisis When decisions are made that bring about division within the body of Christ When the diversity of opinions, personalities, and perspectives overwhelm us Now, before you think we're saying "you should celebrate crisis or division." No, we're NOT suggesting you celebrate crisis or divisiveness. We're inviting you to celebrate God's abiding presence in the midst of crisis, division, and our human diversity. Is it easy? No. But, if we're to help people stay grounded in faith and centered on Jesus who offers us hope, celebration is essential. Next Steps We’ll take this leadership journey with you so you can celebrate the people and the presence of God in your midst. Whether you hold a position of leadership or regularly participate in a local congregation, this episode is for you. Rick Snyder was the founder of research into the science of hope. And, he was one of the pioneers of the positive psychology movement. In fact, he literally wrote the textbook on “Positive Psychology.” He documented just how important hope is to our overall well-being and tells us that there are three primary components to having high hope: Goals + Willpower + Waypower. It all starts with a Goal. Happy people have projects. And, happy, hopeful people have GOALS! They have a future they’re excited about. Then we have what Rick calls “Willpower.” In this context, Rick tells us that Willpower is that spark of determination that says, “We’ve got this!!” It needs to be there in the beginning AND it needs be there after you get knocked down a few times. (Rick’s protege Shane Lopez described this as “Agency” — a sense of personal power that we have what it takes to make our dreams a reality.) Then we have what Rick calls “Waypower.” Waypower is all about mapping out the plans for how you will attain your goal along with the wisdom to know that your first plan probably won’t work out perfectly — requiring you to continue optimizing your strategy while pursuing different routes to your goal. (Shane Lopez called this “Pathways.”) So, again: Goals + Willpower + Waypower. To be high hope, we need to have all three of those Optimized. It’s obviously not enough to have Goals without Willpower or Waypower. But it’s also not enough to have Goals and Willpower but not have the Waypower. You could be really fired up and really believe you can crush it but… If you’re not also doing the planning to find all the routes to your goal, your hope will take a hit. Today’s +1. Let’s do a quick check in on the status of your hope. Do you have specific, meaningful, and challenging yet doable Goals? Do you have a spark of determination or “Willpower” that gives you the confidence that you can achieve your Goals and helps you move through the inevitable obstacles you’ll face along the way? And, do you have a plan on how you can achieve your Goals (and a willingness to constantly tweak that plan as you get feedback from the world) via a strong sense of “Waypower”? Once more: Goals + Willpower + Waypower. Where are you strong? What needs work? Here’s to cultivating your resilient, grounded, yet high hope day in and day out — especially (!) when you don’t feel like it. P.S. Remember: If your basic fundamentals aren’t Optimized there’s no way you’ll be able to get yourself into that high-hope state consistently. Eating, moving, and sleeping well? That’s THE best way to boost your hope. Period.

Shane was one of the world's leading researchers on hope and was also a senior scientist and research director at The Clifton Strengths Institute, where he explored the links between hope, strengths development, academic success, and overall well-being. For me, one of the most magical moments of this year’s World Congress on Positive Psychology was the chance to honor, savor, and build upon the research of Dr. Shane Lopez. I first met Shane at a World Congress years ago, and he was generous enough to allow me to interview him on several occasions. To give you a chance to savor Shane’s insight, I thought you might enjoy this interview, which was recorded prior to his death. Shane explains how using your strengths - those things you are good at and enjoy doing - can help you be more engaged in what you do each day at work. And when managers shift their thinking to a more strengths based approach that encourages each person to do what they do best they can make a big difference in engagement, profitability and productivity. Learn how to identify your strengths, how these can change over time, and what you can do to develop yours and others strengths. You’ll Learn: [01:45] - Shane shares his journey with strengths. He talks about the work of Don Clifton at the University of Nebraska. [04:00] - Shane explains what a talent is and how they grow into strengths. [05:58] - In the workplace, we focus on weaknesses and try to “fix” those deficits rather than helping individuals find the right role. Shane states how Don focused on talents on finding the roles for people based on those roles. [07:20] - Shane shares that our talents are not static over time, but they don’t change a lot. [09:05] - Shane talks about Clifton Strengths Finder. [11:57] - Shane discusses the difference in strengths between entrepreneurs and those working within organizations. [12:23] - If you have taken the strengths finder, Shane suggests you team up with someone else that has taken the assessment. [13:49] - Shane talks about how a workplace can be transformed by catching people doing great work and providing quality feedback. [15:57] - Shane talks about the 70% of disengagement in the workplace. Managers are not exempt from this lack of engagement. [17:33] - Shane shares what managers do to help employees use their strengths at work. [19:47] - Shane talks about the changes of strengths in college students and how that will eventually change the culture of workplaces. [20:48] - Shane speaks about seeing strength development at the preschool level. Gone are the days when optimism was considered a soft skill. Happiness, hopefulness and optimism are powerful accelerants to resilience and better outcomes. Michelle and Lisa’s Strengths Michelle’s VIA Character Strengths: Creativity, Hope, Love, Love of Learning, Perseverance Lisa’s VIA Character Strengths: Creativity, Humor, Curiosity, Hope, and Zest Michelle’s StrengthsFinder Talents: Strategic, Learner, Maximizer, Achiever, Activator Lisa’s StrengthsFinder Talents: Strategic, Maximizer, Positivity, Individualization, Woo What You’ll Learn In This Episode Michelle was in an executive role. She had achieved her career goals, and everything looked great on paper. However, she had a nagging, unhappy feeling about work, and she found herself dragging her feet into work each day. One day, she was watching a popular tv show, and saw a segment on “positive psychology.” This segment would forever change her life. Michelle found one of Martin Seligman’s books. He’s the guru in the field of positive psychology. As she read (and later studied directly with Seligman), she realized that our goal should be to bring out the best in ourselves and others more consistently. The more we use our strengths in our jobs, the more engaging, energizing, and fulfilling our lives can be. Michelle started with the free VIA Survey, and found that her #1 trait was Curiosity. That led to her Ah Ha moment – the reason she was unhappy was because she wasn’t learning anything at work any more. In an effort to fulfill he need to learn new things, she implemented this plan: Read one new thing about positive psychology each day for 10 minutes. Michelle found that this exercise had a positive ripple effect throughout the rest of her day. It shifted how she felt at work. Each Friday, she emailed her boss 3 things she had learned through her reading that week. Later, she found out that he had been forwarding her emails to other people. At her 9 month review, he noted that the company hadn’t been using her strengths as effectively as they could be, and asked if she’d like to teach these ideas to others. This gave her a chance to put her strengths to work every day. The moments that people were able to actually see her strengths led to new career opportunities. In essence, Michelle ended up crafting her new career path. VIA is a a system that “diagnoses" the best in people. It’s a list of 24 character strengths that are consistent across cultures and history. The goal is to focus on the top 5 character strengths that light you up the most. Because we are affected by situations around us, Michelle recommends taking the survey every year. If there is a character strength you want to move up the list, there are methods to follow (but Michelle notes that it should only be because it’s something you value, not because society desires it). Here are 4 steps: Determine which strength you want to build Harness the natural part in your brain to create new habits (good or bad). Make sure you have some cue to work on that strength each day. For example, putting a book on your keyboard for the next day, or listen to a recording about this strength each day on your way to work. Try and use that strength when you are in a state of flow (when you can focus) Reward yourself each time you work on this new habit; it needs to be something you really want. For example, have a cup of coffee after your 10 minutes are up. Check out the resources below, because Michelle offers a free e-book on her website to help you be in your zone of greatness. It’s an excellent aide to improving yourself and creating new habits. Tool: Appreciative inquiry It’s a strengths-based approach to change, where you build on things that are working well. There is a positive effect on the company and the team. Spend 80% of your time on your strengths, and 20% on our weaknesses. You want commitment not compliance. Be realistic about how to get the best return on investment.
