Landon Gnade was reunited with his puppy, Lepo, thanks to the nonprofit Paws of War, after serving in Kosovo. Gnade met Lepo, originally named Onyx, during his deployment, and they quickly bonded. Paws of War, which helps veterans by reuniting them with animals they bonded with during service, facilitated Lepo's journey to the U.S. Despite challenges in transporting animals, the nonprofit successfully brought Lepo to Georgia, where he will live on Gnade's farm. Paws of War will cover Lepo's medical and insurance costs for life, supporting both the soldier and his pet. STORY 2: Cobb Approves Indoor Soccer Facility in Mableton The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal for an indoor soccer facility on Lions Club Drive, requested by Trejo Soccer Academy. The facility, a 24,028-square-foot warehouse, will be rezoned for commercial indoor recreation, allowing the academy to expand with two indoor fields for youth and adult training. Initially met with opposition over parking and rezoning concerns, the proposal was approved with stipulations, including occupancy limits and a 40-foot buffer. The facility must be completed within 180 days, and the property cleaned up. The building, originally a roller rink, will be repurposed for soccer training. STORY 3: 40-Home West Cobb Subdivision Approved The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a subdivision on Midway Road, proposed by Poston Properties, with a 5-0 vote. The development will feature 40 traditional and craftsman-style homes, reduced from an initial 47, with sizes ranging from 2,200 to 2,800 square feet. The 48.67-acre property will include 20.93 acres of protected open space, walking trails, and park areas. A homeowners association will maintain common areas. A 100-foot buffer will separate the subdivision from neighbors, and development hours are restricted. The project aims to offer diverse housing sizes, addressing some affordable housing concerns. Both highlighted the resurgence of polio cases and the need for proven vaccines. Meanwhile, Cobb County Commissioner Jerica Richardson was recognized for her service, despite uncertainties about her political future due to districting issues. In Georgia House District 42, socialist Gabriel Sanchez defeated incumbent Teri Anulewicz, later winning the general election. Cobb was a battleground for the presidential race, hosting multiple visits from President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris. State Sen. Ed Setzler presented a map in the Georgia Senate, aiming to meet U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross's deadline for a new map by Jan. 10, though this timeline is acknowledged as impossible to meet. State Rep. Sharon Cooper and state Rep. David Wilkerson called for compromise, highlighting issues with Setzler's map, such as separating high schools from their feeder schools. While some Republicans signaled support for Setzler's map, Democrats viewed his approach as uncompromising. The negotiation process will continue. STORY 2: Acworth Seeking Suspect in Credit Card Theft from Assisted Living Facility The Acworth Police Department is seeking a woman who allegedly used stolen credit and debit cards from an assisted living facility, Celebration Village. The suspect, described as a Black female with dark hair, was captured on Walmart surveillance cameras using the victims' cards. The incident was initially thought to involve staff members, but investigators discovered that the suspect, not employed by Celebration Village, entered the facility wearing scrubs similar to those worn by staff. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Medicare Advantage plans continue to draw in elderly enrollees by offering appealing incentives such as grocery cards and even golf lessons. Supporters of these incentives argue that they foster healthier lifestyles, whereas critics express concerns that they may serve as a facade for less-than-stellar coverage. These incentives have become a significant factor in the promotion of these plans. Despite the conclusion of the open enrollment period, beneficiaries have another opportunity from January 1st to March 31st to switch their plans. This discussion delves into the intricate web of insurance options available to seniors, cautioning them to stay focused on the essential aspects of their plans amidst the allure of these perks. It also tackles the issue of measuring the effectiveness of these incentives in enhancing health outcomes, a task which presents its own set of challenges. In 2023, more than half (51%) of eligible Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, according to Kaiser Family Foundation. Furthermore, nearly a quarter of these plans offer financial assistance for food and produce, as reported by Axios. STORY 2: The air travel industry is facing a new challenge that's affecting even those who've paid for convenience. Travelers who've subscribed to Clear, an annual $189 private program designed to expedite airport security checks via biometric identity verification, are finding themselves in line behind members of the less expensive TSA Precheck program, which costs $78 for five years. A surge in enrollment for both programs, combined with the introduction of more time-consuming 3-D luggage scanning machines and overall staffing shortages at airports, has resulted in longer wait times. Unfortunately, this means that Clear, despite its advanced technology, can sometimes be slower than TSA Precheck. Travelers are now left navigating a complex choice about which security line to choose, making their airport experience less streamlined than they'd hoped. This latest challenge highlights the ongoing issues in the aviation industry as it grapples with adapting to new technologies, increasing passenger numbers, and managing operational logistics. STORY 3: In Georgia, even if a red light is taking too long to turn green, drivers must not run it. Disobeying this rule is considered a misdemeanor and can result in a fine. A maximum $70 fine applies if caught on camera, but fines can increase to $158 if pulled over without previous points on the license. Repeated violations can lead to a $1,000 fine and three points added to the license. If a traffic light is malfunctioning, it should be treated as a flashing red or yellow light, and drivers should proceed safely. A completely broken traffic light should be treated as a four-way stop. Drivers are advised to report malfunctioning lights to the city or the police department's non-emergency line. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG STORY 4: A significant change is looming over Georgia's assisted living and personal care homes. State officials are contemplating a rollback of staffing requirements, a move which has sparked apprehension among advocates for the elderly who worry about potential safety compromises. This comes after Rep. Sharon Cooper addressed neglect and abuse issues in 2020, leading to an increase in staffing levels. Yet, the Georgia Senior Living Association is now advocating for a relaxation of these requirements. The proposed changes include a reduction in staff numbers in memory care units, a move that critics argue could negatively affect the quality of care provided. It's a pivotal time for the senior care sector in Georgia, as these decisions could significantly impact the lives of those residing in these facilities. STORY 5: Air Travel Major alterations are on the horizon for Amazon Prime Video, starting January 29th. Brace yourself for the introduction of commercials during your beloved TV shows and films as Amazon Prime Video follows in the footsteps of other streaming platforms by offering different subscription levels. Prime members will have the option to select an ad-free tier priced at $2.99 per month in the U.S., ensuring a seamless streaming experience. This move comes as Disney recently increased their ad-free Disney+ subscription rate to $13.99/month, while Netflix's ad-free plan stands at $15.49/month. However, Amazon reassures us that there will be no amendments to the Prime membership cost in the upcoming year. We'll be back in a moment. CTL Script/ Top Stories of Jan 2nd Publish Date: December 30th Henssler :15 From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Tuesday, January 2nd and Happy 55th Birthday to actor Cuba Gooding Jr. *** 01.02.24 - BIRTHDAY - CUBA GOODING JR*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Grocery cards, gas money, golf lessons: Medicare Advantage plans stretch limits Clear Subscribers Face Longer Wait Times Than TSA Precheck, Highlighting New Challenges in Air Travel Industry Running Red Lights in Georgia Could Cost You up to $1,000, Warns State Law Enforcement Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss Superfoods. We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Medicare Medicare Advantage plans continue to draw in elderly enrollees by offering appealing incentives such as grocery cards and even golf lessons. STORY 2: Clear The air travel industry is facing a new challenge that's affecting even those who've paid for convenience. STORY 3: Red Lights In Georgia, even if a red light is taking too long to turn green, drivers must not run it. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Back in a moment Break: DRAKE – ESOG STORY 4: Senior Facilities A significant change is looming over Georgia's assisted living and personal care homes. STORY 5: Streaming Prices Major alterations are on the horizon for Amazon Prime Video, starting January 29th. Commercial: HELLER LAW – INGLES 8 STORY 6: INGLES - LEAH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Superfoods. Today on the podcast Sharon Cooper shares her Jesus story. One important day she put her trust in Jesus for salvation and a love relationship with Him began. During our conversation she says, “If you're thinking about entering into a relationship with Jesus, it's the best decision you will ever make.” She's right! And “It's never too early and it's never too late.” Simply, acknowledge that Jesus is God's Son and that you are a sinner. Believe that Jesus' death on the cross paid for your sin and choose to follow Him. You can ask God right now. I hope you are as encouraged by Sharon's story as I am!

Please join me for the fifth episode in the Conversations with Alan series in The Locher Room to meet a group of individuals working to spread the message of 3GNY. 3GNY is an educational non-profit organization founded by the third generation: grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. Air Date: March 10, 20213GNY's mission is to keep the history of the Holocaust alive. Through their WEDU program, 3GNY trains grandchildren of survivors to share their family story in school classrooms. They must ensure that others understand the human face of the Holocaust, as well as its details, its place in Jewish history and how it is viewed and discussed today. They are the last living link to survivors. It is primarily through them that future generations will hear the actual stories of their grandparents' survival. All of these individuals feel a deep commitment to know and tell these stories, and to place them within the greater context of the Holocaust. 3GNY also raises awareness about human rights issues and genocide – past and present. To accomplish this, 3GNY creates forums where members meet, learn, connect and share ideas. Founded in 2005 with a group of six, 3GNY's membership now exceeds 4000. 3GNY organizes diverse programming, including museum tours, film screenings, theatre engagements, discussion groups, book readings, visits and dialogue with survivors, Shabbat dinners, Jewish cultural events, intergenerational gatherings, genealogy workshops and field trips.David Wachs, President of 3GNY, along with Sharon Cooper, Farah Kraus and Josef Szende will join me live to share the stories of their grandparents survival, to share WEDU classroom experiences and to share ways in which we can all help to make sure atrocities like the Holocaust never happen again. Just like me, these four individuals are the descendants of not one, but two Holocaust survivors.
James Evelegh talks to Sharon Cooper, chief digital officer at The Economist Intelligence Unit, about: • the nature of organisational change: people want change until they actually have to make the change• why she sees her role as not automating people out of a job, but automating them into a better job• how EIU's new Viewpoint product focuses on the user experience, allowing for both 'deep dive' and 'horizon scan' usage• how expectations of website design have changed: users now expect everything to be as simple as the best B2C experience• why business information providers should avoid getting "too fancy"• how, with clients increasingly being able to access the data themselves, business information providers need to remain laser focused on where they add value• the rise of real-time data and how to avoid data overload• how to embed yourself into a client's workflow without getting in the way• why there's nothing necessarily wrong with legacy tech, just legacy tech that's not looked after• why clients and users are both the biggest threat and the biggest opportunity to business information providers• and much more... What is Human Trafficking? When one hears the words ‘human trafficking,’ people often think of criminal organizations selling and shipping women and children out of the U.S. Although we are not wrong in thinking the previous thought is true, sadly that is just part of a much larger picture. According to The State.gov Policy Issues for Human Trafficking, trafficking in persons and modern slavery are umbrella terms that are used to refer to both sex trafficking and compelled labor. In the article What is Modern Slavery we get a more in-depth look at exactly what falls under the umbrella of human trafficking as a whole, such as the following: Sex Trafficking- When a person is misled, forced, and/or threatened to engage in prostitution. Child Sex Trafficking- When anyone under the age of 18 is baited and forced to perform a commercial sex act. Forced Labor-The use of physical and psychological threats, dishonesty, and/or abuse of the legal process (migrants are targeted) to force people to work. Bonded Labor or Debt Bondage-The debt of a family member imposed on a person or the exploitation of an initial debt a person incurred Domestic Servitude-When a domestic worker (housekeeper, nanny, cook, and etc.) is not allowed to leave, not given a day off, is abused, not paid minimum wage and/or not paid at all. Forced Child Labor-Forced labor of children in the custody of non-family members for the financial benefit of persons outside of the children's families. Unlawful Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers-Children recruited by force, deception, or coercion to be soldiers, porters, cooks, messengers or spies. Both boy and girl soldiers are sexually abused by the perpetrators (rebel groups, paramilitary organizations, and some government armed forces). The above list breaks down the different areas of trafficking and what it in-tells. Traffickers Lure Unsuspecting Victims into a Life of Modern Slavery Homeless girl standing against a wallPhoto by Eric Ward on Unsplash In episode 2 we talked about the face of homelessness in America. Sadly, among those persons are a large number of youths. There are a number of reasons those young people find themselves on the street. Some run away from abuse in the home or foster care placements. Whereas others are forced out onto the street because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or both. Innocence Bound in Chains Photo by Alexander Krivitskiy on Unsplash Quite often those young people are targeted by human traffickers camped outside of homeless shelters. The traffickers lure the teens by offering food, shelter, and a job; then they are indebted and trapped into a life of slavery; when all they wanted was to have a meal, rest in a safe place, and make some money to live. According to the June 2019 Trafficking in Persons Report in the U.S., a large number of child sex trafficking victims were in the foster care system at one time or another. Another method some traffickers often use is to place ads (modeling, dating, or acting) in the newspaper, magazines, and online--to lure innocent victims, such as in the case of two men in Miami. In the NationalReview.com article, the men lured 50 women over a five-year span into sex trafficking by offering modeling jobs. Those young women obviously wanted careers in modeling but they were deceived. The women were drugged and raped. The criminals filmed the rapes and sold the videos to porn stores all over the country as well as the internet. The men were later charged for the crimes. In the Fortune.com article, Human Trafficking Is an Epidemic in the U.S. It’s Also Big Business by Jaclyn Gallucci, we learned that the circumstances that cause youth to end up in susceptible situations also cause them to become adults who become prey to human traffickers. Dr. Sharon Cooper, founder, and CEO of Developmental and Forensic Pediatrics called this a pipeline of vulnerability.
Today we are continuing our conversation with Sharon Cooper, sister of Sandra Bland who lost her life in after being pulled over by a police officer. If you have not yet, please check out the first half of our conversation where Sandara shares with us the impact losing a sister has had on her life as well as the mental health implications of racism and living in a constant state of fear. Today we dig more into self-care practices during difficult times, the appropriate way to support someone who is going through a tragedy, and why community is so important. As Sharon says, “Take off your cape, you do not have to do it alone.” We also demystify mental health therapy and encourage listeners that even if you do not see a therapist, to find a tribe of like-minded individuals that you feel safe with. There is power in community and utilizing connection will help tremendously in your healing journey. Do you have thoughts about today's episode? I am sure you have heard of the term “self-care” but what does RADICAL self-care look like? And why do we need it? This week, I had the extreme honor of sitting down with Sharon Cooper, an HR business partner in Silicon Valley and the sister to Sandra Bland who unjustly lost her life after being pulled over by a police officer in Texas. Sharon shares openly about what it was like for her to lose her sister at a young age and the implications that has had on her own mental health, view of the world, and the way she raises her children. We also discuss honoring the grieving process and placing appropriate boundaries in our lives that will aid in the healing process. This is a powerful interview for those who not only have unjustly lost loved ones, but also those who have to deal with the fear and anxiety of being judged by the color of their skin. This is part one of a two-part episode so please be sure to check next week to hear the second half of this powerful conversation.
