Comencem el nostre capítol informatiu explicant-vos que el ministre d'Indústria i Turisme, Jordi Hereu, assegura que ja hi ha empreses interessades en adquirir les plantes que la multinacional International Paper té previst tancar a Valls i Montblanc. Aprofitant una reunió amb els representants de l'empresa, celebrada el passat divendres 13 de febrer, el ministre va explicar que el govern treballa per facilitar alternatives industrials que permetin mantenir l'activitat i, sobretot, preservar el màxim nombre de llocs de treball. Segons Hereu, les converses amb possibles compradors avancen i hi ha “interès real” per part d'operadors del sector. El ministeri confia poder concretar novetats en les pròximes setmanes. Mentrestant, el comitè d'empresa començarà a negociar amb la direcció a partir d'aquest dilluns. Anem al Carnaval. La rua de Carnaval 2026 va tornar a convertir, dissabte a la tarda, els carrers de en un esclat de música, llum i disbauxa. Centenars de persones van seguir una desfilada plena de comparses imaginatives, carrosses carregades de sàtira i coreografies que van fer ballar petits i grans sense descans. El públic, molt participatiu, va omplir places i voreres en una tarda marcada pel bon ambient i l'humor, elements imprescindibles d'aquesta festa tan arrelada. Les colles locals, encapçalades pel Moixó Foguer, van ser especialment aplaudides, demostrant, un any més, la vitalitat cultural de la ciutat. La festa va cloure al Kursaal amb un sopar i DJ. Els actes de Carnaval continuaran dimarts amb la Rifa del Porquet. Pel que fa dimecres hi ha prevista la crema del Carnestoltes i l'arribada de la Geganta Quaresma. Temps per l'art. El Museu de Valls té obert des de divendres un nou espai permanent dedicat a Joan Miró, un dels artistes catalans més universals del segle XX. La iniciativa vol apropar l'obra i l'esperit creatiu del pintor al públic de proximitat, amb una selecció de peces, material gràfic i recursos interpretatius que recorren les diferents etapes del seu llenguatge artístic. L'espai s'ha concebut com un espai pedagògic i immersiu, pensat tant per a visitants habituals com per a centres educatius. L'objectiu és reivindicar la vigència de Miró i el seu vincle amb el territori, tot posant en relleu la força simbòlica, el color i la llibertat formal que caracteritzen la seva obra. Amb aquesta novetat, el Museu de Valls amplia la seva oferta cultural i reforça el compromís de difondre el patrimoni artístic català. I acabem amb esports. Protecció Civil ha anunciat la suspensió de tota l'activitat educativa, universitària i esportiva prevista per a aquest dijous, així com de l'activitat sanitària no urgent, davant la situació d'emergència de vent que afecta el territori. La mesura té com a objectiu reduir la mobilitat i garantir la seguretat de la població mentre es manté el seguiment de l'evolució de l'episodi. Els serveis essencials continuaran operatius i les autoritats recomanen evitar desplaçaments innecessaris i seguir en tot moment les indicacions oficials. Des del departament corresponent s'ha assegurat que s'informarà puntualment de qualsevol canvi en les restriccions i de la represa de les activitats quan les condicions ho permetin. Protecció Civil insisteix en la importància de mantenir-se informat a través dels canals oficials i actuar amb prudència per minimitzar riscos. Les mesures han entrat en vigor la mitjanit d'aquest dijous fins a les 20h del mateix dia. En el cas de Valls, només funcionen els serveis municipals essencials i d'emergència, així com l'Oficina d'Atenció a la Ciutadania. L'Ajuntament ha demanat evitar els desplaçaments no imprescindibles, prioritzar el teletreball i han quedat tancats els espais naturals, parcs i jardins urbans. Quant als actes de Carnaval, que havien de començar coincidint amb Dijous Gras, han quedat tots suspesos. Anem a la plana política. El conseller d'Empresa i Treball de la Generalitat, Miquel Sàmper, va visitar aquest dimecres l'Ajuntament de Valls, on es va reunir amb representants institucionals i treballadors afectats pel tancament anunciat de les plantes de International Paper a Valls i Montblanc, que posa en perill uns 200 llocs de feina. Sàmper va reafirmar la voluntat del Govern de estendre la mà per mediar entre direcció i treballadors perquè la resolució d'aquest procés sigui “la més justa possible”. El conseller va insistir que el Departament d'Empresa i Treball ja treballa amb els empleats i té previst reunir-se amb la direcció de l'empresa per explorar vies de solució, tot i que va reconèixer que, de moment, no hi ha hagut una proposta clara de col·laboració empresarial. La decisió de la multinacional d'embalatges s'emmarca en una revisió estratègica de la seva activitat que comporta un expedient de regulació d'ocupació (ERO) amb 200 acomiadaments, una mesura que sindicats com CCOO han rebutjat com a “injustificada” i acusen de respondre a una possible deslocalització encoberta. Les institucions locals i la Cambra de Comerç de Valls han demanat a la companyia que reconsideri la seva decisió i s'estudiï la possibilitat que un inversor mantingui l'activitat industrial. No elections there until 2027, per the city’s founding legislation. Elsewhere, though, changes are coming. A new mayor and two new council members are guaranteed, with Mayor Skip Baliles and others not seeking re-election. STORY 5: Two more Georgia paper mills closing International Paper is shutting down two pulp and paper mills in Coastal Georgia, leaving about 1,100 workers without jobs. The mills in Savannah and Riceboro, along with a Savannah packaging facility, will close by the end of next month, cutting the company’s containerboard production by a million tons annually. The closures hit hard. Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns called it a “devastating blow” to Southeast Georgia’s economy and timber industry. Georgia’s pulp and paper sector has been shrinking for decades—down from 18 mills in 1977 to just nine now. Marshall Thomas, president of F&W Forest Services, told leaders at the Ag Issues Summit that lawmakers are exploring ways to boost timber demand, including sustainable aviation fuel from biomass. Burns vowed to work with state and federal leaders to find new opportunities for those affected and protect Georgia’s timber industry. With a 100% graduation rate, 98% AP participation, and near-perfect proficiency in math, reading, and science, it’s no wonder. Other Gwinnett schools? They’re solid but not quite in the same league. North Gwinnett High came in at No. 527 nationally, Paul Duke STEM at No. 659, and Brookwood at No. 1,360. Meanwhile, some schools didn’t even crack the top 100 in Georgia, with a few so far down they weren’t given specific rankings. Still, GSMST’s achievement is a big win for Gwinnett—and a reminder of the high bar it sets. Michael Kaiser is a humble leader who knows how to bring out the best in his team. Michael grew up working on his family farm in South Alabama. After high school, he began working on an engineering degree and completed a BS in nuclear engineering while serving in the US Navy. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Michael began working in the pulp and paper industry, where International Paper employed him. At International Paper, he frequently utilized Smith Industrial Services (SIS). as an industrial cleaning contractor. SIS eventually hired Michael to run a division of the company, leading him to his current role as Executive Vice President. He enjoys time with his wife, visiting friends and family, deep sea fishing, college football, nutrition, yoga, mindfulness and helping others.
