While a relatively new term, ageism is a method of discrimination based on age - typically toward older people, though it can also be directed toward younger people as well. It's a way of enforcing harmful stereotypes - too old to be effective, interesting, too young to have sufficient knowledge or understanding. Interview with Dannah Davies owner of Sweetsmith Candy Co. at SIAL CANADA 2019 in Toronto. Sweetsmith Candy Co. was founded by Dannah Davies in the summer of 2012. With money saved for school that she earned from paper routes, and jobs growing up, she began cooking her candy at home and selling at a local farmer's market once a week. Her handcrafted candy (all of which is based on a family recipe which she committed to memory as a teen) caught on fast. Soon enough she had to quit her day job, rented a commercial kitchen, and hired help to keep up with the demand. In the time that Sweetsmith has been in operation, Dannah's candy has made its way into every market from Cochrane to Okotoks. Last week, Dan Clapson our man about Canada went to Montreal for the SIAL Canada conference and tradeshow to find out a bit more about food product innovation and Canadian companies who are growing organically at a healthy rate with interesting creations.In-studio, cohosts Emma Waverman and Phil Wilson chat about a Toronto restaurant's seemingly racist actions to a table of patrons that led to a human rights case, former critic Chris Nuttall-Smith calling out Toronto's food media community for lack of authentic reporting (do you agree?) and, of course, they recap the the fifth episode of the current season of Top Chef Canada.Not to give any spoilers, but it was an emotional roller coaster of an episode with an end result that was hard to swallow for our two hosts.
