Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Henry McClendon, Jr., the Director of Community Engagement for the International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP) and Pastor at the Berean Chapel of Detroit. Henry was previously the Southeast Michigan Area Director for Prison Fellowship Ministries, Director of Youth Development for New Detroit, Inc., and Program Officer for the Skillman Foundation. He is a proud lifelong resident of Detroit and is steeped in the wellbeing of his community.     Henry was introduced to the work of restorative justice in the 90's after witnessing a restorative conference between a convicted murderer and his victim's mother. He became inspired to bring restorative justice into his community and all communities he would touch in the future. Raised by strong and courageous parents who modeled perseverance, as a child his mother challenged him to find the word “quit” in a dictionary. When he reported that he couldn't find it in any dictionary in their home she revealed that it was because she had removed it from them all!   It's no wonder Pastor Kinloch is most proud of his own wife and son, calling them the jewels in his crown. His family is a source of strength, along with the time he spends following Jesus' mandate to pray. Listening to and reading the testimonies of others also gives him the confidence to encounter whatever comes his way. Johnson, a philanthropy leader who drives social change at the intersection of arts, culture, and community development and the Vice President of Strategy, Impact, and Communications at the Victoria Foundation. She most recently served as Arts Program Director with the Geraldine R. During her career, Chanel has also served as a central office executive in public school systems, including Detroit Public Schools; and worked with the Michigan Department of Education to ensure equitable practices for all districts across the state. Crain’s Senior Reporter Sherri Welch interviews Skillman Foundation CEO Tonya Allen at the Mackinac Policy Conference about early education and literacy issues in Detroit and statewide, as well as the development of a possible Wayne County millage for funding after-school programs.

Edward Egnatios is a program officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Michigan. As part of the Detroit team, he identifies and nurtures opportunities for positive systemic change within communities and executes programming efforts aligned with the foundation’s organizational direction. In this role, he provides leadership and oversight for programming and works closely with other staff to ensure integration and coordination of efforts. Before joining Kellogg in 2013, Ed served as a consultant for the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation in Detroit. Earlier, he was program officer, senior program officer and program director at the Skillman Foundation in Detroit where he conceived, coordinated or managed a wide range of neighborhood and youth-focused programs, including: the Good Neighborhoods program, the Detroit Youth Employment Consortium and the Detroit Youth Development Alliance. In other professional experience, Ed was president/CEO of EK & Associates in Grosse Pointe, Mich., national executive director of the UAW-Ford Family Service & Learning Centers for O/E Learning, Inc. in Troy, Michigan and vice president of United Way Community Services in Detroit. Ed received a bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio and a Master of Social Work in administration and community practice from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is a graduate of Leadership Detroit and was named a PLACES Fellow by the Funders’ Network for Living and Sustainable Communities in 2012. Ed was elected to the board of Neighborhood Funders Group in 2010 and is a past co-chair of that group. Ed also is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and served on several community boards and committees including Detroit PAL, Global Detroit and the Detroit Neighborhood Investment Forum. Carol Goss retired after nearly a decade as the Skillman Foundation’s president & CEO. During her tenure, the Foundation underwent major strategic shifts, including becoming an embedded funder working on-the-ground in six neighborhoods. Goss, a social worker by training, championed that effort and became a voice for children in the city when few others were beating that drum. Because of Carol Goss, the landscape of work for Detroit children has been reengineered. Because of her leadership, groups like Excellent Schools Detroit, Data Driven Detroit, Osborn Neighborhood Alliance, Congress of Communities Southwest Detroit, and Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance are in place now, moving outcomes for kids. Today, Goss is the Founder of Warrior Women Against Poverty.  "It is a movement of African American women who are working to support and mentor some of our most vulnerable women and their children. We started 2 years ago after spending a year at Harvard on a fellowship and we now work in partnership with COTS to help these women move towards self sufficiency.  They all want jobs and stable housing and more education and better lives for their children," said Goss.    Leaders have to take risks, walk in paths that have not been used, and be patient for results. Leaders must also show compassion and not be judgemental.  Warrior Women Against Poverty is leading the way and showing others how they can change lives one woman and one family at a time.   Goss was named, "Persons of the Week" by WXYZ TV (an ABC affiliate).
