One thing that currently makes parenting more daunting is the rise of social media.  If you feel like you can't keep up and you're concerned about what your kids may be exposed to, then listen in as we start the discussion on technology and social media.  We talk about the good, the bad, and some wise options for protection.

Social media promotes creating curated images. Photo filters construct a version of oneself that's not even possible to attain. What is beauty, and how does God define it? Shadow banned on social media has become a common occurrence over the past few years. The definition of shadow banning is when a user's posts and/or comments are not visible to the public, but they are visible to the user. This occurs when a social media platform uses a algorithm to hide a user's posts from a large audience. The definition of shadow banning can be vague, which is why it is often considered an allegation. Shadow banning is often used as a way to silence users who are critical of the platform or its owners. This can be especially problematic for marginalized groups, who may not have the same level of access to mainstream platforms. After leaving a successful counseling career on the east coast where she worked with children and families, Mary has enjoyed over 25 years in the camping community! Mary received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and her Master’s Degree from Fordham University in New York City. Mary and Carrie begin by talking about the benefits of summer camp for kids which leads to a discussion around the impact of technology on our kids’ brain chemistry, how social media is contributing to child and teen depression, why parenting has changed from when we were kids and some helpful advice on how to navigate the emotional pains of life our inevitably kids must go through.

He's the author of over twenty books including the brand new THE TEEN'S GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA & MOBILE DEVICES and IF I HAD A PARENTING DO OVER. Jonathan, his wife, Lori, and their three kids live in California and he resources parents with ongoing resources at TheSource4Parents.com.  The research is clear, parents overwhelmingly look back and say “I wish I had spent more time with my kids" Song: Cats In The Cradle-Harry Chapin The YES Factor - no matter what, if my kids came to me to ask “Hey dad, will you do this?”, the answer would be YES. Overreaction is never the answer. Be careful with saying to yourself, “I've got this”. James 1:19 - quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to become angry Hit the “Pause Button” and take time before responding. After giving your kid time to cool off, ask them what they think the consequence should be It was me messing up that gave me the insight to do it right the next time “Angry outbursts teach our kids I can't go to mom, she'll freak out or dad isn't safe. Consider the ramifications of that feeling. If mom or dad isn't safe, then who will our kids run to for comfort, for advice and for admiration." The most important thing I tell parents when they begin learning about culture and media is “Don't Freak Out”. Boundary Fast >> don't add boundaries, but instead begin the process by working on bonding. We must bond before we can add boundaries The Segue - the dissolve from one thing to another. We must slowly fade back on our boundaries as our kids grow older. Kids need clear boundaries, but those boundaries must pull back as they approach leaving the home and deciding for themselves. We need to look for opportunities for our kids to practice making decisions for themselves.   One might wonder what chicken wings, sports announcing, nursing, parenting, entrepreneurship, and admissions have in common. If you don't know, then you haven't met Brandon Elliott. I met Brandon several years ago at a speaking engagement I had, and we have been connected ever since. In this conversation, Brandon and I talk about being a male nurse, how he's overcome discrimination in his work and in his life, how he makes a difference teaching social media to kids in his S.M.A.R.T. program (S.M.A.R.T. stands for Social Media Awareness & Responsibility Training), sports, and a whole lot more.  More about Brandon Elliott As a graduate from the College of Mount St. Joseph Brandon earned his nursing degree while playing football. He was a captain on their undefeated team in 2004 as well.  Brandon worked in the hospital setting before finding his niche in long term care.  He became a director of nursing services by the age of 26 and is currently known in the Cincinnati marketplace as the nurse liaison for Oak Pavilion nursing center. As a nurse liaison Brandon has become known as a straightforward, responsive professional to the discharge planners in all the area hospitals. He is also using his nursing platform to speak with teenagers about the healthcare field and the wonderful field of nursing. Here is where chicken wings come in. Brandon's in-laws run a local watering hole, which he takes his turn working. It is a great place for him to catch up with friends while watching his beloved Bengals and Reds. Speaking of spare time, Brandon seems to pack a lot into a little. As a graduate and student athlete at Purcell Marian high school here in Cincinnati, Brandon supports his alma mater in several ways. He is a mentor to many of the African-American athletes starting at their first day of school. The most notable role is that of Internet broadcaster for the athletic contests at Purcell Marian. Brandon proudly represents both The National Black Nurses Association and The American Assembly for Men in Nursing.  His spearheading of the annual fundraiser event has made it possible for more scholarships to be awarded for thriving students.  He has recently been named the Chair for Social Media/Technology for the National Chapter.  It was not a surprise to see Brandon listed as a recipient of the 1st Annual NBNA “Under 40” award! Brandon is also the co-founder and CEO of the social media awareness and responsibility training (SMART) program. This non-profit organization was created with his best friend after seeing several student-athletes lose out on scholarships and opportunities because of their social media image and brand.  The SMART Program’s mission is to teach students to teach students to use social media in a mature, savvy way, for the purpose of creating a positive personal brand.  Our goal is to reach 1 million people by year 2020.  2016 has been great with 40 presentations in the books and over 20 scheduled for 2017! The most important role that Brandon fills is that of father. Brandon is married to his high school sweetheart and has three very active and pretty daughters, Avery, Macy, and Laney.
