Shane opens up about his unexpected journey to becoming a two-time vegan cookbook author, including how he learned to bake artisan bread from scratch and even bought a bread machine to write his second book! But this conversation goes way beyond bread. We dive deep into how Shane's faith, purpose, and family inspired his transformation from 300 pounds and diabetic to thriving and vibrant. We also explore how toxic food culture has become Satan's secret weapon in the church, the power of the Daniel Fast as a bridge to plant-based living, and why being a quiet vegan does a disservice to those who need hope and healing. You'll laugh, reflect, and leave feeling more empowered than ever to walk in health with purpose. In This Episode with Shane Martin, We Discuss:  Shane's unexpected opportunity to write two vegan bread cookbooks with a traditional publisher  The process of developing and photographing 70+ bread recipes—many of them oil-free or easily adaptable  Why he said yes to a vegan cookbook that wasn't fully whole food, plant-based—and what he learned along the way  How faith and biblical responsibility as a husband and father inspired his health journey  The dangers of “acceptable sins” in the church, like gluttony and toxic food culture  The importance of meeting people where they are—yes, even with vegan cheese  How the Daniel Fast can be a powerful, culturally relevant entry point for Christians to explore plant-based eating  The psychology of food addiction, trauma, and why “moderation” doesn't always work  Why more plant-based Christians need to speak up (without being weird or preachy)  Stories of God moments, life change, and Shane's most meaningful reader experiences Links Mentioned in This Episode: Shane's Website: https://shaneandsimple.com/ Shane's Cookbooks: The Plant-Based Bread Bible: https://amzn.to/4hWLBj6 (#ad) Vegan Bread Machine Cookbook: https://amzn.to/3FUKBPa (#ad) Previous Episodes with Shane: https://youtu.be/oLJ3j1R_yT0 https://youtube.com/live/0CvyPzS3Lf0 https://youtube.com/live/xDZDNKzMyiI Forks Over Knives Documentary https://www.forksoverknives.com/the-film/ Engine 2 Diet Book: https://amzn.to/3YdYn5C (#ad) Connect with Shane:  Shane & Simple: https://shaneandsimple.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shaneandsimplecooking/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shaneandsimplecooking About Sersie & Gigi The Healthy for My Purpose Podcast is designed to inspire you to reclaim your health and invite God into your health journey. Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to introduce you all to: MK ULTRA, Non-Human Intelligence, and Secret Space Program survivor and whistleblower, decorated combat veteran, investigative researcher and reporter, writer and blogger, remote viewer, clairvoyant, astral explorer, lucid dreamer, thought-projecting meditator, former GATE kid, and psionics explorer: Shane Frakes A little bit about Shane: Shane was likely born into a multi-generational lineage of family who were associated with and possibly used in government programs. He is a descendant of a lineage that carries the rare and peculiar RH-negative blood type, a trait that has long been associated with a unique connection to consciousness and possibly even alien origins. His great-grandfathers - one of whom worked with Paperclip n@zis - were involved in classified government projects including the Manhattan Project, UFO's, and the development of the atomic bomb. From as far back as he can remember, Shane was thrust into a world that most children could never imagine. A world where the government targeted him from a very young age for his psionic abilities. His childhood was far from ordinary - shaped by clandestine programs now infamously known as MK ULTRA or possibly even the Secret Space Program. Shane's abilities were not considered gifts. but rather a resource to be exploited, molded, and harnessed for purposes far beyond his comprehension at the time. As a decorated combat veteran with three tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), he has faced many challenges, but none as profound as those he encountered during his early years in these government programs. His experiences left him with fragmented memories, a legacy of trauma, and a deep understanding of the unseen forces at work in our world. Now, as an adult, Shane has reclaimed his abilities and dedicated his life to exploring the psionic realm. He is an investigative reporter, clairvoyant, and remote viewer, actively working with civilian organizations to push the boundaries of what is known about psionics, genetics, and the biology behind psychic abilities. His journey has led him to reestablish the connection he had with non-human intelligence (NHI) as a child, becoming an NHI communicator who regularly enters hypnagogic states to communicate with entities and gather information. Through extensive research and exploration, he has come to believe that the government discovered a correlation between the biological makeup of NHI and individuals with RH-negative blood, leading to the initiation of programs like MKUltra. These programs sought to test and groom children with psionic abilities, particularly those with RH-negative blood, for their potential to interact with NHI and advanced technology through consciousness.  CLICK HERE FOR 15% OFF YOUR RIFE ORDER: Rife Technology – Real Rife TechnologyCODE: 420CLICK HERE FOR FREE SHIPPING ON CZTL'S METHYLENE BLUE: Buy ultra high purity Methylene Blue – CZTL CODE: IMAGINATIONCONNECT WITH SHANE: Twitter / X: (4) Articles by Shane Frakes (@OldVetSymposium) / XYouTube: Old Vet's UAP Symposium - YouTubeWounded Warrior Project: Wounded Warrior Project - DonateSupport the show

Worship through song is one of the most powerful ways to connect directly to the love, compassion, power, and grace of God. In worship, walls we've placed between God and us get torn down, just as God tore the veil at the death of Christ. In worship, our hearts become soft, aware, and open to the glorious majesties of God's nearness. In worship, God makes his nearness known to us and fills us anew with the power of his manifest presence.   Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 132:7, and today's worship is Psalm 34 by Shane & Shane . – Thank you so much for listening to today's podcast. Why do we sing so much in church? When we surveyed a group of parents, one child had a very good question about what humans are made for: worship. He even provided an analogy all about tacos (you’ll have to listen to hear how astute and hilarious it was)! Today, we asked our friends, recording artist and musicians, Shane and Shane to join us for a conversation all about worship: what it is, why it matters, and how it sets us apart as believers. We also chatted all about their recording careers, why they sing, and how they talk to their own kids about worshiping God. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Maybe you know what it's like – your kid sees another kid at the store or in school that is different from them, and they don't know how to act. They try to look at them out of the corner of their eye, maybe they giggle, or they loudly ask you what that thing is they sitting on and if they can get one. Sure, it's embarrassing, but it's in no way a reflection of your parenting. Rather than shushing your child and moving on like it never happened, you can take this as an opportunity to teach your children about inclusion. In this episode, we had a conversation with the infamous Laura Wifler, co-founder and executive director of Risen Motherhood. On top of producing content for Risen Motherhood, Laura is also an author of multiple books and creates resources for moms, kids, and families. Laura has a daughter with a rare genetic condition – in this episode, she shares some parenting tips to help teach children on how to react around others with disabilities, practice acceptance, and maybe even make a new friend! Enjoy! In this episode, we discuss: How to train your kids to act around children with disabilities – and find similarities instead! How inclusion has improved (or not improved) in church. Moving from tolerance to acceptance. How to have conversations about inclusion with your children with regard to the LGBTQ community. Why it's important to have friends who are different from us. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

There is a long-held practice in teaching biblical theology. It uses questions and answers to help the student remember the foundations of their faith. Shane & Shane sing a traditional Christmas hymn that asks and answers an important question, "What Child Is This?" Many people in the life of Jesus asked this question (or something similar to it), and this week we set out in the book of Luke to make a list of answers we can refer back to in our own faith walk. In this week's episode, I discuss the following: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Read in context Read and keep on reading Make a list Historical context What child is this? Worship through song is one of the most powerful ways to connect directly to the love, compassion, power, and grace of God. In worship, walls we've placed between God and us get torn down, just as God tore the veil at the death of Christ. In worship, our hearts become soft, aware, and open to the glorious majesties of God's nearness. In worship, God makes his nearness known to us and fills us anew with the power of his manifest presence. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 132:7, and today's worship is Psalm 34 (Taste and See)  by Shane & Shane. --   Podcast Wrap up Script for Craig: “ If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” - James 1:5   We live in a world saturated with information but yet seemingly starving for wisdom. Glory to our good God that He is a fount of wisdom and offers to pour out His beautiful truth and wisdom into our hearts whenever we ask. Jesus modeled this beautifully through his parables and teachings, both of which are included in our Wisdom devotional!   Wisdom will take you through four weeks of quality time with the Lord. Experience a fresh glimpse into the life-giving grace of God!   How to be responsive to the presence of God in our lives How to fulfill our deepest longings through intimacy with God How to hear Jesus speak directly to our situation through his parables How to free ourselves of the tyranny of constant busyness by creating boundaries And every dollar you give today goes to help more people like you experience the nearness and love of our God.  Get your copy today at supportfirst15.org, or click the link in today's show notes.

Hymns seem old fashioned to many in the modern church. So how in the world did a “modern hymn” become one of the most popular songs sung in churches around the world?  20 years after Keith Getty and Stuart Townend wrote “In Christ Alone,” the song has not diminished in popularity. From Lauren Daigle to Shane & Shane, it's also been covered by many leading Christian musicians at work today. But how did it come about? And what does it mean to the two people who first brought it to a global audience?  On today's episode, Charles Morris returns to a conversation he had with Keith and Kristyn Getty at the 10th anniversary of “In Christ Alone.” Sitting at a piano in an empty church, they discuss topics ranging from music and worship to parenting and what it takes to live the Christian life. They also discuss the release of their album “Hymns for the Christian Life,” which we still have available for your gift to Haven Ministries at haventoday.org.

We believe for victory by faith. We see victory Lord by faith. We know that you're at work in our lives. Moving in our circumstances, you're meeting our every need by faith. We believe that you will always meet our, every need. Our emotional needs God, for those, with real significant emotional needs today, we pray that you rest on them and speak to them and bless them. Lord, thank you that they're here in church, where they might receive the grace and the goodness of God and God's people or God, I pray that you'd minister to your people. For those who need a physical touch, emotional touch, just a spiritual touch, relational touch, Lord. 1 (15m 4s): Whatever's going on, Lord. We just pray that she'd be ministering all over the campus. Lord, for those who are watching online, we just pray God that you would be ministering powerfully. Lord God, thank you for who you are and for who we are in you by faith. We know that we are your adopted sons and daughters. If we've come to you by faith, we know that you take us in that your grace is sufficient. Your mercy is unending. Your love is unconditional. Your kindness is supernatural. Lord God, we just thank you Lord by faith. We just want to walk in all of that truth and that reality Lord will help us to do so today, Lord. And then as we kind of getting our heads around that and our hearts around that and our lives around that truth, Lord help us to walk in that all the days of our lives. 1 (15m 52s): Lord, thank you, Jesus, God, thank you for who you are and for what you're doing at harvest church and all over the central coast, wherever the name of Jesus is being lifted up all over the world. Wherever the name of Jesus is being lifted up. You're doing wonderful and profound things. So thank you, Lord God. Thank you, Lord. Thank you for your grace. For those struggling. We know we've got lots of brothers and sisters in the Ukraine, People just struggling right now. Lord, we just pray that you would strengthen them and help them to protect the innocent Lord and work supernaturally in that place. 1 (16m 37s): Like we already know that you are Lord. I pray that you would bring, bring the conflict to an end Lord, a peaceful and God that you'd be glorified, that we would see the supernatural hand of God quelling that and stopping that and ending that and bringing health and healing and freedom in Jesus name. So Lord God, we pray for your grace upon our world and our nation, our community and our church. Lord, we need you. Thank you for this time in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Turn and say hello to somebody that you've never ever, ever met. 1 (17m 23s): Excellent. And you just start first place. You just different place. Yes he did. I love Nancy. Thank you for that. Where did you see Nancy? Oh, Clark center. Oh, next time you see her, just give me a, give her a hug for me and just tell her how much I love her. 1 (18m 3s): And she does when she was Ron's assistant. I interacted with her. 1 (18m 49s): It's always hard to bring people back after the greeting time. It's easier just to let's just keep going. Right? Come on back here. People have been asking me why don't you take your glasses off when you get up to speak. And I really hate, I don't like hate is a strong word, so I'll use it. I hate these things. So what I did is on my iPad, the beauty of an iPad is you can make the font really, really big. So I'm going to set these here on the front row. Don't confuse those with yours cause you won't like trifocals as much, but Hey, we're, we're going to do some things a little bit different today. 1 (19m 31s): I'm going to preach and teach for a bit and we're talking about faith. And so as an illustration of faith, so last week we had Fred crop coming up and he came up and he spoke to us about one act of obedience, his book that he's writing and the things that kind of stir or spurred that on. And so as we teach through Hebrews 11, the heroes of faith, I think it's important that we think in the 21st century, in terms of what does it mean to be heroes of faith, people of faith who were just excited about doing the will of the Lord? I think that's really what heroes of faith are. There. They come in all shapes and sizes. 1 (20m 11s): And in fact, Don gainer, a lot of you remember Don gainer, but before he passed, he was writing a book about all of these unknown heroes of faith, right in our community. And some, maybe somebody will pick up the Baton and, and be able to complete that work. But it's so true. People are doing all kinds of incredible faith things behind the scenes. And most of us never hear about them, but those I'm, I'm convinced that those are the heroes of faith that we're going to be celebrating in heaven when we get there. And we're going to say, man, I had no, I D I what was going on the scenes. And so as we think about our lives, as people of faith in a, a religion, for lack of a better term of faith, where God has called us by his great grace to be people of faith. 1 (21m 4s): I mean, you think about it. We, by faith, we trust an invisible God for his grace to forgive us, to cleanse us, to set us free from the bondage of sin, we trust the invisible God who does visible work in our lives. But we attributed to him by faith, believing that he is omnipresent omnipotent, that he is everywhere, president one at once ministering in our very needs. And so we're talking about faith. I looked at Hebrews 11 in my notes and I taught on Hebrews 11, four weeks in a row back about a year ago. 1 (21m 46s): And as we were getting ready to go into 1 0 2, 1 0 2 is our new worship center. We should be in the next month. Maybe I say, you know, whole everything kind of loosely, you know, but our new worship center is up the road. And, and as we got ready to take on that challenge, I just thought felt it was important to talk about faith and build us up and our most holy faith. And, and then almost a year later, we're almost done with the project and we spent way more money than we expected, but God has been so faithful. And so by faith, we continue to get the project done and we'll be in there hopefully in April, but our whole lives are about faith. And so when we think about our faith lives, we're gonna be interviewing Shane here shortly, who just got back from Africa, spent six months in Africa. 1 (22m 31s): I don't know if you remember, but we prayed him out about seven months ago and he'd been back for a few weeks now. And, and I, I, it's easy to think, okay, I'm in Africa, I'm, I'm here to minister by faith and to do all of these things. And that's like one of our greatest fears right in the world, like, Lord, I want to serve you, but I don't, I don't want to go to Africa. Like, please do not send me to Africa. Right? But listen, if God sends you to Africa is because he's got work for you to do, and he'll prepare your heart and your life. And when you get there, it's going to be like a hand and a glove. It just fits who you are, your gifts set and all of that sort of stuff. So most likely, God won't send you to Africa. But if he does where then wherever he sends you or whatever he asks you to do in your neighborhood and your place of work, faith is a part of every response to God. 1 (23m 22s): As you're sitting here today, you're by faith asking the Lord, Lord, speak to me. I know you can hear me by faith Lord. And so you're believing God to speak to you. I was talking to a woman in between services and this is the anniversary of her husband's passing and her daughter's passing. And she's here in her brokenness, my faith, believing that God's going to minister to her. I talked with a woman as I was out in the U area and Kelly, Wade. She has her little bundle wrapped up next to her body. 1 (24m 4s): And it's this precious little girl that they brought into their lives by faith. I said, how many does that make? And she said, well, that's number seven, number seven. I said the number of completion. So, so maybe this or that, I don't know. Anyway, I think she's hoping for that. Anyway. So number seven she's by faith, just she and Tom had brought this precious little baby into their lives, hoping to make it a permanent thing, believing God for great stuff or that little, little, little baby. So on the macro level, on the micro level, we walk by faith doing what God has asked us to do. So we're going to answer the question today. What is faith look like part of the way that we grow in our faith just by being plugged in, in church and Bible study throughout the week. 1 (24m 52s): And there's lots of great stuff going on. So get involved in a small group, the journey groups are kicking off. I did the journey last year and spent nine months in that. And it was just an incredible opportunity to grow in my faith as a believer in the Lord, Jesus Christ to grow, to grow in my ability to just comprehend God on a new level. It's just, it was powerful. It was powerful. I've been hearing all of these testimonies about people going through the journey and just half of their lives have been transformed. And a lot of people just keep going through it over and over again. So there's, women's groups, there's men's groups. If you're interested in joining the journey group, just fill out a communication card, let us know. And we'll, we'll get you in touch with the right people. Sound good. 1 (25m 32s): Do you, do you do the necessary things to build yourself up? And your role is totally faith and watch what God will do powerfully in you. So we're going to ask you the question today. What is faith look like before we answer that question? Let's first define the word faith. And we define it right from the scripture in Hebrews 11. One where it says faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen. It gives us a short sense about things. We cannot say it with me. See if we can see it. It doesn't require faith, right? But if we can't see it, that's when faith is required. And so everything about God and everything about his plan for us requires faith to believe him for things we can not see. 1 (26m 20s): And so we were to pray without ceasing, where to walk in relationship with Jesus, filled with the spirit and allowing God to direct our steps, to direct our conversation. So that by faith, we might do what he has called us to do by faith. We might speak the life-changing words that we need to speak by faith. We might pray the life changing prayers that need to be prayed over somebody's life. But where does his faith come from? Where does all this good stuff come from? This strong faith come from where it comes right from the scripture in Romans 10, 17, we're told. So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. And so we're built up in our most holy faith. 1 (27m 3s): We're strengthened in our faith as we turn our attention to the word of God as we, and that's our hope, every time we teach or preach is that people will be built up in their faith so they can move forward as followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ in their faith to encounter the world, to conquer the world for Jesus and to do great things for Jesus. And so faith, faith comes from it's like the reading of the word, like in Jack sass with faith and confidence in God, we read stories about the people of old, like Hebrews 11 talks about, we read stories about what those who have gone before us have done, and it builds us up and it gives us courage to do what God is asking us to do in the simplicity of our own lives and the complexity of our own lives. 1 (27m 53s): What is God asking us to do? So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So if you're struggling in an area of your life to have faith in an area of her life, if you're struggling with a relationship to have faith that God is working and reconciling healing and restoring, just turn your attention to the word of God and ask the Lord to speak to you. I still do this to this day. Lord. As I opened up the scripture, would you speak to me through your word? Would you, would you bring truth to illuminate truth to my understanding so that I might understand what you're saying to me and how I might apply it to my life. And then as I am able to do that, I'm built up. If I neglect the word, if I neglect time with, with, with my father, if I do that, my faith begins to wane a bit. 1 (28m 34s): I began to struggle, but when I come into relationship with him and read his word, faith is it's injected again. It's powerful. So what does faith look like? Number one. And I'm going to give you the first point to the message today. And we'll wrap up the rest of the points next week. Cause I want to leave time to have a conversation with Shane and the clock never got started. So it's may go along today because I have no idea how long I've been up here. Right? Has it been five minutes? Has it been 25 minutes? Do I have five minutes left? Do I have 25 minutes left? I have no idea. So we might have to order in some lunch fellowship around some food and take little naps. We'll get little blankets and that sort of thing. So what does faith look like? 1 (29m 16s): Faith is obedience to God. Faith is obedience to God, especially when God directs us to do something we don't fully understand. And it's been my experience that God usually directs us in a, in an arena, in an area to do something we don't fully understand. I don't fully understand preaching. If I'm honest, I think why can't people just read the Bible? What's the point of somebody expounding and preaching and leading in that way. I'm always perplexed by it. My Lord, it must be a supernatural thing. Cause I'm just a normal guy up here trying to teach and preach and trying to explain some things and God, for whatever reason does something with it beyond any of my capacity or ability. 1 (30m 5s): So there's all kinds of things that God does supernaturally. When we just surrender ourselves to him. Shane, we'll be talking about that today. So faith is obedience to God. It will be in Scott, especially when God directs us to do something. We don't fully understand God's plan. They don't always make human sense. Has that been your experience like Lord, I don't understand why you want me to do this. Like I've already got six kids. Why, why do I need a seventh kid? Right? Like, like I I'm getting older and I just want to chill right in this season of my life. Why are you asking me to do this uncomfortable thing? This thing that takes me out of my comfort zone or God, I'm just a kid. Why would you want to use me? I was having a conversation between services with a five-year-old and I asked him, I said, have you given your life to Jesus yet? 1 (30m 51s): He's like, no, I'm going to wait until I'm 12. I said, I said, why 12? And we talked about baptism or something like his plan is to get baptized at 12. I said, well, why don't you just accept the grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ right now? And he said, ah, I will, when I'm 12, I said, do you know what the grace of God is like I, so I explain it to him. And I've known this kid since birth and now he's five. And anyway, so I'm just sharing the gospel with this guy. And he's listening patiently and being just polite with me probably. But, but I'm sharing the gospel with him. Cause I'm like, man, if you can get it at five years old, why wait till you're 12 years old? Like right now. So if you can get the gospel now in your season of life, why would you wait? 1 (31m 31s): Why would we wait to by faith? Just welcome the goodness and the grace and the kindness of Jesus. If you are beginning to understand the grace and the mercy of Jesus Christ, his welcome his message in his life, into your life and watch what will happen. God's plan. Doesn't always make human sense. It can be even counter-intuitive like, like this is not something I would normally do. Lord God's plan will always test your faith. God's plan, always tests our faith. We're gonna be talking about a man, Abraham, who is tested in his faith and who came through it with flying colors, by the way. And we're gonna learn some stuff from him and God's plan for his people always requires faith. 1 (32m 16s): So picking up or pastor Jeremy left off last week, we're in Hebrews 11, 17. We're just going to get through a couple of verses today. It says this in Hebrews 11, 17, it was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him, Abraham who had received God's promise was ready to sacrifice his only Isaac, even though God had told him, and this is a quote from Genesis 2112, Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted. So Abraham and Sarah received this revelation as child lists people, they received this revelation from God, go to this land that I will show you. 1 (33m 5s): And I will make you the father of many nations, like the sand of the seashore and the stars in the sky. That will be the number of your descendants. So their child lists, Sarah is barren, unable to have kids. And so time goes on and then Sarah's like, Hey, take my servant Hagar and go, you know, do the thing. And maybe God will provide a descendant through her. And so she was born that God reiterate, this is not the son of promise. So that's not as pro center promises, born supernaturally wonderfully. So Abraham was a hundred years old. 1 (33m 48s): Maybe your family time is maybe you got some more family. Sarah was 90. Abraham was a hundred. So if you're in that rate range, maybe you've got another kid coming. I don't know. I don't know. I don't pretend to know these things, but Isaac was the son of promise. And he was the only son that Sarah gave to Abraham. And so Isaac, the only son of Sarah and Abraham, God is being, is asking them to sacrifice him. Literally, literally speaking, literally sacrificing their son. And so they make plans. 1 (34m 28s): I love the story because it's a hard ask. Would you, I mean, maybe you've got asked you to sacrifice one of your kids. It wouldn't be so hard, but this was the son of promise, right? This was the son of promise. This was the son of promise. And so this was a hard ask and there, all right, so there's not like a plan B like we could try, but probably not going to have another kid. He's the son of promise. And so he had to decide, Abraham had to decide what, what am I going to do with this direction from the Lord? And he did what all of us should do with the direction of God. And we say, yes, Lord, because no Lord is not actually it's, it's, it's a contradiction in terms when we say no Lord, because Lord means Lord ship leadership priority. 1 (35m 27s): So if we say no Lord, it means he has no, actually no longer Lord, but something else is. And so he said, what he and all of us should say, yes, Lord, yes, Lord verse 13. This is what Abraham did or shoot me first, 19 Hebrews 11, 19 Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead. Why? Because the moment that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac was as good as dead in his mind because the answer was of course, yes, Lord. 1 (36m 7s): I don't understand. But yes, Lord, I will do what you've asked me to do. Believing that God is supernatural by faith. Believing that God, if the son died, God could resurrect him from the dead. And so this true story, the historical account of what happened in the life of this family might remind us of another story in the Bible. This story points us to the reality of the sacrifice God made in sending his only son to die for the sins of humanity. There are similarities. Genesis 22 tells us that it was a three-day journey for Abraham and Isaac to get to the land of Moriah, the place of the sacrifice. 1 (36m 52s): And so immediately hearing the voice of God, the plan of God, the direction of God in Abraham's mind, Isaac was dead because that was the plan took him three days. So in his mind, Isaac is dead. Now for three days in his mind, because this is what God directed. You might consider it conclude that Abraham had walked in such obedience that his son was considered dead. And so after three days, when the sacrifice, the Ram caught in the thicket to sacrifice, to replace the sun, it was like a resurrection. It was like a life giving resurrection, even as Jesus was dead three days before the Rez resurrection, it was, there was something about this and we see old Testament stories. 1 (37m 39s): Pictures of that point is to Jesus in the new Testament. Really that's what the old Testament is all about. The old Testament is all about preparation, pointing people for 39 books, pointing people to Jesus, the resurrected Lord in the new Testament. We see the same example in the story of Jonah. When we read Matthew 1240, it says for, as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights. So will the son of man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. Faith is all about obedience. I want to invite Shane up right now and we're going to hear about his faith journey, his obedience and all of that stuff. 1 (38m 25s): So let's turn our attention to the front with Shane Shane. Why? Once you introduce yourself, let me give you a microphone first and 3 (38m 35s): Then you good morning, everyone. My name's Shane. 1 (38m 38s): Hey Shane. Yeah. Shane, thanks for, for joining us today. When you showed up. So three weeks ago, when, when Shane got back three weeks ago, I think it was three weeks ago today, right? So we're having church in. I know Shane's in Africa. I know he's coming back soon, but he just shows up and he's sitting over there and I'm like, what's going on? So he told me he flew 25 hours and then drove three hours from lax to get to church that morning. So if you had a rough day getting to church, it didn't require 28 hours of inflight and on the road travel. 1 (39m 21s): So welcome. I've been trying to figure out a way to get you up here because six months plus ago, so almost seven months ago, we prayed you out and we've been praying for you. And we've been excited to hear your updates. So tell us kind of your story. How, how did you end up experiencing this fear that we've all had about being sent to Africa? What, what did God do to present that to you and to get you there? What does that all look like? Sure. Let me 3 (39m 50s): Rewind back to 2018. When I started coming to harvest, I joined a men's group and Lou was actually in that group. Yeah. And Mike Maddie also, he started the bold faith journey, which is how I went to Africa, the door that opened. And so Mike started a S a zoom group that we would meet seven days a week for 30 minutes each day. And pray through the Bible. We would read a scripture and pray. I'm still doing that. And it's been three years, two years, two years. I've been on three years. That they've been all right. So, so how did that then? 1 (40m 31s): Yeah. What, when did you hear thus sayeth the Lord go to Africa. That's where 3 (40m 35s): That, that's how the Lord that happened. When I, when I read the scripture that it says to go and make disciples. Okay. 1 (40m 43s): And so to you, that meant go to Africa. 3 (40m 46s): Yeah. Well, to me that means my neighbor, you know, meant to be willing to serve wherever I am with whatever I have. You know, I think a lot of us think that we have to be educated or have to have something special. Yeah. But me, I, I can't even speak very good, 1 (41m 5s): Like Moses. Right, right. Yeah. Yeah. 3 (41m 6s): Good. Yeah. But you know, I just wanted to get out of my, get out of my comfort zone and see the world, see what God's doing in the world. Yeah. Through me, it's not about me. It's about what God's doing. So yeah. 1 (41m 21s): Well, faith is all about obedience, surrender, all that kind of stuff. So what happened when you got there? Yeah. 3 (41m 26s): Yeah. I got to a village in Zimbabwe or a student Zimbabwe for four months and we share, we shared the gospel to a, a village of about 6,000 people. Only about 300 people would come. Okay. But 300, 6,000 people didn't have running water or electricity, sewage. So we would take them the gospel and, and water. So we call it a water ministry twice a week. We'd bring two, 3000 liter trucks full of water. They would line up their buckets and we'd fill them up. They would carry them home. And that's how they drank washed dishes, showered, anything. 3 (42m 10s): They lived out of a bucket. Yeah. 1 (42m 11s): What was the result if you didn't bring that water? How far did they have to walk? 3 (42m 14s): Probably a mile, mile and a half. Okay. Pretty far. All right. Yeah. Round, round trip to two miles. Yeah. Wow. 1 (42m 22s): So what did that do for the people when you met their most basic need for water? 3 (42m 28s): Yeah. Water is a blessing to them. They were really blessed and happy to do have that. And 1 (42m 35s): I love that you went not only to bless them spiritually, but to bless them in a real, tangible, and physical way as well. I think that's really consistent with what we see in the scripture and with what God has called us to that we're meant to minister to the whole person, body, soul, and spirit. And when we can do that, I think we have the greatest impact. So tell me about leading. How did you guys tell people about Jesus besides the water ministry? You talked earlier about going door to door and knocking on doors 3 (43m 6s): And that sort of thing. Yeah. Pastor shepherd would share. He's a, he was our shepherd, he was our name. He was our mission. 1 (43m 12s): So it's like pastor, pastor or shepherd shepherd. Right. Okay. I 3 (43m 17s): Should have a name like that. Here's our missionary family. And, and so he would teach and preach and yeah. And I would share a message once in a while to 1 (43m 29s): That's awesome. So when you knocked on the door, tell us about those cubes. Those, 3 (43m 34s): Yeah. So we had a Vanji cube. It's a little block and it's kind of the size of Ruby. Cute Rubik's cube. Yeah. And it would fold out and had images on it. And we would share scriptures with each image and explain a story. And it took about five minutes to go through and share the gospel. Wow. And before I would even finish, they would be ready to accept Jesus. And so it's called the Vanji cube. Huh. 1 (43m 60s): So if so, so simplistic, but yet so powerful. 3 (44m 3s): Yeah. They were very receptive. I didn't have, people are just open to hearing about the gospel of Jesus Christ. 1 (44m 10s): So we talked earlier and that's, that kind of got a little pre privy information, but Y so you talked about the intentional spiritual warfare. So talk, we'll talk about a couple of things. Talk about the witchdoctors that you encountered and kind of the culture spiritually in that place. 3 (44m 29s): So which doctors are kind like their preacher, their religion is ancestral worship. They believe in spirits. And so they would consult a witch doctor and they would perform spells if they wanted a spell cast on somebody, they could do that. The witchdoctors very powerful. They would could cause illnesses, death, and very oppression. Oppressed. Dark. 1 (44m 58s): Yeah. So what about the gospel do you think? I mean, cause they, they're obviously part of a culture where there's just darkness and oppressive spiritual stuff going on. What, what, what about the simplicity of that five minute presentation spoke to, 3 (45m 12s): We spoke to two witchdoctors while I was there. They were receptive to the gospel. I was so nervous more than I am right now. And I just couldn't believe that she, it was two, two women which doctors and they were just receptive to the gospel and I was, yeah. 1 (45m 35s): Yeah. So I think part of what makes people receptive is just the preparation and the spirit realm. So talk about the hour, a day. Prayer that I believe is what prepares people to hear the gospel message. 3 (45m 53s): Yes. We would go in or they would wait, I didn't always do this, but they would wake up and pray for an hour at 3:00 AM or 4:00 AM. Wow. And, and also, yeah, it was just to break the demonic spirits, the plans of the enemy each night. Cause the darkness spirits operate in the dark realms of dark also dark. Yeah. 1 (46m 16s): Yeah, absolutely. So they would, they understanding the culture and the spiritual battle. We wrestle not against flesh and blood enemies, but against principalities and darkness. And so they understood something about that. I think we can learn from what they're doing and their culture and their lives. They recognize now spiritual darkness here looks different than spiritual darkness there in their culture, but it's spiritual darkness, all of the same. And so there are generational things that we need to break through. There are things that we need to pray through and ask God for grace and strength and opportunity to share the gospel. And so that's essentially what these guys are doing. They're saying, Hey, because the enemy has got authority where he's been given authority, he's, he's able to possess what he's been given to possess. 1 (47m 1s): And so we need to break all of that in the spiritual realm and there's too much to go into it today, but, but there's really something that needs to be addressed in the spiritual realm that opens people up to the gospel. And so when we do that spiritual battle, God has an opportunity. We have the opportunity to speak life and grace. And so as you spoke to the witch doctors and they, what does it mean that they were receptive or responsive? What 3 (47m 27s): Does that mean? They listened to everything and then they wanted to accept Jesus. And so they're going to have the pastor, the local pastor there in that village. It was a very rural area. It took us about three hours to get to wow. And driving on dirt roads doesn't even look like a road. Yeah. And so the pastor there is going to follow up with them. Okay, 1 (47m 49s): Good. Yeah. Very good. Good. Again. What was your highlight? The highlight of your experience there? Oh, 3 (47m 54s): Do you have any do make it, yeah, just to everything that God planned for me, I, I didn't really plan anything and I always had somewhere to sleep and ate better than I've ever eaten. Yeah. And what do they eat there? A lot of corn maze. Yeah. And, and organic everything's organic beef. Okay. The cattle walk around the streets and grazed it's green. So they just eat grass everywhere. Yeah. 1 (48m 25s): So then when it's time to eat, they grab one of those cows and that's it. Yeah. There we go. Okay. Good. Good, good. And you've got some pictures and so let's throw some, the first picture up here and you just kind of talk us through and walk us through. 3 (48m 38s): Yeah. So the first week I got to, we went to PA I was staying with pastor ZQ. So after Zimbabwe, I went up to, I went to South Africa, then Tanzania. So this is Tanzania. We went to pastor ZKO, who was my missionary family in Tanzania. This is his in-laws. We went to their house and stayed for a week. And we would also, we would go to the third church six days a week and pray for an hour at 6:00 AM. And, and then at night we would eat dinner together and then pray and have a teaching, a Bible study. And then we would sing songs and it was just very centered around God. 3 (49m 20s): That was my initial initiate first week there. So it was very, 1 (49m 24s): I'm kind of, I'm got to stuck at the thought of staying with my in-laws for a week. 3 (49m 29s): It wasn't like that. They were it's when you're it's you're always with family there. Yeah. And it's not like, okay, when are they going to leave? That's kinda how I felt like I, you know, but yeah, but they don't, their family is everything to them. Yeah. Yeah. 1 (49m 46s): So they, the a stay for together for a week, pray and worship and just enjoy life. Let's see, didn't know 3 (49m 51s): The next picture here. This is where we set up Jesus, a Jesus film. It's a projector stand and we can project a movie on to it. So we would show Jesus film and they could learn about who Jesus was. This is in rural, rural, a rural area village. And there's about 200 people there that showed up for this one. 1 (50m 11s): Talk about the speakers that draw the people. 3 (50m 12s): Yeah. The speakers is a very loud, they can amplify and reach about two, a mile, a mile away. Very they're very loud. And so people just hear and they come curious, what's what's going on. And then they'll just sit and watch and then out yes. In their language. Yeah. And then people would get saved afterwards and it was just very powerful. 1 (50m 35s): Yeah. So how many pastors equals the one that plants all the churches, right? Yeah. 3 (50m 38s): Zip pastor's EQL has been planting churches for 20 years. He's planted about 27 churches. Wow, 1 (50m 47s): Incredible. Yeah. And there just seems to be such a hunger there. What do you attribute the spiritual hunger to? 3 (50m 55s): They just, they don't have anything they don't have, they don't know where their provisions are coming from. So they depend on the Lord and they believe in God, but they don't know about Jesus. Many of them don't. Yeah. 1 (51m 7s): Tanzania. Okay. So when you present the gospel to them yes. Yeah. Wonder how transferable that is in this nation and our town and our neighborhood. What in your, with your experience there and knowing the culture here, what, what can, I mean, what can we do? Can we expect similar, I mean responses or what's it going to look like for us? 3 (51m 30s): Sure. To go into Africa or just for us in 1 (51m 33s): This ring light to our neighbors in our community here in Asia. 3 (51m 36s): Yeah. Definitely. I encourage where wherever you are. You know, I, I have a short story to share that I sharing the gospel. I try to share it wherever I go. Yeah. Whenever I have a couple of minutes and I had just chaired my, with my tax accountant guy. Yeah. On online, I said, do you know Jesus? He said, yes. You know, so something so simple as that taking a risk, you know? 1 (52m 1s): Yeah. Just bringing Jesus into the conversation or the story. I think it was a week or so ago, a guy just given his life to Jesus and it was trying to find a job. And so he was at a job place and he walks in and says, Hey, I've just rededicated my life to Jesus. And I'm trying to find a job I'm like, that is so bold. Right. I mean, it was so bold. And so the gal was a Christian as well. And so she was grateful to hear that, but I think we miss opportunities to bring Jesus into the conversation. That's what pastor Fred was talking about last week. And I went to lunch with pastor Fred and Pam last week. And sure enough, you shared the gospel with the cashier and that's just because I was there and he's trying to display it or anything, but it was just because that's who he was and that's who they are. 1 (52m 42s): So I think we've got missed opportunities all around us, if we'll just slow down, pay attention. And if you would go back 3 (52m 49s): So win. When we first heard about Jesus, somebody was bold enough to share with us. Yeah. Like me, I'd heard about Jesus before, but nobody really told me about the gospel. And so 2017, I met somebody who was bold enough and, and then got me. Yeah. Just kept pressing and saying, Hey, check, you know, look into this. Yeah. 1 (53m 12s): That's awesome. Yeah. The 3 (53m 14s): Next, next slide. Yeah. A lot of the kids there hadn't had never seen a white person before. So they were, these kids weren't scared, but many times little babies or kids, young kids would see me and they would cry because they would be scared. I had that same effect on people. So what are they doing here? They're just what's happening here. Yeah. We were just playing. I spent about a few hours. I was there in this village for three days and I spent about three hours with them just playing. 3 (53m 58s): And they were showing me all kinds of little games that are simple without you don't need anything, but like with rocks and just, just so simple, how, how they have fun. That's obviously without a PlayStation. That's awesome. This is the youth group at the church. That's to meiny, which means hope in Swahili. And he was very good with the kids. He also led the Jesus film. He's a pastor as equals assistant. Okay. Okay. Next slide. This is how they get around on motorcycle for people on the next slide. 3 (54m 40s): There's me with his granddaughter and or with the guy in the motorcycle. That's his granddaughter. Next slide. There's me with as pastor Zico watching Jesus film on my phone next. And there's, we're praying for a lady. Next slide. We're just going to go through these kind of fast because a time next, this is me sharing with the college students at a university and pastor ZKO prepared a message or a teaching on a drug and alcohol. Next slide. There's where Buendia is. 3 (55m 20s): That's where we went for our three day trip. And then we went up to another town called meiny meiny, which is a mining town. Gold. They have a lot of gold there. And the Hills it's about two hours from where I was staying. Next slide. They're singing God. There there's none other like you. And I just thought their, their voice is so beautiful. The way you could start it over. If you can Hmm. 3 (56m 3s): You could play it again. Akuna come away. Way God. There is no So this church is a church that is eco planted on a hill of granite, no roads, all trails. And they carry up the bricks to my hand. Wow. To build any the houses and churches. Next slide, please. 3 (56m 44s): This is the village. One of the side streets. There's 4 million people in this town. Next slide. This is a little market where they sell beans and goods. That's oil in the, in the bottles, cooking oil. Next. This is when we were sharing the gospel and we were just going around. 3 (57m 28s): So you could go next slide. Next. This is them praying. We prayed for an hour in church and they just walked back and forth and pray or some lay down and pray. So it's a month. It's January is a month of prayer. And, and to prepare the next slide. Yeah. On the, on the buses there, they have a glory to God and Jesus. Yeah. So very God is very real. And, and for those who have, have heard Jesus there display it everywhere. 3 (58m 13s): So what's next for you? I would like to go back to Africa after I finished the job at it. Out of Diablo canyon. Yeah. Yeah. And what's, what's the longterm plan. I would just like to get, get equipped, go to a Bible college and get equipped and go back out to Africa and wherever the Lord sends me. Yeah. Yeah. Huh. What's the biggest challenge about going to a place like that? For me, it was just finances. I, I really pastor Zeke hill, his biggest obstacle was finances. Yeah. For me it didn't, I didn't, it wasn't about, I don't need the money. 3 (58m 53s): Yeah. I'm going to work so I can help as equal out. And he is just such, such a big vision and dream for a, what he wants to see happen in Africa. And I think finances is the only thing that's the obstacle, right? Yeah. So we're just waiting on God's timing. Yeah. He's faithful. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's a theme running through what we're talking about and just your, your, your surrender and your trust and your faith and just your availability and all that, that 1 (59m 21s): Sort thing. And I think that is transferable to us as well, surrender faith availability, you know, to our point earlier obedience, and then just watch what God does with all of that raw material. Like you said, you know, we've, we feel like we need to be S we have certain gifts or talents or abilities, but God really just works best with the raw material of an obedient, faithful, willing person. So thanks for being that person. And thanks for sharing your story with us really, really appreciate you. I want to pray for you as we get ready to release you here, Lord. So Jesus, we just want to pray for Shane. We thank you for what you're doing in his life, Lord and God that he's available. 1 (1h 0m 4s): And it's just holding onto his life loosely, ready to go, where you would call him to go show us how to do that. Lord, not all of us are single and able to do, you know, at the drop of a hat, what Jane's been able to do. Lord, show us Lord in our contacts with our kids and grandkids and jobs and responsibilities. Lord, show us how to do what you've called us to do to live by faith Lord. So thank you for the opportunity to hear this story and to be a part of this man's life bless. And we pray in Jesus name. Amen.  Thank you, Jesus. The battle belongs to you. Thank you that you have gone before us. Thank you for the faith that we have in you. Thank you for your love. Thank you for your protection. Thank you for salvation. Thank you that we get to be your hands and feet on, on this earth. God, and that the gospel gets to spread spread wide. We love you. Jesus. It's in your name. We pray. Amen.

Click here to follow First15 Worship on your favorite streaming platform!

0 (0s): So would you use this time as we center our hearts and our attention on you to transform us from the inside out, it would be more like Jesus that you have reflection your heart, your love your mercy to the world around us in Jesus name. 0 (22s): stop. 0 (7m 40s): Stop, stop. Stop. you bet. 0 (10m 31s): You're the God of miracles. God of wonders and the God of the impossible. you are. You parked the waters. You split the sea, you car pathways through the desert. let's pray for anyone this morning. God, it just needs to know that you're near who needs to feel your presence, who needs healing, who needs provision, who needs encouragement? God, would you lift your eyes to where our help comes from this morning, help comes from you. 0 (11m 13s): The maker, heavens and the earth. We look to you this morning. We don't look to our circumstance. You're the rock we stand upon when everything else is shifting stirring and chaotic. Thank you that we can depend on your faith. God . 1 (16m 10s): Thank you, Lord. Thank you that the weak are made strong in the Savior's love. Thank you, Lord, and pray that you strengthen this today. Even as we talk about being strong God today and strong in the power of your mind and the strength that you make available to us providing to us. Lord, we just want to walk in it today. So strengthen each of us, Lord, spiritually guys strengthen us, physically strengthen us in every way that we need strength today. Lord, we pray for those who need encouragement for those who need friendship, companionship, Lord God, we just pray that you would meet and minister each person. 1 (16m 55s): Lord God prayed. There'd be real connection today. Lord, not just with you, although we desperately need that connection with you, but also just a connection with one to another Lord, God. So we pray for both a deep and abiding connection with you and just a wonderful connection. One to another Lord. So for those who are just needing to connect today for prayer, for encouragement, I pray that that would happen for those who have a word of encouragement who have the ability to, to pray and minister, Lord pray that every person would be doing that using their gifts and talents to bless the body of Christ, to build up the church, to Edify the church Lord. 1 (17m 35s): So thank you for this time. As we get into your word today, pray that you would be glorified. Thank you for this time in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. You may be seated. God bless you guys. How are you? We're good. Thank you. Worship team. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Hey, where's Shane Shane. Is he here? Shane there. Shane come on out and Shane is going to Zimbabwe 2 (17m 59s): Leaving in 10 days and let's 1 (18m 2s): Get Shane and Mike, can we steal this microphone here? Thank you. So Shane, tell us what you're going to do in Zimbabwe and when you leave and when you're coming 3 (18m 10s): Back, I'm going for about five months. I'm going to Zimbabwe and go and stay with some indigenous natives out there that have established ministry through bold faith. We're going to be sharing the gospel, preaching and ministries and yeah, I just want to thank, thank the church I've been coming here for about two years and the Lord has really done so much in my life. I was, yeah, I'm grateful. And don't think you have to go on a mission to serve God. You can be, your mission can be wherever you are. Yeah. And to whoever and I'm just grateful. Awesome. 1 (18m 48s): Do you still need financial support for your trip? I'm sure. Yeah. If you'd like to support Shane just right. It's making sure check out the harvest church, put Shane in the, in the memo there and we'll make sure he gets that before he leaves in 10 days. How's that? Can we pray for you? Yes, please. Lord. We pray for our brother. We thank you for who he is and for what you've called him to do in Jesus name. We pray that you would give him safe passage to Zimbabwe as he is there. And then coming back Lord and we pray for great fruitfulness, God that as he speaks, that there would just be power upon his words, power from the holy spirit. And as he speaks the eternal word of truth from the Bible Lord that there would just be power as people hear it and the people would be saved and healed and added to the kingdom Lord. 1 (19m 36s): So bless him, bless his team. Those who he will be ministering with Lord, we pray that this would be an amazing and fruitful time for the kingdom and that it would just be a time where Shane is encouraged and ex and further excited about his faith and that it would just be a time of real growth in him and in and real fruitfulness for him as well. So blessed our friend, our brother, we pray Lord in Jesus name. 3 (20m 2s): Amen. Amen. Yeah. Thank you. And, and any, any continued prayers would be much appreciated. 1 (20m 8s): Yeah. So yeah. You're gonna be gone for five months. So pray, put them on your calendar and pray for him over the next five months. That'd be awesome. We'll try to get updates as well over these five months to see, just to kind of communicate. What's what God's been doing through Shane. So it should be really good. 4 (20m 32s): So this guy was, yeah, I didn't even tell the joke and you guys were laughing. I liked it. He was, he was pushing this 1 (20m 43s): Line in this witch into a wardrobe. Somebody asked him, what are you? He said, none of your business, none of your business, Narnia your business, whatever. Yeah. When you have to give the punchline three times, it's not, not good. Good. Someone us got it. Hey, we're in second Timothy chapter two verses one through 14 today. And we're going to be just getting through half, half of the text, half of the chapter today, last week we talked about God's expectations of his people. 1 (21m 23s): He said, God expects bold faith, a holy life and faithfulness this week we continue. What does God expect from your faith in Christ part two, number one, God expects strength, God expects strength. And we see that in the text as Paul encourages Timothy, this is kind of Paul's Swan song, his final letter to Timothy soon, he'll be executed and he's in prison in Rome for the second time. So he's about to lose his life for the sake of the gospel. And he's just got a little bit of time left to communicate truth to the church. 1 (22m 8s): As he writes this letter to Timothy who pastors the church at Ephesus. And, and as we study today, Timothy second Timothy Paul's second letter to Timothy. We were going to sense the urgency within Paul's hearts and his mind to, as he communicates this message. I think about what you might communicate. If you were close to death, if you just had a few weeks or a few months to live, what would you communicate and think about the urgency of that communication. You wouldn't waste your time with small talk, most likely, but you in your conversations with people would go deep. 1 (22m 48s): You would say the things that you meant to say all along that are hard to say. Maybe you would tell some, tell somebody how much you love them. You would give words of advice to the people in your life. Things that you've learned and gleaned from the Lord. There would be a sense of excitement and urgency connected to what you're communicating because you know, your time is wrapping up. Often we put things off because we think, well, I'll say that next time I see that person. Or next time we gather and Paul said, Hey, there's not going to be a next time. And so 2 (23m 25s): He's communicating truth to Timothy Timothy. My dear son, he said in verse one first Timothy chapter two, verse one, Timothy, my dear son be Strang through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. Be straight through the grace that God gives you in Christ. Jesus, Paul speaking, as a man with experience, he has had to be strong through the grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ. And now he is able with passion and with credibility, with power, passion, and credibility is able to say, Timothy, my dear son be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus, Paul warns, Timothy of the difficulties of the ministry. 2 (24m 9s): I mean, it's difficult in the ministry, especially in the first century, Paul's in jail because of his ministry in Christ Jesus. So Paul warns, Timothy of the difficulties of the ministry and urges him to be strong in contrast to those who have defected. We read about those who have defected from the faith last year, weak. Where does that strength come from? Paul saying, Hey, be strong. He says, and then he says, this is where it comes from. Be, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ. Jesus. What does that mean? That grace, how do we define that word? Grace? It's the word Charisse, which is means a number of different things means with the support of God's unmerited favor, not reliance on our natural ability work to be strong. 2 (25m 3s): So we're strong in the reality and the knowledge that God's grace is sufficient for our lives. That in itself will give us strength and confidence because we know that God's grace is sufficient to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, no matter what our past has been, no matter what our mistakes have been, God's grace is sufficient, but then beyond that, there's a grace upon our lives as followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ, race that is available to us in him to stand strong. And we're going to unpack that a little bit. As we move, move forward, Ephesians six, 10 says this, a final word, be strong in the Lord. 2 (25m 47s): And in his mighty power, his mighty power is a grace gift that God has given to us. There's power available to us in Christ. And that power is a grace gift that is extended to us because of Christ. His mighty power is a grace gift in Luke chapter two, verse 40. Speaking of Jesus, it says as the child grew and waxed strong in the spirit filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him. Now that's not grace that forgives sin because Jesus was without sin. 2 (26m 29s): So there was no grace needed to be extended to Jesus. So the grace that is talked about is the grace that we're talking about this morning, that grace, that gives strength and that hope and clarity and peace, all of those things. So this isn't a grace that forgives it was a grace that extended, how are they gave us power to do what God would have us to do in Luke chapter one, verse 30 speaking to Mary, the mother of Jesus and the angel said unto her fear, not Mary for thou has found favor with God. That word favor is that word , which is the word grace. And so the angel is telling her, you found favor, you found grace with the Lord with God. 2 (27m 15s): And so Mary found favor with the Lord. She found grace in that what we need in our lives, we need the grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ. I pray that all the time over our church, whether it's, you know, we're talking about a new project or just our impact in the community, or as we like Shane goes out on the mission field, we pray for favor and grace, we just ask the Lord's protection and covering for that person or for a price object. And this is what strengthens us. This gives us the ability to remain strong, even when we're up against difficulty. And especially when we're up against difficulty. Sometimes we're trying to muster strength, but what God expects he provides when God expects us to be strong. 2 (28m 1s): It is through the grace that we have in the Lord. Jesus Christ. First one again, Timothy, my dear son be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. So we find our strength to stand firm in Christ, by standing firm in Christ. Let me read that again. So we find our strength to stand firm in Christ, by standing firm in Christ, by his grace. Strength comes by his grace power comes by his grace favor comes by his grace. Don't forget. Also forgiveness comes by his grace life in Christ is live from Starbucks to finish because of his grace, grace for salvation grace for godly living th that we would have the strength to live godly in Christ Jesus, that strength and that desire comes from God. 2 (29m 1s): It comes from the Godhead. We receive that from God and then we're able to live it out. God gives what he expects. He gives us what he expects from us. All we have to do is agree with him and say, God, I, I want this. I want it to be strong in the power of your mind, through the grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ. And as we agree with God, we are able to walk in it. Strength comes by his grace power comes by his grace favor comes by his grace, grace for salvation, for godly living grace restraints. If, when we need it, number one, God expects strength from us, but it's not just this unattainable strength is strength. 2 (29m 46s): That's out of reach. God actually gives what he expects. What kind of strength do you need for your season of life and what kind of grace do you need right now for the relationships that you're in for your financial needs, for the things that you're facing in life? What kind of strength do you need? There's grace for it? I find that the grace that God extends is usually practical. Grace realized through just the practical walking out of our faith as followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ, doing what he's asked us to do, getting involved in small groups, getting involved with the body of Christ. 2 (30m 29s): That's why, as we prayed open opening the service, we prayed that God would connect people. That people would be connected because often the strength that we need comes from that connection that we have one with another. So what kind of strength do you need when I'm lacking strength? I'll talk to my wife or I'll talk to a staff member or I'll talk to a pastor in the area and I'll, I'll find the strength that I need through that fellowship, connecting one to another. So what does that practical step that you need to take to connect with others so that you find the strength that you need to do, what you need to do in Christ? Jesus, we all kinds of small groups available at the church designed to strengthen people in their faith, small groups designed to help people against temptation against addiction. 2 (31m 19s): I've got men's group Bible study, men's groups, Bible, study groups, journey groups, pure desire groups, all kinds of groups designed to strengthen men in their faith so that they're able to stand strong because that is what God is expecting of us. But he provides the way to that, that, that path of strength we've got women's groups, Bible, study groups, journey groups. We've got youth groups for junior high and high school meeting weekly. We've got kids groups from fifth to, from fifth and sixth graders. We've got, we hosted in a group on Thursday nights up in the shop. And dozens of people show up for the NAA group every week. 2 (31m 60s): And dozens of people show up for the peer desire groups and dozens of people show up for the journey groups and the Bible study groups. All of these groups are grace groups designed to give us strength. It's, it's a very practical way, very easy way to receive the strength that is needed. We just have to be willing to step into it and to begin to be a part of the God expects strength, but he gives us the grace to do and to live what he expects of you. We're struggling in an area of your life. Needing strength just happened to the Lord, say, God, what is the next practical step that I take? 2 (32m 40s): Who do I need to talk to? What group do I need to join? What, what do I need to be a part of so that I can get strength for the journey ahead of me? We're not, we're never meant to be in this alone. Paul communicates truth, encouraging Timothy to be strong because Timothy probably needed that word of encouragement from Paul. And it's interesting that Paul who is in prison is the one encouraging Timothy, who was not. So maybe you're in a precarious position yourself, but God wants to use you to speak into the life of someone else. And you think, well, who am I to speak that life to someone else I'd got this past, or I'm in this circumstance where I'm up against this challenge? 2 (33m 23s): Well, forget about all that. Just do what God has asked you to do. And then out of that, obedience, you'll find strength. As you encourage others, you find strength as you allow yourself to be encouraged by others, you will find strength back to for a second. Timothy chapter two verse two says, you may, you have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these trues to others, to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. Number one, God expects strength, but also number two, God expects us to teach others that interesting Jesus said, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit. How did he make disciples? 2 (34m 3s): Who was he? Who was God spot speaking to? And who was Jesus speaking to anyway, speaking to the 12, right? Speaking to the disciples. But who else? He's speaking to the church. He's speaking to all of us, all of us have this responsibility, this expectation to go make disciples. How do you make a disciple? A disciple maker is just someone who goes and teaches truth to others so that they understand truth about who God is. And so God has this expectation. Paul's communicating this expectation. He says, you have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach now we see the discipleship process here. Now teach these trues to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. 2 (34m 48s): So we're not mad to just be a bucket, collecting all of this truth. We're meant to be a stream where the, the truth comes into us, flows into our lives and bubbles out and flows into other people's lives. All of us. So we're just holding onto this truth. Like we were carrying around a five gallon pail of all this truth and we never spill it out in anybody else's lives. God expects us to teach others. Remember God gives what he expects. If you are new in the faith, you can still teach others. You can say, God has forgiven my sins. 2 (35m 30s): And let me tell you about my experience. And when you tell somebody else about your experience, how God is forgiving, your sins are teaching someone about the goodness and the compassion and the kindness of God. Last week, during second service, I challenged the church to go tell someone about Jesus. I said, sometime in the next month and the next week, sometime soon, go and tell somebody about Jesus. And so I said, Hey, I'm going to jump into this challenge as well. And so sometime this week, I'm going to share the gospel with someone outside of harvest church. It's easy to share the gospel with people who are in the camp already, right? 2 (36m 14s): It's not really what God intended my job to preach and do, do we equip the church, the saints to do the work of the ministry, Ephesians four 11. So I said, I will go find somebody to share the gospel with. Who's not easy to share the gospel with. Right? And so I did. And so this week I kind of forgot about it the first couple of days. And I remembered, oh man, I gotta step up to this challenge. And so I began to pray for God to open up an opportunity to kind of pave the way and Jolene and I were down in Southern California for a few days this week, just kind of getting a little break. And, and while we were in a mall down in thousand Oaks, I said, okay, Jolene was at a store and I'm just kinda hanging around. 2 (36m 56s): And I realized, Hey, my phone needs a new, new cover on it. So it's all cracked and it just needs a new, you know, clear cover. So I was just looking around and I felt like the Lord said, go get your phone fixed and then share the gospel with that guy at that kiosk. So I said, okay, God, but you've got to pave the way. Right? So God makes a way for what he wants us to do. So I said, all right, Laura. So I had been reading my Bible while I was waiting for Jolene. So I had him, my screensaver on my phone, a passage from John. And so I thought, I'm just going to leave this open, what I pass over my phone to this guy. And it talks about how to get saved, you know? 2 (37m 37s): So I give him that and he could tell, he read it for a minute and then he's turned it off because he didn't want to read it. And then he re repaired my phone. And I just simply said, Hey, I want you to know that Jesus loves you and that he died for your sins. He's like, well, that's very kind. Thank you. I said, no, really like, Jesus really, really loves. You cares about you and he died for your sins. He said, well, that's very kind. Thank you. And so that's as far as it went, but what did I do? I planted seeds. And now what am I doing? I told Jolene what I had done. And, and, and I said, I told her, I said, now I'm praying for not only him, but for his whole family. 2 (38m 19s): And for his whole influence that everybody that he comes in contact with once he gives his life to the Lord would be saved also. And this is what I'm expecting. This is what I'm expecting. Big picture. I'm expecting you to get to heaven and have this guy come up to me and say, Hey, member at that thousand Oaks, small, when you, the gospel with me, look at all these people who also got saved as a result of that seed that you planted. That's my expectation. Why? Because we're meant to have kingdom expectations because God is doing kingdom sized things within our lives. And so sometimes we can get burdened down and say, ah, I don't want to do this. But man, think about the fruitfulness that is possible in Christ Jesus, when we're simply willing to extend truth and communicate truth to people willing to do what God expects. 2 (39m 5s): You think that God expects, she did teach the answer's yes. Not a trick question. Go make disciples. How do you make disciples? You communicate truth. You teach truth. So you go make disciples of all nations, Zimbabwe included and teaching them to obey everything that teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded. That's that's the expectation for, for believers. The expectation for believers is that we would teach others and make disciples of other people. When you tell people about Jesus, you are essentially teaching again. I'm about Jesus. 2 (39m 46s): So have you told anybody about Jesus recently to the difficult people like, you know, your gardener or the person at the shopping center or your doctor or your attorney? Have you shared the gospel with those people in your life? If you haven't know, encourage you to do so. I challenged second service last week to do it by the next week. So I'm encouraging you guys to do the same thing and I'll get into second service and encourage them for those who didn't do it. You forgot about it. Cause I forgot about it for the first couple of days, but I would encourage each of you to do the same thing to share the gospel just, and it doesn't need to be a weird thing. 2 (40m 29s): In fact, it shouldn't be a weird thing. It should be just a natural thing. You may, you may feel a little weird because you haven't done it before, but just begin to do it. And like anything else it's like riding a bike. Once you figure it out, she just kind of, it becomes easy. You just say, Jesus loves you. And you say it was sincerity. Do you know that Jesus died for your sins? He just loves you and it, and if they take it, if they want to talk more about it, then you can do that. And you can just say, yeah, you know, 20 years ago, when I gave my life to Jesus, I was a mess and God just rescued me. It's been an incredible journey. Or man, last year or two years ago, I got saved and God's been working in my life and doing great stuff. 2 (41m 10s): He's showing me his genuine care for me is abundant grace for me that he loves me unconditionally. You just share your story and watch what God will do. So how many times for accountability, how many this week? And I'll throw my hat in the ring again this week. How many we'll share the gospel this week? Go and raise your hand. Yeah. Can raise it high. Like, cause you want to be like convicted about it, right? Like I man, I'm going to do this. Cool. How many need prayer for boldness that you'll share the gospel this week. 2 (41m 52s): All right, sounds good. I'm going to pray right now in Jesus' name, Lord for the, those who need boldness, everybody raising their hand, watching online. I don't care, Lord. It doesn't matter if this person is watching and 10 years from now and an archive online, I pray that that person would raise their hand and say, yes, I'm going to share the gospel. So I pray for boldness God you've, you've given us this directive, this, this clearly communicated expectation that we will share the gospel that we will teach others. And so I pray that you give us boldness and then words to speak in Jesus name. Thank you, Lord. Amen. So I'm going to check in with you next week. Not next week. I'll check in with you in the next couple of weeks and let you know or talk about whether, whether or not you did what you said you were going to do. 2 (42m 38s): So how many again are going to do it? All right. Sounds good. I appreciate that. People who keep their hands down, honestly, just because I'm thinking they just need more encouragement. They're not ready to do it. And that's okay. Let's see. Where are we here? God expects us to teach others. God gives us the grace to do what he expects. Number three, God expects us to endure suffering. Yeah, I know. Right? Endure suffering. So Paul speaking with authority about this area of suffering. 2 (43m 20s): So he's not just, you know, in an ivory tower somewhere communicating his truth. He's been suffering into our suffering. Along with me, Paul wrote as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. So Paul uses a soldier. As his example, soldiers enter the military with the expectation that suffering or danger or harm may come their way. It's the nature of the life chosen. So the life of a follower of Jesus Christ is similar to that of a life of a soldier. We're enlisting have been enlisted, have been called into the army of God. 2 (44m 5s): And the expectation I know as, as, as boring as it may sound, the expectation is that we would endure suffering. Soldiers are on a mission. What do they do? They're there to fight the enemy to defend the country. They're there to do what is expected civilians on the other hand are consumed with civilian life civilians forgets. There is an army civilians are thinking about their own lives. Civilians, do what they want to do. So do you align yourself more after that description, that little brief description, do you align yourself more? 2 (44m 46s): Do you see yourself more as a soldier or as a civilian? Paul is saying, Hey, you are called as a believer as a follower of the Lord, Jesus Christ. You are a soldier in God's army. Don't get distracted by civilian life. So stand strong against the enemy and, and endure the suffering that is before you followers of Jesus or like soldiers stand strong against the enemy. That's what you're called to do. We wrestle not against flesh and blood enemies, but against principalities of darkness, right? So we need to stand strong against the enemy. The Bible says that the enemy walks about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. 2 (45m 27s): So he's out there. He's looking to destroy you to devour you, to discourage you, to hinder you. So stand strong. It's helpful to remember that we're in this battle. So when we experience suffering or persecution or temptation or whatever it may be, it's helpful to remember. This is just par for the course, it goes with the territory. Followers of Jesus are to live like soldiers. So stand strong against the enemy, teach others about the kingdom of God and do what it is expected by God's grace. Part of what is expected is that we didn't do our suffering in Romans five, three and four in the NIV. 2 (46m 10s): It says not only. So we also glory in our sufferings. We glory in our sufferings. Often we're not glory in our sufferings. We're like complaining in our suffering. There's like, Lord deliver me from my sufferings. And here they're glorying in their suffering. Having been counted were the, to suffer for the gospel. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, character, hope, personally, perseverance character, and hope all derive from our suffering experiences. 2 (46m 52s): So need perseverance. If you need character, if you need hope, don't be sorry. Surprised if you get a little suffering to kind of buffet your flesh and to prepare you for what God has for you. First five, second, Timothy two says and athletes. So we've talked about soldiers. Now we're talking about athletes and athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. And so on Sunday morning, we talk about the rules, the four engagement. What does God expect? What does God require of us so that we might win the prize. First Corinthians 9, 24 through 27, says this, do you not know in a race? All the runners run, but only one gets the prize. 2 (47m 34s): And so we're actually in a race not to get a participation ribbon. Okay? I don't know anybody who joins her race to get a participation ribbon, right? Everybody runs the race to win, right? You don't. I used to run races. I would never run to even get second place. I did not want, I didn't want it. I was okay if I got it, but I didn't run for second. I ran to win. I wanted to, to win. There was this gal during this strawberry stampede every year she would, for two years, she would catch me and pass me in the race. Finally, the third year it occurred to me that this gal was probably going to try to do the same thing again this year. 2 (48m 20s): And so the third year, about the last half a mile, I look back and sure enough, Kristin is on my tail again. And I told her, I said, not this year here, Christian. And I just pushed it and left her in my, in my dusts. And I, I needed that encouragement to win the race, right. Even if my win was only over Christian, right? So cannot let her win. Beat me again. Come on. Do you not know that in a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize run in such a way as to get the prize. 2 (48m 60s): Yeah. If you get second place, celebrate it. But man, don't run. Like you're just trying to get run to win. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly. And that's part of the reason I challenge us to run with intentionality. So what's the intention this week, we're going to share the gospel with someone, right? Jesus loves you. You get your coffee. I was helping a guy load refrigerator yesterday and I was praying. I said, Lord, help us to get this. 2 (49m 40s): I said, I said, Jesus, help us. You know, I'm just any way I can get the word of the Lord out. And you know, the gal gal kind of just smirked and she thought it was probably a little crazy, but I seriously, I needed Jesus up to get that refrigerator up on that truck. So find an opportunity to tell people about Jesus and see what God will do. It will become life-giving for you. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly. I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. Now I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I've preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the price. So you're in it to win it. 2 (50m 19s): Competition is inherent in sports. You play to win. So think about your faith this way. Like, Hey, I'm in it to win the crown. I want to finish. Well, like Paul talks about second to me, the two six and hard-working farmers. So we talked about soldiers and athletes. Now we're going to be talking about farmers second, Timothy two, six, and hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. So hardworking farmers are the ones who are to enjoy the, the, the fruit of their labor. If you don't put your effort into it, there's going to be little fruit to enjoy. But there for the hard working person, the farmer there's fruit to be enjoyed. So you can have this expectation that God will bless you with the fruits of your labor. 2 (51m 4s): And you will enjoy that fruit here in this life and in the life to come. So in other words, it's not all hard work. There is reward. What's the fruit of your efforts. Well, some people are going to get saved. Some people are going to get healed because you're going to say, Hey, you know what? To someone who's okay, injured or sick. Hey, you know what I believe Jesus is a healer. The God that I serve is a healer. So I'd like to pray for you and just maybe God will heal you. And so you take the opportunity to share the gospel that way. And you're teaching someone that way. You're teaching something about Jesus. He's a healer. He's the great physician. 2 (51m 45s): He loves you. And so, and just set up saying, Hey, I'll pray for you or something like that. Say, Hey, I'm praying in Jesus' name because God's a healer and just be bold about your faith. So there's going to be all kinds of all kinds of fruit, salvation, people healed, but also internal strength. There's just something about a strength that Wells up within us and a boldness that Wells up within us when we're doing what God has called us to do, working hard as a soldier, an athlete, a farmer, great pictures of, of hardworking people. So you'll find strength boldness for Christ. 2 (52m 26s): You'll, you'll find yourself steadfast in the faith. Like you won't struggle nearly as much and you won't wander off course nearly as much when you're playing by God's rules, competing by the rules, doing what God has asked us to do. And then you'll have this fearlessness. You'll have the spear. Lessness. I remember when first sharing the gospel I was in living in Louisiana, we would go down to new Orleans and we'd pack lunches for the homeless and we'd share the gospel with them. It was terrifying. It was terrified before that actually we would pack lunches and go to San Louis and share the gospel with homeless people in San Louis. And it was terrifying. 2 (53m 6s): One day, one day, they wanted me to do some open air preaching. You know what open air preaching is like in front of everybody at the park, he just started preaching. I was scared third to death. And so fortunately they didn't make me do it. Cause it would have been a train wreck. Right. But we did share the gospel. I just wasn't about to do some open air preaching at that season of my life. I might do it now. I'd probably do it now because the fearlessness of God is I've grown in my boldness because I've just been doing it for a long time. So it's just like anything you don't, you're not afraid to get on the bike. If you've been riding your bike your whole life, because you just, you know how to ride a bike. You're not bragging about it. You just know how to ride a bike. So you get on your right. You're not bragging. 2 (53m 46s): Oh, let me ride my bike. It's just natural. Right? You just, you just get up there and do it. So you begin to share the gospel and you're not bragging about your ability. You just say I do this all the time. So of course it's going to be a little easier for me. You'll see an increased faith and faithfulness you'll experience. Peace, a close walk with Jesus. All of this is the fruit that you'll experience as you, as you do these things that we're talking about as we get ready to ride up here. Second Timothy two verse seven says, Paul says, think about what well I'm saying the Lord will help you understand all these things. So maybe in your own mind you say, Lord, what do you want me to pull from this? What is it that you expect me to do as a result of this message? First eight, always remember that Jesus Christ a descendant of king David. 2 (54m 29s): It was raised from the dead. This is the good news that I preach. So just to be clear, this is what Paul is saying. This is the gospel that I preach. And because I preach this good news, I'm suffering and have been changed again, like a criminal, but the word of God cannot be changed. Be clear about what you're preaching. I was at 1 0 2, the new worship center this week. And a guy came in and nice guy. And he's like, oh, I'm so excited that your church is going to be here. I said, oh, thanks man. Come by any time. And he said, you know what? I believe I said, no, what do you believe? He said, I believe that the 12 apostles went out to buy two and two became Mormons. Two became Jehovah's witnesses. 2 (55m 9s): Two became bow. And he just, you know, I I'm thinking to myself, this is not the gospel that we preach. We preach that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world. That you can only come to faith in Jesus Christ. No man comes to the father except through him. So it's not a convoluted, confusing faith. We preach Jesus Christ and him crucified in him, resurrected from the dead and him returning in Jesus' name. This is what we preach. So let's figure out who we are in Christ and then preach that gospel truth. Otherwise it's confusing. And it doesn't lead people anywhere, but to a path of destruction. 2 (55m 52s): And because I preach this good news, Paul says, I'm suffering. You won't suffer. You say two of the apostles were Mormons too, or Muslims too, or Jehovah's witnesses. You want to suffer anything because nobody gives a what's the word I should use here. Nobody cares. Nobody cares that you're preaching. That kind of gospel. It doesn't bum anybody out. It doesn't confront anybody with truth. What confronts people with the truth is the fact that Jesus died for their sins. And apart from him, they are, they're heading to this one place called hell and in Christ, we have eternal life. That's what gets people's attention. 2 (56m 33s): So Paul was preaching some, you know, some confused gospel. He wouldn't be in jail. They wouldn't care. So I'm willing to endure anything. If it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen. This is a trustworthy saying, if we die with him, we will also live with him. If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. I love this part. If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful for, he cannot deny who he is. Remind everyone about these things and command them in God's presence to stop fighting. Over words, such arguments are useless and they can ruin those who hear them. 2 (57m 14s): What does God expect from your faith in Christ? Jesus part two, number one, God expects strength. He expects you to teach others and he expects you to endure suffering with that. That's my divorce, your team back. We're going to stand and we're going to sing some more songs. And so B write down in your, in your calendar. This is how I get things on. I write it, my calendar. So what I'll write my calendar is share the gospel with somebody this week. Someone who's not easy to share the gospel with, write it down and then pray over your day and ask the Lord for clarity about that. So let's go and stand up. Thank you, Lord, for what you're doing for her, what you're speaking and for what you've called us to you. 2 (57m 55s): Thank you that you've put expectations on our life Lord, but with the expectation, the power to do what you've asked us to do the ability by your grace to do those things. So help us. We pray Lord in Jesus name. Amen. Let's worship 0 (58m 16s): When Jesus . I see , your presence here with us this day. 0 (1h 6m 59s): Thank you for filling our tape that we received this morning and be a vessel to those around us who are lost and hurting. We want to be good clay in the hands of a good Potter and make us instruments of your peace, salt, and light. Jesus. Amen. Amen. We're 5 (1h 7m 32s): Going to have an opportunity now for you to come forward for prayer. If you're, if you're interested, if you have any needs this morning, but just as Steve was preaching, I was really struck with verse seven that says, think over what I say for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. What Steve shared with us this morning, the call of the gospel, the call to share the truth, the call to walk in righteousness and holiness the call as we've been over these past few weeks. And I just feel like there's some of you who really you think about it. Now, you don't think about what I say. Think about what was preached. Think about what God spoke to you. And then we walk out the door and we get busy with life. 5 (1h 8m 16s): If you really want to think about it, if you really want to, to move forward in obedience to what God has said this morning, if you want reassurance and reminder, I encourage you to come and get prayer. If you have a need for healing, if you have a need for God's intervention in your life, this is the time to come. We've been, I've been getting praise reports back on, on things that we've been praying for. Whether it's here or in the, on the prayer chain, God's working. He answers prayer. If you're hurting, if you need anything, I encourage you to come forward. Prayer teams will be up here and ready to pray with you. If you don't need prayer, go out, have a great day, go up to the baptisms and then buzz down and take a look at 1 0 2. 5 (1h 9m 1s): It's going to be a great day. Great day in the Lord. Hallelujah.

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

My daughter read "Animal Farm" in middle school. Luckily she had a teacher who could unpack the symbolism and interpret the text in such a way that she understood and enjoyed the Orwell classic. Sometimes it takes a little extra study to understand the things we read in Scripture, too. Shane & Shane's rendition of "Before the Throne of God Above" sends us from Hebrews to the Old Testament and back to learn more about Jesus as our Great High Priest.     Pack your bags with a few nuggets of information mined on this week's podcast before you journey into the book of Hebrews for yourself. I love it when God weaves memories, music, and Truth together to reveal a beautiful tapestry. I often step back and think to myself, "You've had this picture planned all along." More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

Have you ever been in so much pain (physically or emotionally) that you practically howl? King David wrote what many theologians refer to as the "Howling Psalm" in Psalm 13. Shane & Shane has put this song of David to their own melody and titled it "Psalm 13" in their album of Psalms. This song will help us meditate on this short and powerful Psalm this week. On this episode I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include Write out Scripture Journal your response to Scripture Pray the words of Scripture Meditate on Scripture (use the power of song to help you) Use an outside resource or commentary Sorrow - Psalm 13:1-2 Prayer - Psalm 13:3-4 Rejoicing - Psalm 13:5-6 A wonderful resource for future study of the Psalms - Treasury of David by Charles Spurgeon     Additional Resources Lyrics and chords This Week's Challenge Read all of Psalm 13. Then write out the Psalm two verses at a time and journal beneath that. Then pray this Psalm. Pray through your journaling. Finally, put this song on repeat this week and meditate on this Scripture. Dave: Gee, that’s a big introduction. I’ve met funnier. Elizabeth: There’s more Dave. Dave O’Neil has been in the business of comedy for 20 years, and is one of Australia’s most recognizable stand-up comics, having put in 15 Melbourne international comedy festivals and dozens of comedy clubs nationally. On screen you will have seen Dave as Team Captain in the ABC TV comedy quiz show Tractor Monkeys, as well as dishing out life advice in The Agony of Life, The Agony of Modern Manners, The Agony of The Mind, Can of Worms, plus messing about on Adam Hills In GorDave Street Tonight and Good News Week. He is probably most well-known for the honour of being the guest with the most appearances (over 50) on ABC TV’s ever popular Spicks & Specks. Dave O’Neil, welcome to Writers’ Tête-à-Tête with Elizabeth Harris. Dave: Welcome. Thank you. Lovely to be here. Pleasure to be called a writer, as opposed to a comedian. Elizabeth: Well, isn’t this your fifth book? Dave: Yeah yeah, two were kids’ books. My partner and I did them in Australia before we had kids. Elizabeth: When you had more time. Dave: We had more time, that’s right. And one’s called Lies That Parents Tell You, so I wouldn’t write that now. My daughter sits up in bed reading it and quotes it back to me. Elizabeth: How old is she? Dave: Ten. Yes, it’s tough. Elizabeth: I was at Kaz Cooke’s book launch about … Dave: On girl power? Yeah, she’s great. I’ve got to buy that book! Elizabeth: So Dave, you’ve been through so much in your career, but today I want to concentrate on your hilarious book, The Summer of ’82. Dave: Sure. Elizabeth: It’s a real feel-good book, and you cover some intense themes. Discipline. Masculinity. Sexuality. Mateship. Stalking. Dave: Stalking – that’s right. I followed a girl in Mildura. Back then it wasn’t known as “stalking”; it was known as “unrequited love”. Sexuality – there’s not much sexuality going on in there, I can tell you that. There’s a lack of activity in that department, that’s for sure. Elizabeth: You were talking about how you were giving advice to 17-year-old virgins. Dave: That’s right. A little girl at school would ask me for romance advice. I was like, that’s not who you go to for romance advice. You see, I was a nice guy, so the girls talked to me. Elizabeth: We like nice guys. So getting back to this book: What inspired you to write it, and what’s your favourite memory from summer? Dave: I always wanted to write a memoir from the 80s, and I wrote a few chapters and put it aside. I saw that TV show This is England on SBS, about the young guys growing up in the Housing Commission area, and I thought I’ve got to write something like that, because that’s in my era. But their show ended with incest and murder, whereas that never happened to me, so I thought why not write a more positive recollection of that time. So I wrote a few chapters and put it aside. And then my son started high school, and so you go to the local high school and it brought back all these memories from when I was in high school. Elizabeth: At Mitcham High? Dave: I went to Mitcham High, yeah. Back then we had a choice of the tech or the high school, and if you were Catholic, you went to Catholic school. We weren’t Catholic. So now, and I’m talking about the government schools, not the private schools – you can choose from 3 or 4 around here, so you go to this school or that school, and they’re all the same basically. They haven’t changed much since 1982. They look the same. You’ve got the oval, the canteen, big classrooms, kids sitting around, so they haven’t changed at all, so I thought I should write that book again. It brought back all those memories, and so my son started school, and that’s why I did it. That’s why. Elizabeth: Now we know. Dave: It’s just something to do. As comedians, we’ve got to have something to do, apart from studio gigs. Elizabeth: That’s good. So talking a bit about your children, you mentioned your parents Kev and Joyce – “Joyce the Voice”. Dave: Yep, “Joyce the Voice”. Elizabeth: And what I’m wondering now is, are you parenting your children differently from how you were parented then? Dave: Definitely, definitely. We got hit for a start. Elizabeth: What with? Dave: A belt. So Kev would get very angry – it’s in the book – he would get very angry, come running in in a singlet, trying to hide his nether regions, swinging a belt above his head, and whack us in the ... Elizabeth: My dad had a strap up on the fridge. I think we had a very similar upbringing. Dave: I don’t hit my children, but obviously parenting your kids back then was a bit easier, because you’d just say “I’ll hit you”, and that was a full stop to the conversation, whereas all I can do is yell at them. Elizabeth: How about cracking some jokes – does that work? Dave:  Yeah, crack some jokes, try and alleviate the situation, but my daughter in particular doesn’t like that. Elizabeth: Is that because she’s heard them all before? Dave: Yeah, she’s heard them all before. “It’s not funny Dad!” My mum and dad were pretty involved with us. My dad was a Scout leader and staff, so we spent a fair bit of time with him. He was a good role model, and Joyce was introvertly involved in our lives. But he’s even more involved these days – at school pickup and all that. There’s a lot more dads involved now. Elizabeth: That’s fantastic, so you’ve got that support as well. When we met at your book launch, you told me that you only know comedians. Dave: It’s true. I don’t know any writers really. Elizabeth: Well, you know me. Dave: I know you. And I know Arnold ... who lives around here, who wrote Scheherezade Cafe. He's famous! (Ed: Cafe Scheherazade by Arnold Zable) Elizabeth: Maybe you can introduce me to Arnold. Is that like Arnold on Happy Days? Dave: (Laughs) He’s had a book out called Fido – the Box of the Fido. Elizabeth: I can’t believe I made Dave O’Neil laugh. Dave:  So I see him on the street here, in Fairfield, and I talk to him about writing and stuff. Elizabeth: That brings me to something about fame. You’re a very famous star. Dave: Not that famous. Elizabeth: Well, we think you are. So, what we want to know is, do you like being recognized when you’re out and about, or does fame have a downside? Dave: No, my level of fame is pretty small, so people like Dave Hughes or Glenn Robbins, or Carl Barron for instance – they can get hassled all the time. Elizabeth: Well, in my network, I have a number of people who would love to meet you. Dave: Really? Well, tell ’em I’m around. Elizabeth: And they’re going to be really disappointed that here we are, at the Grandview in Fairfield – it’s a stunning place, gorgeous building, lovely people. Dave: They’re nice people here. Elizabeth: Michael? Dave:  Michael and Noah, yep. Elizabeth: Jenny? Dave: Michael, Noah and Jenny – they’re all the higher level management here. Elizabeth: They are, and they made me feel very, very welcome. Made me a coffee. Smiled and when I offered to pay, wouldn’t take my money. It’s fantastic! Dave: Ah that’s good. I didn’t tell them – you tell someone and they pass it on. It’s all on my tab, probably. My level of fame is not that high. Occasionally when you go interstate – the more you go interstate like Queensland – people get excited about you, but certainly around Fairfield Road, no one cares about you. Elizabeth: Well, they could have chimed some…”Captain Cocoa”… Dave:  What, with the band? That’s right. Well when the band broke up, someone did say, “How is Dave O’Neil going to be famous now?” Ambition for fame… Elizabeth: Let’s stop right there. Was it to meet girls? Dave: Probably. Definitely not music. We went and saw bands, and just thought: Why can’t we be in a band? And the guy at high school was … famous 80s band … “hands up in the air”…I didn’t see it. And so we thought, that’s the way to meet girls, get up on stage. Elizabeth: Did it work? Dave: Well, I met Sonia, who…but anyway, definitely does work. Being in a band definitely does give you the attention you want as a teenager. We used to play at Catholic girls’ schools …dances …You didn’t have to be good; we weren’t good musicians. Elizabeth: I want to talk about Sonia. You did invest a lot of time and you write about that in your great book. Then you say you end up having a better relationship with her younger brother. Dave:  Well, that’s right. What happened was that I hitchhiked to Mildura to see her on New Year’s Eve to surprise her. And she was surprised, particularly her dad. And they gave me a lift to the caravan park where I stayed for New Year’s Eve. And the younger brother – I can’t remember his name – he was a great kid, and so we got on really well. He’s probably a year, two years younger than me. Was it Shane – Shane? So we ended up hanging out together. Elizabeth: Was it Malcolm? Dave:  Malcolm, that’s right. And we got on really well, whereas Sonia and me didn’t get on well. Elizabeth: Well, that might have something to do with the boyfriend too. Dave: She had a boyfriend who I also got on well with. Probably married, those guys. So, yeah, good times. Elizabeth: So getting back to that, I just want to know, for all those young men who think they’ll never get a date, much less have a child: you’ve had three, haven’t you? Dave: Yes. Elizabeth: What dating advice can you offer? Dave:  Dating advice? That’s a good one. It’s been so long since I’ve gone on a date…not since the 80s. Surprise question – dating advice. Ask someone out – you know a good thing is to ask someone out for a drink or for something during the day. That’s what I read on some dating websites. Ask someone out during the day where there’s no pressure. At night I think there’s a fair bit of pressure. I reckon ask them out for a drink during the day or late afternoon. Elizabeth: What about a play date? Dave: Well, if you’re parents, definitely. Elizabeth: That seems to work well. Dave: Yeah, I think in our age group - I Dave’t know how old you are, but I’m middle-aged – there’s definitely a bit of that going on with divorce and separated parents. And fair enough. Elizabeth: And there’s a really good place to go in St Kilda called St Kilda Adventure Playground. Dave: Oh, I’ve never been there! Elizabeth: It’s great. Dave: That’s great. Elizabeth: And there’s a fellow who runs it – he’s a youth worker but he’s also a musician. Adrian Thomas. Check him out – he’s fantastic. So what do you like to do in your spare time? Dave: I like to watch TV. Elizabeth: Yourself perhaps? Dave: Not myself. I don’t like watching myself. I did a spot on one of those comedy galas this year. I hadn’t seen it; I watched it, I thought it was pretty good. I’m pretty happy … I was judge of myself. Elizabeth: Of course it’s good. Dave: What happened is…so I spend a lot of time with 3 children. Once I get them to bed at night, or if I’m home during the day, I do like to watch a bit of TV. And I watch a mixture of – I watch a few movies but more serious these days. There’s a mixture of comedies and drama. I do like a good drama, you know like Vikings or something like that. Elizabeth: I’m a fan of Doc Martin myself because I’m a nurse. Dave: Oh ya Doc Martin. Is he Aspergers? Yeah, must be Aspergers. I’ve been watching … the comedy show … it’s quite funny … so I watch that, get some laughs out of that. What else have I been taping…oh yeah…West World on Foxtel. Elizabeth: Oh yes. More fun to watch yourself, you know. Dave: Watch yourself? Yeah, no thanks. Elizabeth: What I’d love you to do is share an excerpt from your great book. Dave: Sure. Do you want me to read it to you or tell you it? Elizabeth: Whatever works for you. Dave: I’ll tell you a story. This is the story of The Bomb, the laying of The Bomb. Basically, what happened was we finished school and we went home. No, we went and registered for the dole, and then we went home. Elizabeth: As we all did. Dave: And my kids said to me, “How did you know how to make bombs before the internet?” Well, we didn’t need the internet. We had this chap called Brian every night, 6 o’clock. He used to tell us everything we needed to know on the Channel 9 news every night. Elizabeth: Can you sing the song? Dave: (Sings) “Brian told me, Brian told me, Brian told me so I know everything I need to know, cos Brian told me so.” Elizabeth: Great tone. Dave: Great tone, yeah, I wasn’t just a comedian; I was a singer. So you can imagine these four teenage boys and Mum and Dad, and we couldn’t see the TV – Dad was the only one who could see the TV – we could hear it. He positioned himself in the chair that sits there. So we could hear it. We heard this Brian guy say: “Two boys were arrested today in suburban Adelaide for making homemade bombs.” We were like, oh my God, you could hear a pin drop in the house. Then he told us how to make it, by using chlorine and brake fuel. We were looking at each other, like, we’ve got chlorine – we’ve got a pool – and we’ve got brake fluid; Dad’s a Trades teacher. “So can we please be excused from the table, Dad?” Within 10 minutes we were making bombs. So the next day we got my mates together and we made – we decided to up the ante and make some really big bombs. And we made this great bomb, but we didn’t want to throw it; we were gutless like any terrorist organization, so we recruited younger, stupider people like Phil, who lived in the house backing here on the paddock. He stuck his head over and said, “What are yous guys doing?” So we got him to throw the bomb, and he threw it. And it bounced – boom, boom – and it sat there, and then it went BANG! Real loud explosion, the biggest one we’d made. It showered us with dirt, and we were all laughing, and the neighbours came out. An old lady said, “It shook the foundations of my chook shed!” And we’re like “It works!” And then the cops turned up. We heard it. The car screeched up, the doors go, a cop pulls out, and we recognized him – he went to our high school, he was one of my Dad’s Scouts from his Scout trips – obviously he was in his twenties now. Darren, his name was. And he gets out, and it was the easiest case he’d ever solved. He looked at the bomb, then he looked at our house, and he was like “Oh yeah, case solved.” And then Dad had rocked up. Dad thought Darren had just dropped in to see his former Scout leader, and Dad goes up to him and goes, “G’day Darren, how are you?” And Darren goes, “Ah, this is no social visit Kevin. Do you recognize these containers?” “Yeah, they are my sons’, sitting in the garage.” And we were like, “Oh no…” So we went to the police station. And the bomb expert from India was on the site, and he couldn’t work out what was in the bombs. And he said, “What’s in the bombs?” “Chlorine and brake fluid.” And he’s like “How’d you know how to do that?” And we went, “Brian told me.” “RIGHT, WHO’S BRIAN?!” So we sang: “Brian told me, Brian told me, Brian told me so”. I love that story. Elizabeth: Such a great tune, isn’t it. Dave: Yeah, it’s a great tune, and they used it in Sydney too, you know. Brian Henderson. Value for money. That’s in the book – lots of detail about the 70s and 80s in The Summer of ’82. Elizabeth: See, that crime history continued because being from a family of four boys … your brother Mark captured my attention. Dave:  Yeah Mark’s quite a character in the book. That’s what my mum said the other day: “You were the worst, and now you’re the best.” He’s very good with Mum and Dad. Elizabeth:  He was a slow starter. Dave: He was a slow starter, classic middle child out of four boys, and he was very naughty. Got in trouble a lot with the police and he got kicked out of school for setting fire to the chemistry lab. He was meant to be getting changed for Oklahoma I think it was, and he set fire to the lab, and got kicked out. Elizabeth: See, I’d actually like to read this – I know you don’t like to, but I do. Dave:  Go on. Elizabeth: Page 88 – you write: “We’re talking about a kid who’s kicked out of school for setting fire to the chemistry lab while he was meant to be getting changed for his part in the school musical. Hmm, there’s young Mark in the lab where he’s supposed to be putting on his farmer’s overalls to sing in Oklahoma. Wait! The chemicals are too tempting, so it’s time for a quick experiment. Va-voom! Up in flames the lab goes.” See, I have a brother who is an illustrator. His name is Bernie Harris, and he’s going to illustrate my second children’s book which will be out next year. But he’s similar to Mark in that he used to enjoy lighting the Bunsen burners in the chemistry lab. Dave:  Ah yeah, they’ve still got Bunsen burners too. Yeah, Mark was very naughty. Elizabeth: So the difference between our brothers was that he wasn’t caught. Dave:  Yeah, right, Mark was caught. Elizabeth: But you had your own way of managing Mark when your parents were away. Do you call it “MYOB Night” or “M.Y.O.B. Night”? Dave: Oh. Make-Your-Own? Make-Your-Own. Elizabeth: You were very inventive Dave, and strategic in managing your brother. Dave: Yeah, he was put in charge of us when Mum and Dad went on holidays, and at that stage he was an apprentice at Telstra. And so he would invite his mates over for a card night. And I was working in a factory and I had to get up early. And he was like … Elizabeth: You get Endangerment, don’t you? Dave: Yeah, I was working in a factory and you look at the pay packet and we got Heat Allowance and Dust Allowance. It wasn’t a great job but it was certainly a wakeup call. If I’d done the job at the start of Year 12, I probably would have studied more, I think. Should have done that. But Mark … Elizabeth: There was something about connectors and fuses, I think. Dave: Ah yeah. He invited his mates over for cards and they were having this big party, and I pulled the fuse out of the fuse box, threw it out on the lawn, and went back to bed. And the music went (mimics sound of music dying out suddenly)… And he blamed the neighbor of course. So I think when he read the book, he found out it was me. Elizabeth: It was brilliant. So that job, crawling through those … crawling through those tunnels. And the hot dog … Dave: Hot dog shop. Elizabeth: With Cindy. Dave: With Cindy. So I got a job in a hot dog shop: Alecto Hot Dogs on Toorak Road. People from Melbourne may remember. Elizabeth: Sorry I don’t remember. Dave: You don’t remember Alecto Hot Dogs ’92? Yum. So I worked at Alecto Hot Dogs with a girl named Cindy, whom I eventually went out with. She was dressed up like Boy George or Hazie Fantazie and she had all these outrageous outfits. Turned out she was from Mitcham where I lived; I’d just never met her. She was a Catholic and I was Protestant. Different sides of the railway track. So that was very exciting. But I eventually got sacked from the hot dog shop because the owner accused me of stealing the rolls and selling them to an opposition shop, when in fact I was just eating them. Elizabeth: Was there proof of that? Dave: Yeah, I was eating them. But then my twin brother was also working there – I have a twin – and he got a full-time job so I just took his job, the part-time job, and kept turning up as him. Elizabeth: Are you identical? Dave: Yeah. And they’d say “Didn’t I sack you?” And I’d say “No, that’s my brother.” He’d probably be 20 kilos lighter than me now. He lives in Switzerland; he works for Red Cross. He’s the good twin; I’m the bad twin. He’s doing good stuff. Elizabeth: The ability to make people laugh is such a gift, and not everybody can do it. Dave: Not everybody can do it. It takes practice. Eizabeth: So tell me about that. Dave: Making people laugh? When I was at school, I was pretty funny, and when I was at uni and stuff, a few girls said “You should be a stand-up comedian – you’re quite funny.” Now when you’re in your twenties and girls say that, that’s a call actually. Elizabeth: Means something, doesn’t it. Dave: Yeah it’s a call actually. You should do it. And so I always wanted to do it; I didn’t know it was a job. I had no idea, especially in the 70s – comedy wasn’t prevalent, it was fringe. There are a few comedy clubs that have started, but maybe one work function with comedians. We’ve seen comedians on Scout camps; we used to have comedians turn up to do gigs on Scout camps. So it was definitely something I wanted to do; I just didn’t know how to do it. I thought it was something too out of my reach, but turned out anyone could do it, if you wanted. Elizabeth: For those that want to launch their comedic careers, is it really the hard slog of gigs and being heckled? And if so, what’s the best way of dealing with the heckling? Dave: Well I don’t get heckled much anymore, but certainly when you start out, and you’ve got to do a lot of bad gigs – they call them “Open Mic Nights “. Anyone can get up and do it – and if you have an inkling, there’s plenty of them around now, more so than when I started. I would advise people to go and have a look first, and then approach the person running the night and ask to go on the next week and just jump up – write some stuff down and jump up and do it. The hecklers? Best thing to do with hecklers: repeat what they say. So they say: “You’re a fat idiot.” And you say “What did you say, mate? I’m a fat idiot?” Which lets everyone in the room hear what they say. Because a lot of hecklers do it so no one else can hear what they say, especially in a big room. “You’re a blah-blah.” “Oh really, mate.” And so you repeat what they say, and then you think of something really quick to say back. It doesn’t even have to be that funny; it just has to be quick. I can’t think of any Elizabeth: On the front cover of this great book, you are pictured wearing a Devo Energy Dome, Dave. Can you explain the impact it had in your life, and what the proclamation “Are We Not Men?” means? Dave: “We are Devo”. I don’t know what it means – just something they say in one of their songs – album name. Elizabeth:What it means more so on the train? Dave: Oh on the train! We went and saw Devo. They had a 9-day tour; they had a few No. 1 hits in Australia. Elizabeth: What were they? Dave:  “Whip It”. “Girl U Want”. Elizabeth: You’re not going to sing to me. Dave:  No. “Whip It cracked that whip…one sat on the greenhouse tree…” Elizabeth: Did you bring your guitar? Dave: No. I play the bass. Anyway, so we went and watched Devo. It was a great night and we were all dressed up in our best; we were slightly alternative kids. Elizabeth: Does that mean you used to wear makeup? Dave: No, I didn’t wear makeup, but I had makeup on that night because I’d been rehearsing for The Game Show, which is a TV show. They’re really cool people…and so we dressed up in our best trendy gear: nice jeans and lemon vintage jumpers. Elizabeth: Lemon. Dave: Lemon vintage; might have had a pink one if someone was in a brave mood. Then we had these homemade Devo hats, these red flower pots Mum had made. Elizabeth: Joyce made them! Dave:  Joyce made them. Crafty. And so we were on the train. We were on a high, singing these Devo songs. Unfortunately for us, The Angels and Rose Tattoo were playing the Myer Music Bowl that night, and all their fans had gone on to Richmond, so this was a classic case of “last train out”. Elizabeth: For those that weren’t kids in the 80s, tell me about The Angels and Rose Tattoo and Henry Anderson. Dave: Yeah, bald-headed guy, tattoos. They’re basically hard rock; they’re a great band. They have fans who are hardcore bogans, so guys from the outer suburbs in mullets, stretch jeans, moccasins – tough guys. Elizabeth: What sort of suburb are we talking about? Dave:  We’re talking about Moroolbark, Lilydale, Ringwood. I grew up in Mitcham – there are plenty of them in Mitcham, so they would get on the train and they would look at us and be like, “What the … who are these guys?” And so we were like their enemy. And so one of them came over and he didn’t know where to start, so he started at the shoes. “Where did you get your shoes from?” And I’m like “The shoe shop.” And he’s like “No, you got them from the op shop.” Like that was an insult. I wanted to ask “Where did you get your language from? Your nan’s wardrobe?” But I didn’t say that. I was hoping my Energy Dome would transform itself and he would get picked up and thrown out of the window. Elizabeth: But it didn’t work. Dave:  It didn’t work. And he’s like “Do you have makeup on?” And I went “Why would I have makeup on?” I did have makeup on. So I had come from The Game Show rehearsal and I did have foundation and lipstick on, and I had forgotten to take it off. And he goes “I’m going to bash you!” And at that point in the book – when I do it live, it’s different – … came through the carriage. He was the tough guy from high school – he’s now a lawyer – and he came through the carriage, and he was a big Greek guy, and he was a big Devo fan so we got on very well. And he was like “What are you…?” and he pushes this guy aside – “What are you doing to him?” And then these guys “Yeah, nah, nah…” and then we pull up at the station. They pull the door open and he fell out on the wrong side of the track - the tough guy. Classic tough guy move – they pull the door when they’re not meant to, and then jump out. He jumped out on the wrong side of the tracks and fell on the tracks so all his mates laughed: “Yer, Gary!” Elizabeth: Oh, his name was Gary. Dave:  Yeah, Gary, classic name. And then everyone was like “Are we not men?” And then we were like “Yeah, we are Devo!” and we were chanting on the train. Good times. Elizabeth: Well, the whole book’s great, cause I’ve read it cover to cover. Dave:  Oh, good on you. You’re the only one. Elizabeth: No, I’m sure many, many people will be reading it, especially after our podcast goes live. Dave: Cool. Elizabeth: No, truly. What’s your next project, Dave? Dave:  I’ve written a TV show that I’m going to film soon. I’m just doing a pilot though; it’s based on my life as a stand-up and dad, so we’re going to film it soon, in December. Elizabeth: Can you talk about the people involved in it? Dave:  Oh yes of course, it’s based on my life as a comic, so I play myself. Glenn Robbins is in the first episode - he plays himself, because I’m always trying to get him to do charity gigs. He plays himself. Brendan Fevola - he plays himself. Well, it’s all based on an incident where I did a football club gig 15 years ago, where I insulted … I didn’t know Lance Whitnall - Carlton legend – came from that club – that was his original … and his mum was there when I made it. So I’m using Brendan Fevola in this. I’m too scared to ring Lance Whitnall, let’s be honest. So I know Brendan Fevola and I rang him, and he’s like “Yeah, yeah, no worries!” So that’s going to be out next year. I’m also working on a comic novel – I’ve written a chapter of a comic novel. I had no plans to do it at all, but I got this idea, so I started writing it, and I think it’s pretty funny. Elizabeth:  Of course it’s funny – it’s you. What else would it be? Dave:  And again it’s a satire based on the entertainment industry. Elizabeth:  That would be interesting, and funny. Dave:  I’ve got to change everyone’s name. Elizabeth: Are these people going to be recognizable? Dave:  Yes. Elizabeth: Of course they are. (Laughter) Dave:   There’s an amalgamation of people in there – part me, and other people, you know. Elizabeth:  Composite characters. Dave: Composite characters, so you don’t get sued. Elizabeth: So do you have a website or blog where my listeners can find out more about your work? Dave: Yes. Just go to my Facebook page. I update my Facebook page a lot. It’s “Dave O’Neil”. But if you just go to my website – dave-o-neil-dot-com-dot-au - there’s a link to my Facebook page. I don’t update my website that much, but I do update Facebook a lot because it’s so easy. I’ve got a public page, like a fan page. I don’t spend any time on my personal page at all. Elizabeth: So Dave, this is a signature question I ask all my guests because of my book, Chantelle’s Wish: What do you wish for, for the world … Dave:  World peace. Elizabeth:  … and most importantly, for yourself? We’ll start with you. Dave:  For the world? Well, as Rodney King once said, why can’t we all just get along? Elizabeth: Good point. Dave: That’ll be good, if everyone got along. I don’t see wars stopping, but if we just looked after the – I saw this great documentary about astronauts, and this astronaut, when he was up in space, he looked at the earth and he said, “It’s like an oasis, and we’re killing it.” So, interesting from an astronaut, ‘cause they’re like military guys, you know what I mean? So if we could look after the planet, that would be good, but I don’t know what I can do, you know. I do the occasional benefit. Elizabeth: I was going to say you mentioned fundraising; let’s talk about that. Dave: More of my benefits are for schools - local schools and kinders, that’s what I do, just because I’m in that world. Elizabeth:  They must love that, though. That really helps them. Dave:  I do benefits, and I’ll tell you what, if the benefit’s no good, I just get up on stage and I say: ‘I’m here to support the cause. See you later!” Some of the people have benefits in bars, and people are talking and not listening, and I think, “What’s the point?” Elizabeth: Well, I’d like to invite you to help us out. Pat Guest – he’s a children’s author, and he has a son, Noah, who has Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, and we are creating an event where Rosalie Ham, author of The Dressmaker, will be there. Dave:  Oh wow. Elizabeth: She’s got a book out called There Should Be More Dancing. Aric Yegudkin and his wife Masha will be dancing, so he would like to do a bit of … Dave:  Sure. Elizabeth:  And all the donations will go to Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy to help those kids, because unfortunately that is terminal. Dave: Alright. Elizabeth: And I’ve nursed a couple of those children, so it’s … Dave: Full on. Elizabeth: It is full on. Dave: Yeah, I can help with that. Elizabeth: Thank you. So thank you Dave O’Neil. Dave:  Thank you for having me. Elizabeth:  It’s been an absolute delight. Dave O’Neil, thank you very much for guesting on Writers’ Tête-à-Tête with Elizabeth Harris. Dave:  Thank you. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

If we fully understood the scope of God's forgiveness, we would be more grateful and more gracious. That has been my personal challenge this week as I used Shane & Shane's song, "That's How You Forgive," to explore just HOW God forgives. Join me on this very powerful journey to explore the depths of God's forgiveness and what it means to and for us. On this episode I discuss: God's standard of forgiveness (see Episode 129 for an introduction to this) How the opening verse of "That's How You Forgive" by Shane & Shane come from Psalm 103 - Psalm 103:8 The difference between a standard and a list of rules The A.C.T.S. model for prayer Adoration - Psalm 103:1-2 Confession Thanksgiving Supplication The Hebrew word for "benefits" in Psalm 103:2 can be translated "dealing" - BibleHub.com Part one of understanding how God forgives is to explore how He deals with us A list of examples of how God "deals" with us in Psalm 103:3-10 Part two of understanding how God forgives is consider WHY He forgives the way He does - Psalm 103:11-16 Part three of understanding how God forgives is to consider the SCOPE of His forgiveness - Psalm 103:12 Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - our Bible Interaction Tool Exercises this week are: Pray! Make a list Pray Scripture Determining if we are meeting God's standard of forgiveness in our dealings with others - Colossians 3:13 How God purifies us in the forgiveness process and how it relates to the refining process discussed in Episode 126 - 1 John 1:9 Ending our prayers with another dose of adoration   Additional Resources Lyrics Story behind the song "That's How You Forgive" by Shane & Shane - New Release Today Story behind the song "That's How You Forgive" by Shane & Shane - YouTube Video This Week's Challenge Read Psalm 103 for yourself! Think about the parts of forgiveness we discussed today. Consider how God deals with us and make a list of examples given in this Psalm. Consider why He deals with us in this manner. Consider the scope of His forgiveness. Don't forget to pray! Use your list to rehearse God's greatness. If, like me, this study leads you to understand that you need to make some changes in order to meet God's standard of forgiveness, confess your unforgiveness and ask for help.
