Our podcast network, The Curiosity Department, has a new show called Reconsidering. Though design and your work are a big part of who you are, you are so much more. Reconsidering is a show hosted by designers that aims to bring fresh eyes to the important things in life. Co-hosts Meredith Black, formerly at Pinterest and Figma, Bob Baxley, formerly at Apple and Thoughtspot, and Aarron Walter explore topics like how to build a fulfilling career, navigate big life changes like illness and death, and we talk with experts about the skills you need to cultivate to become the healthy, well adjusted adult we all want to be. You can learn more about Reconsidering and subscribe to the show at Reconsidering.org. But to give you a taste, we're sharing an episode here. Bob, Meredith, and Aarron talked to Brad Stuhlberg, who writes about excellence, resilience, performance, and well-being. His latest book, Mastering Change, is a New York Times best-seller and a great read as we enter the new year with big goals for ourselves. Brad's in depth research and lucid guidance made an impression on us, and we know it will do the same for you. --- Like it or not, change is inevitable. Your career, relationships, body, health, mood are all in constant motion. We can fight it but it's unproductive and leads to suffering. Our pal Brad Stulberg is back on the show to help us look at change differently. His new book Master of Change: How To Excel When Everything Is Changing - Including You is full of deeply researched wisdom from science and philosophy that will help you become more resilient and adaptable. About Brad Stulberg Brad Stulberg researches, writes, and coaches on health, well-being, and sustainable excellence. He is the bestselling author of The Practice of Groundedness and co-author of Peak Performance. Stulberg regularly contributes to the New York Times, and his work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, Outside Magazine, Forbes, and other outlets. He also serves as the co-host of The Growth Equation podcast and is on faculty at the University of Michigan's Graduate School of Public Health. In his coaching practice, he works with executives, entrepreneurs, physicians, and athletes on their mental skills and overall well-being. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina.
Brad Stulberg, author of Master Of Change: How To Excel When Everything Is Changing — Including You shares his observations of humanity, resourcefulness, and community after his hometown of Asheville, North Carolina was hit by Hurricane Helene. The devastating storm left residents without power, water, and communications for days on end. In the aftermath of the storm, neighbors sprang into action by sharing, gathering, and helping each other wherever they could. Stulberg shares this anecdote about observing his community: “People came together like I had never seen before. And for those that aren't familiar with western North Carolina, Asheville is a very blue political place, but the surrounding areas are quite red… All of that just completely went away, it was just pure connection on a human level.” Stulberg likens this experience of hope and resilience to the concept of "tragic optimism," as described by Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl’s book Man's Search for Meaning. Frankl argues that even in the face of pain and despair, we can choose to remain hopeful and optimistic. “We need to be able to look these tragedies in the eye,” Stulberg explains, “expect that they're going to happen and at the same time be optimistic – trudge forward with a hopeful attitude. And Frankel would argue, not in spite of those tragedies, but actually because of them. There's so much in life that is hard, what is going to sustain us through the hard times is also embracing the beautiful when it's there and holding on to it.” All proceeds from the sale of Brad Stulberg’s book, Master Of Change: How To Excel When Everything Is Changing — Including You, through the end of the year will go towards relief funds helping those impacted by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. Stulberg, who frequently writes and speaks about mental health and human potential, also addresses his concerns about a current (and well-documented) crisis of masculinity. He does this by sharing some of the latest data on mental health and friendships. “Men are four times as likely than women to die by suicide, right now,” Stulberg tells us. “Nearly half of male teens say that they've never dated — almost double the rate of previous generations. 30 years ago, a majority of young men said that they had over six good friends. Today, the majority of young men say they have only three friends and 15% of young men report having no close friends.” While there is no single cause for “the increase in loneliness and the male loss of status or feeling like you don't matter,” Stulberg highlights one observation he’s made, and that’s the change in youth sports. Once a community-driven, recreational outlet, “youth sports [have] become increasingly professionalized now. In many areas, you have to pay to play, it's all about travel teams. So these outlets that men used to have to feel really good about themselves are harder to access for a lot of folks.” Delve deeper into life, philosophy, and what makes us human by joining the Life Examined discussion group on Facebook.

Dr. Adam Stulberg provides his analysis of the situation in Ukraine which has become a war of attrition characterized by constant surprise for all participants. The Russian military is learning from its mistakes. He discusses and quantifies the use of red lines by Russia, how they can be interpreted as hollow threats, but how they can also be understood as a different and opaque approach by Moscow to competitive bargaining which blurs lines between peace and war and increases uncertainty, which is doubly dangerous. The Russians see sanctions as part of a new definition of war (e.g. information, energy diplomacy, hybrid, next generation) and thus far have solidly absorbed the shocks. Energy is becoming less and less a potent instrument of political and strategic influence. Domestic politics is going to be playing a bigger role in the war going forward given the elections taking place in many countries. Howie Stulberg worked for Buddy Rich as his roadie/assistant when he was 21 years old in 1978 and had the time of his life for 2 years. He shares great stories of how some days he and Buddy would be drinking malts and going to baseball games, but and other days if you caught Buddy in the wrong mood - he would give you a piece of his mind and fire you on the spot. Howie discusses a day in the life with Buddy, Performing on Johnny Carson, and the famous Buddy Rich Rant tapes (which Howie was present for the recording). Howie was Buddy Rich's right hand man and would carry everything for him so all Buddy had to worry about was being the worlds best drummer. This episode is done with 100% respect for Buddy and I hope everyone enjoys it! Thank you to Dr. Matt Brennan for sponsoring this episode with his great book "Kick It: A Social History of the Drum Kit". Musician Woody Stulberg looks forward to wearing his Halloween costume to Cabarave: MadHaus III this weekend. He says the event by RatHaus Productions as an “immersive nightclub experience with a theater twist.” Pop-up live performances include aerial silks, fire dancing, live music and performance painting, which take place around — and above — the audience. Stulberg describes the atmosphere as “sensual” but also welcoming to all. Halloween costumes and audience participation are encouraged. The shows take place this Friday and Saturday evening at Brother Justus Whiskey Company in Minneapolis. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the shows start at 8 p.m. Greg Krausert of Austin, Minn. is also planning on wearing a Halloween costume this Saturday night when he attends a cabaret performance at the Austin Country Club by local drag performer Roxie Manacoochi. Backed by a DJ, Manacoochi sings a range of styles from Cole Porter to Madonna to contemporary fare. She was named first runner up to Miss Gay Iowa USofA and is preparing to compete again this January. “It's unbelievable fun,” says Krausert of the show, recalling Manacoochi's September performance, which kept the audience laughing and singing far beyond the scheduled run time. Saturday's cabaret show starts at 7:30 p.m. Twin Cities filmmaker Peter Groynom is looking forward to attending the Twin Cities Film Fest, which continues with a full lineup of showings tonight, Friday and Saturday. The films play at the ShowPlace ICON Theatre in St Louis Park, and Groynom says this centralized location makes it easy to see multiple shows and also have a chance to connect with other filmmakers and enthusiasts. The year's festival has drawn about 70 films by local, national and international filmmakers. The films are also accessible to stream through the festival website. Groynom appreciates how the festival spotlights diverse programming. On his watch list: a series of dramatic shorts called “American Tales” Friday at 2:30; a block of comedic shorts called “The Joke's on Us” Saturday at 12:30 — both with filmmaker Q&As afterward; and a Saturday afternoon documentary, “Jimmy in Saigon,” which explores the life, romance and death of a queer veteran in Vietnam. Hometown Radio 09/14/22 5p: Hometown Attorney Jeff Stulberg discusses current cases
Successful companies are made up of more than just their products; it's their people, too. At Trillium Flow Technologies, the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion cannot be understated. Reflecting on the value and importance of these core beliefs, Michelle Dawn Mooney hosts a conversation with Trillium's Vice President of Human Resources, Jessica Stulberg. Even after only a year with Trillium, Stulberg recognized the human capital aspect of business and its important role in the company's overall success. “We partner with the business, the function partners with the business to see how we can drive success in our strategies through people in the organization,” said Stulberg. Making diversity, equity, and inclusion a part of Trillium's core beliefs ensures employee's needs are being recognized, heard, and met; it also positively impacts the communities and suppliers of the business. Stulberg said, “We know that we get better business outcomes when we have diversity of thought, diversity of experiences, and diversity of culture in our organization.” To help promote these values, Trillium reached out to the heart of the business: people. Stulberg noted, “We created a diversity and inclusion committee that's comprised of employees and leaders across the organization so they can share their ideas and make impactful changes in our organization.” The committee has created a Diversity and Inclusion charter through Trillium's policy statement, developed key initiatives focused on the recruitment of females in STEM and leadership, generated core and basic KPI's in each operating country, and added basic training on unconscious bias. Among initiative successes, from 2020 to 2021, Trillium increased the total number of females in the organization by almost 30%, and Trillium's year-over-year recruitment of women in STEM positions has increased by over 20%.
Edward Fishman presents his insights on how sanctions became the preferred U.S. policy response to Russian aggression in 2014 and 2022, followed by Adam Stulberg's discussion of the theoretical considerations that factor into the sanctions-related policy calculus. Edward Fishman is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, and an Adjunct Professor of International and Public of Affairs at Columbia University. Adam Stulberg is a Professor and Co-Director of the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy (CISTP) in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs.
Many of us believe that in order to get something done, we need to be motivated first. But according to Brad Stulberg, an expert in human behavior, motivation follows action. Not the other way around. You don't need to feel good to get going; you need to get going to give yourself a chance at feeling good.
