We're discussing a lot of box office misses this month for our theme of AWKWARD LAUGHTER 2: THE FLOP but our unofficial mascot for Awkward Laughter is the one and only Jerry Lewis who made a lot of money in movies for a long time. We're examining a smidgen of Mr. Lewis's nutty career in three movies this month and we've hit the final of that trilogy in the zany 1964 comedy “The Disorderly Orderly” directed by Frank Tashlin and starring the ultimate chaos god, Jerry Lewis. Classic vaudeville slapstick and Looney Tunes (some of which also directed by Tashlin) paved the way to Jerry Lewis and this film embodies those roots more than any Lewis feature we've discussed so far. Jerome Littlefield has a condition that makes working at a hospital the worst idea but we know what he's really there for. He's God's punishment sent down to destroy the greedy hospital owner, Mr. Tuffington. Yes, Jerry Lewis is pretty much a reality warping deity of some sort who is too dumb to know that's what he is. There are plenty of “miracles” that occur in this film that back up that theory. We will never see Jerry Lewis movies the same ever again. Also starring Susan Oliver, the green lady from Star Trek who is stalked by the chaos god. This is some scary shit if you really think about it. EDIT - CORRECTION: From @daggydad on Twitter. Dr John Campbell is an a&e nurse with a PhD, not a doctor of medicine.@GasmanR went on to elaborateSmall pedantic correction, Dr John Campbell is a nurse not a doctor. He does hold a valid Phd and can use the honorific doctor - but it is in the discipline of nursing education, he is not a medical doctor. While unfortunately a small number of my fellow doctors are raving cookers (including unfortunately a guy I went to university with and with whom I also did specialist training in anaesthesia - Paul Oosterhuis) Dr Campbell is owned by our nursing brothers and sisters. His descent from reasoned provider of sound information at the start of the pandemic into full on antivax disinformation grifter is well documented on both YouTube and Twitter by Australia's own Dr Susan Oliver and US based Debunkthefunk. Thanks for everyone who wrote in to say that. We love getting corrected! -----------------------------------------------------------------It's been a bit on and off recently but we are on. A bit of a hybrid episode that took the fast and loose nature of a Black Label with a bit of script to keep it tight.Deep dives are on the horizon but the news keeps newsing and it's time to start delivering the goods. This week we look at the imminent (now very much completed) death throes of Roger Rogerson. Old mate dodged a lot of death in his time but finally it was falling over that really seemed to get him. What a bad person he was.The WEF is annoying. Not because it's a meeting of elites who go skiing and talk about making a shitload of money from us peasants - but because idiot conspiracy theorists need to make it all about them. Disease X is especially annoying and so is that dickhead from Argentina. And Elon Musk. He is very, very annoying. In SovCits we look at a bleach merchant from NZ who gets his comeuppance and Pete is still posting. Dunno why. Nobody except for us seem to care.Enjoy!
Don't miss an Author's Afternoon with Tom Lisanti in The Locher Room. Tom stopped by to talk about his new book, Ryan's Hope: An Oral History of Daytime's Groundbreaking Soap. The book is out now and is a definitive look at the popular serial from the people who made it so beloved and how it made its way into millions of households through a combination of compelling storylines, incredible publicity, a slew of younger viewers who became loyal fans, and daytime star power that made it so innovative during the Golden Age of Daytime Soap Operas.Joining Tom to discuss the book and their experience working on this beloved soap are Christopher Durham and Ilene Kristen.Tom is an award-winning author of eleven books about the ‘60's and 70's film and television. He has appeared on Turner Classic Movies co-hosting with Ben Mankiewicz a week of 1960s spring break/beach movies and he is featured in the documentary The Green Girl about actress Susan Oliver, and an upcoming documentary about novelist/screenwriter Terry Southern. He has recently written articles for Cinema of the 70s; Films of the Golden Age; Scary Monsters; and Cinema Retro magazines.

Susan is a co-founder and recently retired Chair of Scale Investors, Australia's first network of Angel Investors committed to investing in and supporting exclusively female founders. Sam and Emma break down all the big news from the past few days, from the rapidly developing situation in Ukraine, to COVID, labor, the courts, and more! Sam and Emma begin by diving into the “mother of all sanctions” bill being drafted by Sen. Menendez, from the semi-useful elements of to the GOP using them to wiggle in their Russian policy, and how to grapple with being anti-war and pro-Taiwan and Ukraine (it's not that hard). Next, they look into the judicial rejection of Alabama's redistricting, giving them two weeks to make room for a second majority Black district (despite representing over a quarter of constituents), and how cool it would be if there were a federal blueprint for what problematic gerrymandering looks like, with maybe four voting-rights-related sections before it. They wrap up the free-half with an extended discussion on the state of Omicron and the right-wing US media reaction, including Bari Weiss and Bill Maher whining about their incredible sacrifices - from washing food to watching Netflix - and the weirdness of their constant pro-Israel talking points suddenly disappearing as Israel employs the utmost policy requirements for a certain segment of their population. Ben Shapiro and Dore expand on this by reminding us that the real research was the COVID-positive friends we met (and the videos we reacted to) along the way, and Sam and Emma dive into the horrors of long-COVID in the countries with the best healthcare infrastructure. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Nomiki Konst, as they debate who's more lost, Donald Trump trying to talk history, or Don Jr. trying to talk… at all. They also cover the Right's new propaganda series, made to make sure white kids never feel like their ancestors made mistakes, the differences between the non-delegation and Chevron doctrines, and Sarah Palin gets some Wattered down questioning about her COVID status as she traipses around NYC. Tucker and Sen Ron Johnson discuss those fools having conversations about COVID from their ivory towers (Note: Fox News' building is NOT ivory), plus, your calls and IMs! In our eighth episode, we learn about the Child Welfare Nursing program through a conversation with registered nurses and foster and adoptive mothers, Susan Oliver and Shelly Lee. This program supports child welfare workers by giving insight into complex medical conditions throughout the investigatory process to help staff make the best safety decisions possible. Nurses also support both biological and foster families with training and education related to the medical needs of children, increasing family stability and better long-term outcomes for the children involved. Susan Oliver is a Registered Nurse and mother to eight children. She has worked for OKDHS for the last eleven years, and, since the recording of this podcast, was named the Nursing Programs Administrator. While working for OKDHS, Susan worked on a collaborative project with Johns Hopkins University that integrated trauma-informed practices into outpatient medical clinics. In her spare time, Susan volunteers at Special Care, a child care program that serves children who are medically-fragile or who have disabilities. Shelly Lee is a Health Care Management Nurse III for Child Welfare Services, and assisted in developing the very program we're discussing today, which integrated Registered Nurses into Child Welfare. She was the first nurse hired as part of the program. She has been a nurse for 22 years and has six children with her husband of 21 years. Her family began fostering through a kinship placement in 2012, and quickly found that this was their calling. We hope you'll continue to join us on this podcast where we'll explore topics that affect and uplift Oklahomans. Don't forget to like this episode and subscribe, so you'll know when each new episode drops! To learn more about how you can support your community through fostering, visit OKFosters.org.

In our second episode Professor Jules Pretty and journalist Martha Dixon, take you on a journey to discover why we need to learn from our past in uncovering the global impact of migration on our people and our land. Our speakers have direct experience of migration and the impact it has had on their lives. We discuss why this is such an important issue and why we need to learn from the past to look forward. Contributors Roma Tearne (1:28) arrived on a boat from Sri Lanka more than fifty years ago. Her parents were Tamil and Sinhalese, caught in a conflict between the two ethnic groups. Roma is an award winning artist and novelist. Susan Oliver (5:08) looks at past migration through literature. This provides valuable insights into trying to understand the current impact of migration and the longer view. Ahmed Shaheed (10:37) and (16:37) is a United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, and a migrant from the Maldives forced to leave after a coup. He discusses how conflict creates more displaced people, the effects of climate change that force people to travel and why he still has hope about the future. Jonathan Lichtensein (12:04) is professor of drama at the University of Essex has recently published a book, The Berlin Shadow, about his father’s experience of escaping the Holocaust. He’s hijacked the Enterprise and is taking his former boss, Captain Pike to a forbidden planet for some unknown reason. Why is Spock defying the laws of Starfleet? Why is he seemingly betraying his captain? If you are on a board or aspiring to serve on one, you would know the name Susan Oliver. As a child, Susan was fascinated with construction sites and loved the smell of raw concrete. Her passion for the traditionally male-centric industry led her to be the first woman to graduate with a Bachelor in Building at the University of Melbourne. Her life has remained an exploration of risk-taking because being equally challenged and in awe of technology, science and big companies doing big things has not only kept her in the game, but leading the game. Since 1996, Susan has been involved in the governance of global companies such as IFM Investors, Transurban Group, and the restructure of Centro Group. Her expertise is in rebuilding stakeholder trust and finding the potential in legacy assets, all whilst mapping a path for a company to succeed into an unknown future. Before joining boards, Susan enjoyed a long career in technology and futures consulting, culminating with leading the Commission for the Future for the Australian Government. The Honourable Barry Jones who is on the National Trust's list of Australian Living Treasures, was pivotal to Susan's journey — a mentor, inspiration and friend. Close to Susan's heart is a range of not-for-profit causes. She currently sits on the board of Melbourne Theatre Company, The Wheeler Centre and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, and previously was governor and on the national board for The Smith Family. She helped to found The Big Issue in Australia, a fortnightly, independent magazine that is sold on the streets by homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people, and co-founded Scale Investors to fund female led start-ups. Hear from Susan why big companies need to stop reacting and start strategically and intelligently preparing for the dynamic world we live in. Susan's current board roles include: Independent Member of Global Investment Committee for IFM Investors Advisory Board, Fishermans Bend Chair, The Wheeler Centre Founding Chair, Scale Investors Director, Melbourne Theatre Company Director, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra Judge, Entrepreneur of the Year LinkedIn Susan Oliver Claire Braund (host) Further Information about Women on Boards (WOB) WOB membership, events & services, please visit our website. A little country kid ushers in the Davis Cup. It's the summer of 1966 and Susan Oliver is just like many kids from all over Australia in that she loves tennis. She doesn't just love playing the game with her sister and father but loves the players she reads about in the papers and hears on the radio. So when the Davis Cup final comes to Melbourne, Susan wants to be right there, even though Kooyong is a good 60 miles from her home in Warragul. Despite the distance, Susan got her chance as an usherette showing fans to their seats, a dream come true to be involved. Ironically, Susan's uniform from that time has gone on display just as the Davis Cup as we know it is no longer. In episode four of Object of the Game, we look back on a time when Australia was the best tennis nation in the world, and the summer when one little country kid got to meet her heroes. The article mentioned in the episode is "Australia wins an Indian war" written by Kim Chapin and published in the January 9, 1967 edition of Sports Illustrated magazine. You can find the text only version here. Archive audio of the 1965 Wimbledon Final between Roy Emerson and Fred Stolle courtesy of British Pathé. Find the whole video here. The night was an overwhelming success and the crowd was amazing. Tune in to hear some of the night's excitement and we hope to see you all there next year.
Orions on Enterprise. They're seductive. They're big. They're green. And, according to The Animated Series, they're politically neutral. They are, of course, the Orions! One of the most famous aliens in Star Trek thanks to Susan Oliver's portrayal of a slave girl in "The Cage," the Orions are mentioned throughout Star Trek but rarely seen. That all changed when the fourth season of Enterprise rolled around and the NX-01 crew found themselves up for auction in an Orion slave market on Verex III. In "Borderland" we got our first glimpse of the Orions in many years, and saw male Orions for the very first time. Then in "Bound" the writers turned all of our notions about these aliens on their head. In the episode of Warp Five we're joined by Sebastian Prooth to discuss the background of the Orions on The Original Series and The Animated Series, their introduction to Enterprise, the role of the Orion slave girl in geek fantasy, and how Enterprise took this iconic element of geekdom and added depth and intrigue where we didn't expect it. One of the most famous aliens in Star Trek is the Orion slave girl, and the most classic “green” moment comes from “The Cage,” compliments of Susan Oliver. The prolific star is best known to Star Trek fans for this role, yet her appearance in Star Trek is but a speck on the landscape of her career as an actress and director. In this episode of The Ready Room we take a break from our usual format as we're joined by Larry Nemecek and writer/director George Pappy to talk about his new documentary The Green Girl, which chronicles the life of Susan Oliver, her film and television work, attempts to break the glass ceiling for female directors, and more.
