The Cloud Minders (Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), S3 E19) was recommended by Kaleb, he/him, who said: No war but class war baby! I love this episode for being that classic campy trek, while also being a rather good simplification of how environment- particularly an environment caused by oppression in the first place- shapes the way that oppression is justified and continued. Not specifically class related, but that's the medium this episode evokes, and many marginalized identities can be viewed through class structures as well.I can't deny a good “I won't be the bigger man, I'm dragging you down to my level” type story, especially when it's our protagonist doing the dragging.I can't help but love Droxine flirting w/ Spock, bc it just registers to me as the relatable experience of “ma'am please, I'm here w/ my boyfriend, who you clearly haven't clocked as such, so I'm gonna try and find the most non-scene causing way to stop this”. It kills me, I don't think this scene is supposed to reduce you to giggles.Hope you also enjoy! The Cloud Minders first aired on February 28, 1969, written by Jerome Bixby, and directed by Murray GoldenKirk races against time to acquire plague-fighting minerals from a world in the midst of a civil uprising. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

When Captain Kirk and his landing party respond to a distress call from an alien race called the Kelvans, they have the tables turned on them when they are immediately captured and held as hostages. The reason: high radiation levels in their own galaxy will eventually make life there impossible, so the Kelvans need the Enterprise to make the 300-year return journey back to their home world to deliver the message about this new galaxy that their race can conquer and occupy. Since the Kelvans have taken on human form, Captain Kirk's only hope in defeating them lies in engaging them on a human level and stirring up their newfound emotions, reactions and temptations. Written by D.C. Fontana and Jerome Bixby, "By Any Other Name" packs a lot into its 50-minute running time and really does have it all: action, suspense, drama, conflict, romance and -- in an abrupt and remarkably effective shift in tone -- humor (and lots of it). The result is an engaging, briskly-paced and very entertaining "Star Trek" classic that fully deserves to rank up there with the very best of them. Special guest: Mark A. Odds and Ends: Another throwback episode, featuring T.J.'s dogs, Nick filtered through T.J.'s stream-sniping, air traffic controller Travis, and a much more awkward, stilted but not structured show! In the pre (not post!) chat, we cover some of last year's Oscar nominees, like Judas and the Black Messiah and Sound of Metal. Discussing the ethics of pirating movies made by shitty douchebags. Feature Film: We're talking the ultra low-budget low-key sci-fi talky movie “The Man from Earth,” written by classic sci-fi icon Jerome Bixby. A simple bottle movie about a guy telling his friends he's a multi-millenia old being, which they react to by… talking about it, for the whole thing. Venturing into many different philosophical alleyways and theoretical roundabouts, it's a simple but heady trip into a world of what ifs, some… more ridiculous than others. Though if everyone had thought ahead and used their Jump to Conclusions mats, they could've avoided all this nonsense. Requiem for Methuselah was the nineteenth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with a planet's sole inhabitant inhibiting an operation to retrieve chemicals required to end a deadly epidemic. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss whether Kirk has his priorities straight, given the circumstances. Seeking a supply of ryetalin to synthesise a cure for an epidemic that threatens to engulf the Enterprise, Kirk, McCoy and Spock visit a planet rich in the substance. There they meet Flint (James Daly) who claims to be the only person living on the planet and initially denies permission to mine the mineral they require. Later changing his mind, Flint invites the landing party into his home where Spock is surprised to see seemingly original works by some of Earth's greatest artists and musicians, but produced contemporaniously. Learning Flint is thousands of years old, the matter becomes complicated when Kirk finds himself irresistably drawn to Flint's android companion, Rayna (Louise Sorel). Requiem for Methuselah was directed by Murray Golden, his only work for the show. The writer was Jerome Bixby, the last of his four episodes. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered Spock's incredibly specific knowledge of Earth history. Day of the Dove was the seventh episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with an alien being pushing the Enterprise into conflict with a Klingon crew for its own benefit. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the persistance of racial hatred. Drawn to the same planet by false distress calls, Kirk and his Klingon rival Kang (Michael Ansara) commence a bloody engagement under the manipulation of a sentient but non-corporeal life form. After the Klingon ship is destroyed, Kang and 37 of his crewmen - including his wife-cum-science-officer Mara (Susan Howard) - plot to take control of the Enterprise and take revenge for the 400 men whose deaths he blames on Kirk. Meanwhile, the captain and Spock race against time to find the cause of their uncharacteristic behaviour. Day of the Dove was directed by Marvin Chomsky, the second of his three episodes in the chair. The writer was Jerome Bixby, the third of his four for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether the swirly light alien in this one was related to the swirly light alien in Metamorphosis. By Any Other Name was the twenty second episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with intergalactic aliens determined to travel home by hijacking the Enterprise. In this episode Gerry and Iain discussed long journeys and the need to have a few good podcasts queued up in advance. Visiting a planet believed to be uninhabited, Kirk and Spock are captured by a handful of aliens from the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy and made to watch a redshirt Yeoman (Julie Cobb) be reduced to dust on the orders of Rojan (Warren Stevens). Realising the hijackers are struggling to come to terms with their new human forms, Kirk and the senior staff set out to stimulate their senses, with the captain's duty compelling him to seduce Kelinda (Barbara Bouchet) as Scotty tries to drink Tomar (Robert Fortier) under the table and McCoy regularly injects Hanar (Stewart Moss) with an irritant. By Any Other Name was directed by Marc Daniels, his twelfth of fourteen Star Trek episodes. The writer was Jerome Bixby, with this the second of four episodes he wrote for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether a many-tentacled being could be attractive in the right package. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. Welcome to Watchers of Tomorrow! A podcast where we go through the world of science fiction television episode by episode, talking about the themes, concepts, ideas, the good, the bad, and the weird. We are great fans of sci-fi and would like to invite you on our journey through the funky and strange worlds that we are to explore… Today’s episode: Wait a tick, this episode wasn't written by Jerome Bixby, but yet... it seems a little bit like The Fantastic Voyage. Mirror, Mirror was the fourth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with several key crewmen transported to a parallel universe. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the multiverse theory and some interesting facial hair. When an ion storm combines with a transporter malfunction to switch Kirk, McCoy, Uhura and Scotty with their less civilised parallel universe counterparts, they must act quickly to return to their own Enterprise while they still can. Kirk has more than his own men to think of though, with the fate of a peaceful alien race under threat and his counterpart's lover Marlena (Barbara Luna) at risk too. Mirror, Mirror was directed by Marc Daniels, the eighth of his fourteen Star Trek episodes. The writer was Jerome Bixby, who would go on to write three more episodes for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether bare midriffs and goatees are signs of true evil. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Mirror, Mirror was released in 1967. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.
Aktuális adásunk témája ’A vágyak csapdája’ című epizód. Rövid hírszekció: • Chen Wang rajongó a Lego Digital Designerben hozza létre a TNG ikonikus jeleneteit, méghozzá minden epizódhoz. • Szokatlan kontinuitás az eredeti sorozatban: Kirk az „Ahová ember még nem merészkedett” (Where No Man Has Gone Before, TOS 1x03) és a „Háborús játékok” (A Taste of Armageddon, TOS 1x23) című epizódokra is visszautal. • Az epizód alaptémája Gene Roddenberry egyik korábbi munkájából is táplálkozik: a Chevron Hall of Stars sci-fi antológia sorozat ‘The Secret Weapon of 117’ című epizódjában két idegent láthatunk, akik emberi alakban figyelték az embereket, végül annyira lenyűgözte őket a sok érzéki tapasztalat, hogy emberek szerettek volna maradni.

Kevesebb egyenruhában érkezik vissza a leszállócsapat az Enterprise fedélzetére, mint amennyit a felszínen zajló tárgyalásokon viseltek, ráadásul a nehézkes transzportálás után a csapat megdöbbenve szembesül Spock szakállával: a felszínen tomboló ionvihar miatt az univerzumban látszólag minden a feje tetejére állt, hiszen még a számítógép is férfihangon szólal meg. Aktuális adásunkban a ’Tükröm, tükröm’ című epizódról beszélgetünk. • Végre megtekinthető a What We Left Behind: sokáig tartott a remaster, az élmény viszont minden várakozást feledtet. • Milyen események vezethettek a tüköruniverzum kialakulásához? • A szakállas Spock tényleg átformálhatja a tüköruniverzumot? A Deep Space Nine kapcsolódó epizódjaiban rálátást kapunk a terránok jövőbeli sorsára. • Dave egy 1975-ös novellát olvasott, amely a 'Mirror, Mirror' egyfajta meta-feldolgozása: a cselekmény kezdetén a Star Trek színészei a forgatásról az igazi Enterprise fedélzetére transzportálnak.

Beyond the Cabin in the Woods goes beyond The Twilight Zone Along with Polterguest Ryan, we had a lot to say about this film – so much, we made a super-sized episode! We talk about John Landis’s involvement in the death of Vic Morrow and two child actors on the set of the film. We learn the word “Discrimiflip.” Spielberg teaches us about an overused trope. We do a great inadvertent ad for Fat Guys Burger bar (Hit us up, Fat Guys)! Episode 1 of Fantastic Transmissions is about Jerome Bixby's 1953 short story, It's A Good Life. It's A Good Life is the story of a young boy with horrific psychic powers who holds an entire town under his sway. We examine how Bixby's style complements his narrative, compare the story to its Twilight Zone adaptation, and talk about the themes of totalitarianism and narcissism. The intro music is sampled from Clyde Borly and His Percussions, off the album "Music in Five Dimensions." The rest of the musc in the podcast was created by Blue Dot Sessions. Twilight Zone: The Movie. Running Time: 50 minutes 36 seconds Star Trek and The Twilight Zone are intrinsically linked by their creative teams. Many Twilight Zone writers and actors later contributed to Star Trek, and many Star Trek personnel went on to create new incarnations of The Twilight Zone. This can be seen in the 1983 film as well. Twilight Zone: The Movie adapted three classic episodes of the original series. All three stories originated from Star Trek writers, George Clayton Johnson, Jerome Bixby, and Richard Matheson. These stories were adapted for the big screen by Matheson. In this episode of Stage Nine, John and Mike begin their "Shocktober" celebration by looking at Twilight Zone: The Movie. We discuss all four segment by directors John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and George Miller, comparing them to the original episodes. Welcome to the newest addition to the Fire and Water Podcast Network, and just in time for Star Trek's 50th Anniversary Week, too! Join Siskoid and his guests once a month for Star Trek discussion in the mold of Ryan Daly's Give Me Those Star Wars. We start with the beginning, Trek's original pilot "The Cage", and wonder what would have happened if it had gone straight to series. Where would the Enterprise be now if its captain had been Christopher Pike for a season or more? Gene Hendricks of The Hammer Podcast and Anime Freaks helps Siskoid answer that question. Thanks go to Dan G, perhaps better known as the forum denizen DancesWithWookies, has selected the 2007 minimalist sci-fi/philosophic film "The Man from Earth" for his commissioned podcast. Directed by Richard Schenkman and written by the late Jerome Bixby, it asks us to entertain the idea of a 14,000 year old paleolithic man who has managed to adapt and survive to our modern day. His winding tale through history may intrigue or infuriate you, depending on your appetite for detail or willingness to engage with the ideas and concepts of the film, and move beyond the limitations of it's budget and construction. A.Ron thinks that if you find the film intriguing, you man enjoy Christopher Moore's "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff", which is a more lighthearted, yet deeper dive into one of the film's core theories. The Twilight Zone is a television anthology series created (and often written) by its narrator and host Rod Serling. Each episode (156 in the original series) is a self-contained fantasy, science fiction, or horror/terror story, often concluding with an eerie or unexpected twist. Although advertised as science fiction, the show rarely offered scientific explanations for its fantastic happenings and often, if not always, had a moral lesson that pertained to everyday life. The program followed in the tradition of earlier well written radio programs such as The Weird Circle and X Minus One. A popular and critical success, it introduced many Americans to serious science fiction ideas through television and also through a wide variety of Twilight Zone literature. The success of this original series led to the creation of two revival series (a cult hit series that ran for several seasons on CBS and in syndication in the '80s, and a short-lived UPN series that ran early in the new millennium), a feature film, a radio series, a comic book, a magazine and various other spinoffs that would span five decades. Writers for The Twilight Zone included leading genre authorities such as Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, Jerry Sohl, George Clayton Johnson, Earl Hamner Jr., Reginald Rose and Ray Bradbury. Many episodes also featured adaptations of classic stories by such writers as Ambrose Bierce, Lewis Padgett, Jerome Bixby and Damon Knight.
