This week Seth and Bill welcome back good buddy Jon Parshall to talk about the first American carrier raids on the Japanese Home Islands since the Doolittle Raid in April 1942. In February 1945, just before Iwo Jima, Task Force 58 under the command of Marc Mitscher sails to within 60 miles of Honshu to launch the first US Navy carrier raids against Tokyo. Fighting the Japanese as well as terrible weather, the results are less than spectacular. A month later Spruance and Mitscher return, this time to Kyushu, to hit the birthing grounds of the kamikazes. In the two-day fight, American pilots ravage Japanese installations, but the fleet takes a beating in return, with 6 carriers suffering damage. Tune in to hear this oft-forgotten series of strikes in the latter stages of the war in the Pacific.
Navy FA-18 Pilots CDR Kristen Findlay and LT Mark Jbeily talk about this year's Tailhook Symposium, TOPGUN training, and changes to carrier qualification.

Welcome to the sixty-ninth episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast! I'm your host Mark Hasara, former US Air Force KC-135 pilot and author of the book Tanker Pilot, now on the Air Mobility Command Leadership Library reading list of General Mike Minihan! This past weekend I attended the Tailhook Association's 2023 convention at the Nugget Resort in Sparks, Nevada as a guest of Admiral Bill Gortney. I was asked to be part of the Operation Iraqi Freedom panel on Friday afternoon discussing the air refueling plan for the Shock and Awe campaign. This podcast episode discusses events and people I met while there. Bottom Line Up Front... this was a fantastic convention and I would admonish all of you to become members of this extraordinary organization of Naval Aviation and Aviators! This episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast is supported by the book Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit found in all four formats on Amazon: hardack, softback with black and white photos, Kindle and Audible which has an extra file download containing the thirty-two color pictures. Lessons from the Cockpit is also supported by Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. There are 133 Ready-to-Print four, six, and eight-foot-long very detailed and researched profile graphics of your favorite aircraft printed on vinyl you can peel off and stick to any flat surface. Wall Pilot's squadron and unit patches have not faded nor come off several trucks and boats, a testimony to their quality! The famous "Felix Squadron", VF-31 Tomcatters, flew combat missions over Baghdad on the opening night of Operation Iraqi Freedom's Shock and Awe air campaign. The Carrier Air Wing Fourteen Commander, Captain Kevin "KC" Albright, and his Deputy Commander Captain Scott "NOTSO" Swift had their names on this F-14D Tomcat, callsign BANDWAGON 100. This print shows the aircraft armed for the opening night mission to Baghdad carrying air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. One of the profiles I took with me to Hook 23 was the VF-31 Tomcatters flagship F-14D Tomcat, part of the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN airwing flying combat missions out of the Northern Arabian Gulf. This is Navy Commander Paul "BUTKUS" Haas the Tomcatters Skipper personal jet during Shock and Awe. My good friend Captain Stephen "Moose" Laukaitis was the Deputy Air Wing Commander of Carrier Airwing Eight during Shock and Awe. His VFA-87 WAR PARTY F-18C Hornet which flew missions during the Shock and Awe air campaign is available from Wall Pilot. Thanks for downloading and listening to this episode! I hope you enjoyed my "After Action Report" on the 2023 Tailhook Association convention. The Industry Floor was just incredible... being able to fly an F-35 simulator was a lot of fun. Welccome back to the Lessons from the Cockpit and the sixty-sixth episode of podcast! In preparation for attending the Tailhook 2023 symposium, I felt this was a good time to do an episode on the air refueling shortfalls during the Shock and Awe air campaign in March through April 2003. In my book Tanker Pilot, the chapter Six Weeks in Hell speaks to the issues the Air Refueling Control Team overcame to make the 1003 Victor war plan executable. This is a more indepth discussion on refueling shortfalls compared to what was accomplished in Desert Storm based on the Gulf War Airpower Survey written after the Desert Storm air campaign ended. The Lessons from the Cockpit show is supported and fiananced by the book Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit, found in all four formats on Amazon; hardback, softback (black and white photos!), Kindle and Audible. The Kindle and Audible versions have the thirty-two pictures in an extra file when you download the book. Detailed aircraft profiles of Operation Iraqi Freedom aircraft are available from Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. These profiles are printed on vinyl in four, six, and eight-foot-long graphics you can stick to any flat surface. The KC-10 Extender is called the "Gucci Bird" because of its versatility to refuel Boom or Drogue receivers. The KC-10 is also air refuelable... you can fill it back up. Most of the fighters deploying to the Middle East traveled there behind a KC-10. The KC-135 Stratotanker has been the air refueling workhorse around the world. I was based at Kadena Air Base for five great years, the best flying job I had during my Air Froce career. The F-15C Eagle was deployed to the Middle East for Operation Iraqi Freedom, but they had a boring war as no Iraqi Air Force fighters flew offensive or defensive combat air patrols. All F-15Cs were sent home about half way through the war because we needed the gas! F-15E Strike Eagles were tasked with a range of missions from Close Air Support to Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance (SCAR) missions destroying the Iraqi Republican Guard. Thanks for downloading and listening to this episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast. This and additional episodes of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast can be downloaded from my website at markhasara.com. Next week's episode will be with a former Iranian Air Force Colonel who planned and flew one of the longest strike missions during the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s.

LOGAN VAN HOEHN was at the peak of his profession, with the best job in the United States Navy. He was a seasoned aviator, and his mission as an adversary pilot, what the Navy commonly refers to as a "Bogey Driver," was to play the "bad guy." As an adversary pilot, Logan trained other naval aviators to be the best pilots in the Navy. In simulated air-to-air combat missions over the deserts of Nevada, he "taught" the good guys, either by training or "killing" them in simulated combat scenarios, and then instructing them on how they might have done better. That is, until the fallout from the widely-publicized scandal known as "Tailhook '91." A small error in judgment ended his career. He found commercial airline work easy, but also uninspiring. He decided that what he really wanted was to be rich. He had a dream. All he needed was an "Angel," someone with seed capital. He found one, and more. SILENT PARTNER is a story about a naval aviator who finds himself unwittingly immersed in the most extensive distribution network of cocaine and heroin in United States history. At a time when Pablo Escobar was at the apex of his power, the war on drugs had just begun. Rumors that the CIA was selling drugs on the streets of the United States ran rampant in the wake of the Iran-Contra scandal.

Nova Vol 2 #2 (1994)At this point, its quite possible that Fabian Nicieza has written every comic that we’ve done on this show. I mean, have we gone insane with New Warriors-related books? Let’s be honest, they are not that good. Bunch of boring young heroes doing boring young hero stuff like playing video games and pretending to be Batman.Anyway, Nova takes on the villainess Tailhook who might be his girlfriend and might be out there killing scumbags with a barbed whip. That doesn’t stop him from eating the largest order of curly fries the 616 has every seen. In 2013, the White House ordered the Pentagon to open combat roles to women and gave the military a three year deadline. As women take on more roles in the U.S. military, both on the frontlines and in leadership, the Pentagon must face an issue it’s long ignored – relations between men and women. Tailhook and the Marines United Scandal reveal a military culture that can be at odds with women and their roles alongside men. But the complications don’t end there. This week on War College, journalist Kevin Knodell walks us through the U.S. military’s general discomfort with talking about sex, according to female service members he spoke with. The Airspeed audience first met ENS Evan Levesque (pronounced “leh-VECK”) as a MDN 1/C at the US Naval Academy in 2010. We then checked in with him during his primary flight training in the T-6B in February of 2012. Since then, ENS Levesque has gone on to tailhook training, flying the T-45 Goshawk. This episode features more than an hour of conversation with ENS Levesque about what it's like to fly jets and to prepare to land an aircraft on a floating runway.
The podcast host and cohost take a break from the routine and head to Reno, Nevada with hundreds of other Naval and Marine aviators for the annual Tailhook Convention and Reunion.
