Does a bear kill in the woods? That's the question Patrick Horvath sets out to answer in his “Richard Scarry meets Dexter” opus Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, the subject of this year's very first Four-Color Flashback. The 2024 IDW series takes place in an idyllic world of anthropomorphic animals where not all is as it seems–the local hardware store owner, Samantha Strong, has a nasty habit of heading out to the city and slaughtering random passersby. That is, until another serial killer comes to her small town of Woodbrook, threatening the life she has carefully maintained for decades. Paul, Arlo, and Special Guest™ Eric Sipple discuss Horvath's deceptively simple cartooning, his brilliant use of panel layouts, the limits of the book's suburban satire, Hassane Otsmane-Elhaou's visionary lettering, and so much more. Plus, Arlo raves about Best Picture nominee Nickel Boys.   NEXT: we'll be back, someway, somehow.   BREAKDOWN 00:00:28  -  Intro / Guest 00:02:48  -  Banter and generally wasting time 00:08:44  -  Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees 01:35:47  -  Outro / Next   LINKS “Exclusive Interview: Patrick Horvath on BENEATH THE TREES WHERE NOBODY SEES” by Christian Angeles, The Beat   MUSIC “Teddy Bear's Picnic” by Henry Hall, The Best Children's Songs & Stories (2014) “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” by Lead Belly, The Tradition Masters (2002)   GOBBLEDYCARES National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  Abortion Funds in Every State: https://bit.ly/AbortionFundsTwitter Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ The Trevor Project provides information and support to LGBTQ youth: thetrevorproject.org Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/  National Center for Transgender Equality: transequality.org Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://www.unduemedicaldebt.org/  Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

It's a wrap! Is hoop uitgestelde teleurstelling? The Bowery 'All Those Years'. When you think of the name John Corabi it is almost instinctive to play word association and come up with Motley Crue straight after, but the singer is more than just the frontman for one of the worlds most notorious bands on one album.Much more.Corabi has also leant his talents to bands like Scream, The Dead Daisies, Union and ESP, and over the years has made a genuine name for himself as one of the finest vocalists on the hard rock circuit. It seems strange then that the man would be embarking on a solo tour titled Solo & Acoustic, Songs & Stories, with just his guitar for company and a whole swag of songs in his repertoire to choose from. This will be the first such tour like this Corabi has undertaken in Australia and promises to be unlike anything else you may have witnessed on the touring circuit. The shows will be performed in an intimate setting and will include Corabi's tales of life on the road, including the meaning behind some of his own songs along the way.HEAVY caught up with the great man on the eve of his visit to Australia, starting with just what we can expect from the shows."Just a little bit of everything,” he smiled. “It's kind of a retrospect pretty much of my entire career, stories, maybe some bad jokes (laughs). Just a very intimate, stripped down, no frills intimate, story teller... I used to do more songs and then at the end of the night I would sit there and wind up doing almost interviews, like 'hey, what's that song about?' or 'how did you write this song?' so I figured how can I incorporate that into the actual program and so far so good, man. It's been really cool. It's funny, a lot of the fans that I've done this for so far are like 'man, I love your music mate, but the stories are awesome'. It's just a fun thing. I don't even have a set list. I literally just grab my guitar and I have fun with it. It should be cool, it should be a lot of fun.”In the full interview, John talks more about the tour, what sorts of stories he will be telling, the ratio of music to stories, what material he will draw from, the pureness of just himself and a guitar on stage, surviving the music industry and more.

3 Podcast Promotion Tips

Celtfather Music & Travel

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2021 33:45

Today, I review the success of the Pub Songs & Stories changes. I offer tips on promoting your podcast. And I tell you about two new songs coming soon. It's all on my monthly update, Celtfather Music & Travel, show #286. The podcast is brought to you by my amazing Patrons in the Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. I have some new subscribers, and I hope to make this an even more important part of my general promotion in the weeks ahead. 0:33 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR THE COMING MONTH NOV 3: Playing Favorites on Coffee with The Celtfather @ 11 AM EST NOV 5-7: CONjuration, Atlanta, GA NOV 10:  Coffee with The Celtfather @ 11 AM EST NOV 12: Interstellar Ginger Beer & Exploration Co., Alabaster, AL @ 8-10 PM NOV 13: Haeuser House Concert, Robert, LA NOV 17: Coffee with The Celtfather @ 11 AM EST WEDS: Coffee with The Celtfather, YouTube (Season 9) @ 11:00 AM EST   CELTFATHER MONTHLY UPDATES 1:30 - PODCASTS Pub Songs & Stories is coming along. I'm getting more interest in the show from musicians. I feel like I should be good for stories for a while. Though I will continue to need to hunt down more stories. In fact, if you'd like to help me to do that, I'd love to have Pub Stories producer. I'm changing the logo a tiny bit more for the podcast too. I'm redoing my business cards. I found some cool marketing ideas. But I feel like the current logo is a bit of a distraction... well, the title is. PUB Songs & Stories. Pub in the title is ultimately irrelevant. It's about the Songs & Stories. But I'm not gonna rename it. If nothing else, PUB differentiated it from other shows. So I'm making some minor changes before I add that logo to my new business cards. I've decided my next business card design will return to being a billboard for my music and the podcast. Finally, I'm moving the release date to Tuesdays. That's so I can hopefully release it early to Patrons (ideally on Thursday, but worst case Monday) before it goes out to the public. 5:31 - PUB SONGS & STORIES CHANGES SUCCESS OR FAILURE? 7:26 - 3 PODCAST PROMOTION TIPS Create intros for each episode. Find something intriguing tidbits from the show to use as a teaser to make people really want to listen. Share those teasers along with unique graphics (or Video) BEFORE the show comes out. That gets people to actually subscribe to the podcast. Use a unique URL to get mailing list subscribers AS WELL AS podcast subscribers to the show. 11:59 - PODCAST UPDATE CONT. I got ahead with the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. As always happens, I lose that lead with each month as I make room for other things I need to work on. So it's time to produce more podcasts before the next big holiday. The In The 'Verse podcast launches the first episode of season 2 this Saturday. Mikey and I wrote songs inspired by the Doctor Who episode "Blink". I LOVE my new song. It's another that makes me feel like I'm becoming a better songwriter. I still need to write more songs. But this is a great start. The Celtic Christmas Podcast will release a new episode soon. Well, sort of new. I'm actually fundraising for a fully new episode. At this rate, I won't get it. But if nothing else, I'm gonna add the Celtic Christmas episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast to the feed as a promo for the podcast. Admittedly, I've had ZERO new patrons for that podcast. I'll post again next month. But it's looking like that podcast may not get a new episode this year. We shall see... Brobdingnagian Bards put out a new Bards podcast this month too. I actually had to re-release it. I was informed that the first version I released was actually an earlier Bards podcast. Not sure what Andrew did when he mixed it. But he sent it to me. I uploaded it without checking. So about two weeks later, the actual episode came out. I feel like this was a REALLY good month for the Gunn Runners on Patreon. I started releasing all of the MP3s that I record for Pub Songs & Stories exclusively to Patrons. So that means there are three new recordings PLUS the ones I've been releasing from the Virtual Public House CD. I debating how. But my current plan is to compile ALL of the Pub Songs recordings onto a USB that will be released next year, along with maybe my new CD, Selcouth. 18:46 - VIDEOS I made a big decision at the beginning of October. I decided to move the date of Coffee with The Celtfather mid-season. I hate doing that. But I kept having problems attending the Thursday show. Either work-related, family-related, whatever. Thursdays just seemed to be problematic. So starting in November, Coffee with The Celtfather will be on Wednesdays at 11 AM Eastern. Mark your calendar. There are no new public videos available. But I did record a first version of my song "Blink" for Patrons. I am hoping to do a bit of promotion for my Genetic Counseling Song for Genetic Counseling Awareness Day in November. I WANTED to release a single, but oh well. At least... 20:34 - IN THE STUDIO Selcouth is finally done! It took far too long. But Mitchell and I finally finished it up. I sent it to the printers. It should arrive by the start of November. I did finally sit down to start tracking two new songs this week: "Blink" and "Yuletide". "Blink" is my new Doctor Who song. I'm gonna try to track all of my songs in the future. That means, I'll record individual tracks for better editing. "Yuletide" is some lyrics I got from Nancy Flynn about the same time as I got "Christmas in the Shire" from her. I hope to have it ready for the holiday. The autoharp is done for both so far. 21:23 - MERCH I worked out a new merch strategy at MultiVerse this month. It needs some testing. But it involves selling more than just CDs at my merch table. There will be CDs, lapel pins, download stickers and songbooks. All have digital downloads attached to them. I'm not sure if this is a good strategy or not. But I'm gonna give it a shot. Remember, subscribe to my mailing list, you get a discount code to save 15%. Patrons save 25%! 24:23 - WEBSITES I made a special page for people who take my business card and use the QR code. It'll be interesting to see if this works. But the basic idea is the card will give you a quick link to listen to music, subscribe to my podcast and mailing list. It's similar to what you'll find at Celtfather.net but even more focused. You may have seen the term Anti-Racist pop up on social media this past week, or before. Being anti-racist is viewing all racial groups as equal and supporting policies that lead to equality and justice. It not only means to acknowledge that racism exists, but to fight it whenever it arises. Don’t be tone deaf either. I cannot speak for my brother, for I have never walked as a minority in America. But my forebears did. They experienced racism as Irish immigrants in America, the No Irish Need Apply, and all that hardship that mentality symbolizes. Under British overlords, they were stolen or sentenced to slavery, often in Barbados, or even the U.S. “The curse of Cromwell: revisiting the Irish slavery debate” By John Donoghue, searches through the comparison between Irish and black slaves. Donoghue is an associate professor of history at Loyola University, Chicago. Published in 18th-19th Century Social Perspectives, Early Modern History Social Perspectives, Features, Issue 4 (July/August 2017), Volume 25 A few excerpts from this work, both relevant, and insightful: “Cromwell himself oversaw the first wave of colonial transportation to the Caribbean. Writing to parliament after leading the slaughter at Drogheda (Drohg heed ah) in September 1649, the general reported that the ‘officers were knocked on the head, and every tenth man of the soldiers killed, and the rest shipped for the Barbadoes’. Slipping easily into imperial voice, Cromwell argued that massacre and transportation were benevolent forms of terrorism, as they would frighten the Irish into submission and thus ‘prevent the effusion of blood for the future’. In this light, the history of Irish slavery should lead to solidarity with—rather than scorn for—the deep history driving the Black Lives Matter movement. Interracial solidarity may be the only means by which we can lift the curse of Cromwell that still haunts the Irish in America.  “Importantly, Irish servants and others from England and Scotland referred to themselves as ‘slaves’. African slaves also regarded Irish field hands as slaves. An anonymous writer on Barbados, most likely Major John Scott, wrote in 1667 that the Irish were ‘derided by the negroes, and branded with the epithet of “white slaves”’. Africans referred to the Irish as slaves, as the Irish did themselves, to reflect the brutal exploitation they endured as unfree plantation workers who, having been kidnapped or transported, were violently forced to work against their will. Irish sailors voyaging to the West Indies on commercial ventures or with Prince Rupert’s Royalist fleet in 1652 would have seen Irish people subjected to plantation bondage. In 1655, Irish sailors had themselves been transported after being captured serving with Royalist forces.” The Irish race – faced 800 years of attempts to euthanize us. An Gorta Mor, The Great Hunger, whose epicenter was Black 47, is only the most famous. Still they, and we, stand. The Jewish race - faced the Holocaust, and 6 million of them were murdered. Still they, and we, stand. The American Indian race – Driven from their centuries long owned land, treaties violated and starvation. Still they, and we, stand. The Black and Brown race – faced Slavery. Still they, and we, stand. Unfortunately, I am sure there are other such defining cultural attempts at systemic euthanasia. Why did so many Irish become cops, lawyers and then judges, with each succeeding generation following, even to today? This doesn’t lessen the Black cause, it validates it. Despite attempts by others, an equal opportunity gained through hard work, perseverance, wisdom and planning was available to us, often with a hand down for the ones coming after.  Blacks did not, and some still do not, have that.  To revisit Donaghue above, “… approximately twelve million Africans who endured the Middle Passage to the Americas from the early sixteenth century through to the late nineteenth century, who, if they lived (approximately two million of them perished), faced perpetual slavery for themselves and their children, something whites never or almost never experienced.”  The difference for the Irish is that it did not pass on to their children. You cannot equate Irish bondage with perpetual, racial slavery, as experienced by Black slaves. Similarities, certainly. Understanding and empathy, certainly. But surely you can see the systemic racism evident past and present, not just in America, but systemic here for sure. Is silence consent?  Are you, like me, afraid to speak up at times, for fear of saying the wrong thing to our brothers and sisters, and be accused of being a racist, which would crush my human loving soul, while really just wanting to help? In both interest and profession, I study our Irish and American history, and in overlap, I know just a little of what Black history is.   But, just a little. I listen, I strive to understand, to do more than just empathize, and then, do whatever I can to help. I asked a friend and former colleague, Ken Surratt, who is black, for advice - I feel helpless - what can I do? His response was, “Whenever you see racism, Stand Up - each and every time.” Simple and direct, impactful  and powerful – repetition and perseverance wear away the stone. And illuminates. NYT: May 29 there was a column titled An Antiracist Reading List.  Ibram X. Kendi wrote on books to help America transcend its racist heritage. It is NOT absolutist.  He is NOT saying ALL whites, or all Americans.  He is just saying that: No one becomes “not racist,” despite a tendency by Americans to identify themselves that way. We can only strive to be “antiracist” on a daily basis, to continually rededicate ourselves to the lifelong task of overcoming our country’s racist heritage. We learn early the racist notion that white people have more because they are more; that people of color have less because they are less. I had internalized this worldview by my high school graduation, seeing myself and my race as less than other people and blaming other blacks for racial inequities. To build a nation of equal opportunity for everyone, we need to dismantle this spurious legacy of our common upbringing. One of the best ways to do this is by reading books. Not books that reinforce old ideas about who we think we are, what we think America is, what we think racism is. Instead, we need to read books that are difficult or unorthodox, that don’t go down easily. Books that force us to confront our self-serving beliefs and make us aware that “I’m not racist” is a slogan of denial. Check out The Times for the list, if you are interested. In the first letter to the Corinthians, Paul is providing instruction to the faithful and trying to describe what the Spirit provides for the Church. He writes, “There are many different gifts, but it is the same Spirit; there are many different ways of serving, but it is the same Lord. There are many forms of activity, but in everybody it is the same God who is at work in them all. The particular manifestation of the Spirit granted to each one is to be used for the general good”. History tells us we cannot seek the easy way out, it only prolongs the end of a society, whether it be Roman Society, or American. You know that being an American is more than a matter of where your parents came from. It is a belief that all men are created free and equal and that everyone deserves an even break. Free speech carries with it some freedom to listen. No color, No religion No nationality Should come between us. We are all children of God – said Mother Theresa Harry S Truman said that the hyphenated American refers to the use of a hyphen (in some styles of writing) between the name of an ethnicity and the word "American".  It was an epithet used from 1890 to 1920 to disparage Americans who were of foreign birth or origin, and who displayed an allegiance to a foreign country through the use of the hyphen. It was most commonly directed at German Americans or Irish Americans (i.e. Catholics) who called for U.S. neutrality in World War I. Former President Theodore Roosevelt in speaking to the largely Irish Catholic Knights of Columbus at Carnegie Hall on Columbus Day 1915, asserted that,[4] There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all ... The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic ... There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else. Now, that is tough to hear. I consider myself a good American. Patriotic, willing to sacrifice for my country, for the greater good. I am sure I don’t believe all of what President Roosevelt said here. I understand the concept, but …  I know the power of my community when we stand together.  We all walk in many communities. So, I guess I get it, even if I do not subscribe completely, at least not yet. Mind you, this contemplation is coming from a guy who publishes an Irish-American newspaper, Irish books, this Irish-American podcast, and has had a great life because of the support of this Irish-American community.  I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth. Where I came from made me. Who I am, and choose to be though, will make me better. That does not mean I cannot see others not as fortunate, or in need of help. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory. I can see need, and I can fight those who ignore it, intentionally or not, side by side with those in need. Isn’t that reaching a hand down to pull them up, too? A great friend and civic leader, Marilyn Madigan, posted on FB a graphic that said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” I believe that is true.  We cannot walk out of church with a replenished soul, and then stomp, or kneel on the neck, of someone that we disagree with or meet up with. We cannot protect one person’s rights, and ignore another’s, let alone a whole race’s. An officer’s indefensible actions, once, over a career, or over 9 minutes… ? It is much more than being just about justice.  It is about Human Rights, which transcend, pretty much anything. Every man, woman and child’s rights. I understand, as a white male, that I will never understand what it is to be black in America. Yet, I understand some of it, in shared experiences, in No Irish Need Apply, and all the symbolism and racism attached to that, in my roots. A person is just about as big as the things that make them angry. Injustice makes me angry. Disregard for Human Rights makes me angry. Disregard for God’s creation, makes me angry. In my daily movements, instead of seeing a transaction needed to be completed before moving on to the next item on my to-do list, what if I saw each person I meet, as they are - a gift of God, loved beyond measure? There would be fewer transactions, but many more encounters with the living God. For me, this life is temporary; I strive to live in a way aimed at earning the next one. A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small package indeed. Would this difference in approach, this taking of a breath, a moment in a busy day, yield a different result, and relationship? It did, it does, for me. So then, as for me? I will choose love. *** As always, I end with a bit of the Irish: Nuair a stadann an ceol, stadann an rince (When the music stops, so does the dance) Keep playing your music. Wider audiences need to hear it. Thank you to all the gang here at WHKRadio, especially the production genius, Josh Booth, as well as Gerry Quinn and Tim Vaughn.  Your endless support is so appreciated. Ashwabay and for nearly 30 years, he’s been working with the many dedicated volunteers at Washburn’s Big Top Chautauqua, located at the base of Mt. Ashwabay, the largest music venue in Bayfield County. An original member of the Big Top’s Blue Canvas Orchestra, Phillip is currently the venue’s Operations Manager. He continues to sing in original house shows, which in 2018 include Big Top Does The Beatles, Superior!: Songs & Stories of the Big Lake, and Wild Woods & Waters. Big Top Chautauqua is a non-profit performance venue that opened in 1986. Its house shows are original musicals that combine education and entertainment for a unique multimedia experience. Local sponsors provide free shuttle service to the Big Top from surrounding communities. In addition to house shows, lots of famous personalities appear on stage under the Big Top. This year’s calendar includes gigs by Jackson Browne, Buddy Guy, Lyle Lovett, Rufus Wainwright and more. Kenny G, Blues Traveler and Ronnie Milsap also make their debut appearances at the Big Top in 2018. Other events scheduled include their annual vocal competition Big Top Idol, as well as a Free Family Series on Saturdays. The canvas tents are no longer being manufactured, so plans are underway for a new venue on the property adjacent to the ski hill.
