After a couple of weeks off for rest and recalibration, Badass Records is back with a new episode, and this one features the fantastic Cole Bales of Black Light Animals.Cole is a son, a brother, a boyfriend, a bandmate times two, and he's my guest for Episode No. 164.Black Light Animals has an upcoming RecordBar gig.

Robert Plant is a singer and songwriter who was Led Zeppelin's frontman from the band's inception in 1968 until it disbanded in 1980. Led Zeppelin sold hundreds of millions of albums and in their heyday acquired a reputation for unbridled rock ‘n' roll hedonism. Since 1980 Robert has gone on to achieve success as a solo artist and has collaborated with other musicians, notably the bluegrass singer Alison Krauss. Their 2007 album Raising Sand won five Grammy Awards. Robert was born in West Bromwich in 1948. At 15 he appeared on stage for the first time as the lead vocalist for a local band after the regular singer fell ill. In 1965 he started performing with the Crawling King Snakes and it was after one of the band's gigs that he met his friend, the drummer John Bonham. In 1968 Robert and John joined up with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones to form Led Zeppelin. Later that year the band embarked on its first US tour and the enthusiastic response from American audiences heralded a new force in British music. Over the next 12 years the band released eight studio albums including Led Zeppelin IV which featured one of their most popular tracks – Stairway to Heaven. In 1980 John Bonham died from alcohol poisoning at the age of 32 and Led Zeppelin broke up. Devastated by his friend's death, Robert took himself off to explore other creative avenues, recording and performing with a wide range of artists. Robert and Alison Krauss released their second album, Raising the Roof, in 2021. Robert lives in Worcestershire near where he grew up. Hi Folks: Well, we have a great interview and some excellent original country music on this edition of the RON KING SHOW.  Our three studio guests include Tammy Jo & Iron Horse; all from the upper Ohio Valley (Moundsville, WV and St. Clairsville, Ohio) and are comprised  of Larry Truex on electric  bass guitar,  John (Buster) Gatten on electric lead guitar and Tammy Jo Whitlatch on acoustic guitar and vocals.  Tammy Jo & Iron Horse have only been together a little over a year but the individual members of the band all have years of experience  playing with other bands before getting together to play in Iron Horse. The group has just released their first CD together called "MY CADILLAC" and boy is it a good one! Their title tune written by Tammy, called "My CADILLAC, is quite reminiscent of the vibe on the Grammy winning CD "RAISING SAND," produced by T Bone Burnett and starring Allison Krause and Robert Palmer. Another great original tune on the new CD, also written by Tammy, is a song called "WEST VIRGINIA." (No. not the one by John Denver; that song is called "Country Roads.) And to let  you hear just how unbelievably good the band is we'll let you hear "WEST VIRGINIA"  on the podcast. We think that TAMMY JO & IRON HORSE is one of the very best country bands to come out of west Virginia in a long time and, after listening to their music, we think you'll agree. Happy listening!   Ron King

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Robert Plant is arguably the most iconic rock vocalist of all time. As the frontman for Led Zeppelin, his dynamic, soaring vocal style was the perfect lead for the band's unparalleled musicianship. After Zeppelin broke up in 1980 following the death of drummer John “Bonzo” Bonham, Plant set out on his own and recorded songs that drew inspiration from North African music, psych rock, and the Blues.  In 2007 Plant began collaborating with Alison Krauss, the famed bluegrass singer and fiddle player. Under the guidance of producer and Broken Record alum, T Bone Burnett, their first album, Raising Sand, sold over a million copies in the US and won five Grammys, including Album of the Year.  On today's episode, Rick Rubin talks to Robert Plant about recording his latest release with Krauss, Can't Let Go. Plant also talks about how a trip to the Sahara in the early ‘70s with Jimmy Page inspired them to write “Kashmir.” And he remembers the first time he met John Bonham as a teenager and Bonham declared himself, “the best drummer in the world.” Subscribe to Broken Record's YouTube channel to hear all of our interviews:  https://www.youtube.com/brokenrecordpodcast and follow us on Twitter @BrokenRecord You can also check out past episodes here: https://brokenrecordpodcast.com Hear a playlist of all of our favorite Robert Plant songs HERE. Robert Plant is in his own words “cold” and “prickly” while speaking about his new album with Alison Krauss, Raise The Roof. First thing upon joining the Zoom call from London, Plant jovially launches into the much misattributed quote “talking about music is like dancing about architecture.” But he is neither callous, nor coy. For Plant the music is ineffable, a joyous celebration of friendship, and a kindred love of song that he shares with Krauss and producer T-Bone Burnett. Their album follows up from their 2007 Grammy award winning album Raising Sand. Both albums are steeped in americana and roots music, favorites that the trio traded across the Atlantic over many years of friendship. There are few hints of Plant's Led Zeppelin or Krauss' Union Station. Instead their collaboration sounds timeless, haunting and melancholic. Their idiosyncratic sound emerged from an entirely organic process, a method that both parties are happy to share, but reticent to analyze. Switched On Pop's co-host Charlie Harding spoke with Plant and Krauss about the making of Raise The Roof. Please note: There was an editing error in this portion of the show. That has been fixed. In addition, the opening Thanksgiving montage was reinserted due to popular demand. In this series of two shows we explore the Blues and Folk roots of Led Zeppelin. There is no question that Zeppelin borrowed heavily. We'll hear on Robert Plant lifts melody lines and lyrics to construct some of the most icon songs of the 1970s and early 80s. Undoubtedly Zeppelin's music launched thousands of bands and changed the direction of popular music (while it's not included in these shows, even rapper Sean Puffy, Puff Daddy Combs lifted the guitar riff from Zeppelin's Kashmir to create a top hit including a joint appearance with Jimmy Page on Saturday Night Live: now that's being influential). It's been my experience that most modern days blues music listeners came to the genre via The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers, or Led Zeppelin. When I discussed the idea for this show with regular listeners, it became apparent that most had gotten the Led outta their system some many years ago. Yet it was no surprise that by massive numbers, the positive feedback on this show has been ginormous! Evidently exploring the musical roots of Zeppelin has rekindled a long forgotten love. Please, enjoy the show. And thank-you for listening.Oh. And by the way, after more than a decade, Robert Plant has reunited with Alison Krauss for a new album. Along the way we hear about his landmark 1972 anthology Nuggets, and about his thrilling new book Lightning Striking.Clips from John Tobler's 1978 audio interview with Patti prompt Lenny to relive key moments from the '70s, including the pair's engagement with the British punk scene on their band's first London visit in May '76. To mark the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin IV, he also talks about his rave Rolling Stone review of that album, a piece he stands by to this day. His hosts also note the imminent release of the follow-up to Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' Americana classic Raising Sand. The RBP team pays its respects to Maureen Cleave, whose crucial early pieces on the Beatles made her part of Fab Four folklore. We had the pleasure of interviewing Hush Kids over Zoom video! Nashville -based duo Hush Kids return with a new EP Weatherman.Comprised of renowned artists Jill Andrews and Peter Groenwald, this is Hush Kids' first new release since their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2018. The lead single and title track "Weatherman" is out now and finds the duo reuniting with Grammy Award-winning producer Ian Fitchuk (Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Leon Bridges)."During the spring of 2020, when we were in lockdown, it rained, poured really, for days, maybe even weeks," stated Jill. "My husband Jerred has lived most of his adult life in dry arid places and he wasn't used to it. He would look outside almost every day, saddened by the dark sky and soggy earth. He would say, 'This place just never stops. It's like a rain forest.' I always like to put a silver lining on things so my response was usually something like, 'I guess that's why it's so green and beautiful here.' But the sunless days can take their toll on the best of us, and I could tell that he was feeling down as the rainy days and tumultuous weather wore on. She continued, "All of this was on my mind that day last spring when I got together with Ian and Peter to write for the next Hush Kids record. We sat on Ian's back porch and caught up for a long time, enjoying being in each other's presence so much because it had been a while since we'd last seen each other. This one came easily to us and I think we all cried a little when we were writing it. I'm so happy that we can share it with you guys today! I hope that your days are sunny even when the rain is pouring down.” "This was the first song I had written in person for maybe eight months," added Peter. "We were on a porch, it felt kind of weird, but we trusted each other. Jill said she had an idea, and I believe she sang what is now the first line of the song. I tend to have a look on my face when I think something is amazing, and it actually looks like I'm disgusted...food, art, music...it's more of a look of disbelief that something can be that good. That's how I looked when Jill shared this idea with us.” Hush Kids is a friendship with music. It began long before it had a name when two beloved Nashville artists with impressive solo careers were put together by their publishers to write songs for other people; in time, they discovered they had been writing for themselves all along. Their earliest sessions revealed more than chemistry, they revealed kindredness, an innate understanding that allowed two very different people to write some of the most deeply personal music of their careers. Incredible, instinctive vocal symmetry, captivating melodies, and intimate, intelligent lyrics speak to the years of tireless craftsmanship and well-earned successes by both artists respectively. Garnering praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Paste, Relix, and Folk Alley, among others, Hush Kids' 2018 debut journeys across the unexpected, the strangeness of love rather than the sweetness, the beauty of the world rather than the bullshit. Guided by writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ian Fitchuk, the record paired the effortless, addictive pop sensibility of The Carpenters with the dusty, atmospheric, desert landscape of Robert Plant and Allison'sKraus's Americana classic Raising Sand. Despite the name, Hush Kids is not about quiet, it's about stepping away from the wrong kind of noise to embrace the music. A gifted composer, producer, and musician, Peter has toured extensively and shared the stage with artists such as The Civil Wars, Andrew Belle, and Ruston Kelly. In 2020, he joined forces with Sean McConnell and Garrison Starr to release an EP as My Sister, My Brother. Never one to rest, Peter followed that up with an EP in early 2021 co-written and co-produced alongside production duo I WAS THE LIONtitledCome To Life. Jill, a founding member of the alt/countryfavoriteThe Everybodyfields, has performed alongside The Avett Brothers, The Secret Sisters, and DrewHolcomb & the Neighbors as well as secured television placements that includeGrey's Anatomy, This Is Us, and the theme song for SyFy'sbelovedWynona Earp. In2020, she released her critically acclaimed album and accompanying book Thirties, and followed that up with a dark EP of songs from her back catalog called Vultures. We want to hear from you! Singer-songwriter Taylor Leonhardt has been on some big stages lately, playing guitar with Amy Grant, Andrew Peterson, and others, and has a slew of collaborations over the last couple of years. Her “star” is certainly on the rise. But as she prepares for the release of her third independent solo album, this Texas-born, Carolina-bred, new Nashville resident is leaning into her Americana roots, and her circle of friends, for both her songs and her sound. In this episode, we get to know this engaging artist as we explore the power of community and influences in the pursuit of our voice. We also talk about the difference between taking some classes, and really learning a language, and what Taylor’s adventure in Paris might teach us about listening to understand.   On the Jukebox, we survey four of the artists cited as influences by Leonhardt and featured in her specially curated and corresponding playlist. Carole King’s Tapestry, Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball, Patty Griffin’s 1,000 Kisses, and Krauss & Plant’s Raising Sand. We also consider some wisdom about Southern Writers from Flannery O’Connor on our Soapbox feature. It’s a full episode, for sure, but you can handle it. We believe in you. These two found the common ground between their respective genres by covering artists from the Everly Brothers to Sam Phillips, and found their own beautiful sound while they were doing it. Drummer Jay Bellerose is my guest on the show this week. If your musical taste crosses over with mine at all, Jay is probably the drummer on some of your favorite records of the last 15 years. If you've been following this show, Jay's name has come up many times in other interviews, so it was high-time to drag him in for an episode of his own! Jay's unique approach to drumming, with unorthodox setups and an awesome palette of vintage drums has made him the go-to drummer for producers like T-Bone Burnett and Joe Henry. We talk about his approach to drumming and musicality in the studio, and how he tries to be very selective about the projects he takes on. In fact, he once turned down a gig with David Byrne, only to take his first gig with Joe Henry, opening for David Byrne! Jay has played on albums for BB King, Gregg Allman, Ray LaMontagne, Allen Toussaint, Bettye LaVette, Solomon Burke, Bonnie Raitt and the list goes on and on. Jay and I talked about his early days at Berklee, his long stint with Paula Cole, how to survive in a multi-drummer session with Jim Keltner, and how he had to work to fit into the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss touring band after making the acclaimed "Raising Sand" record. It's an illuminating conversation for any music fan - please share and enjoy, and don't forget to subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!

A very special show, with all the regular bits you like, Weird News and Hot Topics. We will be interviewing musical guest guest Bradford Loomis and Beth Whitney.  When artists Beth Whitney and Bradford Loomis began writing together, they had no  idea their casual co-writing experiment would blossom into the much anticipated album  The Banner Days (releasing August 23rd on MTS Records). That first night, they wrote  “My Beloved” in two hours. And after a few more writing sessions, it was clear to both,  that these songs merited a bold decision. From the first time they played together, along with Beth's husband/collaborator, Aaron  Fishburn, the chemistry has been powerful. The combination of Beth's delicate, pure,  and melodious voice and Bradford's soulful, growling tone makes for a beautifully heart  wrenching harmonious blend. Their dramatic crescendos, minimalist intensity, through intricate harmonies have elicited  comparisons to The Civil Wars, the Swell Season, and Robert Plant and Alison  Krauss' Raising Sand. With equal parts sweetly anthemic, pop tinged folk, provided by Beth, and Bradford's  gritty, passionate Americana Roots sound, The Banner Days is an intrepid step for both  artists. www.thebannerdays.com https://www.facebook.com/bannerdays https://twitter.com/TheBannerDays Beth Whitney - Ukulele, Vocals,  Bradford Loomis - Guitar, Vocals Aaron Fishburn - Upright Bass, Group vocals Luke Peterson - Drums, Percussion, Group vocals Jessie Scott - Violin Brandon Bee - Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, Organ (Wurlitzer, B3), Slide Guitar, Pedal Steel,  Banjo, Percussion, Group vocals
