Yes, we have THE Mike Allred: father of Madman, creator of Doop, iZombie, and so many others, artist extraordinaire, and lover of comic books! If you didn't know, Mike started out in broadcasting, first on the radio and then as a TV reporter in Europe. But soon he's back in his native Oregon, chewing up the independent comics scene with graphic novels like Dead Air, Graphique Musique, and Grafik Muzik, as well as contributions to Creatures of the Id. One of those stories featured Frank Einstein, who Mike would go on to mold into his iconic Madman character. After Madman-ing it for a decade, Mike made for Marvel next, where he collaborated with Peter Milligan on X-Force (later X-Statix), then Matt Fraction on FF, and Dan Slott on Silver Surfer. He even found time to create and launch iZombie, which was adapted in a TV series. Now, he's at DC, tackling the big boys in Superman: Space Age and Batman: Dark Age (both with Mark Russell).Go back The Marvel Art of Michael Allred on Kickstarter here: http://kck.st/3YykYum. The horror-comedy tells a fast-paced, cautionary tale about systems designed to control expression and behavior and explores how society organizes itself when ratings affect your day-to-day life. With humor, horror, and the repercussions of nonexistent humanity, DEATH RATIO'D offers readers a fresh look at how today's social practices can be pushed to the extreme and do anything but bring the world closer together.Mark Russell, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! To start, Death Ratio'd…man this is a work of genius. Where did you start with this scary look at a social media nightmare future? How do you personally feel about social media?Do you feel like this is where we're heading? BAM POW COMIC HOUR PODCAST RETURNS TO THE STUDIO! Hello True Believers, were back from our extended break returning to the universe to bring you exciting new comic book collected edition and graphic novel conversations. Superman Space Age written by Mark Russell and art Michael Allred with colors by Laura Allred is BAM POW Comic Hour's 2023 book of the year. Like many retellings of Superman's origin story, Superman Space Age does explain the origins as the Man of Steel from out space who learns about who he is and why is Superman. The unique twist that this creative team is set with a background of America in the 1960s with real world events and historical figures with iconic DC characters merging to blend the two worlds together. Clark Kent is on a journey of finding his purpose of how he can help others with the time he has on earth. The age of super heroes is born and receiving the call to action has tremendous weight and the ability to make the right decision has a huge responsibility. This book has 3 extended chapters taking place in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. The art by Michael Allred has a unique cartoon stylized perspective. However, this creative team does an incredible job at this ambitious vision only they could accomplish. We recommend this book to anyone looking for a fresh superman story and for fans of stories that blend history and fantasy together that delivers a deep meaningful, yet fun story with DC Comic Characters.

Jace is joined by Eisner-award winning writer Mark Russell to chat about Superman: Space Age. Nominated for best limited series for the 2023 Eisner's, Space Age follows the titular character through the civil unrest of the 60's to the urban challenges of the 70's into the consumerism of the 80's with a realistic yet fantastical feel that only would work in a DC comic. With incredible art from Mike and Laura Allred this is a must-read story of DC's great characters and universe being shaped by real-world events along with the crisis's that work so well in DC's multiverse. Plus the guys chat about the Superman vs Imperious Lex story which feels like it belongs in the same universe as Space Age.

Our next guest was just nominated for 3 Eisner Award's and deservedly so in the eyes of our host, one of his biggest fans. Mark Russell broke free of a fundamentalist religious upbringing and used that knowledge to write a novel that skewered the Bible in a deeply comedic a fashion. This opened a path towards a career in comics that began with Prez and lead to The Flintstones, which despite it's simplistic origins was an incredibly intelligent book that dissected the concepts and institutions we follow today through their origins in a primitive society. A unique and thought provoking author his newest book Superman: Space Age is a masterpiece of superhero narratives exploring the idea of hope in the face of the direst of situations. André and Mark discussed staying off the "weirdo" list at the local Library, the importance of perspective when it comes to navigating our complex society, Existential Dread mixed with curiosity and the endurance of hope.

Chris talks with Traveling to Mars and Superman: Space Age writer Mark Russell. Russell talks about the introspective nature of a story like Traveling to Mars and what it's like writing Superman through history with Space Age.
When I asked comics writer Mark Russell (Exit, Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles, Fantastic Four: Life Story, Superman: Space Age) to come on the show, he immediately said that he wanted to discuss Sandman: World's End because he thought that they were some of the best comics ever made. I always thought that those issues sucked but I really respected Mark's opinion, so I was pretty sure this was going to be a good discussion. So, which is it? Best comics ever made, or a real low point in the Sandman series? Listen to find out. Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes. And here's the link to the show on Spotify. Comic writer Mark Russell makes his return to BTR fresh from the Eisner Awards and breaks down his new upcoming projects, including his DC comic series, “Superman: Space Age!” Just a couple weeks ago at SDCC Mark won the, prestigious, Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication for his AWA book, “Not All Robots.” With several past nominations this is his first win and the Revenge crew couldn't be happier! Being the “low-level” psychics that we are… we can confidently say that this is just the first of many more to come. Congratulations Mark! There isn't a writer more deserving! Then we sink our claws into the “cold war” and discuss Mark's new Superman series “Superman: Space Age.” At the height of Soviet and American tensions, the interstellar refugee who crash landed in the American heartland finds his super human role in a world on the verge of catastrophe. With visuals from award winning artist, Mike and Laura Allred, this is the Superman book that perfectly bridges the world shaping history of that era with the impossibilities of the superhero genre. Check it!Interesting enough, during his first visit when given The Question, the answer was very similar with the Superman he's now writing. See folks, stick to your goals, manifest your destiny, create awesome things…. Immortality?Want more context for the “Cold War,” or just want to find a decent conduit for learning the history that shapes our very existence? Mark recommends you start with Hardcore History. Follow Mark on twitter at (@Manruss) and keep up with all his projects that are about to drop in this fall. Here's just a taste of what's to come:Be oh so fine as you go through life and show the stripes of our sweet designs.Have you experienced the elusive and majestic energy of the Blue Tiger? Had a sighting in the wilderness of its eternal forest? Tasted the rich revenge of its blue milk? Then tell the people and let them know it exists!Do you need to ride the tiger through your daily existence?Twitter: @BlueTigerPodInstagram: @bluetigerrevenge This is a public episode. On today's episode, I talk to Eisner and Harvey Award-winning comics creator Mike "Spike" Allred. Originally from Oregon, Mike began his career in comics while working as a journalist. He created his well-known character Madman in the early '90s, and since then has drawn on books like Sandman, Fables, Silver Surfer and numerous others. He co-created two wonderful series: iZombie and X-Statix, and is currently drawing Superman: Space Age and a new X-Statix series.
