...and now for another Human Factors Minute! Addressing climate change, and sustainability efforts requires us to change our beliefs, assumptions, and thinking about the environment, our economies, and our well being. In order to change these, we must be aware of many common oversights when considering sustainable thinking. Most people look for evidence that confirms existing beliefs and tend to reject contradictory information, resulting in confirmation bias. When considering the future, it's easy to have misplaced confidence that the future will be similar to the past, which will make it difficult to identify mistakes and alter behavior when conditions change. Humans have a tendency to have wishful thinking, and believe that more favorable outcomes are more likely to happen than undesirable ones. Many choose to associate only with people who share their views, which often results in belief polarization, sometimes even to the effect of denying the existance of climate change. By directly addressing our biases and oversights when considering climate change and sustainability, we can begin to reflect on how we, as humans, are thinking about the problem space, and what needs to get done from a more objective perspective. ...and now for another Human Factors Minute! Many plastics are used for single-use disposable applications, such as packaging, agricultural films and disposable consumer items, and is the main source of waste plastics. Human factors plays a key role when considering the materials and design features of these plastics and can help manufacturers achieve functional yet reusable product designs. However, In many cases, reusable device manufacturers do not consider reprocessing until after the design is complete. One way in which Human Factors can impact these reusable products is through design considerations. The choice of material is crucial for a product to ensure it is reusable, reliable, and durable. Ensuring a device is reusable includes avoiding design decisions that create inaccessible areas or excessive wear by the user especially when considering devices that need to be cleaned and sterilized (like in the medical field). Ease of disassembly must also be considered when designing for reuse as users will be discouraged from recycling components and will simply trash the product instead. Ensuring that a product is well designed for recycling at the end of its lifecycle is also another critical factor for reducing waste. Recycling may not be intuitive, so using clear labeling and providing instructions that are clear and well defined should adequately assist the end user with recycling the product. This is just one of the many ways in which Human Factors can contribute to ensure minimal waste makes it to the ocean To donate to #teamseas or to find out more about the #teamseas campaign, visit teamseas.org This has been another Human Factors Minute!

Ensuring trash and recycling makes it into proper receptacles is important because it prevents pollution, reduces the need to harvest new raw materials, and is critical for reducing runoff of materials into the ocean Human factors plays a key role when considering the design of these recepticles and their environment to encourage adoption Some ways in which Human Factors can encourage people to utilize these bins are to: 1. Make clear what materials can be recycled, and where they go by using large clear words, pictures, colors, among other design features 2. Design recycling bins to discourage people from adding trash by providing small holes for cans, or designing the lid to resemble recycleable-specific features 3. Ensure trash cans are easy to use, clearly marked, and placed in an easily accessible locations next to the recycling bins for user convenience 4. Educate the public continuously on the importance of good recycling habits and ensure positive messaging around recycling to show what can be recycled and how This is just one of the many ways in which Human Factors can contribute to ensure minimal waste makes it to the ocean To donate to #teamseas or to find out more about the #teamseas campaign, visit teamseas.org Guest read by Lab Member Katie Sabo

...and now for another Human Factors Minute! Safety is a large concern in waste collection as it has a higher than average fatal injury rate when compared to industry. Waste collection work is associated with a variety of physical, chemical, and biological hazards. Some studies and reports suggest that fatal injuries when exposed to these hazards are more than doubling when considering door-to-door waste collection occupations. Waste collectors are required to perform tasks that involve Frequent lifting of heavy loads, high repetitive tasks, long work durations and insufficient recovery times. These are seen are significant risk factors that may result in chronic injuries and diseases. Human factors plays an important role in improving safety for workers by implementing several human factors principles when considering the design of products, processes, and procedures. Some of these include: Training operators on proper lifting techniques Increasing frequency of collection to reduce overall weight of containers suggesting rotation of staffing to reduce fatigue in single individuals and ergonomic improvements of the collection bins and trucks to be easier to maneuver or use by operators These are just some of the ways in which Human Factors can contribute to ensure minimal waste makes it to the ocean To donate to #teamseas or to find out more about the #teamseas campaign, visit teamseas.org This has been another Human Factors Minute! I received some great questions from some audience members about episode 1230 where I interviewed Dr. Virginia Schutte about the Teamseas campaign and why you might not want to support the campaign, but donate directly to an organization's programs (such as the Ocean Conservancy's Plastic Pollution Program).  Andrew Lester-Coll asked another great question today. He asked whether it was a good idea for the Ocean Conservancy to team up with the Ocean Clean Up for the #Teamseas campaign.   Sousa Kalliovski emailed some questions that wondered what happened to the plastic after it was collected from the ocean. Sousa also asked if there are campaigns that focused on not using plastic in the first place.  Some great questions from our Speak Up For The Ocean Blue podcast community.  Check out the last episode for more details on the Teamseas controversy: https://www.speakupforblue.com/show/speak-up-for-the-ocean-blue/sufb-1230-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-teamseas-fundraiser/ Connect with Speak Up For Blue: Website: https://www.speakupforblue.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/speakupforblue/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/speakupforblue

I wanted to make a video talking about some of the amazing things influencers have brought to the world. This video highlights just a few examples of the cool charity that influencers participate in and why I think it works. The main purpose of this video though is to jump on the train with TeamSeas, Mr Beast and Mark Rober and talk about their awesome project to help the ocean by removing trash from it. In a small way I'd like to be a part of this awesome effort and I thought the way to do it would be to talk about how influencers changed the world, and how they are changing it now with projects like TeamTrees and TeamSeas.

There are many fundraisers that occur throughout the year for the oceans and they are run by various organizations. Most of them have good intentions to help protect the Oceans. Some raise a lot of money and some not so much; however, the organizations to which you donate matter.  There is a large fundraiser that is going on right now to help raise $30 million dollars that promises to take out 30 million lbs of trash from the Ocean. Two organizations will split the money into two equal parts. One of those organizations is called the Ocean Conservancy and they have a great plastic pollution program; however, the other organization is the controversial Ocean Clean Up.  If you don't recall, the Ocean Clean Up is an organization that promised to clean up the Pacific Garbage Patch within 5 years of its operation. It not only failed, but it ignored many scientific criticisms and never made their environmental assessment public, but promised that everything was fine. None of their prototypes have worked even though millions of dollars were invested.  Now the Ocean Clean Up stands to gain a lot of money through a crowdsourcing campaign called Teamseas. The campaign is not talking about the controversy surrounding the Ocean Clean Up Project thereby legitimizing their work in the Ocean.  Dr. Virginia Schutte was asked to help raise funds for the campaign, but refused to participate due to the Ocean Clean Up being involved.  Virginia joins me on the show today to discuss why and what you could do to help protect the Ocean.  Make a donation to the Ocean Conservancy: https://donate.oceanconservancy.org/page/92465/donate/1 Connect with Dr. Virginia Schutte: website: https://www.virginiaschutte.com/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@vgwschutte? Just this week, as part of doubling down on their pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030, Apple announced 10 new renewable projects around the world through their Power for Impact program, including partnering to protect and restore the 27,000-acre mangrove forests in Córdoba, Colombia. When it comes to reducing plastics specifically, Apple is working on incorporating more recycled materials. Like the HomePod mini mesh, which is 90% recycled plastic. The Apple Watch Brained Solo Loop, which is 100 recycled polyester, and across the company, more than 70 parts now average 50% recycled plastics as of 2020, and 17 additional parts now use plastics made from bio-based content instead of fossil fuels. They've also begun switching to paper wrapping for products, including the iPhone, avoiding 600 metric tons of plastics, and retail bags are now 80% recycled fiber. Overall, Apple has already reduced plastic in packaging by almost half in three years and they have a goal of removing it completely by 2025.Other efforts include recycling aluminum and rare earth elements like magnets, and doing trade-ins and recycling programs for whole entire products, and it's all designed to minimize the impact e-waste has on our planet, our oceans, and more accurately, our lives. To do your part, please visit TeamSeas.org now!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

https://teamseas.org/  The Tragedy of the Commons is an economic idea made popular by the American ecologist Garrett Hardin, who used the analogy of ranchers grazing their animals on a common field. Individual ranchers will seek to add additional livestock, to increase their profits. The benefit of adding additional animals accrue to the rancher alone, while the costs are shared. The tragedy is that ultimately  the field will be destroyed, due to overconsumption. This scenario is played out on a daily basis in numerous instances, having grave consequences for the world's resources. In todays video we discuss the research of Lin Ostrom (the first woman to win The Nobel Prize in Economics). Ostrom - based upon her research - did not believe that the “tragedy” in such situations was inevitable. Her research showed that if the herders decided to cooperate with one another, monitoring each other's use of the land and enforcing rules for managing it, they could avoid the tragedy.Todays video is associated with #TeamSeas - a group of YouTube content creators, lead by "Mister Beast" raising money to remove plastic waste from the ocean.Patrick's Books:Statistics For The Trading Floor:  https://amzn.to/3eerLA0Derivatives For The Trading Floor:  https://amzn.to/3cjsyPFCorporate Finance:  https://amzn.to/3fn3rvC Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/PatrickBoyleOnFinanceVisit our website: www.onfinance.orgFollow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoylePatrick Boyle On Finance YouTube Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/PatrickBoyleOnFinance)
