Jesus understands temptation because He faced it fully—forty days in the wilderness—yet never gave in, showing us both compassion for our weakness and a model of faithfulness. In Luke 4, each temptation is met not with arguments or excuses, but with God's Word: “the Scriptures say,” reminding us that we resist by anchoring our hearts in Scripture and living under the lordship of Christ rather than the “prince of this world.” We're called to exercise our own will—refusing to simply drift with the dominant culture—and to pursue our vocation with integrity, working as if it depends on us while praying as if it depends on God. Even as we pray boldly for healing and protection, we do not test or leverage God; we submit to His wisdom and timing, trusting that He acts in ways we sometimes can't predict. Because Christ passed this test and ultimately gave His life for us, we are forgiven, made new, and called to live faithfully—marked by integrity, truth, and wholehearted surrender to Him.

The Rock Church of Fenton Sermons

Before beginning his earthly ministry, Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the adversary. This enemy, the same one faced by believers today, sought to tempt him in every conceivable way. Jesus endured these trials as a human, demonstrating the path to victory in spiritual warfare. He fought not with divine power but with the same spiritual resources available to Christ followers: the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. Because Jesus was tempted just as we are, yet remained without sin, he became a compassionate High Priest who understands our vulnerabilities and sympathizes with us in our moments of need.

Jesus Followers Will Be Tempted, but God “will not let you be tempted beyond your ability . . . to endure”

Jesus Followers Will Be Tempted, but God “will not let you be tempted beyond your ability . . . to endure” MESSAGE SUMMARY: You will be tempted again and again, but the temptation itself is not the sin. The sin resides in your grabbing onto the temptation; dwelling on the temptation; and following through on the temptation. Jesus was tempted, and He always faced temptation by quoting scripture to the temptation source. As Jesus tells you about Temptation and sin in Matthew 18:7-8: “Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.". Also, Paul, in 1 Corinthians 10:13, confirms that God will not permit us to be tempted in a manner that we will be unable to resist: “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.". You can follow Jesus' example by using scripture to deal with a temptation – there is scripture to deal with every temptation that you may face.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Most merciful God I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I might delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.  TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Anxiety. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Peace. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Matthew 4:1-11; 1 Corinthians 10:13; Hebrews 4:14-16; Psalms143:1-12. A WORD FROM THE LORD WEBSITE: www.AWFTL.org. Christmas can feel magical. It can also feel exhausting. If you're a parent who secretly feels pressure rising as the holidays approach—the expectations, the mess, the emotions, the memories—you're not alone. And sometimes, the clearest wisdom doesn't come from another parenting book or productivity hack. Sometimes it comes from children. I sat down with my two sons for a conversation about Christmas. I expected sweetness and laughter (and we definitely had that). But what I didn't expect was how profoundly wise their reflections would be—for moms and dads who want to keep Christ and joy at the center, even when emotions run high. May this conversation be a gentle reminder for all of us about what truly matters this season. The Most Important Thing During the Holiday Season When I asked my boys what makes Christmas special, their answers were simple: Being with family Giving and receiving gifts And most importantly—Jesus Isn't it interesting how easy it is for adults to know that truth, but still lose sight of it when stress enters the room? Kids seem to understand something we forget:Christmas isn't about perfection. It's about presence. Not perfect decorations. Not perfect meals. Not perfect behavior. But hearts that are oriented toward love. How Christmas Gets Derailed (And What Actually Matters) One of the most insightful moments came when we talked about what can ruin Christmas. Their answer? A negative, ungrateful attitude. And then they surprised me again by pointing out something many parents don't want to hear: "Adults need to remember this too." Children feel the atmosphere of a home.Even when no words are spoken. Tension.Unresolved anger.Stress that leaks out sideways. Kids may not understand the details—but they absolutely feel the weight. And when parents are overwhelmed or snapping at each other, it impacts everything. When You're Tempted to Snap at Your Spouse So, what do you do when you're tempted to snap at your spouse? Here's where the conversation turned especially tender. We talked about parents getting stressed—especially moms who want everything to be "just right" before guests arrive. And my sons said something profound: Take ownership of your emotions Don't take stress out on your spouse Walk away if you need to Calm your body before speaking They emphasized taking ownership of the way you choose to respond. We discussed Matthew 12:36 that says, "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak," The win isn't never feeling frustrated. The win is choosing restraint, humility, and love in the moment of temptation. The Gift of Calming Yourself Before You Speak How do you calm yourself before you lose your temper? They offered practical ideas—simple, doable, grace-filled: Take a walk Drink cold water Take deep breaths Step outside or into another room Take a long shower with space to think Not to avoid responsibility—but to prevent harm. Because once harsh words are spoken, they linger. And children remember not just what we say—but how it felt to be in our presence. If You've Messed Up Before… There Is Grace What if Christmas in the past was painful? What if words were spoken—or wounds created—that still ache? Their advice? Pray Go to the person you hurt Say "I'm sorry" sincerely Ask if there's anything you can do to repair And then—trust God with what you cannot undo. You are not disqualified from joy because of past mistakes. Keeping Christ at the Center (Without Adding Pressure) When I asked how families can keep Jesus at the center of Christmas, their answers weren't complicated: A nativity scene A meaningful star on the tree Praying before meals Simply thinking about Jesus Not performance. Not religious pressure. Just intentional reminders. Sometimes the most Christ-centered thing you can do is slow down enough to remember why you're celebrating. Final Thoughts: What Happens After Christmas The final question: When January comes, how do you want to remember this Christmas? My boys said: Happy, Safe, Grateful, Hopeful. Not impressed. Not exhausted. Not relieved it's over. But filled. That kind of Christmas doesn't come from doing more. It comes from being more present. If the holidays feel intimidating this year, hear this:You don't have to create a perfect Christmas. You are invited to cultivate a peaceful one. One where Christ is honored. Where your marriage is protected. Where your children feel safe. Where grace is louder than stress. And if you feel overwhelmed already—pause. Jesus came for this kind of moment. May your home be filled with warmth, peace, and joy this season. And may Christ—not pressure—be at the center.   With love, The Delight Your Marriage Team   PS - We are hosting our In-Person Training Celebration Call THIS Sunday at 6:30p. Welcome to Day 2751 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – From Eden to New Jerusalem: The Pattern of Ascent, Fall, and Redemption Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2751 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps!   I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2751 of our Trek.   The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website   theologyinfive.com.   Today's lesson is titled From Eden to New Jerusalem: The Pattern of Ascent, Fall, and Redemption. Throughout Scripture, a pattern emerges—one that contrasts the fall of those who grasp at divinity with the exaltation of those who receive it by grace through believing loyalty. From Eden to Hermon, Babel, and ultimately to the New Jerusalem, the Bible traces the path of human ambition, divine descent, and final restoration. The first segment is: Eden: Seizing Divinity, Ending in Death In the beginning, Adam and Eve were created in the image of God, placed in sacred space, and destined to reign with Him. Yet they were not content to reflect His glory. Tempted by the serpent, they reached for equality with God on their own terms: “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis three verse 5 By attempting to grasp what had not been offered, they fell. Cast out of the garden, barred from the Tree of Life, and sentenced to die, their descent began not just physically but spiritually. They traded divine fellowship for exile and mortality. The second segment is: Hermon: Divine Rebellion and the Corruption of Mankind The next great rebellion came not from humans alone, but from the spiritual realm. According to 1 Enoch 6, the sons of God descended upon Mount Hermon and made a pact to defy God by taking human wives and producing the Nephilim. Their actions unleashed chaos and violence across the earth. This attempt to force a merger of heaven and earth on their own terms brought catastrophic consequences. God judged the Watchers, bound them in the Abyss, and destroyed their offspring in the Flood. Yet their spirits—demons—remained to corrupt mankind. The descent from Hermon marked not exaltation but divine exile, and it echoes the same pattern: those who attempt to seize divine authority fall into judgment. The third segment is: Babel: Ascending in Pride, Scattered in Judgment The next great act of rebellion came at Babel. Humanity, unified in language and purpose, sought to reach the heavens: “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves…” Genesis Eleven verse 4 Though the text says they were “one people,” this unity was likely driven by demonic influence—a renewed attempt to reopen the spiritual gateway severed at the Flood. Some modern theological reconstructions suggest the builders, influenced by demonic forces, may have sought to create a gateway that would allow the imprisoned Watchers to rise again and make war on Heaven itself. But the plan was doomed. God had already sentenced the Watchers to the Abyss, and no human or spiritual force could overturn that...

Meanwhile, Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen)is on the brink of a significant decision: whether to say "I do" to Drew or flee the scene once again.  GH spoilers reveal Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) is thrilled when her father, Ned Ashton (Wally Kurth), arrives home after a cardiac crisis. The Quartermaine family's Thanksgiving celebration might be in jeopardy as Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard), plans to cook. The family is known for their Thanksgiving disasters, and a turkey might just be the newest addition to their list of misfortunes.  Spoilers for GH look for Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) to be in for a surprise as the charges against her grandson, Rocco Falconeri (Finn Carr), may be dropped. However, her relief may be short-lived as she's haunted by the corpse of Dalton (Daniel Goddard) found in her trunk. In the latter part of the week, Sidwell flexes his power, possibly towards Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) or Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) the weeks of 12/01-12/12, 2025. Ever feel the tug to retreat to what feels safe and familiar when life gets hard? We sit with a community that knew that pull well—Jewish believers near Jerusalem, pressured to trade the risk of following Jesus for the predictability of rituals and rules. Hebrews chapter 4 offers a bracing alternative: not more striving, but a living Word that cuts through our defenses and a Great High Priest who turns exposure into healing. We start with the scalpel. “The word of God is living and active,” sharper than any two-edged sword. When Scripture lays us bare, it separates what we can't—thoughts from intentions, appearances from motives—so God can remove what harms and restore what's healthy. Then comes the pivot that changes everything: the One who sees everything is the same One who welcomes us. Jesus has “passed through the heavens” as our Great High Priest, not standing in endless effort like the priests of old, but seated because the sacrifice is complete. From there we explore how Jesus's sympathy becomes our courage. Tempted in every way we are, yet without sin, He knows the weight we carry and the cracks where we break. That sympathy is strong enough to help us in real time. We also unpack the role of priest versus prophet and why it matters that Jesus, from the tribe of Judah and not Levi, represents us before the Father according to a higher order Hebrews will soon reveal. The takeaway is practical and personal: hold fast your confession because Jesus is better—better than angels, Moses, and any system that promises peace through performance. The invitation lands with urgency and comfort: draw near with confidence to the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. If striving to please yourself or some religious organization has left you tired, come close to Jesus. If hidden motives keep sabotaging your peace, let the Word do its careful work. And if you're tempted to go back to what once felt safe, look again at the One who knows you, stands for you, and never stops interceding. Don't be deceived! If every good and perfect gift comes from the Father, why would we doubt his goodness and grace when trials of various kinds come our way? And yet, this is the temptation we all face when our faith is tested. James helps us to remain steadfast under such trials by making us aware of the 'life-cycle' of temptation and sin which brings forth death, and by reminding us of the gracious unchangeable character of God who has brought us forth into new life by the word of truth. Please pray that we might hear and abide by that word of truth and so be kept from being deceived.

The book of James tells us that God is not tempted by sin. However, Hebrews says that Jesus was tempted in every way.At first glance, this may seem like a real contradiction, so Chris from Akron, Ohio called in to ask about it.In this episode, I address Chris's concern and discuss the temptations that Jesus faced.I hope this is an encouraging reminder that we have a Savior who empathizes with our weaknesses. We hope you enjoyed this episode.
