On July 24th, Oni Press, in partnership with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., resurrected EC Comics in spectacularly bloody fashion. Tales from the Abyss #1 contains 4 stories that captures the spirit of classic EC Comics. Then, on August 7th, Cruel Universe #1, a collection of science-fiction stories. I had the good fortune of chatting with Hunter Gorinson, President and Publisher at Oni Press, along with two of the creators of one of the tales from the abyss themselves, Chris Condon and Peter Krause. My number one takeaway from this interview was both the excitement and reverence all 3 have for EC Comics. It also doesn't hurt that both of these issues are phenomenal and I was blown away by the stories and the storytelling talent on display here. We talk about how this deal developed between the family of William M. Gaines and Oni Press, the staggering influence of EC Comics to this day, and a whole lot more. Here's what Oni Press had to say about Epitaphs from the Abyss: From the publisher that drove Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Haunt of Fear, and many more into the depraved hearts of an unsuspecting world, the immortal EC COMICS returns . . . with its first ALL-NEW series in nearly 70 years! In our first extra-sized, 40-page dose of fear, witness shocking tales of torment and tension in the undying EC tradition-as wrenched from the grave by the vile intentions of acclaimed writers Brian Azzarello (Batman: Damned, 100 Bullets), Chris Condon (That Texas Blood, Night People), J. Holtham (FX's The Handmaid's Tale), and Stephanie Phillips (Harley Quinn, Grim) and realized into bloody reality by "all-slaughter" artists Jorge Fornes (Rorschach, Danger Street), Phil Hester (Family Tree), Peter Krause (Irredeemable), and more! What the Comics Code Authority couldn't kill has only made it stronger . . . EC COMICS LIVES AGAIN IN EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS! Here's what Oni Press had to say about Cruel Universe: Compelled to OBLIVION, driven to ENTROPY, all life in our cosmos can only end in one place: COMPLETE ANNIHILATION! For the first time in 70 years, the limitless fury of EC Comics rages back to life to shred the very fabric of the universe itself-and wrench bizarre tales of time and space into our dimensional plane! Our guides across this double-sized, 40-page introduction to a cosmic maelstrom of strange extraterrestrial entities, malevolent scientists, and terrifying technological catastrophes? Learn to fear the void with the irradiated imaginations of Hugo Award nominee Corinna Bechko (Invisible Republic), rising star Chris Condon (That Texas Blood), Eisner Award nominee Matt Kindt (BRZRKR, Mind MGMT), and Edgar Award winner Ben H. Winters (The Last Policeman) as they collide with the wondrously destructive visions of artists Jonathan Case (Green River Killer), Kano (Immortal Iron Fist), Artyom Topilin (I Hate This Place), and Caitlin Yarsky (Black Hammer: Reborn)! The unpredictable return of EC Comics continues here with the quantum comics event of the millennium! Galaxies will collapse. Space-time will be distorted. And your very will to exist, too, shall be broken . . . Just remember: it's all in the name of SCIENCE! Our episode sponsors After the Realm Don't miss Eisner and Harvey award winning comics creator Michael Avon Oeming's newest crowdfunding project After The Realm. With over 300 pages of material and 22 new pages of story, this graphic novel collects issues 1-5 of this realm trotting dystopian fantasy adventure that follows young ranger Oona Lightfoot's travels and travails trying to find her best friend as the nine realms are torn asunder. Howard and maybe even Lovecraft. Were there any other classical authors you turned to in constructing the narrative?I've been loving your use of captioning in The Penguin of late, but really all of your captioning shows a strong sense of character and storytelling. When scripting a story like Helen of Wyndhorn, do you start with captions or elsewhere?Early press materials compared this series to Conan the Barbarian and Wizard of Oz, both evoke fantasy, weirdness, and fights, can we expect all those and more in this series?Do you have a favorite iteration of Wizard of Oz and a favorite run on Conan the Barbarian?I've loved Bilquis' work since first seeing her work with Sugar & Spike, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow under your belts, do you have a shorthand working on Helen of Wyndhorn?Something I've adored about your work is how to pushes the comics format, which I especially saw with Danger Street. Is this something you're conscience of? Are you toying with anything in comics format with Helen of Wyndhorn?I imagine we're in for some creatures in this series, what goes into creature design from your perspective? Last time we spoke you had said Danger Street was done and getting finished, Gotham City Year One was finished, have you scripted every issue of Helen of Wyndhorn?

Jace and Rocky from ComicBoom! talk about the DC titles for the week of November 14, 2023. We reach the end of the road for WildC.A.T.s which sets up a new status quo for the team moving forward, but when we might see them again, it is too soon to say. We also have the end of The Vigil, which gives some Planetary vibes, so some Wildstorm inspired storytelling there as well and we can't wait to read more of that story. Speaking of Planetary, throw in some Authority overlap and you have the debut issue of the latest iteration of The Outsiders, plus Green Lantern continues to be action-packed, Danger Street mantains its excellence as does Detective Comics. Plus the world and character building in Sandman is top-notch. Join us to hear about these books and more!

Once upon a time, in a far-off kingdom, Tom King returned! In this episode, we go into the woods and down the dell; the path is straight toward Danger Street! We're talking with the creator about his utterly absurd and equally delightful maxi-series, illustrated by Jorge Fornés, colored by Dave Stewart, lettered by Clayton Cowles, and currently on the stands from DC Comics. What's the tougher task - knocking out another Batman story or creating a narrative where twenty-three random superhero rejects make perfect inhabitants? Tom King takes us through Danger Street's creation, the mission he's hoping to accomplish with it, and how these characters have caused him to reconsider other staples from the DC Comics stable. Our conversation also allows us to delve into our recent obsession with comic book dollar bins, an obsession that Tom King most definitely shares. Within those glorious longboxes, you never know what you'll find; for Tom, they might be the basis for his next weirdo spandex drama. Most importantly, Danger Street radically aligns with a larger conversation that we've been having at Comic Book Couples Counseling. The tiniest acts, the tiniest kindnesses, can have the most massive of impacts on our larger society. Sometimes, the greatest superpower is your availability. Showing up for others and showing up for yourself can save the day. This episode covers Danger Street's first six issues, but it's not spoiler-heavy. Our hope is that the conversation will encourage new readers to jump onto the title, so we're not looking to ruin anyone's good time. Follow Tom King on Twitter and Instagram. We get highfalutin with Mitch Gerads and Tom King, discussing their latest Dark Knight collaboration, "The Winning Card," as it appears in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #1, out now from DC Comics. The longtime collaborators continue to test each other, pulling the very best from one another and delivering a Batman tale unlike any other. It's Year One for both Bats and Joker. They're looking to prove themselves. They're looking to sell themselves to Gotham City. And sell themselves as something beyond the mere mortals that they are. Or are they? Is there something more to their masks, their supernatural charade? Tom and Mitch have their perspectives on what it means to be superhuman, and yeah, so do we, especially Lisa. The hot takes are flying fast and furious this week as we dig into Bruce Wayne's mission to fix Gotham, dissect the scariest Joker in ages, and what propels Mitch Gerads and Tom King to collaborate. This episode is Part One of a Two-Part DC Comics celebration. Please return in just a few days to hear us go further down the highfalutin boom tube rabbit hole as Tom King sticks around the Love Nest, chatting about the ultra-rad and rather incredible Danger Street miniseries.
