Things have been busy here at the Cryptid Creator Corner and we have another brand new episode this week. JOE CORALLO RETURNS and brings with him first time guest BUTCH MAPA. Joe and Butch have teamed up on the one-shot of Kardak the Mystic, which was out from Archie Comics on August 14th. Joe & Butch discuss how they pulled elements from Kardak's history to create a new story for both old and new fans. Butch talks about the character designs and creating the look of Kardak's powers and how Ellie Wright's colors elevates and complements his artwork. I had a great time chatting with Joe and Butch and this conversation left me wanting more Archie Comics! From the publisher All John Cardy ever wanted was to be recognized for his talents at magic tricks and sleight of hand. He's talented, but not enough to get noticed for it until he comes across a (unbeknownst to him) cursed ruby. This ruby grants John the power of invisibility. As Kardak the Mystic, he performs feats no one else can with this magic. Unfortunately for him, going invisible isn't just a trick of the eyes, but rather entering another realm parallel to our own. And something inside that realm wants to use Kardak to enter our world for dark purposes. Our episode sponsors unSeen/unHeard: Disability and Neurodivergence Comic Anthology on Kickstarter Don't miss this 64-page, 12 story anthology where at least 50% of each creative team is comprised of people who are neurodivergent or have a disability. It's the conversation the internet gods didn't want you to hear! But not even a hurricane could stop the fury of Joe Corallo. A razor sharp critic and all around entertaining guy, Joe stops by to talk about the role of an editor, writing for fulfillment vs paying the bills, where the ideas come from, and how he balances it all.About Joe:Joe Corallo started self-publishing comics he wrote in 2011 with various collaborators and tabled at his first convention. As he got more involved in the world of comics, he became a contributor to pop culture websites including insertgeekhere, ComicMix, Geek dot com, and Geeks OUT where he serves as blog editor. His short-form comics writing can be found in a number of anthologies including Archie's Jinx's Grim Fairy Tales and Happy Horrordays, the Ignatz nominated Dates Vol. 3, as well as Dead Beats: A Musical Horror Anthology, Yule: Dreadful Tales For The Holiday Season, and Lower Your Sights; all Ringo Award nominees. It also includes his DC Comics debut in DC Pride: A Celebration Of Rachel Pollack which spotlights DC's first trans superhero, Coagula, for the first time in over two decades available June 4th, 2024.His long-form work includes collaborations with Liana Kangas on the series She Said Destroy and TKO Shorts #1: Seeds of Eden, Rachel Pollack on The Never-Ending Party released digitally through ComiXology Originals and in print through Dark Horse Comics, as well as having written Becstar and Dahlia In The Dark for Mad Cave Studios. His debut young adult graphic novel King Arthur & the Knights of Justice, a reboot of the 90's animated series, is available now.Joe is also an Eisner and GLAAD award nominee and Ringo award-winning editor of comics and graphic novels from his anthology he curated and co-edited with Molly Jackson, Mine: A Celebration Of Liberty And Freedom For All Benefiting Planned Parenthood and Oh S#!t It's Kim & Kim! His clients include ComicMix, A Wave Blue World, Black Mask Studios, ComiXology Originals, MERC Publishing, Mad Cave Studios, and Dynamite Entertainment. On this week's episode, we're remembering one of the most important figures in the history of trans comics, Rachel Pollack. Rachel was the first openly trans writer working in mainstream comics, and the creator of Coagula from the Doom Patrol. She was also a major figure in the realms of Tarot and spiritualism, on top of being an award winning science fiction writer. Joining us today to discuss Rachel's work is her friend and collaborator, Joe Corallo. Joe also contributed an original story to last month's DC Pride: A Celebration of Rachel Pollack, in which he brought DC's first trans superhero back into ongoing continuity. We also want to dedicate this episode to Liara Kaylee Tsai, an incredible DJ who was kind enough to let us feature her music in the second episode of our show. She was a pillar of our local trans communities, and we miss her dearly. This week's opening song is her untitled sample from 15 Mar 21, and our outro is her song Tesselation Matrix. You can listen to more of her music on soundcloud at https://soundcloud.com/vutall

It's our first movie of the new year and we are starting out UPSETTING!"Soft and Quiet" is a movie that sneaks up on you and ruins your day. It is absolutely and completely without chill of any kind. It's about a group of white women who start out by attending a regular old Nazi bookclub and by the end of the night will have committed multiple felonies/hate crimes. It's a tight film. It's short. It's filmed in "one take" and follows these white women as things get wildly out of control. You're along for the whole ride AND WE DID NOT WANT TO BE... but... this movie does a few things really well. It's incredibly made, incredibly acted, brilliantly scripted. If it wasn't one of the single most traumatic watches we've had on this show, I'd say everybody should watch it. It is, however, incredibly traumatic and we are still talking about who we think the audience is for this and who should see it. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
In which the concept of voodoo has 1980s Hollywood absolutely by the balls. They can't get enough of it. Nevermind that the version of it that makes it into movies like this is absolute nonsense and a half-hearted excuse to get Lisa Bonet dancing topless. It's okay (it's not!) but you will get to see the devil who has spent the most time at the manicurist. Devil De Niro is the most surprisingly femme devil you're going to meet this month. He keeps his nails long and neat and he loves an accessory. He's got canes. He got rings. He will follow you across the country and pay private investigator to come have sex with you just so he can cut out your heart. Continuing the streak of podcast guests that I met in person at Baltimore Comic-Con, today's guest is Joe Corallo. At Baltimore, Joe was signing at the Mad Cave Studios booth and I picked up a copy of Dahlia in the Dark, his and Andrea Milana's graphic novel that's part Transporter and part Supernatural. It's a book that I loved and was excited to talk to him about it. I was also a fan of She Said Destroy and Becstar. We talk about all of that, his work with Rachel Pollack on The Never-Ending Party, plus the upcoming King Arthur and the Knights of Justice comic based on the 90s cartoon. I had such a great time chatting with Joe and no matter which series he's written that you pick up, you will not be disappointed. Check out his website here: https://joecorallo.carrd.co/. Boy howdy, this one's got the outstanding SEO of a "Thing" or a "Fly" with none of the inherent charm of those nouns.Alex Garland is back and he's down to make you incredibly uncomfortable. Old man junk? Check! Rampant sexism? Check! Men giving birth to younger versions of themselves in a neverending cycle of goo? Well, have we got a treat for you! Jessie Buckley is doing some amazing work carrying this one. What does it all mean? Who knows! But we're gonna talk it in circles until we come to some sort of horrifying conclusion that none of us are comfortable with or happy about. We love Joe Corallo. If you’ve ever spoken to the man for longer than three minutes, you’d quickly see why. Joe is engaging, kind, funny, and a hell of a talented writer and editor. Joe is the mastermind editor behind the Eisner-nominated anthology Mine! A celebration of liberty and freedom for all benefiting Planned Parenthood. (with the recent Supreme Court decision reversing Roe vs Wade this anthology is more important than ever) Joe is also the co-creator of the Comixology Originals series The Never-Ending Party is available now on Amazon! It’s free to read if you’re an Amazon Prime member. We chat with Joe about the do’s and don’ts of networking, how long should you wait to email that editor you met, and proper Ringo Award show attire. Heros Con 2022 Wrap up!We’d also like to wish a warm welcome to all of those fine folks who signed up for our newsletter at Heroes Con in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kevin and I love this show. Heroes holds a special place in my heart: This is the show where we met Walter and decided to embark on the creative journey that birthed Metalshark Bro. This is where Kevin and I met lifelong friends like Jamie Jones and Kyle Starks and cemented relationships with Drew Moss and Marc Deerling. This year proved to be no different. We made some new friends in Josh Hood, Jeremy Brooks, John Burgin, Sean Von Gorman, and David Byrne. That is to say, we met them IRL as the kids say. We also met two spunky go-getters Brie and Jennifer through our buddy JOSEPH SCHMALKE. We sold a lot of books, gave out some sage-like advice on the business of making comics, and set up future projects. We’d like to thank Shelton, Karla, and all of the staff that made Heroes another dynamite show. See you all next year. Currently Reading/Recently finished booksNorm MacDonald Based on a True Story: I’ve been wanting to read this for quite a while. It is proving to be worth the wait. Hitler’s American Freinds: A look at the many groups, people, and political organizations that we Nazi supporters in the United States during the war.The Many Lives of Laila Starr: This one goes without saying. It was fantastic. Bold storytelling and artwork. A masterpiece. Criminal Omnibus Vol1: Found it half off (half off!) at an Anime Con I took my daughter and her friends to. What a great book. Bitter Root Vol 1: A lot of fun. The writing is sharp and the artwork slaps. Not sure why I waited so long to hear this but man, it’s great. Cheers,The Word Bros!Shop the Word Bros Store! Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and comic super-fan Eric Breen to review David Michelinie and Bob Layton's Iron Man Vs Hulk story arc. David Michelinie's Iron Man comic book run is criminal underrated. One story that stands out is his 3-issue Iron Man Vs Hulk story. Brought to life by Bob Layton's impeccable line art. Iron man vs Hulk is a pulse pounding thrill-ride of a comic book. Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Monthly subscriptions receive bonus content and early access to some channel content. Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and comic super-fan Eric Breen to review classic original X-Men and discuss the career of Mark Millar. For many, Marvel's X-Men start at Len Wein's Giant-Size X-Men and Chris Claremont taking over Uncanny X-Men. Unfortunately, many skip over several great stories by legendary creators like Stan Lee. X-Men #49-#52, written by Arnold Drake, highlights what a fantastic team the original lineup is. It also features 2 issues illustrated by Jim Stranko and the first appearance of Erik the Red. Mark Millar made a name for himself with cutting edge, darker takes on the DC and Marvel Comics universes. His Red Son is perhaps the greatest Superman else worlds story ever told. Civil War, Old Man Logan and the Ultimate were mined for billions in the MCU. Along the way Millar bet on himself and started making creator owned work with some of the finest artist in comic book. The success of Kick Ass, Kingsman and other titles ultimately landed him a huge Netflix deal. Millar is now the blueprint for a new generation of comic book creators. Joe Corallo gives great podcast. Joe is also a very talented writer behind such awesome titles as She Said Destroy from Vault Comics and Becstar from mad Cave Studios. Joe is also a Ringo Award-winning editor. maybe you’ve heard of Kim &Kim, Lost On Planet Earth, or Dead Beats. Yep, was the editor on those books. We are honored to have such an amazing guest! Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and comic super-fan Eric Breen to review classic Green Lantern and discuss the career of Todd McFarlane. Steve Englehart and Joe Staton crafted many classic cosmic tales during their time on Green lantern. Unfortunately, GL #194-#198 seems to have fallen out of favor despite being amazing. Hal Jordan returns to the Corps, Guy screws everything up and the entire galaxy almost dies. What more could a comic fan ask for? Todd McFarlane is one of the most influential comic creators of his generation. Despite receiving over 700 no's he persevered and became a Spider-Man legend. He eventually became one of the founding members of Image Comics, creating their flagship character to this day. McFarlane could leave Spawn and comic books behind after his successes outside comics. But he remains because he loves comic books. Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Monthly subscriptions receive bonus content and early access to some channel content. Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and comic super-fan Eric Breen to review Marv Wolfman's Fantastic Four and discuss the career of Gil Kane. Marv Wolfman is one of the most adaptable comic writers in comic book history. Effortlessly moving between godlike superheroes, street level vigilantes and team books. In the lead up to Fantastic Four #200 Reed Richards lost his powers and the family had fallen apart. This story sees the family reform as Dr. Doom attempts to clone himself and solidify his power on Latveria. (00:00) Gil Kane is one of the most prolific comic book artists in the history of the industry. Gil Kane is most well known for his game changing illustrations in Green Lantern. But he had many memorable runs at DC and Marvel including Superman, Amazing Spider-Man, Detective Comics, Savage Sword of Conan and more. (46:49) Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and comic super-fan Eric Breen to review Batman: First Appearance of Jason Todd Robin and discuss the career of Roy Thomas. Batman writer Doug Moench doesn't get nearly the love he deserves. Unfortunately, during his Batman run DC Comics were overshadowed by Marvel Comics greatest era. Moench superbly weaves the story of Jason Todd becoming the new Robin through Detective Comics #532-#535 and batman #366-#368. It's an era and moment not often explored but most comic book readers are going to find a fantastic version of Batman as he finally accepts Jason as his new Robin (00:00) Roy Thomas is sometimes downplayed as a Stan Lee disciple. Thomas certainly had an enormous respect or even reverence for Stan Lee but was his own comic book creator and Editor-in-Chief. He's not only the most prolific Conan comic book writer ever but he pushed for Marvel to publish the first Star Wars comics before the movie debuted. He's wrote and edited essentially every character and series of consequence during his time as Marvel Comics. Some may call him “House Roy” but that downplays the risk taker and comic book visionary Roy Thomas is. (57:10) Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and comic super-fan Eric Breen to review Frank Miller's Daredevil and discuss the career of Louise Simonson. Frank Miller revitalized Daredevil with his gritty art and even grittier storytelling. He reintroduces the Kingpin to New York in Daredevil #170-#172, who quickly became Daredevil's signature villain. Daredevil the character and the comic book series would never be the same again. (00:00) Louise Simonson is a creative dynamo whether it be writer or editor. She was one of the driving forces behind the greatest comic book run of all-times, Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men. Weezie made major contributions as a writer as well: X-Factor's Apocalypse, New Mutants' Cable and Superman's Steel. No matter where she went Louise Simonson made a lasting impact felt in comic books to this day. (52:11) Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi.
