In today's episode I am excited to speak with Dan Cotter. Dan is currently an attorney at Howard & Howard in Chicago where he represents businesses at many different stages in corporate and transactional matters. He has a particular emphasis on privacy and cybersecurity law. But over the course of his 25-plus years as a lawyer, Dan has had a varied and in his words "eclectic" practice having practiced in different areas and different settings including but not limited to litigation, in-house counsel, outside general counsel, and working on behalf of both for profit and non-profit entities. More than that, Dan has been active in the legal community including doing pro bono work and serving as a past president of the Chicago Bar (and a current Mediator for that group). He also hosts a podcast called Podium and Panel and he is a prolific writer, writing a regular column called Cotter's Corner for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and a book titled the Chief Justices: The Seventeen Men of the Center Seat, Their Courts, and Their Times. Dan is a graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law (Go Dragons) where he was a night student but still was an editor on the law review graduated number 1 in his class and Monmouth College where he played football and was a radio DJ among other accolades (Go Fighting Scots). He's a longtime supporter of How I Lawyer and I am excited to get the chance to share his story.
Peter Golenbock has written more books about baseball than just about anybody. He's also written about basketball, football, stock car racing and popular culture. His account of the New York Yankees' 1978 World Championship season, The Bronx Zoo, written with Sparky Lyle, was a runaway best-seller. Coming on the heels of his own history of the Yankees, Dynasty, that book helped to establish Peter as one of the leading chroniclers of our national pastime. He would go on to collaborate on books with Yankee legends Graig Nettles (Balls), Billy Martin (Number 1) and Ron Guidry (Guidry), and to write comprehensive team histories of the Chicago Cubs (Wrigleyville), the New York Mets (Amazin'), the Brooklyn Dodgers (Bums) and the St. Louis Cardinals and Browns (The Spirit of St. Louis). His latest book, Whispers of the Gods: Tales from Baseball's Golden Age, Told by the Men Who Played It, collects the musings and reminiscences of some of the game's near-greats, and forgotten greats, in the tradition of Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of Their Times. Peter is also the co-author of a new memoir from former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine (Valentine's Way), as well as books written with Hollywood legend Tony Curtis (American Prince) and noted criminal defense attorney Jose Baez (Presumed Guilty), who successfully defended Casey Anthony in a sensation murder trial that captured worldwide attention. Join us as we talk with Peter about his unlikely path to collaborative writing, his lifelong fascination with the game of baseball, and his determination to get to the heart of every story he sets out to cover. In 1818, Army veteran John Cleves Symmes Jr. declared that the earth was hollow and proposed to lead an expedition to its interior. He promoted the theory in lectures and even won support on Capitol Hill. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Symmes' strange project and its surprising consequences. We'll also revisit age fraud in sports and puzzle over a curious customer. Intro: Grazing cattle align their bodies with magnetic north. The Conrad Cantzen Shoe Fund buys footwear for actors. After the lowest point in baseball history, the 1919 Chicago Black Sox gambling scandal, Babe Ruth stepped into the limelight and saved the sport. He became one of the primary figures who made the "Roaring 20s" roar, giving hope to millions of people during the Great Depression. His rise from an “incorrigible and vicious” youth—in an orphanage—to the first great sports icon is a story of effort, perseverance, and courage. As he put it, “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” He was so glorified by Americans that during World War II, enemy Japanese forces were trained to say one sentence in English: “To hell with Babe Ruth.” Subscribe in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening right now. The Supreme Court has only had seventeen men serve as Chief Justice. Chicago attorney Dan Cotter writes about all of them in The Chief Justices: The Seventeen Men of the Center Seat, Their Courts, and Their Times. While legal theory instructs lawyers to analyze the law and not the circumstances surrounding its creation, Cotter embraces an overall historical approach. Many Supreme Court justices have been defined by the landmark rulings they delivered. Cotter shows how some rulings, like Dre…

Author, Ian Kahanowitz, talks about his new book, "Baseball Gods in Scandal" . On September 25, 1919, a seemingly meaningless game was played between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians, a game that should have faded to a tiny line item on MLB’s historical ledger. But Herbert "Dutch" Leonard had other ideas, and nearly seven years later the at-times brilliant and always irratic left-hand pitcher presented letters written by Ty Cobb and Smoky Joe Wood to baseball's powers that be, implicating the Baseball Gods in the fixing of and wagering on that game. Leonard's actions set off a chain of accusations, denials, resignations, player transactions, and a power struggle at the top of baseball’s power hierarchy that would change the game forever. Baseball Gods in Scandal is three stories in one, and author Ian Kahanowitz tells them all with the art of a storyteller and the precision of an historian: The pervasiveness of gambling and crooked dealings in the early days of baseball, all the way through to the Black Sox Scandal The relationship between the affair’s complex protagonists—Cobb, Tris Speaker, Smoky Joe Wood, and Dutch Leonard—with detailed profiles and ample color from baseball’s rough-and-tumble Dead Ball Era The epic battle for control of the game between the long-time Czar of Baseball, Ban Johnson, and the game’s new sheriff in town, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who cared not to share even a whiff of power with anyone Capping off Baseball Gods in Scandal is a never-before-published interview with Smoky Joe Wood (told to Lawrence Ritter for The Glory of Their Times) in which Wood recounts a very different version of the affair from his original testimony. It is safe to say that had Wood's original testimony been consistent with his revised account, the fates of Baseball Gods Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker may have turned out very differently. https://www.summergamebooks.com/titles/upcoming/baseball-gods-in-scandal-ty-cobb,-tris-speaker,-and-the-dutch-leonard-affair-detail --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jim-campanis-jr/support
From the New York Times baseball columnist, an enchanting, enthralling history of the national pastime as told through the craft of pitching, based on years of archival research and interviews with more than three hundred people from Hall of Famers to the stars of today The baseball is an amazing plaything. We can grip it and hold it so many different ways, and even the slightest calibration can turn an ordinary pitch into a weapon to thwart the greatest hitters in the world. Each pitch has its own history, evolving through the decades as the masters pass it down to the next generation. From the earliest days of the game, when Candy Cummings dreamed up the curveball while flinging clamshells on a Brooklyn beach, pitchers have never stopped innovating. In K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches, Tyler Kepner traces the colorful stories and fascinating folklore behind the ten major pitches. Each chapter highlights a different pitch, from the blazing fastball to the fluttering knuckleball to the slippery spitball. Infusing every page with infectious passion for the game, Kepner brings readers inside the minds of combatants sixty feet, six inches apart. Filled with priceless insights from many of the best pitchers in baseball history including twenty-two Hall of Famers–from Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, and Nolan Ryan to Greg Maddux, Mariano Rivera, and Clayton Kershaw–K will be the definitive book on pitching and join such works as The Glory of Their Times and Moneyball as a classic of the genre. ABOUT THE AUTHOR TYLER KEPNER started covering baseball as a teenager, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Timesin 1989. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship, then covered the Angels for the Press-Enterprise (Riverside, Calif.) and the Mariners for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He joined The New York Times in 2000, covering the Mets for two seasons, the Yankees for eight, and serving as the national baseball writer since 2010. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Author/historian Bill Young (John Tortes “Chief” Meyers: A Baseball Biography) returns to the podcast to discuss the life and legacy of one of Major League Baseball’s most intriguing personalities from the sport’s “dead-ball era” of the 1900s/10s. The sturdy, hard-hitting battery-mate (and eventual vaudeville stage partner) of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Matthewson – as well as a fixture in some of legendary New York Giants manager John McGraw’s most successful teams – “Chief” Meyers was also one of the few true Native Americans to ever star in professional baseball, overcoming enormous prejudicial obstacles along the way. Unlike other Native American players who eschewed their tribal identities to escape bias and ridicule, Meyers—a member of the Santa Rosa Band of the Cahuilla Tribe of California—remained proud of his heritage, and endeared himself to fans and the press with his disarming, accessible and uniquely erudite personality. After retiring from the game in 1920, Meyers quietly returned to his roots to become a tribal leader, only to be rediscovered by a new generation of fans and scholars in 1966 with the publication of Lawrence Ritter’s acclaimed oral history of the early game, The Glory of Their Times.
