During the early 70's as I walked to school alone one day in Thunder Bay Ontario, burned into my mind was the day I was almost Kidnapped. Through many years of learning healing I've been able to move past it.

Tonight's special guest is Andrea Kelly, skip of Team New Brunswick and bronze medalist at this year's Scotties Tournament of Hearts that was held in Thunder Bay Ontario. Andrea gives us a quick description of how curling works and how many players are on a team. In 2005 Andrea and her junior team won the provincials and went on to the nationals that were held in Fredericton, the support Andrea and her team were getting was incredible. Her team played in the finals against team Alberta and with the help of a wonderful shot and some extra sweeping, they ended up pulling it out and winning the gold medal, amazing. They ended up representing Canada that year at the World Juniors in Pinerolo, Italy and ended up winning the bronze that year. We talk about how the team has changed over the years and how life sometimes just happens. Having good dynamics and really enjoying each other's company helps in having a good quality team and we chat about that. This year was Andrea's 10th time representing New Brunswick at the Scotties and next year is going to be her 11th and we have all the confidence in the world in Andrea. Andrea tells us about how she stays motivated and the amazing things that come out of being involved in curling, it is her zone. We can tell by chatting with Andrea just how driven and determined she really is. Loves being busy and always trying new things and for the last few years, she has taken up cycling. We talk about the results at the Scotties for team Andrea and we discuss how it all went down. Lots of wonderful stories from Andrea and it's so wonderful to talk with Andrea and see how much she loves Curling and her positivity to always get better. In this episode, Gayle and Joyce are joined by Dr. Lee Kurisko, a Canadian radiologist who left practice in Thunder Bay Ontario to pursue a career stateside after becoming disillusioned with Canada's centralized approach to healthcare delivery. His firsthand knowledge of waiting lines, physician and staff shortages, and outdated imaging equipment forced a change of heart from the great confidence he initially felt in Canada's healthcare system. He soon discovered greater efficiency and less rationed care in the U.S. and while our current system is not without challenges, he feels it is far superior to Canada's system. Canadians, Dr. Kurisko explained, are indoctrinated into the notion that government should provide healthcare and that U.S. citizens are being left in the cold because the government does not directly arrange and pay for all medical treatment. He shares how the Canadian cultural ethos takes considerable pride in the government's role in healthcare. Indeed, surveys suggest that Canadians remain very proud of their system even though approximately 17 percent lack access to a primary care physician. This ethos is even more puzzling when you consider that in Canada, a primary care referral is needed in order to receive specialty care; those who do not have a primary care physician also do not have access to specialty care in Canada. Dr. Kurisko's move to the United States was in part driven by exhaustion where he and his two colleagues daily confronted 10 to 14 hours of workload meant for 13 radiologists. He states that because governments are constrained by budgets (vs. profits seen with private enterprise) – it leads to a severe and perverse form of rationing which is not only impractical but immoral as well. The view that healthcare is a right necessarily implies that medical providers' freedoms can be curtailed; after all, someone must provide the discounted or free service that another person claims a right to receive. The inherent complexity seen in healthcare pleads the case for bottom-up solutions that lead to less rationed, better quality care. He suggests that because healthcare is so important it behooves us to seriously consider limiting the role of government. Dr. Kurisko advocates for an uninterrupted doctor-patient relationship without arbitrary price controls. He suggests that a better value proposition is possible if we embrace transparent pricing that facilitates the delivery of a desired service – just as we do with other goods and services provided in the United States. In that sense, healthcare is not special. Our conversation touched on “proper” insurance which only covers large, unexpected losses and preferably is purchased individually and not through an employer. Over-insurance (that is, using insurance for routine, inexpensive care) causes excess testing and other excessive utilization, which of course contributes to out of control spending. Lastly, he emphasizes the need for supply side solutions associated with charity care to address our nations indigent patient population. How to induce or layer such change within our current system vexed with bureaucracies and vested interests, remains to be seen. But it is a challenge we should not shrink from in light of Medicare insolvency concerns and ever-growing healthcare demand that continues to eat up a larger percentage of our GDP. At least we have greater clarity on what to avoid as we promote a more bottom-up approach to healthcare reform, thanks to Dr. Kurisko's insights about the problems in the Canadian healthcare system.

New in this update:BC's financial performance for the first quarter as expectedBC's financial performance in the first quarter of this year has confirmed what was predicted. The projected deficit will be just under $13 billion dollars for this fiscal year. The Minister of Finance says it's the result of declines in tax revenues and unprecedented spending on pandemic relief programs. BC's unemployment rate declined slightly to 10.7 per cent in August but remains twice as high as what it was before the pandemic began. Carole James says the hardest hit groups are youth, women and those employed in the service sectors. The Minister says she's optimistic about recovery, but expects it will need a boost from government.”We've seen couple of months where the numbers have been very good. To see over 60 per cent of the jobs return that were lost in February is a very good sign, but again we continue to see tourism, accommodation, those areas very hard hit when it comes to the pandemic. So we will be looking and we are looking at all sectors including the hosp sector as part of the economic recovery plan and you'll hear about that shortly. That will be coming shortly."– Minister of Finance, Carole James.James says there will be an announcement next week, on how BC will spend $1 and a half billion dollars for economic recovery.Man accused of killing Nanaimo teen charged with first degree murderThe man accused of killing a Nanaimo teenager three and a half years ago has now been charged with first degree murder. Sixteen year old Makayla Chang went missing on St Patrick's Day 2017. Her body was found two months later but police will not say where. Fifty-nine year old Steven Bacon was interviewed by police back in 2017 and his home was searched twice before Chang's body was found. Her family has said he had an unhealthy relationship with her. A Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson says Bacon was arrested on unrelated charges one year ago in Thunder Bay Ontario. Constable Gary O'Brien says finding, holding and charging Bacon is the result of cooperation among police, local authorities and members of the public."There was over 200 police officers working on this investigation and it spanned from Nanaimo all the way across Canada with not only RCMP officers, but municipal agencies and investigators working on this file, so it was tremendous cooperation. And without that cooperation, this first degree murder charge would never have been laid."– Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, Constable Gary O'Brien. There is no word yet when Bacon will make his first court appearance.Large fire burning south of NanaimoA large fire is burning at the Schnitzer Steel facility south of Nanaimo. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is reporting fire departments from Ladysmith, Duncan, Crofton, Cedar, Sahtlam, North Oyster and Cranberry are all assisting. Heavy machinery is being used to pull wreckage away and allow the crews to get to the fire. A helicopter is also at the scene and assisting in battling the blaze.

Thunder Bay sits on the coast of Lake Superior just north the Michigan border. It boasts a population of around 108,000. It is actually an amalgamation of former cities Port Arthur and Fort William. On January 1st, 1970 the city of Thunder Bay was officially born. Just off the coast on the US side of the border lies Isle Royale. It’s now a state park full of hiking trails and campgrounds. Surrounding this island are a number of shipwrecks. One of them was called the SS Algoma. Although recent studies suggest that ‘rooming-in’ is associated with a decreased need for pharmacological treatment and length of stay for infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), more research is required to determine the effective components and short-term and long-term NAS outcomes, including risks. Gord Ellis is an angler, hunter, guide and outdoor columnist who hangs his hat in Thunder Bay Ontario. With over 1,000 published articles to his name and over 20 awards for his writing, he's more than well-known along the north-west shore of Superior. More than that though, he's respected for his conservation ethic and willingness to share his passion and hard-earned local knowledge to both young and old alike. Lawrence Gunther and his guide dog Moby met up with Gord on a beautiful April day to fish for Steelhead on three area ice-cold rivers. While warming up, Gord and Lawrence took a few minutes toreflect on the role of social media as a tool for sharing localknowledge and observations in ways that build informal networks of citizen scientists committed to the conservation of natural resources, this week on Blue Fish Radio.
Eric Weller is an educator based in Thunder Bay Ontario. He teaches film studies at the school he originally took the course at. Before that, Eric owned and operated a record label called "Meathead Records". the label was started to support his favourite band "Head Cramp", one of Thunder Bays greatest exports in my opinion. Eric put out several compilations and albums to help the Thunder Bay scene as well as bands all over Canada. If Frank from Crocks & Rolls was the grand daddy of Thunder Bay punk and indie music, Eric is surely the uncle! A great catch up with an old dear friend. Brought to you in part by Audible.com. In June 2016 Walmart Canada announced that they believe interchange fees charged by Visa are too high, so, starting with their three stores in Thunder Bay Ontario, they would no longer accept Visa cards at their stores in Canada. As of September, 2016 Walmart has not implemented this policy outside of Thunder Bay, presumably so they can continue to negotiate with Visa for lower fees. On this edition of Debt Free in 30 we answer the question: what's the real reason that Walmart doesn't want to accept Visa credit cards at their stores? The answer is not as simple as "Visa's fees are too high". Walmart is the largest retailer in the world, so with their bargaining power they are probably paying the lowest Visa fees of any retailer.
