I've been so looking forward to sharing my conversation with Richard Van Camp, whose childhood obsession with the works of Stephen King (and so many other iconic authors!) was a force behind BEAST, the 30th book of Richard's 30 years in publishing. BEAST is the kind of book that his younger self would have wanted to read, although I think readers of all ages will appreciate this story blending horror, Indigenous tradition, teenage yearning, friendship, adventure, and a kickass ‘80s soundtrack. Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. With his characteristic exuberance, Richard talks to me about how he used to have ration his Stephen King reading back when he was a teenager, about how King's IT was the book that spoke to his soul, and about how he's learned from King's novels how to up the stakes for his characters (and their readers). He also tells me how the foundation of BEAST is an actual peace treaty between the Tłįchǫ and the Chipewyan peoples, and how he hopes this novel inspires readers to consider the peace that needs upholding in their own worlds and their responsibilities toward that. Returning to his favourite setting of Fort Simmer, Northwest Territories, Richard Van Camp brings his exuberant style to a captivating teen novel that blends the supernatural with 1980s-era nostalgia to reflect on friendship, tradition and forgiveness. For as long as Lawson can remember, his life in a small Northwest Territories town has revolved around “the Treaty” between the Dogrib and the Chipewyan, set down centuries ago to prevent the return of bloody warfare between the two peoples. On the Dogrib side, Lawson and his family have done their best to keep the pact alive with the neighbouring Cranes, a family with ancestral ties to a revered Chipewyan war chief. But even as Lawson and his father dutifully tidy the Cranes' property as an act of respect, their counterparts offer little more than scowls and derision in return, despite the fact that both families are responsible for protecting the treaty.Worse still, it seems that one of the Cranes' boys is doing all he can to revive the old conflict: Silver, fresh out of jail, has placed himself in the service of a cruel, ghoulish spirit bent on destroying the peace. Now it's up to Isaiah Valentine, a Cree Grass Dancer, Shari Burns, a Metis psychic, and Lawson Sauron, a Dogrib Yabati—or protector—to face what Silver Cranes has called back. This latest feat of storytelling magic by celebrated author Richard Van Camp blends sharply observed realism and hair-raising horror as it plays out against a 1980s-era backdrop replete with Platinum Blonde songs and episodes of Degrassi Junior High. Unfolding in the fictional town of Fort Simmer—the setting of previous Van Camp stories—Beast delivers a gripping, spirited tale that pits the powers of tradition against the pull of a vengeful past.Born in Fort Smith, NWT, bestselling author Richard Van Camp is a member of the Dogrib (Tłįchǫ) Dene Nation. A graduate of the En'owkin Centre's writing program in Penticton, BC, he completed his BFA in writing at the University of Victoria and received an MFA in creative writing from the University of British Columbia. His work has won many awards and honours, among them the Blue Metropolis First Peoples Literary Prize and the title of Storyteller of the Year from the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers. Rocks is the new feature film directed by Sarah Gavron with a screenplay by Theresa Ikoko and Claire Wilson. Writer Niellah Arboine reviews the film which is set in Hackney with an ensemble cast of largely non-professional actors, and it tells the story of a teenage Londoner nicknamed Rocks who takes responsibility for her little brother Emmanuel in an attempt to stop them both from being taken into care, supported by a chaotic but loving group of friends. Poet Phoebe Stuckes discusses her first collection, Platinum Blonde, which gives us a glimpse of the life of a lively young woman today. She is only 24, but Phoebe Stuckes is a seasoned poet and performer, winner of the Foyle Young Poets Award - four times - she has also been Barbican Young Poet and the Ledbury Poetry Festival’s young poet-in-residence. Troubled Blood is the title of JK Rowling’s latest novel, written under her crime writing pseudonym Robert Galbraith. And it’s generated something of a troubled reaction so far as reviewers and then social media reacted to the inclusion of a character who cross dresses. Alex Clark joins Front Row to explain. It turns out Jennifer wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to Jean Harlow. Since our last episode Jennifer read Harlow's one and only novel, Today is Tonight, and...goodness.  There's a lot to talk about right there.  Today is Tonight is a rare book, long out of print, so there isn't a lot of information available on the Internet about it.  In tonight's episode we take a little stroll through that novel, lingering around some of the more embarrassing passages.  Jennifer then profiles Harlow's signature piece of jewelry--and a super cute item of Harlow's that was up for auction a few years ago.  And, of course, there's Saratoga, Jean Harlow's last film.  Jennifer couldn't bring herself to watch it for our last episode ("It's just too sad!"), but she grabbed a box of tissues and watched it from start to finish.  Would you believe Harlow's last line in that film--or any film--is "goodbye"?  We say farewell, too, but not before Jennifer shares her impressions of Jean Harlow's final romantic comedy.  We wrap it all up with Jennifer's Favorite Thing of the Week.Episode 8 - More with Ms. Harlow Show NotesCheck out the Circa19xx Pinterest Page, where you'll find the show board for this episodeMeet the podcasterVisit Circa 19xx LandThe Circa-19xx Facebook Page

Fine vehicle for Harlow, if you can handle the colonialistic lens of thefilm.Dinner at Eight (1933) - star-studded cast including John and Lionel Barrymore. Harlow steals the show.Libeled Lady (1936) - She acted with her real-life fiance William Powell (famously of the The Thin Manseries), though in the movie she conceded him to Myrna Loy. False rumors about Harlow:1) Jean's 2nd husband committed suicide because he was impotent/Jean's husband was murdered:Neither Jean or the studio had anything to do with the death of her 2nd husband, Paul Bern. Gary Borden is in the house!! I knew Gary was an amazingly talented musician with a hustle like no other. What I didn’t know about Gary was what an incredibly kind soul he is. From our first conversation on the phone, I knew we were going to have a great discussion on creativity, the entertainment industry, process, and matters of the heart. One of my favourite moments of the interview was listening to Gary talk about his brother and how he valued their relationship and considered him to be his mentor as a musician. Truly inspiring and heartwarming episode on Cue To Cue this week! Come join the conversation!  Have a listen! A little About Gary: Born in Thunder Bay Ontario, Canada, Gary was the youngest of three children. His family later moved to Dryden Ontario, where he attended Dryden High School. “If I'm going to affect change in any way, the best way to affect change is to amass some form of money to execute those changes and I feel if you're doing positive change, something that's going to help people...then you are leaving the world a bit of a better place.” – Mark Holmes Born in Mansfield England, Mark Holmes is a Canadian rock star icon who together with his bandmates Sergio Galli, Kenny MacLean and Chris Steffler formed the legendary ‘80s band Platinum Blonde. From 1982-83 they performed over 200 nights together as a Police tribute band, firmly securing their spot on the university and club circuit. This environment gave them the chance to write and rehearse their own music, while immersed in performing the music they loved. In 1983 they signed a recording deal with CBS which shot their career into high gear and captured a new wave audience with hit songs like “Doesn't Really Matter”, “Situation Critical” and “Standing in the Dark”. With this recording deal, they could also embrace a new art form that was becoming imperative to the success of recording artists: music videos. With high rotation on Canada's MuchMusic network, their signature look and their hit music, Mark, Sergio, Kenny, and Chris rode the new wave movement to its pinnacle. A musician first, Mark is ever evolving, and not interested in riding on past success. He firmly believes we must keep moving forward and evolving to remain on the cutting edge. Mark stays relevant and interested in the progress of music through writing new music, producing, touring, and releasing new albums with Platinum Blonde in 2012 called Now or Never and a solo album. Embracing another side of the business, Mark is the co-founder of the Mod Club nightclub in Toronto, and together with his son he is involved with raising capital to support start ups and emerging business. Mark has no interest in retirement or resting on his laurels. He has verve, tenacity and heart and all three are leading the way.    Show Notes [01:57] Patrick introduces his next guest, rock ‘n roll legend and entrepreneur: Mark Holmes [04:00] Mark and Patrick rock and roll into Mark's elevator pitch, which spans from music to finance and start ups. [06:44] Mark expands a little on what he's up to on the finance side of his well-rounded pitch and how markets must adjust when new and improved products or ways of doing business arise. [09:36] Broadening that conversation, Mark gives examples of how innovations in business can generate more business ideas to piggyback them, thus creating its own new industry. Similarly, as musicians progress, they start creating cutting edge styles and ideas, which open up new sounds and experiences for listeners. [11:27] Keeping himself current and leading edge lets Mark take his ideas, research them and put the winning ones into action. Things change; we have to adapt. [13:33] Mark talks about a trading app he's advocating which is another technology that keeps him on the leading edge and current. [14:59] Mark explains how he got interested in one of his newest start ups in stem cell cosmetics. He sees the opportunity to not only help other people but leave the world a better place by being in contribution. [18:39] Going back to Mark's beginnings from Great Britain to Canada, he talks about getting started with his rock band Platinum Blonde in the ‘80s, the challenges of the industry in that era and the warm embrace he received from Canada. [24:29] How the lure of a James Bond style movie he saw as a boy became the catalyst for Mark's dream lifestyle. His outlet of choice was to become a rock star. So, he went ahead and did that. [27:33] A little talent didn't hurt so as Mark progressed with his song writing and singing, he also learned to play the guitar in short order and started his first band. While not an instant hit, Mark continued to learn and grow, all without knowing how to read music. He created by ear.

Kelly wrote Modern Streamers which was a game changer in the streamer game back in the 1980's. Kelly notes his second book - Cripples and Spinners, which doesn't get talked as much about because of the popularity of the streamer book. The Zoo Cougar was Kelly's first big fly that was the start of a big change with streamers.  Click the link above to watch Kelly tie it. Jim Teeny helped Kelly produce the first lines specifically for streamers back in the day. I note the Gary Borger podcast where he discusses being there in the early days where nymphing was frowned upon. Roman Moser started the beadhead madness back in the day. We talk about Gary Lafontaine and how he was probably 40 years ahead of his time in fly fishing.  Here's an old youtube video with Gary. The Peanut Envy is another one of Kelly's popular patterns with a funny porn name. Joe Brooks had the Platinum Blonde fly pattern.  Kelly wasn't the first person to come up with these types of names. Ray Schmidt was noted as a big Michigan guide. I interviewed John Gierach in this episode and I noted that I received some negative feedback for not going deep into fly fishing. We talk about the Fly Fisherman magazine article on the 50 most influential people in fly fishing.  Kelly was not on the list and we talk about his take on this. John Randolph was the editor of Fly Fisherman magazine. Kelly describes his youtube channel in a few words.  He didn't listen to the experts on youtube and went with his one process. Wax on Wax off with the Karate Kid was the analogy that Kelly used to talk about his favorite fly tying tip. The Frank Moore interview was noted in comparison to Kelly's age. Here is a link to the Q and A section or go onto youtube and leave a comment. You can find Kelly at the SlideInn.com or on youtube here. Conclusion with Kelly Galloup Crazy value from Kelly Gallop on streamers and the history and his connection in fly fishing.  He talks about how the spey craze started, where the porn star names came from and the exact steps to get into the streamer game. So many good tips in this one.  What was your favorite part of the episode?  I loved when Kelly talked about bringing in the youth and all of the great people out there. What I don’t know about the Canadian music video scene could fill a half an hour or more… as rock ‘n’ roll historian Christopher Ward is about to discover. Ward has published a charming new oral history of MuchMusic—a Canadian take on MTV for my clueless fellow Americans. The book—Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic, The Nation’s Music Station—takes us behind-the-scenes at the creation of the video music network where the only rule was, “You can do anything you want on air, just don’t spend any money.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Being live at MuchMusic was like improv comedy. People love to see you fail and figure out how you're going to get out of it." Canadian music stars of the 1980s who blew up around the world—thanks in no small part to MuchMusic—included Bryan Adams, Corey Hart and Loverboy. And it also made mostly local guitar heroes out of Platinum Blonde, Gowan, the Spoons and Glass Tiger. Unless you’re a native of the Great White North, you’re probably wondering what Ward’s connection to all this might be, right? Well, he was Canada’s first VJ, or video disc jockey. But unlike their American counterparts who precorded all of their patter between music videos, Ward and his cohorts worked live. Ward got his start as an entertainer as a member of Second City Touring Company, where he became friends with future SNL comedian Mike Myers and was Myers’ sidekick on the original “Wayne’s World” before Dana Carvey brought life to Garth. He has also written songs for Diana Ross, Wynona Judd, The Backstreet Boys and Alannah Myles, for whom he wrote the #1 hit, “Black Velvet.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Mike Myers calls me the 'entertainment survivalist' because we would go on the road together and I was prepared. I would bring a sandwich and I would have cold beer stashed in the van. I was ready to cope. I took pity on him and brought extra sandwich, extra beer, and a splitter for the headphones. And we both loved The Clash." From the first Canadian VJ (and Trent alumnus) Christopher Ward, Is This Live? captures the pure fun and rock ’n’ roll rebellion of the early years of MuchMusic television. Christopher Ward joins us by Skype to talk about his latest book. We talked to Ward last year in a wide ranging interview about his career as an award-winning songwriter, music journalist, and author. You can find that podcast here. But when we heard that he was working on a book about the early days of MuchMusic, we made him promise that he'd come back to talk to us about it.  He graciously agreed. From Penguin Random House:On August 31, 1984, the Nation’s Music Station launched, breaking ground as the Wild (Canadian) West of television—live, gloriously unpredictable, seat-of-the-pants TV, delivered fresh daily. The dream child of TV visionary Moses Znaimer, and John Martin, the maverick creator of The New Music, Much was live and largely improvised, and an entire generation of Canadians grew up watching the VJs and embraced the new music that became the video soundtrack of our lives. The careers of Canadian legends like Blue Rodeo, Corey Hart, Jane Siberry, Bryan Adams, Platinum Blonde, Glass Tiger, Colin James, the Parachute Club, Honeymoon Suite, Barenaked Ladies, Maestro Fresh Wes and Sloan were launched when Much brought them closer to their fans. Much also gave us international acts (Duran, Duran, Tina Turner, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Madonna, Motorhead, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and covered the second wave of music activism with events like Live Aid and the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! tour. Ranging from Toronto’s iconic studio at 299 Queen Street West, to Vancouver’s MuchWest, MuchMusic’s programming travelled across Canada and connected the Canadian music scenes in an unprecedented way. With stories of the bands, the music, the videos, the specialty shows, the style and the improvisational approach to daily broadcast life at Much, Is This Live? is told by the people who were there—the colourful cast of on-air VJs, the artists who found their way into our living rooms of the nation as never before, and the people behind the cameras. As our tour guide to the first decade at MuchMusic Christopher Ward delivers a full-on dose of pop culture nostalgia from the 1980s and ’90s, when the music scene in Canada changed forever.

Greg & Brett are joined by Brent Fitz, a Winnipeg musician who now lives in Las Vegas, he's played with Slash, Vince Neil, Alice Cooper, Theory Of A Deadman, Econoline Crush, Kenny Sheilds from Streetheart, The Guess Who, just to name a few. Even though he doesn't live in Winnipeg anymore, he loves this city, and loves the Jets, so much so that he was recruited by Bobby Hull himself to join the Bobby Hull Foundation. He's in the city for the Heritage Classic this weekend -- and that's part 1 of our interview. Part 2... is the announcement that he's formed a band called TOQUE, alongside Todd Kerns from Slash's band, and Cory Cherko, who is Shania Twain's guitar player. Together they play covers of Canadian rock bands that influenced their careers, including April Wine, Chilliwack, Harlequin, Honeymoon Suite, and Platinum Blonde. They're doing a show on New Year's Eve at the Palomino Club, and will soon release 'Toque - Give 'Er Volume 1'.

As part of the publicity campaign for his film Hell’s Angels, Howard Hughes made Jean Harlow a star, branding her “The Platinum Blonde.” But after Hell’s Angels, Hughes couldn’t figure out what to do with Harlow, so she ended up signing a contract with MGM, at the urging of Paul Bern, who became Harlow’s new impresario and husband. Despite the fact that Louis B. Mayer had dismissed her as a “floozy”, Harlow had five years of super stardom at MGM. But during that time, Bern died under mysterious circumstances — as did Harlow herself, in 1937, at the age of 26.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
