I met Bob Watters at the 2nd crew meetup aid station at Cruel Jewel this year and then again saw him at the turnaround point.  He was crewing and pacing his son and I was crewing my friend Jamie.  I noticed him wearing that awesome Southern States 200 buckle and introduced myself.  I wanted to record a recap for the podcast and then fate would have it that my friend Amber peer-pressured me into running it this year.  So, selfishly I was looking for tips.  Bob is an accomplished ultra-runner having finished Pinhoti 9 times and other challenging races such as Blood Rock 100 and No Business.  He was also the state champ in cowboy style shooting a few years ago, hench the nickname "cowboy" which came from me, not him.  I think you will enjoy getting to know Bob and the Alabama races a little better and I bet you'll be wanting to check some of them out.    Links below.  Enjoy!Southeastern Trail RunsSouthern States 200 - March 19, 2025 (ultrasignup.com)Daufuskie Island 100 Mile Ultra – Run 4 a Reason's Rough Runners (roughrunnersr4r.com)Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves (squirrelsnutbutter.com)code = TimberfriendsSt. Pete Running Company Florida | Top 50 Running Store (stpeterunningco.com)code = MWM20Home - PlayOn Reliefcode = martygardner15@pacertravel727-433-2385 - pathcrx@aol.comMiles With Marty Podcast | Home base for the ultra-running community | Patreon

Warren Ham Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What an absolutely delightful sit down with multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Warren Ham. As much as I was blown away seeing him do his thing (s) Live with Ringo and his All Starr Band, singing lead, background vocals, playing flute, sax, harmonica, keyboards, and percussion, I'm exhausted just typing it, let alone watching him work the entire multi-level stage, I was equally impressed chatting with him. What an engaging, fun, open, self-effacing, lovely, ridiculously talented, accessible, human. Warren started us with his family's gospel group, recording his first album at 5. What a slacker! Country music and mandolin with his guitar-playing older brother Bill followed. While Warren sang and played harmonica with every garage band in Fort Worth, Bill was playing on TV on The Sonny & Cher Show, paving the way for things to come. Bloodrock and three albums followed and then dueting with Cher for three years in Vegas and meeting… well, pretty much everyone. From Vegas to Kansas- the band not the place, great story there, and a whole lot more instruments added to Warren's repertoire, plus stadiums…Donna Summer, on and off for years, Amy Grant, Toto, another great story there, Olivia Newton-John, lots of great stories there, including a couple about a guy named Travolta. Always professional, there were years of consumption, and then 15 years ago, sobriety, when Warren claims, his life shifted for the better in all ways. A fortuitous Facebook message led to a Beatle, he's spent ten years with Ringo, his greatest gig of all, doing double duty with Luke on Toto, too. There's a 42-year marriage, in rock years beyond miraculous, and two amazing kids, check out son Robert's wonderful short film on Warren, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muxaj-HOGBE, daughter Rachel Talbot has over a million followers on YouTube - the apples don't fall far… It's stunning to consider not only all that Warren can do, and does, but also that he does it all, brilliantly. And, he can dance. And act. Is there anything this man can't do? Odds are crap on that. Folge direkt herunterladen

During the early '70s, Warren and his brother Bill formed The Ham Brothers Band and included Ira Wilkes on bass, Red Young on piano and organ and Dahrell Norris on drums. The group recorded for Texas producer Huey P. Meaux. Despite critical acclaim for the work, the album never made it in the marketplace. It was soon taken out of print. In 1978 The Ham Brothers band had replaced Wilkes and Young with Bob Parr and Ken Rarrick, both from the acclaimed jazz education program at the University of North Texas. Later that same year, David Gates, of Bread fame, hired the Ham Brothers to tour as part of Bread. The act was then billed as David Gates and Bread. A year later pop diva Cher secured the services of the same band. When Cher recorded the project album Black Rose, Warren joined the band for the recording and the subsequent supporting tour. In his early years, Ham was a vocalist and played the reeds for the Fort Worth, Texas based Bloodrock (1972–74). Ham appeared on the last two Bloodrock albums: Passage and Whirlwind Tongues. Warren Ham has also toured with Kansas in the John Elefante era (in 1982, played additional keyboards, flute, alto and soprano saxophones, harmonica and backing vocals), Toto (1986-1988, and since 2017), and Donna Summer (1983). He toured with Olivia Newton-John in 2006 as an instrumentalist and vocalist performing John Travolta's part with Newton-John on her No. 1 Grease hit, "You're The One That I Want", as well as backing vocals. When Kerry Livgren left Kansas to form his own Christian rock band AD, Ham went with him as the new band's lead singer. Ham appeared on the first, second and fourth of AD's four albums: 1) Timeline 2) Art of the State and 3) Prime Mover. Ham was a featured vocalist and instrumentalist for the Maranatha! Promise Band - the worship band for the Promise Keepers men's movement put together by Maranatha! Music from Promise Keepers' incarnation in 1993 to 1996. He appeared on their 1993 album, Face to Face with the song "This Is What I Believe", and on their 1996 album, Break Down the Walls, on the song "Send Me" along with Steven Jackson and Leonard Tucker. He was also a part of the live touring version of the Promise Band for the 1995 Promise Keepers conference season where he played harmonica, saxophone, trumpet, flute, and other wind instruments along with backup vocals. This was documented in the VHS video and CD "Live Worship With The Maranatha! Promise Band" where he most famously played an intro to "Man Of The Spirit, Man Of The Word". Since the demise of AD, he has released solo recordings in the contemporary Christian music genre "Come on Children" and is the author of Beginning Blues/Rock Harmonica (ISBN 0-8256-1154-7). From 1996 to 2000, Ham toured as part of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Warren Ham also appeared as an integral member of Donna Summer's live band on her 2008 tour (having first appeared as part of her 1983 touring group) supporting her 2008 release Crayons. Warren Ham toured with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. In the mid-eighties and from 2017 on, he tours with Toto.

Greetings & Salutations, Slackers! This week is about failure. Or more specifically, my failure to make my earliest dreams come true - to be the lead singer in a rock band.Of course I was technically the lead singer in many bands, but my childhood dream was to sing professionally. After a particularly piss poor showing during a recording session with legendary producer Kramer - of @ShimmyDisc Records fame - I all but gave up on that dream. With the exception of a few self produced demos, I moved away from music and let the dream die.Now here I am in middle age wondering what kind of example does that set for my kids? I mean, if I could say with reasonable confidence I gave it my all and still didn't “make it”, then I think that would serve as a fine example - but quitting the first time I face any adversity - ridiculous. Can I redeem myself? Is it ever too late to conquer a fear, or to accomplish a long held goal? Is this a mid - midlife crisis?!Oh, and I share with you all how I almost cut my finger off with a chainsaw!

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Tara Dower. Tara shares her last 13 months which was amazing and very successful. Here is her list; attempted Benton MacKaye FKT in September of 2021. Injured myself badly. One month later I raced my first 100 miler called Uwharrie 100. Won for women. Raced my second 100 in Alabama called Blood Rock and came in 2nd overall behind Jeff Browning. Umstead 100 in April was my next 100 and placed 3rd women. Cruel Jewel was the next month in May and got 2nd woman. One month later went for the Benton MacKaye FKT again and smashed the overall record with sub 5 days. I think it was 4 days and 21 hrs and some change. Went on a little vacation to California a month later and finished backpacking the JMT. Started training for Run Rabbit and working hard to prepare for CO with different methods. The race went well and placed 2nd woman behind Annie Hughes with a huge 6 mile push at the end where I ran sub 8 minute miles and passed #2 woman. Whoa right?! also check out Tara's YouTube channel. Eventually that led to some FKT's and now she's transitioning into ultramarathons. With a big win at Blood Rock 100 this year, second to the man himself, Jeff Browning, she has officially put her stamp on the world of trail running. Keep your eyes on this woman, she's moving fast and she has big goals. DO BIG THINGS Tara! The lads fired up the time machine for the latest episode in their quest to find the greatest rock album of all time, journeying back to the farthest limits of the Enter Sadmen Podverse. 1970 is the arbitrary stepping off point for the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Hall of Fame, so it was no surprise when the Tico Torres Tombola of Topics and Themes finally cranked it out as the focus of episode 37. The boys went off in search of musical riches and reconvened on WhatsApp a week before the show was recorded to share their discoveries. Mark, it turned out, went more or less mainstream, breaking the elasticity of time to offer up Climbing!, the debut album from Mountain (if you discount the Leslie West solo album Mountain, which is now largely viewed as the spiritual start of Mountain's recording career). Steve went deep into the unknown and unearthed a then much admired but long since forgotten self-titled debut from US prog rockers Bloodrock. And Richard emerged clutching the better-known and eponymously-titled calling card from Lucifer's Friend, featuring future Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton, the only Brit in an otherwise all-German line-up. Get your bell bottoms ready - 'cos this one's a banger ...

This episode of Food for Thought is an engaging, entertaining and insightful conversation with elite ultra-runner, Jeff Browning (aka Broncobilly), winner of The 2019 Bear 100 in 19:06 and Marc Sanderson who finished 173rd out of 204 finishers in 34:55 yielding a 360 degree view of what it's like to run a 100 Mile trail mountain ultra. This year's version of 'The Bear' lived up to it's name with some of the worst conditions in the history of the race.  To give perspective Jeff's time reflects not only his level of ability and training but also the simple fact he was fortunate to outrun the weather whereas Mark was caught in it.....so were some of Jeff's clients whom he coaches. A lot of time is spent on the huge challenges faced by middle and back of the pack runners and the enduring grit that makes up the sport of ultrarunning. The sport's ultra-inclusiveness is also discussed in the conversation another reason so many people are drawn to the challenge of ultras.....while it is a personal journey of transformation the camaraderie and support to bring everyone along to persevere and overcome the challenge is what makes competition truly great....we all get better as a result.  Both Jeff and Mark are 48 years old, have extensive ultra-running resumes they bring to this conversation but more so they both have fascinating personal journeys of overcoming health challenges.  After several years of having severe GI issues which were only worsening, in late 2015 Jeff made the switch to OFM and the use of Vespa from a Primal diet and conventional fueling in his ultras. Since that time he has never looked back. His performance skyrocketed with an overall win in his first race just a month into the program at the 2016 HURT 100  and since then Jeff has risen to be one of the top elite ultra-runners at the 100 Mile Mountain Ultra Distance with wins at HURT, Hardrock, Bear, and, most recently Bloodrock tying Ann Trason for lifetime wins at the distance at 22 wins.  Marc Sanderson is equally experienced having dozens of ultras including several 100+ mile distance ultras. In 2004 he completed the coveted Grand Slam of Ultrarunning completing Western States in under 24 hours, Vermont in under 20 hours, Leadville in just over 27 hours and Wasatch in just over 28 hours. During a random checkup in 2016 and completely asymptomatic Marc was diagnosed with Stage IV Mantle cell Lymphoma and immediately went into chemotherapy. Less than 2 years later Marc returned to ultra-running but with a different mindset. After his battle with Lymphoma he realized that, in spite of the training he needed to do more and that he could not outrun a diet that was not optimal. In the summer of 2019, 2 years after his diagnosis he made the switch to OFM and 3 months later he completed The Bear, his first 100 after beating cancer! Here is his email: ---------- Forwarded message ---------From: Marc Sanderson Date: Tue, Jul 9, 2019 at 5:08 PMSubject: Re: New customer message on July 7, 2019 at 7:19 pmTo: Pam Miller Peter,It’s been a few years - hope you are doing great?I’ve been through the ringer the last couple of years — Lucky for me I work for a hospital, had a random cardiac calcium scan and found myself with a stage 4 Mantel Cell Lymphoma.  I’m two years post stem cell transplant and doing great. I’m needing to make a come back running and I’m having a hell of a time dropping the extra  20 lbs gained through my treatment in combination with just not being able to run like I did before being sick.   I’m going to run my first 100 since being diagnosed at the end of September this year and was wondering if you felt, given my circumstances that I could benefit from VESPA.  I used it on and off years ago after meeting you at one of the race expos and really felt like it help with a couple races that I ran.....  but like alway, cost and consistency was a struggle. I need something.....  I read every damn email I get from VESPA and I feel like it is something that I need to give a go with??  I would love an opportunity to chat with you again, I’m looking for some advice on weight loss and then coming back from my cancer treatments that damn near killed me. I did crazy high doses of chemo living inpatient at Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City over six months leading to my stem cell transplant. I need to fix myself or just give up the idea of ever competing again and just be happy that I’m alive?  I have a great attitude towards life, I’m committed to fix myself or at least give it one hell of a go!!  I just turned 48 and would love not only to break the course record at the Utah Valley Marathon for the 50 age group in two years by running a sub 3 hour again but also to be able to enjoy the long distance running events 50k, 100k and 100 milers?  Sorry for the long email, I just feel like you could help me — it’s the reason I’m reaching out. Thanks for reading, I’d make myself available to talk, email or if needed —I’d fly down and have myself a one on one evaluation, discussion/appointment.....  that’s how bad I need to do something different, because my way is not working.  Marc Sanderson   Enjoy the conversation! Please share if you enjoy this episode.

It is also seen around the world on flags, on medals given for bravery, on uniforms, and on military insignias. The story of the Maltese Cross reaches hundreds of years back into the past to a tiny island of rock called Malta, located about 80 miles off the southern coast of Italy, where a ragged band of warriors called the Knights of Saint John held out through 112 days of brutal fighting to defend Christianity from the Muslim scourge that was threatening all of Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. We read in the Bible about God wiping out entire people groups, whole cities. In fact, come to the time of the Flood, and God killed everybody on planet Earth with the exception of only eight people. People killing people; that's terrible. God commanded the eradication of men and women and the aged and children? How do we reconcile that? Join John Bradshaw at Blood Rock in Australia as the answers are revealed from the Bible.

MR54: Finally, I was able to catch up with the Birmingham Trail Runners parent, friend, mentor, race director, and more - David Tosch. David is very busy year around to setup trail racing events, planning races, running, training, and more. David and Marye Jo Tosch founded the Southeastern Trail Runs - southeasterntrailruns.com, which has been great asset to the Birmingham Trail running community. David has helped to put the Southeastern trail running on the map with many races including Birmingham Stage race, Lake Martin 100, Blood Rock, and more. Personally, David has been great friend, mentor, and inspiration to me. David did not put me in trail, but he kept me in trail. With the start of 5th Southeastern Trail Series this week, I can say that I also grew as trail runner with series. I cannot thank enough for all love, care, encouragements, and support that I get from David and Marye Jo Tosch. This is a must listen Podcast for those of you want run/ran/running any or all races of Southeastern Trail Runs.
