In September 2023, Weekly Shonen Jump launched a new manga series that has since skyrocketed to the top of Japan's bestseller charts. The series, which breaks exciting new ground for the company, has prompted Shonen Jump to embrace what it refers to as the next generation of "Cool Japan." The aforementioned manga is none other than Kagurabachi, an edgy dark fantasy tale written and illustrated by Takeru Hokazono. As detailed by Japan news outlet 47NEWS, the series captures the "alluring charm" of Japanese swordsmanship through the story of Chihiro Rokuhiro -- an adolescent whose father is murdered by a gang of sorcerers, prompting him to embark on a quest for revenge. Recently, Nordot conducted an interview with Hokazono in which he described what elements inspired him during the creation of Shonen Jump's latest manga sensation. In Administering Affect: Pop-Culture Japan and the Politics of Anxiety (Stanford UP, 2022), Daniel White draws on extensive fieldwork in government ministries and government-adjacent organizations to explore Japan's current “politics of anxiety,” the ways in which state administrators have transformed anxieties about Japan's global geopolitical status into future-oriented programs of national branding and revitalization based on a narrowly defined vision of pop-culture as synecdoche and savior. Examining the so-called “Cool Japan” soft-power strategy and policymaking decisions to nominate anime favorite Doraemon as a cultural ambassador and icons of young women's culture as “Ambassadors of Cute,” White shows that the anxieties driving Japan's administrators are disseminated into the culture broadly. He also pays close attention to the gender politics of these campaigns and the instrumentalization of women as agents of national branding and soft-power politics. He also pays close attention to the gender politics of these campaigns and the instrumentalization of women as agents of national branding and soft-power politics. She gives some of the features of Abby's books that make them stand out from others.Abby talks about the role of color in her comic-drawing and names Keith Haring as one of her inspirations. She especially loves drawing desserts and all kinds of foods!Abby talks about some of the challenges of putting together her two Japan guides and her latest, Uniquely Japan, which was much more of a multimedia effort.Amy mentions she especially likes the tips in the book, such as suggesting people order the teishoku daily special (set menu) when people go to a restaurant to get the chance to sample as many amazing Japanese foods as possible.Abby says the book aims to provide a fun way to learn about different Japanese topics. Parfaits for example! “You can see gorgeous parfait displays everywhere,” she says, referring to the plastic food models in the display window of many restaurants and cafes in Japan. "I find them so dazzling,” Abby says. This launches into a discussion of Japan being a very visual culture.Abby says Uniquely Japan is different from her previous books because Cool Japan and Cool Tokyo were conceived as guidebooks. They have travel tips and information helpful for tourists planning their first trip to Japan. Uniquely Japan can be read just to learn about Japanese culture.Abby elaborates on the reception of her books in Japan and some surprising feedback she received from Japanese readers of the book. She also elaborates on the “Street Sites” chapter in her book that highlights decorative manhole covers, police boxes, and the specific design motifs of each town you can discover. "As a visual artist, it really makes you feel validated to see all this amazing graphic design everywhere. I feel like it's used so much more aesthetically, and in a more visually pleasurable manner in Japan than other in other places. The little accents and the motifs come together for a visually pleasurable experience.”Amy mentions Abby's use of stamps in Uniquely Japan, referring to the rubber stamps at every railway station that you can press into your diary or journal. The stamp features a graphic of the place you visited along with that town's motif. This leads to a discussion of “stamp rallies” (and where to find them) and also collecting the beautifully brushed goshuin stamps from temples. When Amy asks Abby for an interesting backstory to one of her books, Abby tells the story of writing Kitty Sweet Tooth, a collaboration that started with a random meeting of an artist in a bar. The first book, Kitty Sweet Tooth, was published last year and the next book, Kitty Sweet Tooth Makes a Movie, will be published this fall.Lastly, Abby reveals her 3 favorite books on Japan and why:1. Manga! Manga!: The World of Japanese Comics by Frederik L. Schodt2. Tokyo on Foot: Travels in the City's Most Colorful Neighborhoods by Florent Chavouet3 Himawari House, a fictional graphic novel by Harmony BeckerAmy ends the podcast by suggesting what Abby's next book should be to which Abby responds that her husband keeps telling her the same thing.

Warm and militant greetings! I'm your host Kota and welcome to the Against Japanism Podcast: Destabilizing Japanese History from the Left! In this introductory episode, I discuss the goals of this podcast and the principles behind it, and preview the upcoming episodes that I have already recorded and will be published here very soon. To sum up, this podcast is a study of Japanese history through the lens of dialectical and historical materialism, a history characterized by conflict and change, as opposed to equilibrium and stasis, as the history of class struggles and struggles between the oppressors and the oppressed. I discuss what this means in relation to Japanism and the question of Japaneseness that I themed this podcast around, as an ideological byproduct of capitalism, imperialism, and fascism, as well as the histories of resistance and revolutionary movements that have proved it wrong: Japan never was and is not a harmonious and homogeneous society like what Japanists in the West and Japan believe it to be (If it ever was, it was an outcome of a conscious effort by the Japanese state to suppress anarchists, communists, and anti-colonial activists, and is continuously reproduced today through campaigns like "Cool Japan" that create an impression that progressive and revolutionary ideas are foreign to Japan).Unlike their idealized image of Japan as traditional and unchanging, Japanese history has gone through significant changes such as the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the colonization of the Ryukyu Islands, the Ainu homelands, and Asia without which the growth and maintenance of capitalism in the mainland Japan would have been impossible, the rise of fascism that criminalized revolutionary politics and dashed the hope of a socialist revolution in Japan in the inter-war period., the U.S-led Allied Occupation that restored the fascists like Kishi Nobusuke to power to turn Japan into a bastion of anti-communism in Asia during the Cold War, and the popular and student-led uprisings in the 1960s that challenged the rise of "democratized" post-war Japan as a partner of the US imperialism. It is still changing today, even though the drivers of this change are still the bourgeoisie against the working class and oppressed masses. The Japanese state's poor handling of the CORVID-19 pandemic and inhumane treatment of migrants and refugees are just a few examples of this. These are dark times, but seeing online content about activism in Japan makes me hopeful. I hope this podcast can contribute to that conversation and I would be very happy if those of you who speak English and engage with activism in Japan found it helpful. If you liked or disliked the episode, please let me know why at againstjapanism@gmail.com.Outro Music: The Internationale (Instrumental) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGqMMpMkKXshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_InternationaleSong and Struggle: The Internationale - People's Worldhttps://www.peoplesworld.org/article/song-and-struggle-the-internationale/The  Internationale (Japanese Version)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyfhs42mdyASupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/againstjapanism)

Here’s a shortlist of hotels at Universal Studios Japan I recommend. The Park Front Hotel at Universal Studios Japan – You’re directly in front of the Park gates and have instant access to Universal CityWalk Osaka. The rooms are gorgeous and have restaurants and even a Lawson (Japanese convenience store). The Singulari HOTEL & SKYSPA – Attached to the train station is this simple hotel fantastic for those who want a comfortable, clean, and stylish place to sleep. After a long day at Universal Studios Japan, the rooftop sento (public bath) is great to unwind and relax.
