Tom Rachman's debut, the New York Times bestselling The Imperfectionists, was a novel-in-stories, each chapter told of a different character in the news business at a time of journalistic tumult. (Rachman was a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press stationed in Rome, then an editor at the International Herald Tribune in Paris.) His new novel, THE IMPOSTERS , spotlights a different writer per chapter set in our moment of cultural tumult--a standup-comedy writer in LA; a delivery driver hired to write fake-news in London; a pretentious Brooklyn author struggling through a literary festival in Australia. At the center in all ways is Dora Frenhofer, a once successful novelist who knows her mind is going and is determined to finish her final book and reverse her fortunes. The plot stops in New Delhi and New York, Copenhagen and Los Angeles, Syria to Paris, inhabiting the perspectives of Dora's missing brother, her estranged daughter, a lover, and her last remaining friend. Alone in her London home during the pandemic, Dora creates, and is in turn created by, the characters from her own life. Tom Rachman is the author of five works of fiction: his bestselling debut, The Imperfectionists (2010), which was translated into 25 languages; the critically acclaimed follow-up, The Rise & Fall of Great Powers (2014); a story collection, Basket of Deplorables (2017); a novel set in the art world, The Italian Teacher (2018); and a novel-in-stories about writers, The Imposters (2023).Born in London and raised in Vancouver, Tom studied cinema at the University of Toronto and journalism at Columbia University in New York. He worked at The Associated Press as a foreign-news editor in Manhattan headquarters, then became a correspondent in Rome. He also reported from India, Sri Lanka, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Turkey and elsewhere. To write fiction, he left the AP and moved to Paris, supporting himself as an editor at the International Herald Tribune. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker, among other publications. Today, he is a contributing columnist at The Globe & Mail. He lives in London.  For more info on The Imposters click HERE   --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steve-richards/support

That gig got him playing again after Gord Downey's passing, and the break up of the Hip, and rekindled his love for songwriting. From there, the collection of songs that became his new solo record “Guess What” emerged. We'll also meet best-selling author Tom Rachman, the author of four works of fiction including the latest one, “The Imposters,” the story of an aging and embittered novelist who knows her mind of going. She is determined, however, to finish her final book, and reverse her fortunes, before time runs out. And later in the show we'll meet Carly Stone and Amanda Fix, the director and star of “North of Normal,” the true story of Cea Sunrise Person, who, at age 15, was working as a high-fashion model in Manhattan and Paris. The new movie tells the story of her unconventional childhood with free-spirited mother Michelle, played by Sarah Gadon, and the journey from the wilderness of Alberta and British Columbia to the runways of the fashion world.

It's funny how themes emerge when guests get paired together.   Most often, the date I schedule a guest appearance is based on their book pub date and so we get these funny coincidences when I sit down to write the show notes. Both Catherine Isaac and Tom Rachman have written books that have a troubled father-son relationship at the center, and both of them write novels that allowed them to explore topics that were very deep and personal.   For Catherine Isaac, who had written for years in the UK as Jane Costello, the shift in topic and tone that lead to You, Me, Everything was significant enough that she had to change the name she wrote under in order to make the switch. Her book, one that deals with deeper and more challenging themes than her previous series, was one she felt she needed to write, even if she had to set aside an author brand she'd been building for years. In our chat, we talk about the desire to go further in her writing as well as the politics of pseudonyms. SO much to learn from this one!   I've adored Tom Rachman ever since The Imperfectionists, so it was a special treat to get to talk to him about his latest novel, The Italian Teacher. His challenge in writing it was the desire to cover a character's full life from beginning to end. We discuss the powerful father-son relationship that lives at the center of the book, his own existential concerns about becoming a parent and how writing this book helped him open up to being a father, and finally what good fiction strives to convey about what being human is really about.   We do really deep in this episode, which is something I enjoy so much. I hope you have a great time listening. As always, share your thoughts with me on twitter @carodonahue or on our FB page. I love hearing from you! With Royal Wedding fever building Caro and Corrie take a look at the lead up to the big day for Harry and Meghan – and while fashion is on the agenda, Corrie’s got some “Dos and Don’ts” for Middle-Aged women. In “BSF” – Corrie has been reading ‘The Italian Teacher’ by Tom Rachman, Caro’s been off to the movies to see the new Aussie film ‘Breath’ and she shares a recipe for ‘Kale & Pistachio Cheese Balls with Rosemary Biscuits’ (courtesy of a Laurie Chartres cooking class - see recipe below). No surprises US politics is making Corrie grumpy this week, and in “6 Quick Questions” Caro shares her top 3 Australian films, Cher vs Barbra Streisand and much more.    Kale & Pistachio Cheese Ball with Rosemary Biscuits   Kale & Pistachio Cheese Ball 1 C (225g) grated or shredded tasty cheese             1 tbsp mango chutney 1 pkg (230g) cream cheese, chopped                       1 tsp curry powder 4 spring onions, diced                                              2 tsp sea salt 1 clove garlic, minced   40g (1 small packet) red kale chips (I like the Cashew & Barbecue Spice Blend flavour) 20g toasted pistachios, chopped Method Place everything except the chips & pistachios in a large bowl and leave at room temp for 1 hour.  Beat with an electric mixer until fairly smooth. Cover and chill for at least one hour. Lay a piece of plastic wrap out on the bench. Clip a hole in the corner of the chip bag before gently bashing with a rolling pin. Coarsely chop the pistachios and combine the two in a small bowl before tipping onto the plastic wrap. With clean hands shape the cheese mixture into a ball before rolling in the kale mixture and gently pressing it into the surface.  Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Rosemary Biscuits 2 C (300g) flour                    1 C sultanas or golden raisins 2 tsp baking soda                  ½ C pecans, coarsely chopped 1½ tsp sea salt                      ½ C pumpkin seeds (pepitas) 2 C butter milk                     ¼ C sesame seeds ¼ C brown sugar                  ¼ C ground flax seeds or ground LSA ¼ C honey                            2 tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped                                               2 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated Method Pre-heat oven to180oC (fan forced). Toast the pecans and pumpkin seeds for approx 10 mins. Allow to cool. In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Stir to combine.  Add the buttermilk, brown sugar and honey and stir until just combined.  Add the balance of the ingredients and stir until well blended.  Spoon the batter into 2 x gladbake-lined loaf tins and bake in the 180oC oven for approx 30 mins or until a cake tester comes out clean.  Allow to settle for 10 mins before turning out on a wire rack to cool completely. Hint: The cooler the loaf the easier it is to slice thinly. You can leave in the fridge overnight or store well wrapped in the freezer. Pre-heat oven to 160oC (fan forced). Slice the loaves as thin as you can and place the slices in a single layer on an ungreased baking tray. Bake for 12-15 mins, turn over, and bake for another 12-15 mins or until a deep golden brown. Allow to cool completely on wire racks before storing in a biscuit tin or airtight container. To serve, place the cheese ball in the centre of a platter, arrange the rosemary biscuits, a small bowl of chutney with a small spoon or knife, and a few sprigs of rosemary. Thanks to Laurie Chartres Cooking Classes for the recipe.

Historian and broadcaster Amanda Vickery gives her verdict on the film Belle, set in the eighteenth century, which tells the true story of the illegitimate daughter of a British naval officer and a slave, who was brought up by her great uncle in Georgian London. Bafta award-winner Roger Graef has been making documentaries for fifty years. A pioneer of "fly-on-the-wall" formats and films made in closed institutions such as prisons, police stations and government ministries, Roger has just been given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sheffield DocFest. He joins Kirsty to discuss his work - and to give his predictions for the future of documentary-making. Dazzle Ships were used in the First World War to confuse the enemy. A variety of British ships were painted in bright, colourful patterns to disorientate and confuse German sailors trying to judge the vessels' speed and direction. As two new Dazzle Ships are created in the UK, Front Row hears from the project curator and a naval historian. Tom Rachman's first novel, The Imperfectionists, about a failing newspaper received rave reviews. His second novel The Rise & Fall of Great Powers, starts off in failing bookshop. He talks to Kirsty about why he thinks books, if not newspapers, will survive the digital future. Kirsty Lang - Presenter Nicola Holloway - producer.
