This week's episode is a conversation with accomplished artist and scholar-practitioner Christian de Vietri about his journey from the contemporary art world to the study and practice of Tantric sacred art. Christian, known for his large-scale public installations and fine art, shares how he came to know and practice non-dual Shaiva Tantra, how this transformed his approach to artistic expression, and how it led to the publication of his groundbreaking book, Trika Maṇḍala Prakāśa: Illuminating the Mandalas of Abhinavagupta's Tantrāloka—the first detailed and comprehensive study of all the mandalas presented and taught in Abhinavagupta's Tantrāloka. The conversation explores the process of reconstructing these mandalas, including the challenges of decoding encoded texts, the significance of mandalas in Tantric initiation, and the precise methodologies required to ensure their correct construction. Christian describes the artistic and spiritual insights that emerged through this work and reflects on the broader role of sacred art in preserving and transmitting the wisdom of the tradition.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org.

The fifteenth century Villa Taverna, commissioned by Cardinal Consalvi, was first rented by the U.S. Embassy in 1933.  The Villa and its historical gardens are filled with valuable art from antiquity through the Renaissance, to the nineteenth century. The Villa and gardens were purchased by the U.S. Embassy in 1948 from Princess Ida Borromeo-Taverna. The Villa has since served as the residence for 19 American ambassadors, and is protected by Italian law for cultural heritage. This property is huge: one city block or 7000 m². It's filled with spectacular hand-painted ceramic pavement from Vietri and magnificent gardens. You can only visit the Villa if you have the good fortune to be a guest at the Villa Taverna ambassadorial residence, which we were last week. Villa Taverna is not to be confused with Palazzo Taverna, also magnificent and not only visitable, but this exquisite Palazzo occasionally has a few outstanding apartments for rent. She is the owner and baking instructor at Sugar Glider Kitchen where classes sell out within 5 minutes and is working towards getting her Vermont Master Gardener Certification in 2023. She also released her latest cookbook ‘My Vermont Table: Recipes for All (Six) Seasons' published by Countryman Press. Vermont―arguably the OG farm-to-table state―is celebrated through 100+ recipes and stories from celebrated pastry chef Gesine Bullock-Prado. When Gesine Bullock-Prado left her Hollywood life in 2004 and moved to Vermont, she fell in love with the Green Mountain State's flavors and six unique seasons. Spring, summer, fall, and winter all claim their place at this table, but a true Vermonter holds extra space for maple-forward mud season―that time of year before spring when thawing ice makes way for mucky roads―and stick season, a notable period of bare trees and gourds galore prior to winter. In My Vermont Table, Bullock-Prado takes readers on a sweet and savory journey through each of these special seasons. Oh Canada, we'll have on the program Chef Dale Mackay. Touring the world as Gordon Ramsay's right-hand at his Michelin-starred restaurants, the first Top Chef Canada winner and AAA Five Diamond Award winning Chef Dale MacKay is gearing up for a huge 2023 as he competes in the new season of Bravo's Top Chef: World All-Stars. Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, and Gail Simmons are back hosting Season 20 of the Emmy, James Beard Foundation and Critics' Choice Award-winning series which features 16 winners and finalists from 11 different Top Chef versions around the world competing for the ultimate World All-Stars title. This time the chefs will return to the kitchen to battle it out throughout London before moving on to the grand finale in Paris. This epic showdown marks the first time the flagship edition of Top Chef has gone abroad for an entire season. Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, MacKay's culinary career began as a fry cook in Vancouver, B.C. He then moved to London, England, where he began working at Gordon Ramsay's Claridge's, followed by stints in other Michelin-starred Ramsay restaurants in London, Tokyo, and New York City. He eventually returned to Vancouver to become the executive chef at Chef Daniel Boulud's Lumière restaurant, where the restaurant was awarded the AAA Five Diamond Award under his direction. You'll enjoy listening to Susan Everett Gravely, the Founder and the CEO of VIETRI., a lifestyle brand of Italian artisan-crafted dinnerware and home and garden accessories. VIETRI is now America's largest Italian ceramics importing company, partnering with numerous Italian manufacturers in various regions throughout Italy. VIETRI serves a customer base of over 2,000 specialty retailers and department stores in all 50 states and internationally. The Greens in Victoria are pushing for self-employed musicians and production crews to be eligible for sick pay. Gabrielle de Vietri, the party's candidate for Richmond in Victoria's upcoming state election, has started a petition urging the Victorian Labor Government to extend its new Sick Pay Guarantee to include casual or self-employed workers in the arts sector, effective immediately. Filmmakers, producers, theatre workers and visual artists are also currently excluded. The Victorian Government introduced the Sick Pay Guarantee in June as a two-year trial to stop low-income workers from going to work when ill during the pandemic. It provides up to 38 hours (or five days a year) of sick and carer's pay. So far it covers 150,000 hospitality workers, food preparation assistants, food trades workers, sales support workers, sales assistants, labourers in supermarket supply chains, aged and disability carers, cleaners and laundry workers and security officers and guards. They must not already be entitled to paid personal, sick or carer's leave in any of their jobs, or have leave entitlements, and their workplaces must be physically located in Victoria. If allowed, each claim by musicians and live sector workers would be paid at the national minimum wage as it is on the date of the claim (currently $20.33 per hour/$772.54 per week) Studies show that those in the sector feel guilty about taking time off when ill—or fear they might be seen as unreliable and replaced. But it's now seen as contributing to burnout, mental health problems, social alienation, substance abuse and higher than average suicide rates in the sectors. Victoria's cultural and creative sectors employ approximately 220,000 people, making up 8% of the economy. Meanwhile, WA's Consumer Protection is investigating ticket re-selling website Viagogo for possible breaches of the state's anti-scalping laws, in a bid to collect enough evidence to launch legal action, and we discuss the new Grapevine lineup. It's allure includes two famous villas that boast gardens unlike any you have ever seen. The teeny fishing village of Cetara takes credit for creating a pasta sauce from the anchovies they catch off their shores. Vietri sul Mare is the southern most village of the Amalfi Coast and it's one you will not forget due to it's vibrant ceramics which are everywhere in this multicolored village.

This week's guest is Nicola DeRobertis-Theye, author of The Vietri Project. This novel combines millennial disillusionment, historical and present-day Rome, the resurfacing of childhood trauma, and a healthy dose of intrigue. Gabriele, a 25 year old woman struggling with purpose after graduating from college, travels to Rome in search of Vietri, a former client of hers at the bookstore where she worked. Gabriele knows nothing of Vietri other than his taste in dense academic books, and her quest brings her not only knowledge of Italy's sordid colonial past, but also brings her face to face with family she left behind, as well as her own sense of self. This is an introspective novel with a strong sense of setting and nuanced characterization. If you've been yearning to travel, this might be the book for you. Nicola reflects on an all-time favorite book, Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin. This dense, ambitious project, somewhat overshadowed by Atwood's speculative fiction, is a blending of genre and narrative style in its own right. Comprised of newspaper clippings, character recollections, and a novel within a novel, readers piece together the disintegration of a family and the legacy its members have left behind. DeRobertis-Theye shares her story of reading The Blind Assassin as a teen, finding new insight in the book as an adult, the other writers that have influenced her prose style, and so much more.
