This evening we discuss the insight of Rabbi Zalman Sorotzkin on the brief, stark introduction of Moshe's parents, and how to move forward when you feel shame over your parent or child. We explore the long back and forth of God trying to convince, and ultimately commanding Moshe lead the Jewish People our of Egypt, finding a similarity between God's patient responses to Moshe's objections, with Hillel's unwillingness to lose his temper. The famous commentator Bechor Shor (12th c. Tosafist) pinpoints the moment God becomes angry with Moshe, and why. Finally, we examine the bizarre narrative of Tziporah performing Brit Milah and her son, to save her husband, Moshe, from death! We explain this with a teaching of Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein stemming from the laws of Chanukah, and expressed in his daily life - family comes first. Shemos Women's Class: This class waspresented on Tuesday, Parshas Shemos, 21Tevet, 5784, January 2, 2024, at Bais Medrash Ohr Chaim in Monsey, NY. Why Moshe? Why was he chosen as the first and greatest Jewish leader, teacher, and prophet? The Torah does not provide an explicit reason. But it does give us a clue. Often people ask me why the Torah focuses so much on men. The question is strange, because in Genesis, almost every important history-changing decision is made by a woman. And in Shemos, it is six women who are responsible for the entire story of the Egyptian Exodus: Shifra, Puah, Yocheved, Miriam, Pharaohs daughter Batya, and Tziporah. These six extraordinary people refused to bow their heads to the inevitable; they are giants in the story of mankind and in the story of the Jewish people. They were also, it seems, the role models who molded, crafted, and mentored Moses; they taught him how to live, how to think, how to act. The three stories the Torah shares about Moses, which made him the man suitable to be the greatest leader ever, are essentially all stories inspired by these women who impacted his life, wholike our mothers, wives and daughters to this very dayhelped him become the person who would change history forever. The class concludes with a life-changing message by Einav Efrat Danino, the mother of Ori, 24, who was taken captive by Hamas on October 7th 2023, may we see his redemption, and the redemption of all the hostages, very soon.

Moses continues to drag his feet and doesn't want to participate in what God is asking him to do and God seeks to put him to death. It's only when Moses' wife Tziporah steps in and acts as the family patriarch and priest by circumcising their son Gershon, does God allow Moses to continue. Despite this provision, God ends up splitting up the duties of Leader and Priest between Moses and Aaron as a concession to Moses' continued resistance to his new position.

More mishnayot! One - a person who makes a vow not to benefit from those who "rest" on Shabbat - who is included and excluded from this category? Or a vow not to benefit from those who eat garlic... Which links back to a decree from Ezra, specifically to eat garlic on Shabbat. Likewise, one who goes up to Jerusalem. All being connected to Jews vs. Kutim. Two - Swearing off benefit from those who are descendants of Noah, which sounds like everyone, but comes to exclude the Jewish people. Three - Swearing off benefit from those who are descendants from Abraham, which sounds like it means at least all of the three main monotheistic religions, but also turns out to exclude the Jewish people. Four - One who swears off benefitting from a Jew... Can one do business with a Jew after that? Five - Swearing off benefit from "arelim," the "uncircumcised ones" does not include an uncircumcised Jewish person. Plus, how this phrasing differs from promising to get benefit from those who are circumcised. Also, a discussion of the circumcision, including how brit milah takes precedence over Shabbat, and how Moshe did wrong in not circumcising his son (Tziporah did it). Plus, the completion or perfection of circumcision for Abraham.

This shiur was given in my Rambam Bekius chavurah, but it ended up being a Chumash Exploration, so I'm posting it here. This afternoon (4/7/22), in our Rambam Bekius chavurah, we had PLANNED to finish Hilchos korban Pesach. Instead, we took up a tangential question we raised yesterday: What's going on in the short episode involving Tziporah and Bris Milah? We were led here by the Rambam's halachos about the prohibition of an uncircumcised person to partake of the Korban Pesach, and we were hoping to be treated to a citation of the Rambam's view. Instead, we got the views of the generations on either side: that of R' Avraham, and that of R' Maimon. We didn't answer all our questions, but we think we got R' Avraham's pshat, and a take-away lesson. ----------מקורות:שמות ד:יח-כותרגום אונקלוסר' אברהם בן הרמב"םבראשית יז:י-ידרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות י:ח----------This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Ann, who (against my will) asked that it be sponsored in honor of me. Today, we are going to talk about eating disorders and grief, and how they relate to another. We talk about how eating disorders can bring on feelings of grief, related to our own sense of identity. We also explore how grief can create changes in appetite that can be the beginning of disordered eating. Often, grievers feel some lack of control, and controlling food intake may be one way to gain a sense of that back. In extreme cases, this control can turn in to severe restrictions of food intake. Study Guide Chagigah 3 Today’s daf is sponsored by Tracy Akner for a refuah shleima for Shifra Hadassah bat Chana and Shimon ben Tziporah. The Gemara establishes that one who can hear but not speak and one who can speak but not hear is exempt from the mitzva of “seeing” – coming to the Temple and bringing holiday burnt offerings but obligated in the chagigah sacrifices. This exemption is derived by a gezeira shava from verses of Hakhel. How do we know that this person is also exempt from Hakhel? Rabbi Tanchum mentions other people who are exempt as well – one who is deaf in one ear, one who has one leg. Where are these derived from? A story is told (including within it a drasha about Hakhel) of rabbis who went to visit their rabbi, Rabbi Yehoshua, on the holiday and he wanted to know what drashot they heard in the Beit Midrash. At first, they are hesitant to say but after much coaxing, they tell him what they learned from Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria. The first drasha is why the children were also brought to Hakhel. The second drasha explains the unique 2-way relationship between God and the Jewish people. The third is an explanation of the verse in Kohelet 12:11 that compares the words of the rabbis to prodders and to nails. There is a beautiful description of the importance and beauty of learning Torah. The end of the verse refers to the multitude of different opinions among the rabbis. If that is the case, what is our job as a learner – how to make sense of it all? Why were those rabbis so hesitant to tell Rabbi Yehoshua the drashot they hear din the Beit Midrash? Their fear was due to a different story where someone was in a similar situation – went to visit Rabbi Eliezer - and after sharing what had happened in the Beit Midrash, Rabbi Eliezer prays that he be blinded and he is. Why?? The story ends with his vision restored. The Gemara goes back to analyzing the Mishna and asks how can we determine when someone is considered a shoteh and is exempt as well?

Rebbetzin Tziporah Heller teaches us how to navigate life and move forward in our chaotic world. Our control is in how we choose to respond to situations. We are not in control of what happens to us, but we are in control over how we respond. She also talks about developing meaningful connections through spiritual bonding, which is what gives us true pleasure in life. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vera-kessler/message
In this inspiring episode, Tziporah Gellman of Frumba Chicago and Eve discuss some tips on how to start changing habits in one's life beginning by using first and foremost self-love. It starts with you! And sometimes the best way to do something new for the first time is just by "putting a foot in the door". We will hear about how important it is to be positive with oneself, using empowering mantras and statements, looking yourself in the mirror and setting some goals for your day to stay motivated. Tziporah's story is not about weight loss, it's about getting on a journey to self love. Enjoy this episode!
Meet Tzipora Zelmanowitz, a recovering Love Addict. Tzipora, a practicing attorney who lives in Queens, New York, has been in recovery from her love addiction for 5.5 years. Her journey into the world of recovery began after years of unsuccessful dating, when she eventually began to wonder… why weren't things working? Why was she dating the kind of men she didn't actually want to marry? Were things supposed to be this hard? As she started looking within, she began to understand that she struggled with addiction—specially, an addiction to love. “The turning point was me realizing that there's something wrong with me needing to be different with every person I'm encountering,” Tziporah reflects. “I didn't know what I liked or how I was going to show up as a spouse in a relationship…. I was going to be whoever my husband wanted me to be.” Now, years later, after attending therapy and a 12-step program,Tziporah joins us to discuss the pain of carrying a constant, insatiable need for love, validation, and acceptance, the fear of rejection that came along with that, and her recovery from love addiction and codependency. Today, she's building self-love and acceptance, and inspiring and educating others to do the same. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/neshamos-podcast/support

Milas Tziporah (Shemos 5781)
Well, can she? So, in Parshas Shemos, Moshe Rabbeinu's wife Tziporah performs a Bris Milah on their son... or does she? Also, beyond biology, why didn't Hashem enable women to perform this Mitzvah of Bris Milah on themselves? In this Real-Talk Torah, we'll review some of the sources and talk some Halachah and Hashkafah on the matter (speak to your local Orthodox Rav for practical Halachah).

This week’s Torah portion, Parashat Yitro, is named for the Midianite Priest, Jethro, and depicts his first encounter with Moses in the desert. The two forge a relationship despite their different faiths and ethnicities, and Moses ends up marrying his daughter, Tziporah. Rabbi Rick Jacobs recounts theirs as well as other interreligious relationships that are depicted in Jewish texts, and he asks us, what can we do to break down ethnic (and other) labels, and build even deeper connections.
Maya Ben-Shushan's interview with Chava Hadari, an Ethiopian Israeli woman living in northern Israel with her husband and two boys. Chava is a native Hebrew speaker and we thank her for doing this interview in English. Maya Ben-Shushan is a Cofounder of The Society of Independent Spirituality. She teaches classes at the Society and is finishing her degree in Social Work at Hebrew University. Chava Hadari is a teacher living in northern Israel. She has helped run a program called "The New Way", which helps Ethiopian kids strengthen their talents and further integrate into Israeli society. ➖Brief Summary of Hebrew Conversation ➖ English - 00:00 - 10:15 Hebrew - 10:15 - 22:53 In Ethiopia, they took purity very seriously. There was the ‘Red Tent’ where women would go once they felt they had their period and after childbirth (since it is their time of impurity). If they were hungry they’d eat on plates that would be destroyed after they finished because it held impurity. They would throw away the clothes they wore during this period since it held impurity. The Ethiopian community doesn’t believe that Israeli religious society takes purity and impurity seriously. In Ethiopia, they also held that if you touched a non-jew then you would be considered impure. In the torah it says that Tziporah was the one who circumcised her son, so in Ethiopia only women would perform on the child the ritual of circumcision - not the men. During shabbat, Ethiopian Jews would play instruments because the levites would play instruments in the temple. Shabbat is the most holiest of days, even more so than Yom Kippur. So if Yom Kippur would fall on shabbat, they would light candles of shabbat, drink a bit of wine eat a small piece of bread and then continued fast. Also Kashrut looked different in Ethiopia. It was said that you cannot eat meat in the milk of its mother - but that doesn’t mean you can’t eat chicken with butter. That’s not what was written. Also with slaughter of meat - which Ethiopian Amharim Jews came out against the Israeli rabbinate’s slaughter and do not find it kosher. In the Ethiopian Aliyah, there were two main jewish communities; the Amharim (speaks Amharic) and the Tigrim (speak Tigris). The Ethiopian community is a very strong community that, just with the rumors Aliyah in Sudan, left everything they had with the hopes to make it to Jerusalem. They are willing to be here even though they have given up part of their culture, their language, their beliefs, etc. There is not much information out there in both Hebrew and English about this community and each one of us can empathically and humbly ask to hear stories from the Ethiopian jews around us. ➖Follow us on Facebook ➖ Facebook.com/SpiritualRevolutionofRavKook Facebook.com/IndependentSpirituality
