The church is saved by the service of a sacrificial Savior; and the church flourishes and grows by the service of sacrificial saints. When we love one another in the way we have been loved by Christ; when we serve one another in the way in which we have been served the church will be healthy and effective. This is the basic principle that Paul has been pushing throughout this book. Selfishness has gotten hold of the Philippians church and is causing damage, self-preservation in the face of persecutions; and self-interest towards the saints. Paul has called the Philippians to walk worthy of the gospel that has saved them, and this means dying to self and living the crucified life in the same manner our Savior did. In particular Paul has been dealing with the matter of selfless humble service and using Christ as the ultimate example. But Paul also multiplies the examples of selfless service using himself as an object lesson, and now in the verses we want to consider Timothy, v19- 24; and Epaphroditus, v25-30. V19-24, ‘I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. 20 For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. 21 For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know Timothy's proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. 23 I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, 24 and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also.'
I remember when…we'll say a friend of mine…pulled the lever on a fire-alarm at my middle school, and the gleeful chaos that ensued as classes were emptied and students gathered outside (this, of course, was in a world devoid of modern security threats and active shooter drills). One little lever pulled and it resulted in the total disruption of normal activities, for a little while anyway.(I also remember the dire consequences that….we'll say a friend of mine…suffered as a result of that prank – so that sort of behavior is NOT being approved by sharing that memory!)It's hard to fully grasp the events that took place that morning that Jesus walked into the temple grounds in Jerusalem and started throwing people out, but I think it may have been similar to pulling a fire-alarm trigger. That's the story we'll be tackling this Sunday as we explore John 2:13-25.It's easy for us to immediately assign the guilt in this scene to the people who are crassly selling the accouterments of worship at the temple. How dare they sell sacrificial animals like a commercial enterprise…and yet…there was a legitimate purpose that these vendors served. Imagine living a long ways from Jerusalem and hauling the required sacrifice with you. Imagine that a dog nips at it's heel along the way, or worse, a wolf takes a bite out of it's ear. The sacrifice won't be accepted and the expenditure of time and food for the trip would be for naught. It actually makes sense to provide a way, right at the temple, to buy a pre-approved animal to sacrifice. In truth, we have no historical evidence or citations that would prove corruption or price gouging in the sale of animals or exchange of money in the temple courts. There was actually something else going on that morning. Jesus was acting as an Old Testament prophet, staging a protest to momentarily stop the temple system. Why? A disruption and a replacement was being made.If Jesus was forecasting the end of and replacement of the temple – what are the implications of that as you read it? V19 is a major clue as to what God intends – religious structures both physical and organizational will be replaced by a person. What can it mean to us today, as his followers in 21st century America? How can we prevent our own practice of faith from devolving into consumer ritualism? This should prove to be a compelling study – hope you can make it!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slidshow.
James 1 3 main points of the letter which fall under the Law of liberty/Royal Law · How to face trials (and their purpose) · Wisdom from above (not the World) · Love for brothers and sisters (speak in love, care for the poor, no favoritism or hierarchy) 1:2-4 Joy Purpose of trials Perfection. This is not moral perfection (watch our perfection episode). This is about wholeness. The word here is teleios- the goal. In a sacrificial context it's something fit to offer to God. Completeness. Becoming fit for service in humility. Lacking Nothing. If we meet our testing in the right way, if day by day we develop this unswerving constancy, day by day we will live more victoriously and reach nearer to Jesus Christ himself. 1:5-8 Proverbs 9:10- The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. What is wisdom? Wisdom from a biblical perspective begins with following the God who has now revealed himself in Jesus Christ James bases the request for wisdom in God's character… “who gives to all generously and without reproach” Luke 11:11-13 This has more to do with doubting God's character than with doubting that God will answer them. Wisdom comes from knowing God's nature Ex 34:6-7 James describes this person as double minded or double souled. There is a civil war going on inside. 1:9-11 The upside-down kingdom In Jesus' teaching, Matthew and Luke's versions of the first beatitude (Mt 5:3, Lk 6:20) combine to show that the “poor” who are blessed are both the economically marginalized and those who trust in God as their only hope. The rich person must look beyond his wealth. The rich in scripture are often linked to those who trust in themselves or their possession rather than God for their deliverance. Wealth also came with social honor and status in the Roman world. James is cutting down the notion of hierarchy in the church based on a status. James draws on Isaiah 40:6-8 to point out that his money and possession are temporary and will fade away. 1:12-18 Blessed Verses 13-15 talk about how a trial or test can turn into a temptation when faced without joy and wisdom James talks about the life cycle of sin. In V16 James says do not be deceived. Again, James is basing everything on God's character because he continues in 17-18 to show that God is only good and the giver of good gifts. V18 connects our new birth to Wisdom (the word of truth) who is Jesus and our purpose in Him. 1:19-26 James returns to the topic of wisdom from above vs. worldly wisdom and applies to the love of neighbor in verses 19-27. There are 3 parts to this section: 19-21, 22-25, and 26. V19 introduces the section about being quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. 20-21 expounds on slow to anger, 22-25 is about being quick to hear, 26 is about being slow to speak. The perfect Law of liberty (James 2:8) James speaks about the necessity of orthopraxy (correct action) this is based in orthodoxy (correct belief). If one only has orthodoxy this is worthless religion. 1:27 James contrasts V27 with V26 and describes what pure religion (devotion and worship) looks like. James lists 2 things of what pure religion is: visiting orphans/widows and remaining unstained by the world. James clarifies that social justice is very important but not by itself sufficient for “true religion”. The second crucial aspect is to keep yourself unstained by the world. World (kosmos) is used 3 other times in James (2:5; 3:6; 4:4) and each time it is talking about the fallen world systems. These 2 tasks must be held in balance- serving the needy and personal/communal purity.
This Sunday we'll keep reading Ephesians together, covering ch 1:15-23. Paul will be moving from singing to praying in the opening of his letter. In the section we'll be reading, Paul will be praying for his fellow believers – and the import of what he prays for is what we'll be focusing on in our study.Once again, the word Apokalupsis is used – a Greek word which means “something hidden that gets revealed”. Paul wants us to have a revelation concerning three areas of our lives effected by the Gospel. In v15-17 Paul prays that we'd grow in our knowledge of God. What does that mean to you? Do you think he wants us to have a large amount of information stored up about the Divine? What kind of knowledge might he be referring to, and how would it be apprehended in our own lives and experiences? What are some sources we could consider which would provide us a deeper knowledge of God?V18 is Paul's prayer that we would be enlightened concerning hope. What does he anchor that hope in at the end of the verse? What inheritance do you believe he's talking about? Can you think of any important issues of inheritance in the Old Testament that might shed light on what Paul means?V19-23 provide us with a bold declaration of Christ's transcendence over every power or authority, in this world or the next. What does he cite as the source of that power? In what way does the resurrection demonstrate God's power – and what might it be forecasting for this world? This is a complex bit of Scripture – but I'm looking forward to digging into it together and finding ourselves in a life of ongoing discovery. Hope you can join us!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. THE CHRISTIAN DILEMMA PAUL AS A CHRISTIAN MAN... Who is carnal, sold under sin - Ro 7:14-15 'Sold under sin' is exactly what the new convert does not know! Forgiven, justified, he knows himself to be: and he has the joy of it! But now to find an evil nature, of which he had never become really conscious, and of which he thought himself fully rid, when he first believed, is a 'second lesson' which is often more bitter than the first—of guilt!" Paul's statement that he was then as a Christian sold under sin may seem to contradict what he wrote earlier in chapter 6 about no longer being the slave of sin. The phrase "sold in bondage to sin" is proof to many interpreters that Paul was describing a non-Christian here. However, in chapter 6 Paul did not say that being dead to sin means that sin has lost its appeal for the Christian. It still has a strong appeal to the Christian whose human nature is still sinful (6:15-23). He said that being dead to sin means that we no longer must follow sin's dictates. In one sense the Christian is not a slave of sin (6:1-14). We have died to it, and it no longer dominates us. Nevertheless, in another sense sin still has a strong attraction for us since our basic human nature is still sinful, and we retain that nature throughout our lifetime. For example, a criminal released from prison no longer has to live within the sphere of existence prescribed by prison walls. However, he still has to live within the confines of his human limitations. God has liberated Christians from the prison house of sin (6:1-14). Notwithstanding we still carry with us a sinful nature that will be a source of temptation for us as long as we live (7:14-25). To minimize the difficulty of grasping this distinction Paul used different expressions to describe the two relationships. In chapter 6 he used "slaves," but in chapter 7 he wrote "sold" (v. 14). In chapter 6 he spoke of the relationship of the new man in Christ (the whole person, the Christian) to sin. In chapter 7 he spoke of the relationship of the flesh (a part of every person, including the new man in Christ) to sin. Adam sold all human beings into bondage to sin when he sinned (5:12, 14). Desires to good, finds himself unable Desires to abstain from evil, finds himself unable Paul's sinful human nature influenced him to such an extent that he found himself voluntarily doing (approving) the very things that he despised intellectually. This caused him to marvel. All Christians can identify with him in this. Who agrees the law is good, but finds that sins dwells in him - Ro 7:16-20 V 16 The apostle's attitude toward the Law was not the reason for his dilemma. Ro 7:17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. Rather his problem was traceable to the sin that dwelt within him, namely, his sinful flesh. Paul was not trying to escape responsibility but was identifying the source of his sin, his sinful flesh. "I" describes the new man Paul had become at his conversion (Gal. 2:20). Viewed as a whole person he was dead to sin. Nevertheless, the source of sin within him was specifically his sinful human nature that was still very much alive It comes as a terrible discovery for a new believer, or an untaught believer, to realize that our problem with sin is complex. We are sinners not only because we commit acts of sin (Ch. 3) and because, as descendants of Adam, we sin because he sinned (Ch. 5). We are also sinners because we possess a flesh that is thoroughly sinful (Ch. 7). Jesus Christ paid the penalty for acts of sin, He removed the punishment of original sin, and He enables us to overcome the power of innate sin. In general, we may say that in verses 14-17, the emphasis is upon the practicing what is hated, —that is, the inability to overcome evil in the flesh; while in verses 18-21, the emphasis is upon the failure to do the desired good, —the inability, on account of the flesh, to do right. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. In his flesh nothing good dwells The desire to do good is present, the ability to perform is not "Thus the double failure of a saved man either to overcome evil or to accomplish good—is set forth. There must come in help from outside, beyond himself!" V19-20 These verses restate the idea of verses 15 and 17 respectively. Paul evidently repeated the ideas to heighten our appreciation for the sense of frustration that he felt. Ro 7:19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Paul meant that sin had thoroughly corrupted his flesh 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. The good he desires he does not, the evil he desires not he does Thus sin dwells in his flesh Who is enslaved to a "law" (of sin and death, cf. Ro 8:2) – Ro 7:21-23 Ro 7:21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. Ps 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 2Co 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. Eph 3:16; Col 3:9-10 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Where evil is present in one who desires to do good Where a law in his members (flesh) wages war against the law of his mind Where the law in his members brings him into captivity to the law of sin Who finds himself wretched - Ro 7:24 "O wretched man that I am!" "Who shall deliver me from this body of death?" -- A wretched dilemma: sold under sin, indwelt by sin, enslaved to a law of sin! The agony of this tension and our inability to rid ourselves of our sinful flesh that urges us to do things that lead to death come out even more strongly here. What Christian has not felt the guilt and pain of doing things that he or she knows are wrong? We will never escape this battle with temptation in this life. DELIVERED BY CHRIST... Expressed in chapter seven - Ro 7:25 The solution to this dilemma is not escape from temptation but victory over it. By way of anticipation, interrupting his train of thought "I thank God - through Jesus Christ our Lord!" But again, the dilemma: willing to serve the law of God with the mind, but with his flesh he serves the law of sin! Explained in chapter eight - Ro 8:1-6,11-14 There is no condemnation for those in Christ, provided they walk according to the Spirit For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ frees one from the law of sin and death! 1) Christ's death fulfills the righteous requirement (death for sin) 2) Becoming spiritually minded is life and peace, for submission to God is now possible 3) Indwelt by the Spirit, He imparts life to our mortal bodies - cf. Ro 6:12-13; Eph 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 4) We are no longer debtors (enslaved) to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 5) By the Spirit we can put to death the deeds of the flesh, and live as sons of God! -- A blessed condition: no longer enslaved to sin, but empowered by the Spirit! CONCLUSION In Romans 7, Paul vividly illustrates the weakness of the Law of Moses... The Law was holy, just, and good, but it did not offer true deliverance It did not offer deliverance from the guilt and power of sin - cf. Jn 8:34 One can will to do good, but the ability to truly do as one should is not there Have you experienced freedom from the guilt of sin through the blood of Christ (Ep 1:7)? Are you experiencing freedom from the power of sin through the indwelling Spirit (Ro 8:12-13)? Both blessings begin when one receives Christ Lessons Have you ever felt the weight of sin like Paul – unbelievers don't Do you have a longing to please God and keep the law? Has God ever broken you so that you have said wretched man that I am and turned to God for salvation Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” -John 8:32 Our mission is to spread the gospel and to go to the least of these with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ; We reach out to those the World has forgotten. hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en Don't go for all the gusto you can get, go for all the God (Jesus Christ) you can get. We don’t want to forget the important message we considered last week – about our goal to be an unshakable church in this world. We still want to consider the questions posed then: Is my attendance and participation in a weekly church service the main way that I live out my Christianity? If meeting in a building was no longer an option, what would I be doing instead to show the world around me my hope as a Christian? Does our idea of a church meeting need to be restructured to better match God’s calling for us as Christians? My hope is that we will continue praying about these and seeking God’s guidance concerning our function as a church. We are currently working on a list of the micro-missions that are already happening with Eastgate, and others are beginning to develop, which really gets me stoked! If you didn’t hear the conversation last week, you can find it here: An Unshakable Church, starting at the 28 minute mark. I really encourage everyone to listen to it.This Sunday we will be continuing our study in Galatians, reading 2:11-21.In this section of the letter, Paul recounts a confrontation he had with the Apostle Peter…one of the very big names of the early church. Paul had been in Antioch promoting the Good News, which is the message of a new world through God’s grace. Peter’s actions in v12 were undermining that message, and Paul called Peter out on it. In the last part of v12, what is the reason Paul gives for Peter’s behavior? If we want to promote God’s grace like Paul did, what do we have to overcome in order to do that?Underlying this controversy is Peter’s removal of himself from people who were deemed by others as “less-than”. This is key to Paul’s reaction. What does it tell us about the mission of grace in this world? Who are the “less-thans” we tend to withdraw from? How can an appreciation for God’s grace correct that tendency?Paul, in V19-20, gets to the heart of his position. Keeping religious laws is not sustainable in order to be right with God. What is his focus then? How can we promote God’s grace by sharing that same focus?I think this will be a provocative study, and I believe we’ll find useful clues as to how we can go about our mission as the church in this world.
Silent Killers Pt.3 Bitterness Sunday, May 24, 2020 Ruth 1:1, 3, 5-7, 19-21; 19 Now the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. And it happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was excited because of them; and the women said, “Is this Naomi?” 20 But she said to them, “Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went out full, and the Lord has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?” We are going to continue in the series I’m calling Silent Killers. Silent killers are the things that wound your soul, your heart, and if left unaddressed silently kill you from the inside out. The bible says “Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flow the issues of life”! Why is this important? Because internal conflicts will affect external realities! Bitterness is one of those things that if you do not identify and deal with will completely consume and destroy your life. Bitter people are very difficult to be around. They are toxic and the environment around them is toxic. As I was studying for this message it took a turn and went in a direction I wasn’t expecting, but I believe its The Lord so we are going to just go with it. If left unchecked, bitterness will affect your anointing and derail your Destiney. Anointing is a biblical word that is often misunderstood. In the modern church it is rarely if ever used. “That was an anointed song”, “That was an anointed word”, etc… The word anointing simply means divine enablement. If you are anointed that means God takes your natural ability and put His supernatural ability on it and causes you to be better than you really are. The anointing makes the difficult look easy. There is a difference between a gift and anointing. A gift is something that God puts within a person, the anointing is something He puts on a person. The anointing is the difference between good and supernatural! Acts 10:38 “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” Every one of you have gifts, but not all are using those gifts under an anointing. There is a process to the anointing. Thats why prayer for someone else’s anointing doesn’t work! The anointing is a multiplier and an accelerator! The book of Ruth is a powerful picture of Redemption. In the midst of a famine left Bethlehem Judah and went to Moab (Bethlehem=Word or your devotional life and Judah = Praise) and everything starts dying. When you leave the environment you were intended to dwell in things start dying. When you leave the word and praise and go to the flesh what was intended to live die and what needs to die lives! They were gone for 10 years and in v6 that “heard in the country of Moab that The Lord had visited His people by giving them bread.” So she decided to return to where she was from. V19-21 19 Now the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?” Mara means BITTER! Not I feel bitter, I am bitter. Whenever you start to feel something that is contrary to what the word says about you, you have to have a violent reaction to it! Naomi means pleasant and delightful! God called her pleasant and delightful, but she calls herself bitter! There is a big difference between going through a bitter season and becoming bitter. A bitter season will work for your good, but becoming bitter will destroy you. A bitter season will help you develop in your anointing, but becoming bitter will stop the anointing. You can’t be bitter and anointed at the same time. God had just taken then out of Egypt and the first thing He tells them to do is build a tabernacle for worship? Why? Because if your worship isn’t right, noting else will be right! Exodus 30:22 Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 23 “Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane, 24 five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hint of olive oil. 25 And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. Naomi was so consumed with bitterness over the things of the past and her current condition that she can not see her future. In the end she will be breastfeeding a child that isn’t hers. God was about to bring a new thing out of an old thing! God brings life out of a dead situation! The first ingredient in the anointing oil was myrrh. Myrrh means bitter. The perfumer would take the myrrh, the bitter and the sweet spices and mix them all together and what came out of it was a mixture that was so powerful the whatever it touched it changed! Some things that were natural in the old testament are spiritual in the New Testament. The OT is a type and shadow of the NT What was an ingredient in the OT is a season in the NT. Because we have not been taught how God develops divine enablement, we don’t know how to respond to difficult times. The anointing is a change agent. When an anointed person walked into an environment they have the ability to change it. The problem is that most Christians are not walking in an anointing so they don't change the environment, the environment changes them! David was anointed to be King, but on his way to the throne the journey took him through the Cave of Adullam. Adullam means hiding place, but it also means place of the squeeze! Sometimes God will hide you in the place of the squeeze in order to squeeze everything of you thats not like him out… David changed the men around him instead of allowing them to change him! Jesus on His journey to the right hand of God had to go through the Garden of Gethsemane. Gethsemane means olive press! With every new level of anointing there has to be a squeezing! We’ve been taught anything good is God and anything bad is the devil… This is true, but sometimes we have difficulty discerning good from bad. Everything good comes from God and everything bad comes from the enemy. But we have to be careful that we discern a situation before we label a situation. A promotion that takes you away from your family and recks your marriage is not good and a betrayal that pushes you into your destiny is not bad! ➡Jesus needed Judas to do his part. Judas propelled Jesus into fulfillment of His Destiney! Myrrh comes from a tree. Myrrh is not a fruit but a sap that flows from the trunk. The thing that makes the myrrh tree strange to scientists and biologists is that it has no particular season of bloom. No one knows when the sap is going to run. You can come by day and the tree if fine and the next it be dripping with sap! Have you ever been walking through life, everything going great and the next day all hell brake loose! A bitter season will hit all of a sudden! But you can that every time a bitter season hits, your anointing is about to go to another level! Every individual tree has its own process. I can’t give you my anointing because I can’t give you my process. “I want a double portion of your anointing”… (You want me to pray for God to give you my anointing, ok. God, let every mentor that comes in their life betray or let them down. Cause people who declared to love them and be called to serve with them leave them and break their hearts… ) They agent of your bitter time does not know the agenda of The Lord. You can not allow the bitter season to distort your perspective. 20 But she said to them, “Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went out full, and the Lord has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?” Don't call me by my position, call me by condition! She was bitter with God! Stop blaming God for the condition your decisions put you in! You can not be bitter with God and anointed by God!

The Future Kingdom: Time of Restoration Millennial Kingdom and the New Heaven and EarthRevelation 20-22September 1, 2019, MVCI. Introduction:A. U Thant, former Secretary General of the United Nations met with a group of 67scholars and statesmen addressing the issue of world peace. He asked them this:What element is lacking so that with all our skill and all our knowledge we stillfind ourselves in the dark valley of discord and enmity?1. They never were able to come up with an answer to this question!2. But the Scripture tells us what the missing element of world peace is; it isJesus and the setting up of His kingdom here on earth for 1,000 years. Akingdom of peace, prosperity and righteousness which God promised Hispeople, actually covenanted with His people! A kingdom that will be set upafter Jesus returns!• Turn to Revelation 20II. Millennial KingdomA. Six times in these few verses, we are told it is going to be 1,000 years long, thus,it is called the millennial kingdom also known as the Davidic kingdom, theforever kingdom, with a forever king who reigns forever!1. It is forever because it starts or is inaugurated with this kingdom here onearth for 1000 years but it continued on forever in the new heaven and earthforever and ever!B. It starts with Satan being bound for 1,000 years so that he can no longer deceivethe nations. Read v1-3.C. This kingdom will be populated at the start by every believer who was still aliveafter the return of Jesus. Then the population will grow as they have children andmany of their children will not become believers in Jesus, so much so that v8 saysthat by the end of the Millennium “the number of them will be like the sand of theseashore!” who come to war against the capital city, Jerusalem where Jesus willbe reigning from. So both believers and unbelievers will populate it.D. The government of this kingdom will be Jesus as king with His throne in thecapital Jerusalem (that we learn in the Old Testament) and those who will bereigning with Him are resurrected believers, Old Testament and church believers, and those who were martyred during the tribulation.1. Simply everyone who will be part of the first resurrection – that is all savedpeople of all time who have already died! The second resurrection is for alllost people of all time.2. Read 4a. In other words these are the people to whom God had committedand promised them the authority to reign in the kingdoma) Old Testament saints – Daniel 12: 2, 13b) The church - the promises to the churches to reign with Jesus, which wesaw in the letters to the seven churches.(1) Thyatira Revelation 2:26-27(2) Laodicea Revelation 3:213. Believers who were martyred during the tribulation. Read. V4b-6E. While we do not learn of the character of the kingdom in Revelation 20, we dolearn of it when we read God’s promises and the prophets in the Old Testament.1. Encourage you to go to church website to download my notes as there is a lothere and later in the message too that is too much to follow this quickly. Ireference the verses in those notes where I am getting this.2. This kingdom will last forever and will crush all the other kingdoms andbring them to an end (2 Samuel 7:12-19; Daniel 2:34-35, 44). Israel wouldagain possess their own land, the very land their fathers lived on, as onenation, but this time forever (Ezekiel 37:22, 25). A time of security, justice, peace and abundance. A time when there would be no more wars, people’slives will be as long as the life of a tree, their numbers would increase like aflock. Diseases and infirmities will be healed – the blind will see, the lamewill walk, the deaf will hear, and the mute will speak (Isaiah 29:18; 35:3-6;42:7). The waste places will be rebuilt, the wilderness and dessert willblossom and the land will become like the Garden of Eden. Even wildanimals will become safe and not hurt anyone (Isaiah 2:4; 11:6-9; 35:1-2; 65:20-23; Ezekiel 36:33-38).3. The people themselves would be full of joy and praise, forgivenand righteous, given a new heart and God’s Spirit will dwell within them andfill them along with doing extraordinary works (Isaiah 61:3; Ezekiel 36:25-27; Joel 2:28-29).4. As for the nations, those that are left after their judgment, their wealth will betaken for Israel (Zechariah 14:14) and they themselves will go to Jerusalemto worship the Lord (Zechariah 14:16), seek the Lord’s favor and be taughtby Him regarding His ways. (Isaiah 2:3) They will want to be identified withthe Jews because they will know that God is with them. (Zechariah 8:20-23)F. After this 1,000 years Satan will be let loose and will again deceive the nationsand lead them into a war where God will destroy them with fire from heaven, thenSatan will be thrown into the lake of fire to be tormented day and night forever. Then the great white throne will take place, and our present heaven and earth willbe destroyed• Then God will create a new heaven and new earth where He will dwell with Hispeople forever right here on a new earth.III. New Heaven and New EarthA. Yes, our future with God will be right here on earth, a new earth forever not on acloud up in the sky playing a harp. Read 21:1-3B. “What” and who will not be in heaven.1. What will not be - – death, mourning, crying, pain, (21:4) curse (22:3)hunger, thirst, heat (7:16-17)2. Who will not be - read – 21:83. The implications are huge here. Let me mention just a few –a) No more funerals graveyards, or tearful goodbyes, no more emotionalpain and depression over rejection, separation, abuse or loss, no morehospitals or cancer or deformities or diseases, no more migraineheadaches or need for pain killers and no more health insurance, no morefood pantries or food stamps, no more sin to affect people, theirrelationships, their work or the earth. The earth will be fully productiveand beautiful.b) That means we will never again suffer persecution, mocking or conflictof beliefs or values with those who are unbelievers, nothing shameful, vile, detestable, unpleasant will be there, no news reports telling us aboutmurders that happened in the big cities, we can walk the streets safelyand without fear, no more adultery, rape or sexual abuse, no moredemonic influence through witchcraft or drugs, you can trust anythingand everything that is said, there will be no shaky deals ormisrepresentations; and God will be the greatest love of everyone that isthere. No one will ever put anything or anyone above God and His willfor them. They will love Him with all their hearts, all their souls, alltheir minds and strength, and they will love their neighbor as themselves.C. What will we do? “Serve” him and reign with Him forever – Read 22:3,51. In Matthew 25, we learn that we will be assigned responsibilities in light ofour faithfulness to the responsibilities that we had here on earth.2. In Luke 19, we learn that we will actually have authority over different citiesin the future dependent upon how faithfully we steward the money, possessions and spiritual gifts that God has given to us here on earth.D. Let’s take a quick look at what the New Jerusalem will be like. Read 9-11.1. Walls and gates. Read v122. Foundation stones – Read v14a) Interesting to note that even in the eternal state there is still a cleardistinction between Israel and the church imprinted into the city3. Then he tells us the measurements of the city are 1500 miles in each length, width and height. The walls are 72 yards high.4. Listen to what the foundation stones will be adorned with – God is evengoing to decorate the foundation stones! V19-20. Reada) After service special treat – my friend Hans has a table with all 12 of thegems that will adorn the foundation stones so you can see them!b) This is a must see! Amazing the work and effort, he put into getting thestones and in setting them up for us to see.5. Listen to what the gates will be made of Read v21a) Largest pearl to date found was 14 pounds and just over 9 inchesb) Each gate a single pearl that will take a big oyster or a supernatural act ofGod!6. There also will be no need for the temple or the sun and the moon to givelight. Read v22-24E. Finally, we get a close up look of the throne and a river that comes out from it andwe see a tree of life! Listen to Rev 22:1-21. Fruita) Bears 12 different kinds of fruitb) Yields its fruit every month (I thought there was no time in eternity?)2. Leaves for the healing of the nations – Who are the nations? What do theyneed healing for? Don’t ask me ask Josh he can tell you.IV.ClosingA. Let’s celebrate this great future hope of ours! Josh

Redefined: Discipleship Matt 28:16-20 // September 9, 2018 Introduction: We just finished a series called Better Together. We are starting a series today that we could have called Better Together on Steroids but instead we are a calling it Redefined! Our goal is to go back and rediscover how the Bible has already defined us as Christians/Believers and that is we as believers are disciples! a) Acts 11:26 b) Biblically a Christian is a disciple and a disciple is a Christian. They are the same thing. c) Disciples are not a special class of Christians who are the Navy Seals of Christians! d) The real question is “are we living like a disciple or not?” In this series we will see that one of our core identifying marks is that of a disciple, that is who we are not someone to become, and we will learn what implications that has upon our walk with the Lord. The passage I want to look at this morning is in Matt 28 and is called... The Great Commission Context – Jesus had died and had risen again and sent word to the disciples that he wanted to meet them at a certain mountain in Galilee. Jesus tells them that all authority in heaven and earth has been given to Him. He has the right to rule and command everyone in heaven and earth. Then we find the word therefore which means in light of this authority this is what we should do! What Jesus commands us to do, the heart of this mission is found in v19-20 1. The structure of the passage is very simple a) V19-20 is the command/mission b) V20b is the promise – promise of His presence with us to carry out this mission. c) Read v18-20 The structure of the command is not as clear in the English but it jumps out to you and slaps you in the face in Greek a) There is one imperative/command in this passage – make disciples b) And there are three participles, which define for us the way we make disciples. (1) Go – simply evangelism – go and make lost people disciples in every place on earth (2) Baptize – identify them publically as a disciple of the Triune God (3) Teach – the lifetime process of a believer growing as a disciple. So this morning we see a biblical and balanced view of discipleship. Discipleship redefined is not just something that is done to Christians but also has to do with the non-Christians as well. Next week I want to redefine just what a disciple is but for this first week in the series, I want to share some of my story over many years as a disciple and what God has been teaching and with what God has been challenging me! III. Pat’s story as a disciple My journey of discipleship which can be summarized as a very slow and gradual shift in focus from information to transformation, from materials to people, from teaching to entrusting, from large to small, from programs to a movement, from focusing only upon believers to believers and the lost! My discipleship journey really started during the early years of my Christian life while in the military as I got my first taste of the impact a person can have upon you if they get up close to you A retired pastor named Pop Reed would meet with military men during the week then have us all over for dinner on Sunday at his house. a) While he guided me in my early days with wise counsel, he instilled in me a simple phrase that has guided my life since then and has protected me from much trouble in my early days as a Christian until now. The phrase – “the Spirit of God will never lead contrary to the Word of God” b) You have no idea how many times that phrase has protected me from ungodly counsel even from Christians and even from my own thoughts and desires! In college I was involved in a college ministry that legalistically put pressure on everyone to shake their head the same way, say the same things and act the same way everyone else did if you were truly spiritual. a) God used a man named Ron Denison (have you ever heard that name Rachel Weaver) meeting me every week in the student union to teach me the freedom of grace and uniqueness of me just loving Jesus and being myself! b) As Rich Klemick would say, “you do you” that is the message that Ron impressed and me! As young married man, attending MVC Kim and I approached an elder and asked him if he would disciple us. a) We met every Monday night for a few years as we would just open up the Bible every week and he would speak to us out of the word and his life. b) He is the one who taught us a life-changing pattern of not trying to squeeze time with God through his word into our busy schedules but rather build your schedule around your time with God. (1) That turned our spiritual lives, schedules, and activities upside down for the good! My biggest taste of the impact that a person up close and personal can make on you came from my predecessor Pastor Bill Johnson. a) We met every Monday morning for years just talking about our personal lives, walk with God and ministry. b) The last few years of his ministry his hearing became so bad that the heart of my ministry was being his ears for him so I went everyplace he went to serve him in that way. c) This allowed me to experience the truth we have often heard “some things are better caught than taught” I saw what life and ministry looked like in flesh and blood through the life of a godly man! Things I learned in Bible college and seminary began to make sense as I watched them lived out in his life and had the chance to talk to him about how they worked for him So now, it was time for me to try to impact others with discipleship! 1. I developed my own material which I called my “equipping manual” which I tried to summarize from biblical passages what I thought to be essential to the ministry. I used this to meet with different groups of three men at a time to take them through it. It took me about two years and the goal was to equip these men for ministry. After that, I became the senior pastor because of the many responsibilities of preaching, many many managing years . and leading a church, discipleship fell to the side for A few years back, while on the first half of my sabbatical, one of the key questions that I was considering and praying about was “if there was only one thing that I could not fail at and to focus upon for the rest of my ministry what would it be?” a) During that time, God deeply impressed upon my heart the need to disciple. It was because of Mt 28, the Great Commission that He impressed upon me that I need to get back to the mission of making disciples not just preaching sermons on Sunday! Right after this time God spoke to me through Acts 6:4 a) Read b) The context of this verse is the widows were being overlooked in the serving of the food. This is a bold response – we will assign that to someone else because we need to be devoted to and not distracted from prayer and the Word! c) I learned the lesson between important and vital the hard way (1) My shoulder separation (2) Shoulder separation and heart attack of Jose’s mom d) Many important things go on at church but two things that are vital and essential for the church to live healthy it was God’s word and prayer! e) I felt at that time that I was so busy running the big machine called MVC church and all the many important things that go into a church. But I had left behind that which is most essential for its long-term health, discipleship - the mission that Jesus gave us! So when I got back from the sabbatical I started a group of eight men, primarily younger, that I called an equipping group. a) We met every other week for about two years and covered some of the material from my original manual I created and some main teaching from God’s word and some key skills necessary to minister. We had some very exciting and stimulating discussions but I was feeling deep inside that something was missing but not sure what it was. I felt it was not accomplishing what I had hoped for two reasons: a) First, eight men is too many to get close to and make any real personal impact in their lives. b) Secondly, I realized that I was teaching these men the truth but I was not entrusting to them the truth. Entrusting means, “to commit something to the care of someone else so that now they become responsible for it.” c) Read 2 Timothy 2:2 (1) I realized I was teaching them but I was not sharing with them the vision that they are now responsible for these truths to pass on to other faithful men who could pass it on to others. (2) It was more than “here are the teachings now go and be blessed” now it’s “here are the teachings now go and bless someone else with them!” So then I decided to start a group with two of men that was structured in such a way that we could “entrust” truths to them they could pass on to others. There were three of us who each recruited three other men. We met together as twelve to learn the basic truths Then we each met separately with our three so we could do a bit more of the life on life and not just large group teaching. Then through the Great Commission God impressed upon me that just as big of a part of discipleship is bringing the gospel to the lost and not just focusing on developing the believer. So God started to grow a greater sensitivity in my heart to the lost Since that time, I worked with a small group of elders to develop some materials to share the gospel with the lost and some material we could use to train believers to reach the lost. So I trained some people who could train others and we began a series of small groups where we could learn more about sharing the gospel and our testimony! F. The last number of years I have been meeting with three men as we together have been gaining a greater vision for discipleship as Jesus taught it and allowing our lives and walk to rub off on one another and seeking to impact others! Now my heart and the heart of the staff and boards is for MVC to become a culture of discipleship where everyone is a disciple who seeks to impact others, both lost and believers for Jesus Christ! So in this series I hope to: Clear up some of the modern day confusion about discipleship and from the Bible redefine just what a disciple is, that is who we are as believers and what we do according to the mission Jesus gave us to make disciples! There are very few topics more central to our lives and church. Secondly, I hope that the Spirit of God will take the word of God and write it so deeply upon our lives that we become a church of disciples of Jesus who intentionally and relationally make other disciples of Jesus!
