Send us a textIn this episode, I share some thoughts on a topic dear to my heart. I am very excited about it because it is about the heart! All that I am learning about and experiencing relates to my current direction in life, which is an adventure in becoming a Certified Life Coach centered on the heart. I have never considered being a Life Coach before, yet a few months ago, I got a strong impression that this is what I need to do, so here I am, taking another step in my faith journey.  Since starting this program, I've learned so much about heart connections, not only to my heart but also to others. This knowledge helps me recognize how to be more in tune with my feelings and intuition. In Baptist De Pape's book "The Power of the Heart," I read:"Our very first heartbeat begins spontaneously."…”The beating starts the moment that specialized heart cells form and multiply in the fetus. The cells beat even before the whole heart has formed. And they beat in unison." Knowing that the heart is the first organ to develop before any other parts or organs of the body is exciting. This tiny vital organ has a rhythmic beat that continues to grow, becoming a big part of our bodies' development.Neal Donald Walsch said:  "The beat of your heart is the energy of life itself.”…"The secret of the human heart is that it contains not only your identity but God's, wrapped up in one."  Many scriptures refer to a heart. One of them comes from the Bible in the book of Mathew 5:8Jesus said: "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." -  Matthew 5:8What does it mean to Have a Pure Heart? Have you ever wondered about having a pure heart, dear listener? Here is an answer for me and perhaps for you: A pure heart is charity. It means I am forgiving, patient, and not critical or judgmental of others. It means I look at others with compassion and grace, the way Jesus looks at me. When I know I am in that space, of having a pure heart, I am willing to connect and understand others.   Robin Johnson, my mentor and coaching instructor, wrote a book titled "The Heart of the Gospel," which beautifully describes the five states of the heart. Here are the descriptions of the five hearts:A Hardened Heart - is a heart of anger, hate, malice, pride, animosity, judgment, absence of love, and hurting others.A Broken Heart - A heart of grief, sadness, wounded, anguished, depressed, lonely, heavy and in pain.A Disconnected Heart - A heart of numbness, fear, emotionlessness, pain avoidance, apathy, and no passion for life.A Faint Heart - is weary from life's challenges, depleted, disheartened, hopeless, exhausted. A Pure Heart -  is the Heart of Christ, a heart in a state of oneness: One with self, God, and humanity. It is a heart of charity, grace, forgiveness, compassion, joy, and acceptance. In closing of the message, I share one of my compositions, "In My Heart."www.kasiasmusic.comwww.kasiasfaithjourney.comhttps://www.facebook.com/kasiasfaithjourney/

We're back with this mini series of Talent Showcase episodes focused on people in marketing, communications, PR, and allied fields who're looking for their next opportunity. You'll hear their stories, successes, and how they can help their next employer or client. Today, I'm joined by Paula Lowe (https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulajlowe/). Paula is the founder and principal of The PR Table, a marketing communications consulting firm, where all of marketing has a seat at the table. Although Paula's expertise is in media relations and communication strategy, her experience encompasses all aspects of marketing communications, from email marketing, content development, and social media to website creation and maintenance. Paula has more than 15 years experience, having worked with large multinational corporate entities and small startup ventures within a wide range of industries, including technology, Financial Services, Health Care and Medical, Health IT, Supply Chain, Non profits, and Supply Chain and Logistics. Transcript Mark Reed-Edwards: Paula, it's good to have you on the show. Welcome. Paula Lowe: It's great to be here, Mark. Thank you. Mark Reed-Edwards: So, I just told your life story, but can you tell me more about yourself beyond what I just shared, your background and career path? Paula Lowe: Sure. It's always fun to sort of remember the story. I actually went to school in Boston and graduated with an associate degree in hospitality management. I quickly got a job at the Ritz Carlton in a supervisory role, but realized that it was not going to afford me the opportunity to complete my degree, which was very important back then. So I transferred and got a job as an admin assistant at an environmental engineering firm. And about a year in, I transferred from the facilities department to the corporate communications department. And that was it. I fell in love with corpcomm. I began to realize that my natural storytelling and relatability with people was something I could leverage in a career that I would find satisfying and challenging. So I got in touch then with our PR consultant that was brought in. My boss said, "I'm going to have you work with our PR consultant, help tell some stories. I think you'd be good at it." I said, "Great." And that was it. From there, I left the environmental engineering firm and I joined Lois Paul Partners back up in Lexington. I've had my career in public relations ever since. Mark Reed-Edwards: So what is one of your most important career accomplishments, do you think? Paula Lowe: I have to say, working for Hebrew Senior Life in Boston, which is a non profit. They have a hospital license for Hebrew Rehab Center. And they have eight or nine senior housing locations throughout Greater Boston. And I was there at the onset and throughout COVID. And that was a very, very challenging, stressful, difficult time. But it was also a really great learning opportunity because HSL is a leader in senior care. And the then- CEO, he's since retired, but he was a real inspiration to see how he handled things and we were able to bring them through that crisis really successfully. Mark Reed-Edwards: So what do you think you can offer your next employer or client? Paula Lowe: I think that the years of experience I have have led me to be, although I am a PR specialist, if you will, my forte is media relations and analyst relations, securing those relationships, but you know, there's a breadth of services and strategy that I can bring to my clients, so relationship building, persistence. One of the things I found as a PR person is that we have to be persistent. And if a client or I want a relationship with a particular member of the media, I will make it happen. It just might take some time and some creativity. I really find a lot of inspiration in trying to find different ways to do things. I'm not a believer in "this is the way we've always done it so this is the way we should continue to do it." So if my clients are open to new ways of looking at things. I bring a lot of creativity and ideas that we can implement. And of course, strategy. I've done that for most of my career. Nothing is done in a bubble. There's always a strategic reason and business objective we're trying to achieve. Mark Reed-Edwards: I've never really done PR. I've been in areas around PR and talked to the press on occasion. But persistence is a quality for most of the people I know in PR who are great at their jobs. Because they build relationships over years. And you have to be persistent to do that. Paula Lowe: Absolutely. And it's a fine line. Some of the relationships I built early on in my career, I'm still friends with those reporters and editors. And I think one of the things that sets me apart, and maybe even it's a generational thing at this point too, but I never went to a reporter or editor with a pitch that I had to read off a sheet. I made sure I understood it. I made sure I understood the business value of what we were offering, and if they didn't accept it, I always asked why. I said I know that time is tight, but what am I missing here? Because I am trying to be a good resource. I do my research. If I'm missing, I need to know what I'm missing and why. And sometimes they would tell me, sometimes they wouldn't, but often they'd say, "You know, that's a great question. Nobody asks that. It's not totally off the mark. It's the timing or it's this." And that's valuable information to take back to a client as well. Why the pitches aren't working or why the client thinks it's a great story, but maybe the media doesn't. And then we find a different way to go back to that person with what they can use. Mark Reed-Edwards: Yeah, and finding out their editorial calendar and just partnering up with them over the course of months or even years so that you can align with what the reporter's needs are and those reporters are stretched thinner than ever now. Paula Lowe: Oh, gosh, for sure. The landscape has changed significantly and it's very challenging. But you can still do it. I'm doing it right now for a client. I'm having a lot of fun. It's a really unique auto industry training software company that I'm working with and it's a lot of fun and I'm making those relationships on their behalf and it's just been great because you can still do that. It just takes a little longer. Mark Reed-Edwards: Yeah. And how do you---I'll ask one last question. How do you work with your client to set their expectations that they're not going to be in the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times next week. Paula Lowe: Isn't that the age old question? Mark Reed-Edwards: Yeah. B You know, it's just a matter of being very honest and direct and saying, " When you have that story I'm happy to tell it, but you're not there right now, or you know, it's gonna take some time to secure those relationships and make those connections." One of the challenges, too, is the way people move around. Many of the people I worked with just a few short years ago are now in different roles. Still within the media landscape, but different roles. It might mean that I need to get reconnected or connected with someone new. And those things do take time. So I just sort of set the expectation up front and let them know that there are certain criteria that you have to meet to get into a big publication like that, or even Forbes, Fortune, those kinds of publications, and those take time. They're not an overnight thing. Mark Reed-Edwards: Well, Paula, you've got a great story to tell for yourself, and thanks for joining me. I hope this podcast helps you find your next great gig. Paula Lowe: Thank you, Mark. I appreciate being here. Mark Reed-Edwards: Well, that's it for this mini series. Together, we've met some extraordinary people. Annual Missing Person's Day Greater San Antonio 2024Hey there, fellow HOMkins! I'm excited to give you all an update on the February 3rd Missing Persons Day Event in San Antonio. It was an incredible experience and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share it with you. One of the highlights of the event was getting to meet Nina Brooks, the CEO of Search and Support San Antonio.  My friend Robin Johnson, who is the aunt of Armani Dante Morgan, an unsolved murder victim, was also there with me (Unsolved Homicide of Armani D. Morgan ~ Robin Johnson FULL INTERVIEW). The walls were filled with Missing Person posters and banners, serving as a powerful reminder of the countless individuals who have gone missing, been murdered, or are part of unsolved cases in San Antonio alone. It was a sobering sight to see names like Lina Kihl, Pauline Diaz, Amalia Garza, James Preston Davis, Khadija Derry, Ray Richardson, and Meagan Gonzales, among thousands of others, all still missing or unsolved. It was a bittersweet event, as we came together to honor and remember those who are still missing or have been victims of unsolved cases. But it was also a day of hope, as we saw the community come together to support each other and work towards finding answers and justice for these individuals and their families. I was particularly moved by the presence of organizations like Search and Support San Antonio, who work tirelessly to bring closure to families and give a voice to those who can no longer speak for themselves.I urge all of you to take a moment to reflect on the names I mentioned earlier, and the thousands of others who are still missing or have unsolved cases. Let's keep their memories alive and continue to spread awareness, in the hopes that one day, we will have answers and justice for all. Until then, let's continue to support each other and work towards making our communities safer for everyone.Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience at the Missing Persons Day Event. A Post-9/11 Veteran Town Hall Discussion with veterans Gil Barndollar and Robin Johnson, Veteran Fellowship Program Fellows Matthew Brown and Claudia Flores led by Hoover Fellow Jacquelyn Schneider. One of the greatest challenges for the All Volunteer Force is how to reintegrate a professional, volunteer military back into civilian society.  For many previous generations, this re-integration was supported by veterans organizations, like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which created a space for veterans to share experiences as they re-started their civilian life.  However, the post 9/11 veteran generation has new challenges both in re-connecting with civilian life and in creating bonds between post 9/11 veterans that create positive societal impacts.  The rise of social media as well as the diversity and the volunteer nature of this generation means that Vietnam-era structures and institutions designed for veterans may not work for building social bonds between 9/11 veterans and their communities.  How does the post 9/11 veteran build social capital among each other?  How do they connect with their communities?  How can the post 9/11 veteran experience build social cohesion not only between veterans and civilians but also in the broader civil society?   Tuesday, February 20, 2024 – Denver, CO Featuring Gil Barndollar | Senior Research Fellow, Center for the Study of Statesmanship; USMC veteran Matthew Brown | Hoover Veteran Fellow; President and CEO, Chimney Trail; USN Veteran Claudia Flores | Hoover Veteran Fellow; Policy and Planning Director, Virginia Department of Veteran Services; USN Veteran Robin Johnson | CEO, Best Medicine Brigade; President, HEAL*ARIOUS; USA veteran Moderated by Dr. Jacquelyn Schneider | Hoover Fellow, post-9/11 Veteran, USAFR

BEACH DAY, 14min., USA Directed by Robin Johnson A newlywed unwinds with a solo day at the beach full of peculiar activities. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26492794/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt_i_2 https://www.instagram.com/beachdaythefilm/ Get to know the filmmaker: At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, my partner Casey and I were on the hunt for isolated, outdoor activities. We found ourselves on a beach in Rockaway, NY and discovered an abandoned, graffitied, once-building on one of the smaller beach lots. Shells, rocks, flowers and other items had been arranged carefully and intentionally on the ground, and to me, it looked like a beautiful, hyper-feminine altar. I started wondering what the story was behind this altar – why would someone hide out in this dilapidated building on the beach and perform a sort of ritual? When we came home, I wrote the first draft in about 20 minutes, and Casey encouraged me to keep developing the script and make the film. I'd been a professional actor for about 10 years, and had felt the quiet itch to jump into directing for a long time, and he is a cinematographer, so from there, it came together quite naturally. Papier-mâché blockbuster filmmaker Roger Corman arrives at the Pals' campfire with a proposition to adapt one of HP Lovecraft's novellas into a movie of an Edgar Allan Poe story, in our latest teaser micro-episode. Submitted for the Approval of the Midnight Pals' first season begins releasing full episodes weekly from October 31st. CAST ROGER CORMAN – Bitter KarellaEDGAR ALLAN POE – Rodrigo BorgesDEAN KOONTZ – Wren MontgomeryHP LOVECRAFT – Robin JohnsonCLIVE BARKER – Sister IndicaMARY SHELLEY – Rebecca D'SouzaScript and production by Robin Johnson, including material adapted from tweets by Bitter Karella. Notes concerning Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe's HP Lovecraft's The Haunted Palace: The real-life Roger Corman did indeed make a movie adaptation of Lovecraft's short novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward which was released under the title Edgar Allan Poe's The Haunted Palace (1963) so that it could be marketed as part of Corman's infamous "Poe Cycle". Edgar Allan Poe did write a six-stanza poem called The Haunted Palace, which has nothing in common with Corman's movie except that Vincent Price's character quotes four lines of it at some point for no particular reason. Poe's name is misspelled as "Edgar Allen Poe" in the film's credits. It's Corman in his most truly Cormanic episode.Midnight Pals characters are written as parodies and do not necessarily represent their real-life counterparts.Find the Midnight Pals at midnightpals.com, on twitter at @midnight_pals, or on bluesky at @midnightpals.bsky.social. Rivka and Frank are joined by filmmaker and activist Robin Johnson to talk about Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's deranged rom-com You've Got Mail, arguing that the movie's plot is essentially a pro-capitalist psychological thriller about a woman who is manipulated and subdued by her corporate oppressor. They discuss how film's characters are emblematic of 90s liberalism that uses racially coded language and casually jokes about falling in love with fascist dictators, and how the character of Joe Fox is a manipulative pathological liar whose only redeemable quality is that he's played by Tom Hanks.
