Áine speaks with Andy Fermo Co-founder of Invisible Injuries, a support service for veterans and their families who have been affected by their service and PTSD. Andy talks about his personal experience of service with deployments to Afghanistan in 2007 and 2009 with the SAS. He survived the impact of an I.E.D roadside bomb (Improvised Explosive Device), witnessing many traumatic incidences including the deaths and major injuries of his colleagues, experiencing first-hand “life outside the wire”. Andy was medically discharged in 2010 and later diagnosed with PTSD. At the end of 2018, the culmination of a number of unforeseen circumstances resulted in Andy being at an “all-time low” along with his family they were essentially homeless. It was these experiences and learning how to live with PTSD that inspired Andy and his wife Claire to establish Invisible Injuries.

Do you think you may qualify for a mental health VA disability? Join us for our first episode in our mental health mini-series. Learn how becoming service-connected for mental health is more challenging than it seems. Today, Robin and one of Trajecor's top mental health specialists, Lucas, discuss how PTSD is different from other VA Mental Health disability claims. PTSD is a very specific disorder that stems from witnessing a traumatic event in a person's life. Many Veterans are briefed on the effects of PTSD before leaving the service, but it is not the only disorder tied to a stressful event. The big takeaway? Many trauma-related mental health disorders don't classify under PTSD. PTS or PTSD. You may have heard of it, but, did you know that many of our first responders and veterans suffer from it? During the service, many of the veterans (or almost all of them) had to see things that may be shocking for many of us. Today's guest, Tom Voss, has seen the most horrible tragedies and because of that, he developed PTS which led him to stumble upon the addictions field but he found the light in meditation. In this episode, we dove into subjects such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how this can affect really hard the people that suffer it, how veterans and first responders deal with PTSD, how meditation can take you out of addictions; the subjects that not everybody talks about. About Tom Voss: Tom Voss served on active duty in the United States Army for three years, from 2003 to 2006. He served as an infantry scout in the battalion scout-sniper platoon. In October of 2004, Tom was deployed to Mosul, Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. After returning home, Tom struggled with reintegration and was diagnosed with PTSD in 2008. After being pushed to the brink of suicide, Tom knew he had to do something to help himself heal. In 2013, he teamed up with fellow combat veteran Anthony Anderson to plan and execute a 2,700-mile trek from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Los Angeles, California. This journey was captured on film by Emmy®-nominated documentary filmmaker, Michael Collins. The film, which has enjoyed theatrical releases in New York and Los Angeles and been screened at dozens of film festivals nationwide, is called Almost Sunrise. In November 2017 Almost Sunrise was broadcast nationally as part of the P.O.V. documentary series on PBS, resulting in an Emmy nomination. Tom is the co-author of the memoir, Where War Ends: A Combat Veteran's 2,700-Mile Journey to Heal ― Recovering from PTSD and Moral Injury through Meditation, Published by New World Library, October 2019 Connect with Tom: Website | Themeditatingvet.com Twitter | @Tom__Voss Instagram | @thomas_voss0 What you'll hear: 3:38 Tom talks about how Ojai, California is dealing with the pandemic. 4:44 Who's Tom Voss and what is he building to impact the world. 6:05 Tom explains how trauma can affect humans. 7:22 Tom talks about PTSD after being part of the army and the addictions that came with it. 11:14 Tom's experiences with the VA. 15:20 Veterans PTSD during service and how they can be replaced for having it. 17:20 How veterans deal with PTSD after the service and try to keep a normal life. 18:39 Tom explains how PTSD is developed and can affect your life. 20:17 Tom's first time doing meditation and how it shifted his life. 26:58 How meditation turned into a daily routine for Tom. 28:47 Meditation and the masculine world. 30:13 How to reach the perfect meditation. 31:49 Tom's thoughts about how veterans should use meditation to heal. 36:36 The difference between situational PTS and developmental PTSD 37:30 What does 'Moral Injury' mean 38:54 Why we should protect our peace at all costs. 40:31 How we can use meditation to understand and heal traumas. 42:52 How Tom overcame the PTSD. 45:27 The other components that helped Tom overcome PTSD. 48:00 Tom's recommendation for the people that are dealing with the PTS because of covid. 50:09 How to support Tom. 51:35 Where to find Tom. I got the chance to interview Chris Chambers recently. I saw him on a video Mike Robinson posted during the 100, 000, 000 million mg CBD giveaway and was impressed with his story. In our first conversation, (of which it took 3 to get this audio! :)), Chris mentioned being a Quaker. I immediately felt a connection as my own father was immersed in this philosophy/denomination towards the end of his life and the tenets of kindness and value in every human being despite any external circumstances were a huge part of his mantra. The same can be said for Chris, which you will hear echoed throughout this episode. Chris Chambers is a generous, humble, living piece of art! He gave us details on his life since his early childhood, through his experiences in the army, and through many rough patches that he’s been through. He truly has shocking experiences, and now he is happy to be breathing and being able to do good to this world. Today I talk to Simon Maryan, founder of Icarus Online, a support organisation for uniformed personnel, including Military, Veterans, Emergency Services and Prison Staff.Within this episode we learn more about the amazing work that Icarus provides and what it is they actually do, we talk about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the Veteran communities insistence to blanket blame all mental ill health to PTSD without accepting the debilitating impact that Depression and other Anxiety Disorders can have, with many signs and symptoms mimicking PTSD. Then finally, we talk about what people can do to get support, how partners and family members can best assist their loved ones and the importance of the partners themselves gaining support, to prevent them becoming a statistic themselves through concentrating so much on their loved one!Our show sponsor is Dylogic - https://dylogic.co.uk/, who we thank greatly for making this possible, I thank Simon Maryan for giving up his time to appear on the show and being there for me personally and I urge anyone who felt their own situations related to what we discussed, or are concerned about themselves or a loved one to reach out for help. Our guest today is Janine Sagert – intrepid consciousness explorer, film producer, a corporate consultant for some of the largest and most influential companies in America, and a life-long social justice and military veterans advocate. Our conversation today covers a wide spectrum of cutting edge, paradigm-shifting issues. We discuss her long history living and working with military veterans, the use of psychedelics to successfully treat mental illness and PTSD, the future of mental health in America, her early adoption of meditative practices and yogic techniques in the corporate consulting she pioneered in the mid-1970s, to her favorite ashram in India where she retreats every year. Her distinctive life has uniquely equipped her to tell the story of combat veterans suffering from suicidal PTSD and their transformative healing journeys with psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and medical marijuana. This is the story which is told in the highly acclaimed documentary film, From Shock to Awe which she co-produced with the award-winning cinematographer, Luc Cote, and Kevin Krause. Her remarkable life and cutting-edge achievements embody an uncommon blend of academic and professional education, research, training, and personal on the ground experience with deep spirituality — as well as a huge heart and indomitable spirit.Commenting on what prompted her to take on a project of this magnitude she said, "It broke my heart to learn that so many of our veterans are experiencing PTSD and that most of them are not getting relief from their suffering. Twenty-two veteran suicides a day! This is truly a national disgrace. I had to do something to help, especially knowing that in the course of my life I had accumulated the skills, experience, and knowledge to do so."Janine is a modern-day polymath and a polyglot who speaks five languages, (Spanish, Marathi, Hindi, German, and English) and world traveler, her own backstory provides many points of connection and empathy with military veterans. Janine is a self-described “army brat” who grew up on military bases around the world. She's a psychologist whose extensive academic career focused on clinical psychology and anthropology and how various elements of culture influence mental health. Her profoundly transformative experiences with psychedelics, lead her to a lifelong dedication to exploring and expanding her own consciousness through spiritual practices such as self-inquiry and meditation. Going where precious few Western women have gone, she traveled more times than she can remember to India and remote areas in the Himalayas to live and study with a variety of yogis and mystics, further deepening her direct experience of higher states of consciousness.Academically, Dr. Sagert earned a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, in “Culture and Mental Health” with a specialty in Altered States of Consciousness and Psychological Resilience. She also spent two years as part of a Harvard University School of Public Health research team investigating stress factors around the world. Professionally, she founded Time Out, Inc. in 1976 and subsequently provided pioneering consulting and coaching services to a wide spectrum of organizations in the areas of stress management, leadership, and optimal performance. She conducted more than 1,000 seminars and coached more than 500 executives in companies throughout the U. S., Europe, and Asia. This is a remarkably candid conversation with an incredibly down-to-earth and compassionate person who has a life-long career of pioneering consciousness work that has changed the way we look at ourselves and how we live and work with each other in the world. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. To directly contact our hosts, visit their respective websites:https://www.meditatenow.net/ - S

After serving four years as an infantryman in the United States Marine Corp, including a combat deployment in Iraq where he was hit by four IEDs in four months causing a traumatic brain injury, Richard Casper returned home suffering from post-traumatic stress. That is, until he discovered the healing power of music and art. After experiencing first-hand the profound impact they had on his own healing, Richard co-founded CreatiVets in 2013 to help other veterans. CreatiVets' art programs foster self-expression in a way that allows veterans to transform their stories of trauma and struggle into an art form that can inspire and motivate continued healing. The madman was virtually invisible and digitally unknown. A deranged individual with no apparent motive, a heart of stone, and a brain that was corrupt and corroded at the core. There is a special place in hell with eternal and massive suffering where Stephen Paddock will join the likes of previous twisted and satanic lunatics. The human suffering and carnage is unthinkable. The pain and uncontrollable desire to be united with lost family members. Lives that were cut short in the blink of an eye. A scene that was all to surreal. This madman terrorist opened fire with a steady stream of bullets on an outdoor festival that turned laughter and love into our worst nightmare. The deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Yet none of this truly defined that moment. This moment in time is defined by real heroes. People helping people. Strangers who became instant friends. People unknown, but placed there by the hand of God - to help thy fellow man. The President summed it up beautifully "When the worst of humanity strikes, the best of humanity responds." There are many many unanswered questions. Was this just a matter of time? Did Las Vegas see this coming? Do experts think GUN CONTROL will change some of these outcomes? What could a possible motive be? What type of people commit these type of mass shooting crimes? Does the media coverage help or hurt a tragedy such as this? After 9/11, airport safety changed dramatically - will hotel security change after this tragedy? I have turned to three incredibly talented experts for answers. Lt Randy Sutton is a 34 year Law Enforcement veteran. He is Host of Blue Lives Radio on America Out Loud and provides expert analysis on tv and radio network's nationally. Lt Sutton lives in Las Vegas and is retired from the Las Vegas Police department. Dr. Ron Martinelli is a forensic criminologist and retired police detective with the San Jose (CA) Police Department. At least 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and many of those affected turn to drugs and alcohol to cope. In addition, the physical stress of war and service can lead to physical injuries that require pain management, and that can unfortunately lead to substance misuse as well. This week’s guest Allyson Bowers a military … Read more about this episode...
