Meet Colette Williams, a fellow digital nomad and friend of Jeff, Marisa and Diego. Colette started working remote soon out of college as a sourcing specialist for a sales and marketing company. But at this point she hadn't started traveling yet. She worked from her parents' home for a couple years, then decided she wanted to jump headfirst into a travel lifestyle. Her very first digital nomad trip was to Bolivia on a Wifi Tribe chapter where she met Jeff, Marisa and Diego for the first time. Bolivia is no walk in the park for a new digital nomad - the flights are a difficult, the wifi can be spotty, and the altitude can make you sick. It's traveling on hard mode. But as Colette describes, her experience with making community and challenging herself on a level she had never challenged herself before flipped a switch in her brain and made her decide that this was the life for her. Listen in to Coco's episode to learn about what it's like to live in Istanbul, Florianópolis, and Cape Town. Coco also talks about how to manage difficult time zone work schedules, and how to stay disciplined when surrounded with friends planning constant outings and events. She also talks about how to maintain a healthy work life while proving to your company that you can be an accountable employee while traveling. Listen in to hear Coco talk about some of the top highs and lows of living as a digital nomad, like her scariest adventure involving an ATV flying off a cliff, and an ultimate low when her Airbnb host didn't tell her that the washing machine was going to pour water all over the laundry room. Being a digital nomad has an insane amount of positive aspects. You'll get an amazing amount of culture, adventures, language skills, food experiences, etc. But if you don't find a community of likeminded people, it can get vey lonely. And one of the potential best positive aspects of being a digital nomad is finding community and making lifelong friends to share your experiences with. Fortunately, you don't have to go it alone! Aside from finding ad hoc communities on Nomadlist and social networks, there are companies who help foster connections. Ranging from hyper-coordinated to super-lax, Jeff, Diego and Marisa discussed seven communities that have a successful track record of attracting digital nomads. In this episode, they discuss: Wifi Tribe Remote Year Hacker Paradise NomadBase/ Nomad Cruise Outsite Selina Unsettled Note: Diego is a cofounder of Wifi Tribe, and both Marisa and Jeff are members of the company. We did our very best to be objective about a topic that is generally very subjective. In this episode we shared our experiences and anecdotal stories about each of the companies we know. Meet Danielle Lee, an ex-accountant for Xerox from the United Kingdom. Back in 2019, Xerox gave her three weeks off for her to travel (and work a tiny bit) from Peru. She left the trip loving life, and asked if she could do this “digital nomad thing” more often, but they told her that it was only going to be a one-off type of allowance. Bummer, but Danielle didn't give up her dream. She then doubled down and asked to go to Bali, to which they said “no, absolutely not.” At that point, she had decided this lifestyle absolutely needed to be a full-time thing. She then gave the company an ultimatum and as a result they changed the policy, letting her work as a digital nomad. She then joined Wifi Tribe because she was looking for community and flexibility WHILE traveling. From there she went to Puerto Escondido (where she and Jeff met) to Florianopolis, Brazil. And she's been traveling ever since. She even took a full 180 degree shift from her life as an accountant to a personal coach and employee of Wifi Tribe! In these unprecedented times, we here at WiFi Tribe thought it would be good to take a moment (or an hour) to reflect on what this pandemic has brought with it. Jordan Flagel and Amanda Scott sat down, virtually, from across the world to discuss their personal experiences trying to get home during border closures and uncertainty and what they've felt during mandatory self-isolation imposed upon them from their governments (as returning travellers). They also discuss what it means for people who now work remotely, what it might mean for people who can no longer work, and how devastating it will be if you or somebody close to you develop complications from the virus. Our hope is that this hour will be a chance to share in some of the experiences that others have no doubt felt, and can hopefully create a small feeling of togetherness and connectivity by relating to their experiences. We hope you are staying safe and doing your part to stop the spread, which definitely isn't easy for travellers and nomadic souls. We will get through this together! For photos, show notes, links, transcription and more visit: https://nomadpodcast.com/diego-bejarano-wifi-tribe/ Wifi Tribe enables nomadic travelers to post up in communal living situations around the world. Hear from co-founder Diego Bejarano about how it works. Diego Bejarano was in a rut and looking to shake things up by working remotely with a group of his friends. He sent out emails to 100 friends inviting everyone to experiment with this idea of living and working remotely in South America. The experiment proved successful and Wifi Tribe was born. Fast forward two years and Diego and his co-founder now run a service that brings location-independent workers together to be able to have a communal living and working experience while exploring the world. In this conversation Diego talks about the origin story of Wifi Tribe, their community-centric philosophy, the qualities that make great candidates for their program, how he uses anchors to be productive on the road, the role of diversity in the experience and more. We also get into interesting topics of intermittent fasting, cold showers and other body hacks. I hope you enjoy
