The Supreme Court’s Shadow Papers + Ex-Virginia Lt. Gov Fairfax Tragedy are today's stories. Listen for more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The show opens with a heartbreaking and disturbing tragedy out of Virginia, where former Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife before taking his own life, leaving their children without parents. Lawmakers across the state expressed shock, urging families facing domestic conflict to seek help, as details emerged about prior marital strain and calls for police intervention, reigniting national conversations around domestic violence and mental health. The cast also reacts to growing scrutiny around rapper Future, as court records and legal filings reveal a sharp contrast between his reported nine‑figure net worth and relatively low monthly child‑support payments—made possible, experts say, by strategic asset structuring and filing in states with capped child‑support guidelines. The Hot Spot turns to gospel star Tina Campbell, whose decades‑long marriage reportedly could not survive long‑standing tensions intensified by her public support of Donald Trump—a stance that insiders say created deep divides at home and within the faith community. And in one of the show’s most debated moments, Akon goes viral after openly defending his polygamous lifestyle, arguing that men and women are not “biologically equal” in relationships—a claim that sparked immediate backlash and a heated discussion on responsibility, culture, and modern relationships.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Friday, April 17th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Government Convicts Nearly 400 on Terrorism Charges A federal high court in Abuja, Nigeria, has convicted 386 people on terrorism charges in one of the largest mass convictions in recent times. Those convicted were linked to Islamic State West Africa Province or to Boko Haram, a deadly terrorist group founded in northern Nigeria, reports International Christian Concern. The convictions come as the Nigerian government faces significant pressure from the United States to curb terrorism within its borders and to more effectively protect vulnerable Christian communities caught up in the violence perpetrated by these Islamist terrorist groups. Reports indicate that the Muslim terrorists convicted received sentences ranging from five years to life in prison. Authorities originally charged 508 individuals. Two were acquitted, eight were discharged, and 112 cases were adjourned. Former Virginia Lt. Gov shot and killed wife & self in murder-suicide A Virginia police chief delivered disturbing news at a press conference yesterday about a murder-suicide, reports NewsNation. DAVIS: “Former Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife inside of their home and then shot and killed himself.” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said the husband and wife were found dead at their home in Annandale, Virginia, on Thursday. Former Lt. Gov. Fairfax was recently served some paperwork associated with an upcoming divorce court proceeding which led to the incident. While they were separated they were still living in the same home. Davis said the couple's two teenage children were at the home when Fairfax shot his wife, Cerina, “several times” before running to a different part of the house and turning the gun on himself. The shooting took place shortly after midnight, and police said one son called 911. Both Fairfax and his wife were pronounced dead at the scene. The police chief added, “Tragic for the children to lose both parents. Extra tragic for them to actually be in the home when it occurred.” ABC's Joy Behar: Jesus never claimed to be the Messiah On April 14th, Joy Behar, the self-professed agnostic on ABC's talk show The View, asserted that Jesus never claimed to be the Messiah, reports The Christian Post. BEHAR: “Jesus Himself did not run around saying, ‘I'm the Messiah. I'm the Messiah.'” SARA HAINES: "That's exactly what Jesus said!" BEHAR: "No he did not. Jesus was more modest than that. Jesus was not narcissistic like this guy [Trump]." HAINES: "When you are the Messiah, it's not narcissism to say it!" BEHAR: “Yes it is.” In John 4:25-26, Jesus had a conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well. “The woman said, ‘I know that Messiah' (called Christ) ‘is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.' Then Jesus declared, ‘I, the one speaking to you—I am He.'” In John 16:15-17, Jesus asked His disciples, “‘But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you… for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in Heaven.'” And in Mark 14:61-62, the high priest questioned Jesus and asked Him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” Jesus replied, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One.” More U.S. young men attend church More young men in America report that they attend church, or other houses of worship, at least monthly, according to a Gallup poll released Thursday, reports The Washington Post. Forty percent of men, ages 18 to 29, attend religious services monthly or more often. That's a seven percentage point increase from 2023, and the highest percentage who have reported doing so since 2013. Pockets of young Americans, especially men, are joining faith communities and driving increased attendance at church and religious gatherings. Although women have historically been more religious than men, male and female attendance at houses of worship, for people under 30, is now statistically tied. Martin Luther refused to recant on April 18, 1521 And finally, 505 years ago, on April 18th, 1521, Martin Luther was called before Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms to recant his teaching which rejected the authority of the Catholic Church and underscored the authority of Scripture. Luther uttered these immortal words that day that launched the Protestant Reformation, depicted here in the 2003 movie entitled “Luther.” Listen. LUTHER: “Unless I am convinced by Scripture and by plain reason, and not by popes and councils, who have so often contradicted themselves, my conscience is captive to the Word of God. To go against conscience is neither right nor safe. I cannot, and I will not, recant. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me!” Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” You can watch the movie “Luther” for free through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Virginia Democrats had a big night in Tuesday's elections, sweeping all the statewide races and winning a supermajority in the House of Delegates. We broke down the historic election from all angles. We dove into the results with WAMU's Northern Virginia reporter, Margaret Barthel, and David Poole, founder of the Virginia Public Access Project. We were then joined by one of the big winners, Lieutenant Governor-elect Ghazala Hashmi, to discuss what it means for Virginians and her historic election victory as the first Muslim woman to win statewide office in the U.S.During the campaign, Hashmi dealt with comments about her background, including from her Republican opponent, John Reid, who suggested she was supported by "radical Islamists." Hashmi said voters made clear they disagreed with that rhetoric. "It was Virginians who made their choice known, and the ugliness of the bigotry that my opponent was targeting me with was soundly rejected on Tuesday night," she said.Hashmi said that, as Lieutenant Governor, she plans to focus on housing affordability, energy concerns, and healthcare. Finally, Virginia Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell took the mic to discuss what the Democrats' "trifecta" means for governing, constitutional amendments, and the much-discussed redistricting plan. He cautioned that Democrats will need to navigate significant budget challenges, which could hamper the party's agenda."A lot of these new policies require money in order to implement," he said. "And given our budget situation, we're gonna have to figure out what we can afford and what we can prioritize."At the top of the agenda when the General Assembly reconvenes in January will be raising the minimum wage, banning assault weapons, and paid family leave.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org
Virginia Lt. Governor candidate John Reid joined The Guy Benson Show today as voters head to the polls in today's off-year election in Virginia. Reid discussed the tightening polls in his race, as well as the gubernatorial and AG contests featuring Winsome Earle Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares, respectively, emphasizing that momentum is building for Republicans statewide. Reid encouraged strong turnout in SW Virginia, warning that every vote will matter in pushing back against the radicalism and violent rhetoric on display from Democrats like Jay Jones, the Democratic candidate for AG in VA who wished violence on political opponents. Reid also recounted his so-called "debate" with his opponent, who has refused to engage with him meaningfully on the issues, and made one final appeal for Virginians to get out and vote today. This week on the Mark Levin Show, Zohran Mamdani is launching a war on Americanism. It's an effort to destroy the glue that holds the society together. There are these podcasters with big companies and foreign money behind them who haven't contributed anything to the country. Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens and Nick Fuentes haven't done anything for the country, merely grifting for profit. Those with microphones must speak out and uphold integrity, honesty, and confront poisonous ideologies—left or right—that threaten the country, the culture and the party. Jews and Christians are under attack from these podcasters. Carlson is part of the enemy within. Zohran Mamdani's rise for New York City mayor was meticulously engineered by George Soros cash and socialist groups. They've been grooming him for 10 years. This model extends nationwide, propelling similar candidates like Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and Virginia Lt. Governor candidate Ghazala Hashmi. Israel does not control President Trump, nor has it controlled any past president. Israel is not "ethnic" cleansing, that would be the motivations and intentions of the Islamist terrorists -- throughout the Middle East and Africa. The multiple and unprecedented steps it has taken to try to limit casualties, at the cost of IDF soldiers' lives and increasing the longevity of the war in Gaza, is no secret, and we were not ethnic cleansing when we destroyed multiple population centers in Europe and Japan during World War II. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, Zohran Mamdani's rise for New York City mayor was meticulously engineered by George Soros cash and socialist groups. They've been grooming him for 10 years. This model extends nationwide, propelling similar candidates like Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and Virginia Lt. Governor candidate Ghazala Hashmi. This fusion of Marxism and Islamism is spreading. We can't allow them to devour our society. Also, it looks like the Biden regime had a Stasi headed by Jack Smith. Sen Chuck Grassley has released 197 FBI subpoenas from the Biden administration's "Arctic Frost" investigation, which looked like a Biden administration enemies list. Later, Obamacare is an unworkable, unaffordable disaster from day one, with premiums set to skyrocket due to Democrat expansions during the pandemic that inflated costs across Medicare, Medicaid, and private plans. Democrats are lying about its benefits, interfering with markets to push for universal healthcare—including for illegal aliens—while gutting $700 billion from Medicare and eyeing employer plans. Afterward, Democrats and the media have relentlessly portrayed climate change as an "existential" threat over the past decade. Now, billionaire Bill Gates has abruptly declared it's not existential, pivoting to calls for helping the poor and needy instead, a shift the media eagerly echoes. This vindicates the skeptics long smeared as "climate deniers" by the likes of NBC's Chuck Todd. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
In this special episode of Independent Americans, your host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is joined by his old friend and colleague, John Reid, who is now the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia—and the first openly gay candidate from a major party for statewide office in state history. John opens up about the cutthroat realities of running for office, the personal attacks he's faced, the real mental and physical risks in today's political climate—including wearing a bulletproof vest on the campaign trail—and why he believes fairness, respect, and honest debate are needed more than ever. They talk about food insecurity among military families during the federal shutdown, political hypocrisy in both parties, practical paths for bipartisan progress in Virginia, and the surprising story behind Reid's viral AI “debate” with his Democratic opponent. Plus, John shares why he remains a Republican, how his campaign has inspired young people, and what gives him hope. It's a look at what it's like to run in 2025, what it's like to be openly gay in the Republican party, to run an outsider campaign, and what it takes to stand up for what you believe in. It's a respectful and candid conversation with two guys who disagree on some things— but agree on many more. Especially their love for their country. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. This week on Breaking Battlegrounds, we kick things off with John Reid, Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, to talk about his “Real Virginia Agenda,” from workforce freedom to the gerrymandering Democrats are trying to push this week in Virginia—going against the will of Virginians—and his unconventional AI debate with opponent Ghazala Hashmi, who refused to debate him, so he debated an AI version of her using only her real quotes. Then Gary Gygi joins us to break down the upcoming Federal Reserve System meeting and what it could mean for interest rates and the economy. We're also joined by Anna Giaritelli of the Washington Examiner to discuss her powerful new memoir Under Assault and its message of justice and accountability. We wrap up with Henry Olsen, who explains why Argentina's upcoming elections matter for the United States and what's at stake globally. And stay tuned for Kiley's Corner, where she dives into the chilling story of the Highway Serial Killings. We end the podcast with John Reid's full AI Debate. The "Need to Know Morning Show" kicks off with apologies for an unscheduled guest and quickly moves to a discussion of President Trump's reported peace deal between Israel and Hamas, which is set to free hostages and bring peace to the region. Despite this remarkable achievement, the hosts confirm Trump was snubbed for the Nobel Peace Prize, which instead went to a Venezuelan opposition figure. The show dedicates segments to the ongoing government shutdown, featuring clips of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise discussing the damage inflicted by the "Schumer shutdown" and the Democrats' insistence on funding for programs like emergency care for undocumented people. They criticize Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for bragging that "every day gets better for us" during a shutdown that harms military families and other workers. The hosts also discuss Trump's threat to implement permanent cuts to government spending—specifically Democratic programs—if the shutdown continues, citing a law from the 1800s that grants the president that power. In "Tevo Time," the hosts discuss the bank fraud indictment against New York AG Letitia James, highlighting the "crushing irony" and "hypocrisy" that she is being charged with similar crimes to those she levied against Trump. Additionally, they celebrate the launch of an "All-American halftime show" by Turning Point USA to counter the planned Super Bowl halftime performance by Bad Bunny. Standout Moments: 0:02:40: The hosts announce Trump's reinstatement of Columbus Day over Indigenous Peoples Day. 0:05:54: Turning Point USA is launching an "All-American halftime show" for the Super Bowl to oppose Bad Bunny's performance. 0:06:55: The hosts criticize the NFL for repeatedly selecting rap-related artists for the Super Bowl halftime show. 0:11:47: Jesse Watters discusses how Trump's "force of his personality and persistence" secured the peace deal between Israel and Hamas. 0:12:47: The hosts share a remarkable timeline of Trump's diplomatic tactics in the peace deal, including forcing Netanyahu to apologize to Qatar in front of cameras. 0:14:52: The hosts note the "deafening silence" of Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib following the peace deal, questioning her true desire to "free Gaza". 0:18:14: The hosts share a listener's historical text linking the Phoenicians and the biblical Tribe of Dan to the origins of the Vikings and the discovery of America. 0:21:04: Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins highlights Vice President J.D.
