221 - Don't Let Anyone Push Your Buttons In this episode, I share one of the most powerful lessons I ever learned—from a book I discovered as a child. Most of his childhood was spent in orphanages and foster homes and it was also the driving force that inspired him to move ahead in life. He drew heavily from his life experiences. He started his career as a guidance counselor after receiving his D.Ed. degree in Counseling from Wayne State University. He published journals and set up a private therapy practice. His motivational speeches drew a large number of students to him, and encouraged him to put his thoughts in writing. The outcome was his first book, ‘Your Erroneous Zones'. Thereafter, he took to promoting his book with full vigor, making bookstore appearances and giving media interviews. He would perform the plastic surgery and then what would happen is that, once they healed, they would look at themselves and a large percentage of them wouldn't see any change. So, what he started to look into was how people viewed themselves, this whole idea of self-image. The best thing about the book is that it talks about manufactured memories, and it talks about the theater of the mind, and how you can influence future events positively through visualisation. Of course, there is a lot more to talk about these books than what I'm sharing with you here, and we haven't even gone through the whole list. Bob Baker has been my virtual mentor for years. I have never actually met him before, but every morning, I listen to his podcast and let him guide me in speaking affirmations over my life. He is here today to share with us his own journey to embracing affirmations. Positivity had such a huge impact on my own healing, and Bob plays a big part in keeping that going in my daily life.Despite what you might think because of his current gregariousness and big personality, Bob was actually quite shy and insecure as a teen. His junior year of high school, his good friend handed him a book by Wayne Dyre called Your Erroneous Zones. This book opened his eyes to a new world of possibilities. Suddenly, he realized: he could control his own destiny by choosing positive thoughts. He learned that thoughts influence emotions, which influence actions, which influence the direction a life can go. From there, Bob explored meditation, positivity, and spirituality. He saw success in his career and became a coach to other aspiring entertainers. He started a YouTube channel with all kinds of content and found his affirmation videos to be the most popular, so that has become his focus, and he just published a book about it.Bob explained to me why affirmations work. Whatever you allow to be a consistent part of your thinking, that is what you will see in the world. It's like when you get a new car and you start to notice everyone around you who is driving the same type. It wasn't in your consciousness before, so you didn't see it. If you purposely put positivity into your consciousness, you will begin to see it everywhere. That is why you should speak positive words over your day.What do you do when you don't believe anything positive? Is it all a lie? One suggestion is to reword the affirmation so it is true for you. So, instead of saying, “I am a millionaire,” you can change it to, “I am open and receptive to new streams of income coming into my life.” And when you start your day anticipating new ways of making money, you will see the possibilities around you as possible instead of just dismissing them as impossible. Can't figure out how to be grateful? Try saying, “I'm open to the idea of understanding gratitude.” If that's not working for you, either give that affirmation a break and find an easier one, or double down and tell yourself the positive thought repeatedly until you believe it.The most important strategy in having affirmations change your life is consistency. Do them every day. Believe they are possible, even when you can't see how to get there. Don't give up. Keep saying them over your life until they manifest because you have been open to their truth.Through this journey of leading people to positive thinking, Bob has accidentally built an online family full of encouragement for its members who are, for the most part, not receiving positivity from their in-person communities. In this episode I want to touch on a closely related topic that surfaced in that same Jay-Z interview I referred to in Episode 39: how to deal with critics.Critics have one job – to sap your self-belief. They do this by trying to persuade you into believing you're not good enough or can't do something.Jay-Z's uncle was a critic when he told him he wasn't capable of selling x amount of records. Many years later looking back, and with deep self-awareness, Jay-Z expressed how his uncle was actually reflecting his own personal fears onto Jay-Z. Jay-Z's uncle wasn't being consciously malicious, he simply couldn't imagine for himself what Jay-Z was imagining because he was scared. He had some limiting beliefs and fears that didn't allow him to think that big - to imagine on a scale that grand.Interestingly, the harshest critics are usually people close to you – people who have your ear. After he was discharged from the Navy at 22, motivational speaker Dr. Wayne Dyer's superiors warned him not to enroll in college – they told him his “advanced age” would make him uncompetitive with the other students who were enrolling straight out of high school. In his book “Wishes Fulfilled” he talked about how he often heard his family, friends and teachers saying to him, “Wayne, you're such a dreamer. Get real. You are never going to make it as a writer, or tv performer – be realistic”. Louise Hvala is my guest for this episode, and to me Louise is a power-house when it comes to create business ventures. Louise is the CEO and co-founder at Gatehouse Legal Recruitment, Founder at Alifery Freelance Legal Experts, Producer & Host of Gatehouse Insights and most recently in 2020 she started Maeja gifting. I was excited to speak to Louise, as she first invited me to be on the Gatehouse Channel to share my work with Peace Lab in 2017. She has interviewed many lawyers and successful leaders across Australia; however, having known Louise for several y ears now, but I know Louise herself has an inspiring story of self-development and self-understanding, and it would be wonderful to interview Louise for a change. In this episode, Louise shared her story of starting her professional journey initially as an accountant, and how her husband John helped her realise her true strength, which enabled her to take a career change which is more aligned with her talents. Importantly, Louise highlighted the importance of mindset especially how she is diligent and resilient in cultivating a positive mindset. On her 3 weeks trip to India many years ago, she read the book - "Your Erroneous Zones" by Dr Wayne Dyer, which empowered her to understand the key of mastering one's own thoughts and taking responsibility. Such mindset is a key principle Louise follows both in professional and personal life. And even the 2020 pandemic has not stopped her creative business ideas. This year in the midst of the pandemic, Louise started Maeja Gifting, which creates luxury gift boxes to delight, calm and uplift others. The name 'maeja' means mother in Greek, and the philosophy of Maeja Gifting is about 'unconditional love'. It was a beautiful synchronicity that Louise's mother (who is retired) now works on Maeja Gifting with Louise. Despite her busy schedules, Louise also noted the importance of physical health as well as sleep. Whilst she used to get up at 3:30am, in 2020 Louise has been able to sleep for two more hours each day by getting up 5:30am! Oh, I must say, Louise is also one of the most effortlessly fashionable individuals I know and she is also impeccably dressed (like a Vogue model) and I am waiting for the day she starts a fashion label one day.
