Rethinking Our Thoughts Part II: What Is Learned Helplessness and How Do I Overcome It? is the second part of a two part series. Last episode, we discussed cognitive distortions and how they contribute to the trauma cycle. Similarly, learned helplessness is "a condition in which a person has a sense of powerlessness, arising from a traumatic event or persistent failure to succeed. It is thought to be one of the underlying causes of depression," according to Oxford Languages. Learned helplessness is the opposite of grit, which we discuss often on the channel. Today, we're going to probe the concept of optimism and whether or not it's always a good thing. If you're new to the podcast, you can check out Episode 6 (EQ part 2) to learn more about the mood meter.Okay, let's establish some definitions for what we're going to be discussing:Optimism is generally defined as hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something.Pessimism is a tendency to see the worst aspect of things or believe that the worst will happen.My main source for this topic (including the assessment we're going to discuss) is from Martin Seligman, who is a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He's the former president of the American Psychological Association, Director of the Penn Positive Psychology Center and he's considered to be the father of positive psychology.Seligman believes that some of us are born optimists. Just naturally seeing the positive, fun and hope in situations. Conversely, some of us are born pessimists, always inclined to doubt, worry and see negative outcomes.What Seligman has spent most of his career studying and teaching is a concept he calls Learned Optimism. Yes, he believes optimism CAN be LEARNED.He defines optimism and pessimism as “habits of thinking”. And that contrary to what was believed before the late 1960's, these habits can be learned, and therefore changed.People's explanatory styles play a huge role here. Meaning, how someone thinks of, and explains the cause of challenges and adverse events. Seligman refers to these as attributional styles, and he developed an assessment to measure the relationship between explanatory styles and optimism. The phrase victims mindset gets thrown around far too readily these days. Usually by people who are just tired of confronting others who just don't seem to want to change. But what if I told you that there's something behind all of that and that? Something that keeps the person stuck in this cycle that if we were to learn a different approach to then we may all be better off for? That something is learned helplessness, a term first coined in 1967 by Psychologists Martin Seligman and Steven F Maier. Their initial research pointed to the idea that once a person has experienced helplessness (or even perceived helplessness) in enough situations they go on to believe that they are in fact helpless in other, if not all situations. Thus creating a cycle of believing you are helpless, not trying and therefore confirming that you are helpless. Thankfully Seligman and Maier's research did not stop there, Seligman in particular shifting his own mindset from "what is the cause" to "what can be done". In doing so he discovered that optimism is the minds natural defence against learned helplessness. Which to anyone who identifies as a pessimist this is a disheartening discovery, however he further went on to discover that optimism in itself is something that isn't inherent, but can be learned. Which he discusses in his book Learned Optimism. In this episode we look at the different factors that could be keeping you (or your loved ones) in learned helplessness and explore ideas on how you can escape from it.

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are waking up and taking notice that we're in charge of hope. No longer will we resign to hopelessness or a feeling of powerlessness. No longer will we get swept away with all that is wrong forgetting that we play a part in our own happiness and hope - a BIG part. We can choose to see the light or be consumed with darkness. We can buy into what we see or spend our time visualizing what we want to see. When you meditate, calm yourself, and take a breather, what do you think about? Do you replay all that you've heard, spinning in a loop of fear, or do you think of solutions? What drives you to problem-solving?  I can't stand to be stuck. That's it. Whether it's in a bad mood, financially behind, or that feeling of powerlessness. I take a moment to acknowledge it and then I say, “Whelp, here we are …now what?” When my Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's and facing a long road ahead he told me, we're heading to the doctor to see what we're dealing with here. I love that attitude. Life is full of challenges and setbacks but it's also full of victory and joy. You have to see what you're dealing with and find the opportunities, even if initially hard to see, to instill hope. Learned Helplessness and Learned Optimism comes from the work of psychologist Martin Seligman.  Learned Helplessness is a serious condition that can occur from trauma, abuse, or just the stresses of life.  But there is a way through, and that is Learned Optimism.  Even though trauma, anxiety, and the painful mental and bodily effects of learned helplessness seem so deeply ingrained in our nervous system, there are actually beliefs around learned helplessness that keep the trauma in place.  In this episode, I cover those beliefs and how to change them and reclaim your life.  Clint Sabom is Creative Director of Contemplative Light. He lived in Budapest, Hungary in 2003 as a Gilman Scholar. He speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese. In 2007, he lived for six months in a silent monastery. He holds bachelor's degrees in Religious Studies and one in Spanish literature. He has traveled extensively through Europe and South America. He has spoken and/or performed at Amnesty International, Health Conferences, High Schools, and art galleries across the US.
