A lot of trainers have been recommending this to me and I don't often say a book is a must-read, but "Profit First" definitely has earned it. This book focuses not only on the heath of your business, but making sure you have your ratios intact. Also with Profit First, similar to the so-called "Envelope System", you've got pockets of: - Operating Expenses (i.e. gym rental, teammate fees, marketing fee, etc.) - Profit Account - Tax Account - Income Account - Owner's Compensation Account So, anyone running a basketball business should listen to this and I guarantee that it will change your perspective on your business' finances going into 2023. In this episode of Mills Knows Bills, Mills shares the highlights from a webinar she conducted for a group of small business owners and variable income earners. During this webinar Mills lays out the fundamental first steps of mastering your money without stress and fear by organizing your finances in a way that works for you and not against you. Gig workers and variable income earners can often struggle with reaching their financial goals as their income can often oscillate up and down during a given year. In this episode Mills will show listeners how to plan ahead for these changes by implementing what she calls practical budgeting. Despite what many people might think a budget cannot simply be solved by making more money. In the practical budgeting system Mills shows the importance of tailoring a budget that's the best fit for you. When you begin to master this system you discover that budgeting and financial planning is not a set of rules that stifle your favorite parts of living, but rather a map to show how you can maximize your money in a way that allows you to truly start living! The Envelope System. Brilliant in its simplicity. Straightforward in its usefulness. The Envelope System has been in use for countless years to help families keep on track with their budgets. Somewhere along the line, it lost its popularity with the advent of online banking and the advent of credit. It's beyond time to reinstate this easy and helpful strategy when it comes to spending money. If you take the time to do some simple research into your spending (and in conjunction with your established budget), you can incorporate the Envelope System into your daily spending. It's a very tangible reminder that money is finite and it helps to train you in some self-restraint and allows you to flex that budgeting muscle.YNAB - The Best Budgeting Software! ‘Profit First' by Mike Michalowicz assisted me in managing my finances. The advice given in the book was beneficial; I tried it out, put it to the test, and it worked for me. I also use its concepts when working with business owners as part of my coaching business. Mismanagement is one of the problems that business owners and entrepreneurs face. I also can say that most of the people I know also have a hard time navigating this area of your business. To give you a view, in my experience, more business owners work hard to work long hours but then receive less money. Do you also experience this? In this episode, I give a few remedies and guidance in my coaching sessions. My goal for everyone is to get more business owners to be in a position where the profit comes first, the expenses come second, and life starts to look the way they anticipated when they started their business. I am a firm believer in keeping track of your company's finances. Take charge of your finances and have a better grasp of managing them. I believe that being able to master that expertise will have a significant impact on your potential to expand your business. I can guarantee you that it will give you a great deal of financial independence if done correctly. Understand your business's numbers and strive to be free of financial mismanagement. Make sure your numbers are in order! You can generate a profit in your business and learn to be the CFO of your company if you follow some effortless financial ideas I've provided to you. Must-listen Moments: [01:48] Business finances in sales and personal financial plan. The concept behind paying yourself first for personal finance. Take your savings out of there where you don't even miss it, and pay expenses out of the remaining amount. [05:38] Envelope System . This is the concept that you get money in, and you separate into each little group that you might want to spend from. [10 :00] I see so many business owners feeling two things: One, that they can't grow as fast as they want because there's a timeline and rules. The second thing is the 'shame piece.' There is not one financial professional or business coach that I have ever run across that gives people shit for not doing it right already, for me as an example.
