In the distant past of 2014, humanity was forever changed upon the discovery of a big ol' space orb floating above Mars. The big ol' space orb terraformed planets across our solar system and granted us with the Power of LightTM, ushering in a new Golden Age. But, that Golden Age wouldn't last forever. Eventually, the forces of DarknessTM found us and did a near-genocide, and now humanity is on the brink of extinction. Fortunately, the big ol' space orb resurrected a bunch of people and gave them Space Magic to fight back against the Darkness. You are one of those Space Wizards. It is you who will lead the charge against the evils of space and lead humanity back to their long-lost Golden Age. This is your story. This is your DESTINY. In this week's episode, I take a look back at the movies and TV shows I watched in Autumn 2024, and rate them from my least favorite to my favorite. TRANSCRIPT Hello, everyone. Welcome to episode 230 of The Pulp Writer Show. My name is Jonathan Moeller. Today is December the Sixth, 2024, and today we are looking at my movie/TV show roundup for Fall 2024. Before we get to that, we'll have an update on my current writing projects and then we will do Question of the Week. First up, I'm pleased to report that the rough draft of Orc Hoard is done at 78,000 words, so it'll probably end up being about exactly the same length as Half-Orc Paladin, the previous book in the series. I've also written a short story called Commander's Wrath that newsletter subscribers will get a free ebook copy of when Orc Hoard comes out and hopefully we're on track to have that out before Christmas. I'm also 7,000 words into Shield of Deception, which will be the fourth book in The Shield War series and if all goes well, I'm hoping to have that out in January or February. In audiobook news, recording is currently underway for Cloak of Masks and that will probably be out towards the end of January or perhaps February, depending on how long processing takes. 00:01:02 Question of the Week Question of the Week is designed to inspire enjoyable discussions of interesting topics. This week's question, what do you listen to while working: genre of music, audiobooks, podcast, nothing else so you can concentrate, et cetera. No wrong answers obviously, and we had quite a few answers. David says: I listen to audiobooks and music. Music ranges from classical to country to pop, bands and soul artists to instrumental. No rap or heavy metal or dance music or I listen to music from YouTube channels. If I have to really focus on what I'm doing, I'll turn it low so it doesn't distract. Justin says: video game music is my first choice. It can help you grind in real life just like it does in the game. If that isn't working for me, then rock or classical music with movie soundtracks at third. Brooks says: I tend to gravitate towards hard rock/punk rock. I have to stay adrenalized. Outside work, I'll listen to almost anything. Michael says: I find I can't listen to words or lyrics without getting distracted by them, so instrumental music is the way to go. Usually video game music too (the Stelara soundtrack is particularly epic), movie scores (Kingdom of Heaven is one of my favorites), or Dungeon Synth, an amazing music genre I only discovered recently. Barbara says: sometimes I play music while writing, but most of the time I prefer the silence so I can better hear the voices in my head. Of course, I prefer very specific types of music that always end up coming back no matter how much I try to stray. Jenny says: lots of EDM and techno if words would distract me or my solid nineties pop punk angsty mix. I also have a giant one I called “I heard it in a video game” for background music. John says: When I did/could work, I enjoyed outlaw country music, particularly that from Texas. Put me in a kick butt and take names kind of mood. When you're a plumber who gets paid by the work done, not the hour, that's where one wants to be. (A different) John says: I only listen to music when I'm working in the kitchen. I'm eclectic. Sometimes classical music, sometimes ‘80s prog rock with Hawaiian music and occasionally jazz tossed in. Juana says: I like rock and roll from many eras. I put my eclectic music on shuffle. I also listen to movie soundtracks: Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Animal House, et al. Brandy says: If I'm cooking, I listen to Pandora. There's a pop ‘90s - ‘20s station. I do have a few that are specifically listed, angry or sad, one more angry German metal or Mongolian throat metal, the other more goth and industrial. I read books instead of listening. If I'm proofing, I usually have something on in the background. Today it's Sanctuary Season One. Morgan says: ADHD means I jump around a lot on what I'm listening to depending on the day, but audiobooks- usually fantasy or horror. Podcasts- Pathfinder actual play podcasts, horror podcasts, and wrestling/gaming news podcasts. Music, whatever artist/album I'm obsessing over at the time, but usually prog rock, metal, or rap. Matthew says: I always have my iPad for background noise. If I'm particularly invested in getting chapters done, I'll put on something largely audible. Gary says: audiobooks, podcasts, worship music, Christian hard rock. Bob says: Retired now, but when I was working I didn't listen to anything-needed to concentrate on what I was doing. When paying bills, I sometimes have some Morse Code on in the background (one of my previous means of paying the bills). On long car trips, it's nice to have some distraction -whatever radio station I can find, preferably one with a story. In truck stops, we used to find some stories on disc that had the actors doing the voice of the characters and some of them were pretty good. For myself, I almost always listen to music while I'm working and that genre is usually soundtracks and video games, movies, and TV shows (in that order) that I liked, which makes it difficult to discuss music with people, I have to admit. I do listen to podcasts when I'm working outside, so long as I'm not using a power tool that requires earplugs for safe operation (which sadly seems to be most of the time). 00:04:42 Main Topic: Autumn 2024 Movie/TV Review Roundup Now on to our main topic, the review roundup of the movies and streaming shows I watched in Autumn 2024. I was going to do a combined Autumn/Winter 2024 one, but it was getting a bit too long, so Winter 2024/2025 will be its own post in a few months. I seemed to watch a lot of time travel movies this time around and quite a few with Space Magic. As ever, the grades are totally subjective and based on nothing more than my own thoughts and opinions. Now let's take a look at the movies and streaming shows from least favorite to most favorite. First up is Escanaba in Da Moonlight, which came out in 2001 and it is a surrealist comedy about hunting traditions set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. 42-year-old Reuben Sodi is the only man in his family who has never shot a buck, so when he complains about this to his Native American wife, she casts a spell to help Ruben bag his first buck, which results in a very bizarre nighttime journey/vision quest. This includes UFOs, visitations by nighttime spirits, and a Department of Natural Resources officer having a mental breakdown. This was a funny movie, but it was definitely very weird and even more specific. If you're at all familiar with the hunting culture of Upper American Midwest, you'll get the humor. If you're not familiar with it, this will be like watching a movie from another planet. Overall grade: C. Next up is Looper, which came out in 2012. I didn't actually like this movie very much, but I respect how well done it was. Joseph Gordon Levitt plays Joe and is a type of assassin called a looper living in the US in 2044. About 30 years after 2044, time travel is invented but immediately outlawed. Since it's difficult to get away with murder in 2074 due to advanced technology, crime syndicates have taken to sending people they want eliminated back in time to 2044 where the loopers immediately execute the target in exchange for a big fat payout. Loopers can live like kings, but there's a price. Eventually the loop is closed and the looper's future self is sent back to be killed by his past self. Failure to comply results in an extremely grisly fate at the hands of the syndicate. Joe, being a hardened killer and drug addict, is fine with all this and even helps turn in a fellow looper who failed to close his own loop. Then Joe's future self arrives. Joe is about to kill Future Joe (played by Bruce Willis), but Future Joe escapes and Present Joe has to hunt down and kill Future Joe if he wants to survive. In the process, Present Joe stumbles across the farm of a woman named Sarah (played by Emily Blunt) and her young son Sid. Present Joe realizes that future Joe has traveled back to kill the child, Sid, who will be responsible for the death of Future Joe's wife in the future. Despite everything he's done, Present Joe is not okay with this and gears up to help Sarah defend Sid from Future Joe. This movie was on the very dark side of noir filmmaking: no good characters, essentially only various degrees of bad people trying to navigate their way through the maze of time crimes. I did strongly dislike how fundamentally nihilistic the movie was and the addition of telekinesis did seem like kind of a plot crutch. There is also some unnecessary nudity. Rian Johnson is actually an excellent filmmaker. Knives Out and Glass Onion were both very good, but I cannot imagine how someone will watch Looper and think, hey, this guy is a good choice for a Star Wars movie. Overall Grade: B- Next up is Agatha All Along, which came out in 2024. It was extremely well written and well-acted. You almost have to watch it twice just to admire how well put together the plot was. I wasn't expecting to like Agatha All Along, but it is an excellent example of writing a show with a villain protagonist and actually pulling it off. The show is also a good example of something I've talked about before on the podcast and the blog: characters can be likable, emotionally sympathetic, or both. It's sometimes tricky to write a character who's both, unlikable but emotionally sympathetic. By contrast, Agatha Harkness is an excellent example of a character who's both likable and highly, highly unsympathetic. Agatha All Along is indeed a show with a villain protagonist, but Agatha is charismatic enough to remain likable even though she's unquestionably an absolute monster who deserves every bit of suffering she endures. Actress Kathryn Hahn deserves major credit for making someone as evil as Agatha so charismatic. Agatha retains just enough of a sliver of sympathy to keep the audience from turning on her, but even when she shows flashes of humanity, beneath that there are even more layers of monster. She also does a very sort of a modern Doctor Who/ Sherlock thing where she talks very fast and puts up a flippant and silly facade, but she's actually calculating things several steps in advance and manipulating everyone around her to her final goal. Anyway, the plot of Agatha All Along is that Agatha finally breaks free from the spell of the Scarlet Witch placed on here at the end of Wandavision. However, Agatha doesn't have any magic left, which is a major problem for her because she has very many enemies who very much want to see her dead as soon as possible, but then a mysterious teenager turns up and asks for Agatha's help. He wants to walk the legendary Witches' Road and it has said that someone who walks the road and survives to the end will receive their heart's desire. Since Agatha doesn't have any other options and she has some major enemies, she agrees. Agatha, the teenager, and the Witches' Road itself all have very dark secrets and their reveal makes for some major drama. As I mentioned, the show was very well written and acted. I suspect that may be the secret for movie or TV success in the 2020s economic climate: good actors, an excellent script, and keep your costs down. Overall grade: B Our next movie is Field of Dreams, which came out in 1989. An Iowa farmer discovers he's a very specific kind of necromancer, like how sports medicine is a specific field of study. Maybe sports necromancy is a specific subclass for evil wizards or something. All joking aside, the main character is Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) and he's walking his cornfield one day and he hears a mysterious voice tell him “If you build it, he will come.” Ray builds a baseball field in one of his cornfields and began speaking to the ghost of Shoeless Joe, a popular baseball player who died in 1951. Soon a lot of other ghosts arrive and start playing baseball as well. The mysterious voice starts urging Ray to “ease his pain” and Ray concludes this must means Terrance Mann (played by James Earl Jones), an activist writer from the sixties who dropped out of the public eye and is living in seclusion. So Ray starts on a cross country trip to persuade Mann to come to his baseball field. This movie is really perhaps the ur-example of the Feel-Good Eighties Movies and maybe a Baby Boomer movie. The characters speak with near religious reverence for the ‘60s, baseball is the Great American Pastime, and Ray really wants to heal his relationship with the father he rebelled against back in the ‘60s. The best part of the movie was unquestionably James Earl Jones' character and his performance as he resigns himself to Ray's craziness and then starts to believe in it was pretty great. Overall grade: B Next up is Holiday, which came out in 1938. Holiday is a romantic comedy from the 1930s. Cary Grant plays Johnny Case, who has fallen in love with Julia Seton, the daughter of a wealthy New York banking family. However, his more individualistic outlook soon puts him at odds with Julia's more traditionalist family, though this draws the attention of Julia's elder sister Linda (played by Katharine Hepburn). It felt a bit like watching a play and a little research revealed that it was indeed based on a play from 1928, which may be why the film didn't do so well when it originally came out, though it is regarded as a classic today. Viewers in the Great Depression era would probably find it difficult to sympathize with a man who wanted to turn down a well-paying job at a bank, not out of moral objections to the bank's business practices, but because he would feel constrained. The Seton family is played as eccentric and somewhat troubled, but not as buffoons or villains as rich people were often portrayed in other 1930s movies. Good performances and worth watching as a classic, though sound technology has improved quite a bit in the last 90 years, so you probably will want to watch it with the captions on. Overall grade: B Next movie is Twisters, which came out in 2024. This is basically the same movie as Twister from back in 1995, but with some of the plot of Pride and Prejudice bolted on. Kate Carter (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) is an Oklahoma storm chaser with her boyfriend and best friends. One day, one of their storm chases goes horribly wrong, killing Kate's boyfriend and most of their friends. Five years later, Kate is working for the National Weather Service in New York when her old friend Javi, the other survivor of that storm, asks for her help testing a new radar tracking system. Kate reluctantly agrees and they return to Oklahoma and crosses horns with storm YouTuber Tyler Owens (played by Glenn Powell) who makes videos of his truck shooting fireworks into tornadoes. Naturally, Kate and Tyler immediately misunderstand each other in the same way as in Pride and Prejudice but are forced to work together when it turns out that Javi's company might have ulterior motives. I thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable summer popcorn flick. Given how both Covid and the 2023 writers' strike hit this movie's production like two successive freight trains, it's astonishing it turned out so well. Overall grade: A- Next up is The Rings of Power Season 2, which came out in 2024. I have the same attitude towards this as I do with Starfield. I really like it. In fact, my Xbox told me I played Starfield for 270 hours in 2024, but I get why some people do not. This show is essentially very elaborate fan fiction. The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, despite the changes from the book, was still recognizably The Lord of the Rings. The Rings of Power is almost entirely its own thing. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this for a couple of reasons and hope it continues. First, it's nice to have an epic fantasy TV series that's not a nihilistic pornographic torture fest like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon and is more competently executed than Disney's ill-fated Willow Series. Second, all things must be taken in their context. What do I mean by this? Perhaps a food comparison will illustrate the point. The book the Lord of the Rings is like Kobe beef prepared by the finest chefs in the world, the sort of experience you get maybe once or twice in your life if fortune smiles upon you. The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy is like a high-quality supermarket steak grilled in the backyard by someone who's pretty good at it. The Rings of Power is like McDonald's, but there are times when you really want some McDonald's. In fact, I kind of want a Big Mac after saying all of that, but The Rings of Power is really good McDonald's, the kind of McDonald's you have after driving the car for 250 miles without stopping across one of America's flatter and less populous states. The only place to eat for like a hundred miles in any direction is this McDonald's in the same building as a gas station, so you stop and don't expect very much, but it turns out the fries are crispy and salty and the nuggets are just right. I don't think it's surprising that The Rings of Power has had such a mixed reception. The Venn diagram of “enjoys Lord of the Rings” has some wildly divergent circles to it and that is a testament to the fact that the Lord of the Rings is such a great work of literature that so many people from so many very different ideological identity groups enjoy and identify with the book. Even ideological identity groups that are mortal foes agree on their approval of the Lord the Rings. So naturally each different group has its own strong opinion of what an adaptation should look like. With that very long-winded introduction out of the way, I liked season two and I thought it was an improvement over Season One, a lot more narrative tension. Season One perhaps spent too much time setting the table and building context, but Season Two works well in making Season One better in hindsight. The Rings of Power version of Galadriel is improved in Season Two because she was one of the few characters in Season One able to throw off Sauron's mental domination and seduction. The highlight of the season was the toxic dynamic between Sauron and Celebrimbor. Actors Charlie Vickers and Charles Edwards did an amazing job portraying the slow-moving disaster that Sauron and Celebrimbor's collaboration would create, two intellectual equals working together to create something great, but nonetheless, Sauron twists everything to his own ends. Their final scene together was just astonishingly good. The portrayal of Sauron is both very modern and true to Tolkien, a destructive narcissist who actually believes whatever lies he's speaking at any given moment. He really, truly believes he's going to heal Middle Earth, no matter how many people he has to kill to do it. The scenes with Prince Durin, his father, and one of the dwarven rings of power were great as well. It had the same sort of feel to it as an adult child watching with horror as a beloved parent succumbs to a drug addiction. The best new character the show created (in my opinion) is Adar, one of the progenitors of the orcs. Tolkien himself could never really decide on the origin of the orcs and came up with different thoughts throughout his lifetime. When editing The Silmarillion, Christopher Tolkien settled on the corrupted former elves version, which seems to be what his father had been leaning towards anyway. Rings of Power takes that to its logical conclusion. Adar wants his orcish progeny to live free of the dark lords Morgoth and Sauron, which makes sense because in the books, the orcs hated Morgoth and Sauron and only served them out of fear. Indeed, in The Lord of the Rings, Sauron seems to have secret police and informers among the orcs to keep track of their loyalties. Since the show displays how twisted and cruel Sauron really is, it makes sense that Adar is willing to go to any lengths to stop Sauron, no matter how extreme. The orcs are still monsters, including Adar himself, but they're monsters who want to be free of an even greater monster than themselves. If you've read The Silmarillion or The Lord of the Rings, you'll know all the characters' efforts are doomed to failure, especially Adar and Celebrimbor's, which lends an air of inevitable tragedy to everything that happens. I know some people were mad that Tom Bombadil was basically Wizard Yoda, but I thought it worked. Tom Bombadil is so inscrutable of a character that he can really do whatever he wants so long as he's inscrutable. It was also great how composer Bear McCreary wove a variation of Sauron's theme throughout the show. The soundtrack was A+ work in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed the show and would like it to continue. If you know the difference between Fëanor, Finwë, Finrod, Felagund, Finarfin, Findulias, Fingon, and Fingolfin (without having to look it up), and in fact have everything about them from The Silmarillion memorized, you'll hate this show. But I think it's worth watching. Overall Grade: A- Next up is Casa Bonita Mi Amor, which came out in 2024. Way back in the 1990s I saw an episode of Frasier where Frasier and his brother Niles decide to buy a restaurant. A series of hilarious cascading disasters result. At the time I decided I never wanted to own a restaurant and every piece of both factual information and fictional media I have consumed since has not changed this decision. Casa Bonita Mi Amor definitely will not challenge that decision. Apparently, Casa Bonita was a beloved theme restaurant in Colorado that went out of business during Covid. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park, decided to buy the restaurant themselves and reopen it. They budgeted $3.6 million for the restoration of the building. Costs soon swelled to $40 million and the problems were still only just beginning. This is an excellent and entertaining example of the “rich man buys restaurant, soon finds himself over his head” genre of documentary filmmaking. Overall grade: A Finally, my two favorite things I saw in Autumn 2024 and the first of them is the movie Frequency, which came out in 2000. It's another variant on a time travel story, but I like this one considerably better than Looper. Frank Sullivan is a firefighter and devoted family man living in New York circa 1969. His son John is a police detective living in the house 30 years later in 1999 with emotional problems because he never got over his father's tragic death in a dangerous fire 30 years earlier in 1969. When the son of a friend stumbles across his father's old ham radio, John lets the kid goof around with it. Later that night, John starts talking to someone on that radio and to his astonishment realizes he's talking to his father from 30 years ago on the same ham radio. Desperate, John tries to warn Frank about the fire that kills him and it works. Frank survives the fire and instead of dying 1969, instead dies in 1989 from lung cancer due to a pack a day habit. The scene where history changes and John suddenly realizes what has happened was pretty great, but this isn't the ending. We're only 40% of the way through the movie. John successfully managed to put right what once went wrong. However, in doing so, he accidentally also put wrong what once went right. His mother is a nurse and in the original timeline was on bereavement leave the day after Frank's death. In the new timeline, Frank is okay, so she goes to work and saves a patient who otherwise would've died in medical error and the patient happens to be the deadly serial killer known as the Nightingale. To his horror, John realizes that The Nightingale is now free to continue his murder spree and his new target is John's mother and Frank's wife. As I've mentioned numerous times before, I'm not really a fan of time travel stories, but this one was quite well done. Interestingly, the plot structure was similar to Avengers Endgame. The Avengers go back in time to steal the Infinity Stones to undo Thanos' Snap, but Past Thanos figures out what's going on and follows the Avengers back to the present and attempts to make things even worse than they already are. John manages to save Frank from the fire, but this means the Nightingale serial killer survives and might create a worse present than the one John already has, so that really adds an altogether excellent element of dramatic tension to the entire movie. As one amusing side note, this movie shared Field of Dream's reverence for baseball as the Great American Pastime and John manages to convince Frank he's telling the truth about their time travel radio by accurately predicting the outcome of baseball games. Overall grade: A Now the second favorite thing I watched in Autumn 2024, The Grand Tour: One for the Road, which came out in 2024. I admit that when I started self-publishing in 2011, I knew absolutely nothing about the contemporary United Kingdom, like I couldn't even told you whether the UK used the Pound or the Euro. When I started getting book royalties from Amazon UK, let's just say I learned about currency conversion rates really fast, but as UK book royalties fluctuated as they do, I started reading the UK news since when there's an election or major news event in the UK, book royalties tend to drop for a few days after the same way they do when something similar happens in the US. Because of that, I saw the news article when Jeremy Clarkson was fired from Top Gear in 2015 for punching out a producer. At the time, there were some seasons of Top Gear on Netflix, so I was curious and started watching and was thoroughly entertained. When Grand Tour started on Amazon, I started watching that as well and I was also thoroughly entertained, but all good things must come to an end. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May go on one last road trip adventure across Zimbabwe. The usual hijinks ensue for one last time, and it was a fitting end to Top Gear/The Grand Tour. I'll miss the show, but I am grateful for over a decade of entertainment from Top Gear/The Grand Tour and from the various spinoffs like Clarkson's Farm and James May's travel show. Overall grade: A So that is it for this week. Thank you for listening to The Pulp Writer Show. I hope you found the show useful. Every now and then, we enjoy going back to "old" vaporwave albums to live in ambiance of that time.Space Magic is a vaporwave artist from the golden era of vaporwave (in our opinion, 2011-2015). His album 98 'Waves is a collection of nostalgic spaces from various locales, both physical and digital, fashioning a nostalgia that can only be as focused and immersive as it is in the vaporwave space. This album brought some very specific vivid memories, and we enjoyed how it lulled us into them. We hope it does for you too.Let's set sail for SPACE MAGIC's 98 'Waves.New to The Virtual Ocean? Here's a bit more about our show:Vaporwave is an art aesthetic that embodies the anxiety, disillusionment, and nihilism of the modern world. In music form, vaporwave dives deep into these unconscious anxieties, manifesting sounds from past decades - warping them, manipulating them, and summoning the ghost of the good times that were promised by modern capitalism, but never came.Vaporwave is an expression of the pains of the collective modern unconscious, taking the form of heroin-level escapism, ecstasy-inducing pop music, or dystopian ambient worlds.Because of its internet-based nature, its aesthetics have evolved so rapidly, further reflecting the chaotic subconscious of the modern mind.Vaporwave captures the modern unconscious of humans raised by the internet succinctly and understanding this art form matters. In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up the genre and give our thoughts, analysis, emotions, and commentary on them. Consider donating to us! $thevirtualocean on CashApp will get you your name and any message you want read at the end of the show, starting episode 63. Let's set sail on the Virtual Ocean.

Today I will be discussing the physical exercises of Step three along with the two appendices. In Step Two and in the mental and astral sections of Step Three, we have been using our imagination to create sensory impressions. But now, for the first time, with the Step Three physical exercises of accumulating the Vital Energy, we use our imagination to cause an energy to obey our will. Thus we begin to work with imagination's second function, that of instructing or guiding energies. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/MysticalThoughts/support

In Star Trek gaming, Star Trek Online joins the Vendor's haul, the Prometheus gets a fresh coat of paint, Scopely gets paid, and we discuss the similarities of Klingon culture and cold soup! Then we head On Screen to watch Star Trek: Discovery's newest episode - “People of Earth” Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Week's Community Questions are: CQ: Are you shipping Burnham and Book? What's their ship name? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Star Trek Discovery Production Has Begun! Take a trip through time with us, to an era vastly different than today. The year - 1990. The fall of the Berlin wall, the re-unification of East and West Germany, Poland's 1st direct presidential election. The western world felt like it was ending decades of Cold War hostility. Today - well today feels different. But at least we don't have to wait a grueling three months to find out if Star Trek was going to return! In those dark-trek-times, no one knew whether Patrick Stewart would reprise the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Today we have word that Discovery is shooting it's fourth season! And we're only three episodes into its third! We reported in episode 483 that production for season 4 would start on September 2nd, but reports were confirmed via Twitter on Monday. Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Michelle Paradise tweeted ”Day One of season 4! So proud of our room - breaking and writing from corners, kitchens, garages, & home offices. And our production team - prepping a new season is a lot, esp. in a pandemic. They've done INCREDIBLE work to get us here and keep everyone safe. #StarTrekDiscovery” https://twitter.com/michelleparadis/status/1323285494893928449 https://twitter.com/michelleparadis/status/1323286339454840832 Out of an abundance of caution, we're going to hit the *SPOILER ALERT* klaxon for this next bit. Okay. Shortly after Paradise's tweet, Saru's Doug Jones tweeted a video shaving his head. Later, Jones shared a before and after photo. Soooo - that means, unlike in 1990, we're SURE to be getting our current Captain back on-set! https://twitter.com/actordougjones/status/1323337116596736005 https://twitter.com/actordougjones/status/1323337555450961921 Blu Del Barrio Talks About Star Trek's Adira In the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery - “People of Earth” - we were introduced to the newest member of the Discovery crew - Adira. This week, Adira actor Blu del Barrio sat down with several news outlets to talk about her experience as Star Trek's first non-binary star. Throughout del Barrio's interviews with SyFy, StarTrek.com, and Entertainment Tonight, it was clear that del Barrio understood the importance of their representation - both in regards to Star Trek and more broadly to television audiences. When asked by Riley Silverman of SyFy.com why Adira was referred to as she/her instead of they/them in “People of Earth”, del Barrio responded ”Yeah, so that will definitely be addressed. And Adira is non-binary. Even when people are using she/they pronouns, for Adira, because they have not shared their identity with the Discovery crew. Yes. And this was basically the case because I still wasn't really out to my family and I didn't want to be out on screen as a character who was out until I was.” Photo Via Syfy.com Breaking Star Trek's Trill Stereotypes Later in the interview, Silverman mentioned the importance of the Trill in the Trans and non-binary communities, despite cis actors playing those roles; and how Discovery is seemingly subverting the implication that the Trill are only Trans or Non-binary because of the symbiote. Del Barrio responded, saying in part ”There is definitely a lot of the queer community that attached itself to the Trill species. But not because the Trill were necessarily like “oh, you know because they are a host of multiple consciousnesses, they must be trans.” [...] Adira is non-binary, has always been non-binary before they were a host. It wasn't that having the symbiont brought out something else in them. But I do like how they've brought in the Trill species into Adira's storyline, which kind of validates, maybe, a lot of what queer Star Trek fans have seen in the past and their identifying with the Trill in some ways.” We've only quoted from one of the three articles mentioned earlier in the story, but each is well worth a really - and really gives context to what we've talked about here. Photo Via ET.com David Ajala With Entertainment Tonight Another of Star Trek: Discovery's new additions - Booker's David Ajala - also sat down with Entertainment Tonight to talk all things Star Trek. During the conversation with ET's Philiana Ng, Ajala praised his character - Book - working with series star Sonequa Martin-Green, and the two cats that play his queen - Grudge. When asked by Entertainment Tonight about a possible romantic relationship between Book and Burnham, Ajala was a bit uncomfortable. ”I don't know what you are talking about. It's absolutely platonic. Absolutely, absolutely platonic. No idea what you are talking about. Sorry, nope. (Laughs.)”. Ajala expounded later, clarifying ”Those two characters definitely have an undeniable connection, which is special, and [...] the foundation of that connection is literally the two of them on many occasions have trust the other person with their life [...] But in terms of a romantic relationship, I don't know. We're going to phase out because it feels very platonic to me, but stranger things have happened.” Ajala also spoke about his experience wearing the starfleet uniform, saying ”Yeah. That was horrible, only because it was so tight. [...]when I did my costume fitting it was okay. I thought, "This looks pretty cool. I like it." And on the day of filming, I am convinced the costume department took in a half-inch or a lot of the seams on my costume. So when I'm wearing that costume in the scene and I'm complaining, it was freaking tight. I'm convinced that's what they did, absolutely convinced.” Photo Via ET.com Doug Jones Sits Down with Collider An old-time Discovery cast member ALSO hit the media circuit. This time, the incomparable Doug Jones sat down with Collider Connected to talk about his career, his future, and Star Trek! Jones discussed what's ahead for the Discovery crew, and how the 900 plus year jump into the future will affect the series going forward. Jones later discussed the Federation, and how finding them could - but likely won't - affect who's in Discovery's Captain's chair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0coyV6TUAls Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Online Takes A Dive for Science By Thomas Reynolds During Star Trek's more-than-50-year history, its relationship with real-world science has been...contentious, at times. I mean, take your pick: transwarp salamanders, weekly mystery-flavor particles, and the JJ-prise plummeting a quarter of a million miles to Earth in three minutes, just to name a few. Clearly Trekkies don't find it bothersome--if anything, it's part of the franchise's charm (seriously though, three minutes???). That said, we'll always appreciate verisimilitude whether we see it on screen or feel it in-game. Even if we need Dr. Hurt to point it out for us plebs. On November 7th, Star Trek Online is hosting a panel for the Vendor's Haul Virtual Convention with some serious scientific star power. Franchise science advisor Erin Macdonald, “Bad Astronomer” Phil Plait, and Senior Content Designer Jesse Heinig will put the “Gravity Kills” TFO under the scope for both science and entertainment. How do you pull a story out of something so dense that light can't escape it? Is spaghettification possible with the game engine? Join the panel at 10 AM PT to find out. Prometheus Bundled By Thomas Reynolds If escort carriers or science vessels aren't your thing, then the Ships of the Line series has likely left you feeling left out. But we have good news, as long as you're a fan of tactical escorts! The Prometheus is getting the Bundle treatment, including a remaster of the Prometheus ship model and material. The Bundle combines the T5 and T6 variants and tosses in a fleet module for 5,000 ZEN, and will be on sale for 35% off (so 3250 ZEN) until November 12th. Image via Star Trek Online Revenge: Back for Seconds By Thomas Reynolds Revenge is like gazpacho. No, it's not because revenge is traditionally prepared with a mortar and pestle. Nor is it because modern variations of revenge might include seafood or watermelon. No, revenge is like gazpacho because it's zesty. It's refreshing. Most importantly, it is best served cold….and captains, I do hope you brought your appetites. The “Best Served Cold” TFO returns to all platforms on November 12th for the latest three-week special event. As usual, foiling Aakar's prison break 14 times during the event will earn the Grand Prize, marks, and dilithium. Also, a Featured Episode Weekly Reward Box will be given for the first time the TFO is completed each week. However, characters on different platforms will get different Grand Prizes. Console players who defend the Empire will receive Molor's Flaming Sword, which is obviously what it says: a Gre'thor-branded flaming sword. Less obviously, it also features a chain-pull attack, helping you bring enemies close and share the love. Or pain. Or both. Image Via Star Trek Online Meanwhile, victorious PC players will receive the cuddly, blood-curdling Nanopulse Targ Combat Pet first seen in the “House Shattered” story mission. However, it's not the only spicy porcine powerhouse making an appearance. The magma Targ of Gre'thor charges into the Zen Store on November 12th, with a temporary 20% discount off its normal 500 Zen price. Fireproof oven mitts not included. Interestingly, equipping both combat pets at the same time yields the Targ Handler Bonus proc. Activating one pet will automatically summon a shorter-lived version of the other pet at the same time. Now cry havoc, and let slip the targs of war. Image Via Star Trek Online Scopely Get Paid 2 Win By Shane Hoover Star Trek: Fleet Command publisher, Scopely, has been doing business that even the Ferengi Commerce Authority would envy. According to a recent VentureBeat report, the mobile game publisher behind such titles as Marvel Strike Force, Scrabble Go and Yahtzee with Buddies recently secured a fifth round of venture capital funding worth $340 million. Commenting on the news, CEO Javier Ferreira said "We had a really successful year, and we will close the year with more than $900 million in revenue. " I think I just heard Quark choke on his root beer. The funding deal values Scopely at a remarkable $3.3 billion, and positions the publisher to continue its strategy of liberal application of Rules of Acquisition number 95 and number 3. Meanwhile, according to Ferreira, Star Trek: Fleet Command has just wrapped its eighth consecutive quarter of revenue growth. With the September expansion of the game to include all of the Star Trek film and TV multiverse, it's safe to assume Fleet Command will endure significantly longer than Quark's stint as Grand Nagus. Discussing Star Trek Online Experimental Ship Upgrades By Shane Hoover The Priority One Podcast team have had time to use our first few Star Trek Online Experimental Ship Upgrade Tokens, and we'd like to discuss our first impressions for our listeners. If you've been trapped in a transporter buffer for an extended time, let us remind you how the Experimental Ship Upgrade Tokens work. Purchased from the Zen Store for 1000 Zen each, or 3 for 2000 Zen, the tokens can be applied to any T5-U or Tier 6 starship. Upon application, the upgrade unlocks an additional Device slot, Universal Console slot, and Starship Trait slot on that specific Ship Class across your entire account. So, what's the verdict on how these upgrades affect your gameplay? In our official (it's not official) and extremely scientific (it wasn't scientific) study, here's what Priority One team members thought. The most basic impact we saw was the value of another Tactical Console, like a Fleet Vulnerability Locator. On our Tactical builds, this was a very noticeable jump in combat performance. With a bit more variation, the same is true for Science builds. With an additional Exotic Particle Focuser console, for example, your Exotic damage build can crank out even more Space Magic hurt. You might also find yourself able to stack 3 and 4 piece set bonuses that weren't in your build before T6-X. Starship Trait Slot The additional Starship Trait slot is also pretty powerful. The diversity of available Starship Traits means that how you use this slot, and how it affects your performance, will vary pretty widely. You might find that you can now add something like Honored Dead to your build to increase survivability without giving up any of your previous DPS. Or you might prefer to drive your damage output even higher with something like Emergency Weapon Cycle or Target Rich Environment. Remember, the only other way to add a Starship Trait slot to your build will cost you 250,000 Fleet Credits and 100,000 Dilithium. T5-U! The other big area of impact for these X Upgrades is the opportunity to bring your favorite T5-U ship's performance up to levels that let you keep flying it even though it's not Top-of-the-Line. Quite a few captains we've talked to have done just this. If your favorite ship is a T5 Tempest Patrol Escort or T5 Dyson Destroyer, these upgrades might just breathe new life into your enjoyment of it. Just remember, if you upgrade your T5-U ship to T5-UX, the upgrades won't carry over when a Tier 6 refit of the ship comes down the line. To get to the bottom line, these Experimental Upgrade Tokens seem to be worth the cost, whether you spend Zen or EC to get them. One of the best parts of Star Trek Online is taking your FAVORITE Trek ship out into the Universe. And improving the performance of your favorite ship just makes it more fun again.

In those dark-trek-times, no one knew whether Patrick Stewart would reprise the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Today we have word that Discovery is shooting it’s fourth season! And we’re only three episodes into its third! #StarTrekDiscovery” https://twitter.com/michelleparadis/status/1323285494893928449 https://twitter.com/michelleparadis/status/1323286339454840832 Out of an abundance of caution, we’re going to hit the *SPOILER ALERT* klaxon for this next bit. Okay. Shortly after Paradise’s tweet, Saru’s Doug Jones tweeted a video shaving his head. Later, Jones shared a before and after photo. Soooo - that means, unlike in 1990, we’re SURE to be getting our current Captain back on-set! https://twitter.com/actordougjones/status/1323337116596736005 https://twitter.com/actordougjones/status/1323337555450961921 Blu Del Barrio Talks About Star Trek's Adira In the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery - “People of Earth” - we were introduced to the newest member of the Discovery crew - Adira. This week, Adira actor Blu del Barrio sat down with several news outlets to talk about her experience as Star Trek’s first non-binary star. Throughout del Barrio’s interviews with SyFy, StarTrek.com, and Entertainment Tonight, it was clear that del Barrio understood the importance of their representation - both in regards to Star Trek and more broadly to television audiences. But I do like how they've brought in the Trill species into Adira’s storyline, which kind of validates, maybe, a lot of what queer Star Trek fans have seen in the past and their identifying with the Trill in some ways.” We’ve only quoted from one of the three articles mentioned earlier in the story, but each is well worth a really - and really gives context to what we’ve talked about here. Photo Via ET.com David Ajala With Entertainment Tonight Another of Star Trek: Discovery’s new additions - Booker’s David Ajala - also sat down with Entertainment Tonight to talk all things Star Trek. During the conversation with ET’s Philiana Ng, Ajala praised his character - Book - working with series star Sonequa Martin-Green, and the two cats that play his queen - Grudge. Jones discussed what’s ahead for the Discovery crew, and how the 900 plus year jump into the future will affect the series going forward. Jones later discussed the Federation, and how finding them could - but likely won’t - affect who’s in Discovery’s Captain’s chair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0coyV6TUAls Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Online Takes A Dive for Science By Thomas Reynolds During Star Trek’s more-than-50-year history, its relationship with real-world science has been...contentious, at times. I mean, take your pick: transwarp salamanders, weekly mystery-flavor particles, and the JJ-prise plummeting a quarter of a million miles to Earth in three minutes, just to name a few. Clearly Trekkies don’t find it bothersome--if anything, it’s part of the franchise’s charm (seriously though, three minutes???). That said, we’ll always appreciate verisimilitude whether we see it on screen or feel it in-game. Even if we need Dr. Hurt to point it out for us plebs. On November 7th, Star Trek Online is hosting a panel for the Vendor’s Haul Virtual Convention with some serious scientific star power. Franchise science advisor Erin Macdonald, “Bad Astronomer” Phil Plait, and Senior Content Designer Jesse Heinig will put the “Gravity Kills” TFO under the scope for both science and entertainment. How do you pull a story out of something so dense that light can’t escape it? Is spaghettification possible with the game engine? Join the panel at 10 AM PT to find out. Prometheus Bundled By Thomas Reynolds If escort carriers or science vessels aren’t your thing, then the Ships of the Line series has likely left you feeling left out. But we have good news, as long as you’re a fan of tactical escorts! No, it’s not because revenge is traditionally prepared with a mortar and pestle. Nor is it because modern variations of revenge might include seafood or watermelon. No, revenge is like gazpacho because it’s zesty. It’s refreshing. Most importantly, it is best served cold….and captains, I do hope you brought your appetites. The “Best Served Cold” TFO returns to all platforms on November 12th for the latest three-week special event. As usual, foiling Aakar’s prison break 14 times during the event will earn the Grand Prize, marks, and dilithium. Also, a Featured Episode Weekly Reward Box will be given for the first time the TFO is completed each week. However, characters on different platforms will get different Grand Prizes. Console players who defend the Empire will receive Molor’s Flaming Sword, which is obviously what it says: a Gre’thor-branded flaming sword. However, it’s not the only spicy porcine powerhouse making an appearance. The magma Targ of Gre’thor charges into the Zen Store on November 12th, with a temporary 20% discount off its normal 500 Zen price. With the September expansion of the game to include all of the Star Trek film and TV multiverse, it’s safe to assume Fleet Command will endure significantly longer than Quark’s stint as Grand Nagus. Discussing Star Trek Online Experimental Ship Upgrades By Shane Hoover The Priority One Podcast team have had time to use our first few Star Trek Online Experimental Ship Upgrade Tokens, and we’d like to discuss our first impressions for our listeners. If you’ve been trapped in a transporter buffer for an extended time, let us remind you how the Experimental Ship Upgrade Tokens work. So, what’s the verdict on how these upgrades affect your gameplay? In our official (it’s not official) and extremely scientific (it wasn’t scientific) study, here’s what Priority One team members thought. You might also find yourself able to stack 3 and 4 piece set bonuses that weren’t in your build before T6-X. T5-U! The other big area of impact for these X Upgrades is the opportunity to bring your favorite T5-U ship’s performance up to levels that let you keep flying it even though it’s not Top-of-the-Line. Quite a few captains we’ve talked to have done just this. If your favorite ship is a T5 Tempest Patrol Escort or T5 Dyson Destroyer, these upgrades might just breathe new life into your enjoyment of it. Just remember, if you upgrade your T5-U ship to T5-UX, the upgrades won’t carry over when a Tier 6 refit of the ship comes down the line.

Show Notes This week, we have the text of the forum comments and discussion prompts, and sources for submitted research pieces. Some comments have been shortened or reformatted. Dan: I would like to know your opinion on why certain Mobile suits are called Gundam, and others aren’t. Take the MK II, it’s made of titanium alloy, but it’s called a Gundam. The Hyaku Shiki and Rick Dias are both made of Gundarium Alloy, ( Luna Titanium retconned name) but are not classified as Gundams. LC: I would like you guys to do an occasional deeper dive into the suits themselves. They're characters in the show, and I'd love an occasional conversation about the aesthetics and in-universe story behind them. Sean: Why is the Hyaku Shiki the best MS ever? Robert submitted a research piece about the boat we mentioned in episode 2.19 of the podcast (the one on which Namicar Cornell travels, and where Mirai and her children are held). Sources: definition and explanation of hydrofoils, about the historic hydrofoil passenger service between Hong Kong and Macau, the current hydrofoil passenger service called TurboJET, about the USS Plainview (to which this ship's design might be a reference), and video of the USS Plainview in action. LC: Gundam gets worse the more it strays from harder sci-fi. Zeta is an excellent series that did much good for the franchise, but in my opinion it also created a lot of the things I don't specifically like, primary among this the deeper woo of newtypes. I (admittedly personally) prefer the more grounded aspects of the franchise (yes I understand the humor of enjoying the grounded aspects of a series about giant robots.) I would much rather have it be a way of serving up deeper philosophical and ethical conversations than about new-age post-jedi SPACE MAGIC. Needs more Charma: Toward the end of First Gundam, Gihren and Degwin Zabi share an infamous scene in which Degwin asks if Gihren, Zeon’s “Supreme Leader,” has ever heard of Adolf Hitler. Gihren then describes himself as “a follower of Hitler.” The conventional reading of this scene, and the one Thom & Nina discussed on the podcast, is that Degwin is accusing Girhen of being like Hitler and Gihren eagerly accepts the accusation. As Thom put it, this is when the show turns to the audience and states outright that the whole thing has been a metaphor for World War II. However, I think this scene actually shows that Gihren is an analog not for Hitler, but for his follower Mussolini. Both relied on an external force more powerful than themselves (Mussolini relied on Hitler, Gihren relied on Newtypes). Gihren, like Mussolini, is incoherent as a commander. And he’s killed by Kycilia, similar to the way Mussolini was executed by Italian partisans. The true stand-in for Hitler in First Gundam is actually Char. There are two reasons for this. First is the relationship between Gihren (as Mussolini) and Char - Gihren is weaker in every way and relies on Char’s strength for the sake of achieving his own ambitions. Just as Mussolini’s fascist Italy relied on Hitler’s Nazi Germany. Second, Char is depicted as having taken up but also warped his father’s philosophical beliefs, creating a violent perversion of Zeon Deikun’s philosophy. This reflects Hitler’s own self-aggrandizing interpretation of the philosophy espoused by his mentor Dietrich Eckart. I think the Char/Lalah relationship is more an allegory of the relationship between Hitler and the party and the German public given that both Lalah and Germany rely exclusively on Char/Hitler for survival and also shows how the manipulation of said devotees can lead seeming innocent people to commit barbaric acts in the name of a moral crusade, often against their own self interest. Steven B.: The topic I’m most interested in is theorizing what Gundam manga & light novels could be adapted into anime. What can I say? I love liminal spaces and your podcast is built around only the parts of Gundam that exist as anime. Now, unless I’m mistaken, such adaptations were nonexistent in the Gundam franchise up until the past decade, which saw 4 (that I know of). I know Tomino himself wrote a novelized version of Char’s Counterattack before the film was made, but I’m given to understand it was a soft pitch and by no means a hit on its own. With Hathaway’s Flash coming this winter, what the hell, I want to run down a Top 5 Non-anime Gundam That Could Maybe Become Anime Gundams Some Time in the Near Future. Crossbone Gundam Char’s Deleted Affair The Plot to Assassinate Gihren Zabi École du Ciel We’re Feddie Hooligans!! Austin: Why doesn't Amuro know how to shake hands? What happened on that dock with Kamille? That was the most confused congratulations ever. (This is a reference to the episode where they shake hands on the dock in Hong Kong after rescuing Mirai) Kyle F.: While the Soviet Buran was superficially similar enough to the US Shuttle to be called a copy, it differed in a principally important way. The Shuttle itself was the launch vehicle, aided by an external fuel tank and 2 boosters while the Buran was merely the payload delivered to orbit by a separate rocket system that also used two boosters. With Rogue One and Halo Wars 2 on the way, the Game Boys dedicate this episode to the cool individuals who elect to wear dope armor in space, like Stormtroopers! Okay, so maybe not Stormtroopers in this episode, but this episode does include Halo's Spartans as Tim and Ryan talk about the original Halo Wars and Halo: Spartan Assault. Then, Bungie's been bad again and the Game Boys dissect the latest Destiny blunder.

NOW you can listen to the story.Into the Nth Dimensionby David D. LevineThe fence around Dr. Diabolus's lair is twenty feet tall, electrified and topped with razor wire. I'd expected no less. From one of the many pouches at my belt I pull a pair of acorns and toss them at the base of the fence. I exert my special power. Each acorn immediately sprouts, roots digging through asphalt as the leafy stem reaches skyward. Wood fibers KRACKLE as the stems extend, lengthen, thicken, green skin changing to grayish bark in a moment. Leaves SSHHH into existence; branches reach out to the neighbor tree, twining themselves into rungs. Before the twin oaks have reached their full height I spring into action, clambering up the living ladder as it grows, creeping along a limb even as it extends over the razor wire. It's a dramatic, foolhardy move, but I can't delay -- Sprout is in peril! The branch sags under my weight, lowering me to within ten feet of the ground, and I leap down with practiced ease. Again I concentrate, and the two trees wither away behind me, a gnawed patch of asphalt and a few stray leaves the only sign they'd ever existed. I feel their pain as they wilt and die, but I don't want my intrusion discovered sooner than necessary. The loss of their green and growing lives is just the latest of the many sacrifices I've made. I press onward.Slippery elm makes short work of the side door lock; mushrooms blind security cameras and heat sensors. These bright corridors, humming with electricity and weirder energies, are cold places of steel and concrete, offering me no plants or plant matter to leverage my powers. I've faced worse. I prowl quickly, silently, keeping my head down, all senses alert to any trace of the kidnapped Sprout.Voices! I duck into an alcove as two of Dr. Diabolus's goons round the corner. As soon as they've passed I spring out behind them, tossing seeds at their feet. Fast-twining English ivy ensnares one before he can cry out, but the other evades its tendrils. "Phyto-Man!" he gasps.POW! my fist responds. He drops cold beside his still-struggling comrade, whose eyes glare with hatred above his smothered mouth. I direct the ivy to bind the unconscious goon as well, so he'll raise no alarm when he awakes.Even their underwear is synthetic fiber. Dr. Diabolus is thorough, I'll grant him that.Deeper and deeper into the cavernous lair I probe, keeping an eye on the pipes and conduits that line the ceiling, smaller leading to larger, following the branch to find the trunk. I know Dr. Diabolus; wherever he's holding my sidekick it will be near his latest contrivance, and all his inventions require massive amounts of power. If only he'd gone solar instead of stealing plutonium, we might have been allies. At last I come to a massive, vault-like door, all steel and chrome, set in a concrete wall into which many thick conduits vanish. But nothing is more persistent than a plant. I tuck dozens of tiny dandelion seeds into the crack between door and jamb. Their indomitable roots reach deep, swelling and prying, until with a WHANGG of tearing metal the door bursts from its frame. With my own muscles I wrench the shattered door aside and burst into the chamber. Dr. Diabolus turns to me, cape swirling. "You disappoint me, Phyto-Man," he sneers, his artificial eye glowing red. "I expected you here half an hour ago.""Traffic was terrible," I quip. The chamber is dominated by a complex machine, seething with arcane energies that make my head swim, but there's no sign of Sprout. "What have you done with my sidekick, you fiend?""I sent him to... the Nth Dimension!" He pulls a lever on the control panel before him. A ten-foot iris of blue steel in the center of the machine SNICKs open, revealing...Looking into the opening makes my eyes feel like they're being pulled out of my head. It's as though all the colors of the palette have somehow been smeared together with... others... forming impossible combinations of hue and tone that swirl sickeningly. But worse than that, the weird amalgam of color seems to bend... around a corner that isn't there. It's painful to see, even harder to look away.CHANGG! Something hard and cold fastens onto my bicep, breaking the spell. "What?" I cry. Before I can move, a second steel claw CHANGGs onto my other arm. CHANGG! CHANGG! CHANGG! I'm caught like a fly, steel bracelets ringing my arms, legs, and neck. Jointed metal arms haul me off the floor, suspend me in the air before the gloating Dr. Diabolus. "HAHAHAHAHA!" he laughs as I struggle in vain. "You've foiled my plans for the last time, Phyto-Man!""If you've harmed Sprout--!" I growl through clenched teeth, straining against the imprisoning metal."My dear Phyto-Man, I must confess... I don't know!" He works the controls and the arms propel me, none too gently, toward the yawning portal. The uncanny colors swirl crazily, filling my vision, seeming to tug at every fiber of my being. "But whatever has become of your Sprout, you will shortly be joining him there. Bon voyage, Emerald Avenger!"The arms thrust me forward. With a SPRANK! the five claws open simultaneously, flinging me into the swirling abyss.A hard, gritty surface presses against my side. I'm cold, my head is spinning, and everything hurts. There's a thin, rushing sound off in the distance. Traffic?I sit up and open my eyes. And immediately I wish I hadn't.There's nothing to see but a cracked and filthy concrete floor and my own hands, but they're all wrong... seriously wrong. The floor curves away from me in every direction -- the same impossible curvature I'd seen in Dr. Diabolus's portal -- despite the fact that it looks and feels flat. And the surface looks like... like concrete multiplied by itself. Cracks are crackier. Grit is grittier. It's all realer than real; it pounds on my eyes as though I were staring into the sun, though there's barely any light. And the color is not just gray, but a weird amalgam of thousands of different grays blended smoothly together. A whole shining rainbow of grays. My heart is pounding. I've faced death many times, fought monsters, escaped from traps, but I've never experienced anything this disturbing. Always before the threat came from outside, but now it's me -- my own perceptions -- that have changed. My hands, too, are a disconcerting, amplified version of themselves. I turn them before my eyes, and as they rotate I seem to see both sides at the same time as the front. In color they are... kind of an ultra-pink, not the plain pink I've seen every day of my life but an eye-hurting blend of unnatural shades. Pinks that don't exist, have never existed. And as I look more closely I see disturbing swirls of texture in my skin, spiraling like microscopic galaxies, like nothing I've ever seen before.I swallow and rip my attention away from my own fingers. Have I been drugged? I shake my head hard, but that just makes the headache and dizziness worse. I pound my fists on the ground, but though I feel the impact and the pain there's no comforting THUD, just a muffled thump so faint and distant I might as well be imagining it. "Hello?" I call. No, nothing wrong with my hearing; my voice bounces back to me from the darkness, echoing off the distant, unseen walls. To my surprise there's an immediate reply. "Michael?" The voice is heartbreakingly familiar. I feel a twinge of hope."Sprout?" I peer into the darkness, hoping for a glimpse of green tights and pointed shoes. It's a ridiculous outfit. Why have we never changed it?And why have I never wondered that before?"It's me, Michael. Richard."A familiar figure appears in the dim distance, but with everything so strange here I can't afford to relax. "Is this a secure area? We should stick to code names...""No need. There's no Sprout here, and no Phyto-Man either."Worries spring up in my mind -- impostors, hypnosis, possession, brainwashing -- but I decide to bluff it out in case there are unseen observers. "Well, I'm here now, Sprout." "This all seems very strange, I know, but don't worry. Everything will be all right."Despite his reassurances, there's a strangeness about Sprout as he approaches. He's wearing street clothes, in colors and textures as hallucinogenic as everything else here, and his face combines familiarity with an alien super-reality exactly as my own hands do, but the really disturbing thing is the way he moves. Each step flows into the next with a weird gliding motion that propels him forward seamlessly, without transitions. It's like he's rolling toward me on a treadmill, constantly cresting a hill that isn't there. I push down feelings of nausea and... and fear. Never in all my adventures have I faced anything as disquieting as this place. "Where am I?""Dr. Diabolus called it the Nth Dimension, but the people here just call it the world." He's reached me now, and the mingled concern and relief in his face match the conflicting emotions in my own heart. "I'm so glad you're finally here."He bends down and helps me to my feet, a disturbing reversal, and I find that I move with the same unnatural glide that he does. Even more disturbing, I find I'm naked. "My costume!" I cover myself with my hands as best I can, but the loss of my belt pouches, my carefully nurtured collection of seeds, leaves me feeling not just nude but defenseless.I reach out with my powers. Perhaps a seed from a discarded Fig Newton lies in a crack on the floor, a seed I can grow into leaves to cover my nakedness. But there's nothing; my powers are dulled almost to nonexistence. I can feel wood beams supporting the ceiling high above, but I can't warp them to my will. I'm helpless. For the first time in... I can't remember when."Don't worry," Sprout says, "no one here wears costumes. I brought you some clothes." He turns, the motion revealing sides and back, width and depth and thickness, all at once. I groan and nearly lose my balance. "Oh!" he says. "I'm sorry. Try closing one eye. It helps."I do, and it does -- the colors are still wrong but the disorienting sense of everything being too far away and too close at the same time is greatly reduced. Sprout -- Richard -- reaches into a rustling paper bag and hands me a folded bundle. Putting the clothes on is a challenge. Each trouser leg recedes like a portal to another world; buttons and zippers feel much larger, more detailed than they should. I close my eyes completely and let my instincts take over. It makes a big difference. How many times in my life have I dressed myself? But this still feels like the first time.I sit on the filthy floor to tie the unfamiliar shoes. "That's better," I say. "Now let's get to work." Maybe action will still the trembling dread in my heart. "There's no time to lose -- we need to get back to our own dimension and defeat Dr. Diabolus before it's too late!"Richard smiles and shakes his head. I'm starting to get used to the weird multi-dimensional effect. "Don't worry, there's plenty of time." He puts out a hand. "Come on. I'll explain over coffee."Sprout's lack of concern raises anew the questions I'd had about drugs, hypnosis, imposters. But, lost in a strange, incomprehensible world, I have no better alternative to offer. I take his hand. His hand is warm and soft in mine. When was the last time I'd grasped it without gloves, without haste, without danger all around? He leads me across the floor -- now that my eyes have adapted a bit to the darkness and strangeness I see that the space is a cavernous, disused warehouse -- to a corroded metal door. It opens with a muted squeak of rusty hinges, not the SKREEK I would have expected, but once we pass through it to the street I'm assaulted by a cacophony of sounds, visions, and smells more intense than New Year's Eve in Metro City. Cars in an astonishing variety of designs and colors careen by, with the same seamless motion as Sprout's walk but a hundred times faster. Each one seems to zoom in from the horizon and vanish away to infinity all in a moment, but even as they speed by I can't help but notice their scratches and dents and chips in the paint and a hundred other details. It's a dizzying kaleidoscope of color and detail."Whoa!" I cry out as Sprout hauls me back from the curb."Careful, big guy." He pats my shoulder. "You're not invulnerable here.""Well, I've never been in Dynamic Man's league...""No, I mean you can really get hurt easily. It doesn't take much, and it takes a long time to heal. Look at this." He pulls up his sleeve, revealing a hideous scab on his elbow. "I scraped this on a brick wall when I first got here. Just a little scrape, nothing I'd even have noticed if I were in a fist fight with the Demolisher, but it hurt like a son of a bitch --"I've never heard such language. "Sprout!""-- and a month later it's still not all the way better."A month? Immediately I'm on high alert again. Has the imposter slipped up? Sprout only disappeared the day before yesterday. But he notices the change in my expression -- faces here seem more subtle, more expressive -- and puts up a hand. "Sorry. We're on a monthly schedule. One or two of our days, more or less, is a month here. I should have told you right away." His eyes dip to the sidewalk. "There's a lot I should have told you, before."My suspicions are only slightly allayed, but I still have little alternative but to stick with this person, whether or not he's the Sprout I know. Whoever he is, he just saved my life.We walk to a coffee shop. Safe from the chaos of the street, I can begin to appreciate the wonder of this world -- the colors and textures, the tears in the vinyl seat's upholstery, the individual grains of spilled sugar on the laminate tabletop. My spoon makes a tiny tink, tink noise as I stir my coffee. The flavor is astonishing -- rich and sweet and dark. "So you've been here a whole month?" He nods. "I showed up in the same place you did. It's the closest analog in this world to Dr. Diabolus's lair. It took me quite a while to figure this place out, but I finally did.""You always were the brains of this partnership." Before Sprout, there had been no Phyto-Computer, no chemical lab, no advanced cross-breeding program in the Hidden Greenhouse. I'd really been little more than a thug with a green thumb."This world... it's like a layer above our world. Everything here is... bigger. More complex. More detailed. Even the color spectrum... there's an infinity of different colors here, Michael."I think back on the time I fell into the Hollow Earth, and how I had to help the downtrodden people there throw off the tyrannical overlord Karg before I could return to the surface. "Then they must have even bigger problems than we do. More villainous villains! More despotic despots! More disastrous natural disasters!" I find myself grinning with anticipation. "This could be our greatest adventure!""You might think so, but I haven't seen any sign of it. There aren't any villains here.""It's some kind of Utopia, then?""Not really." His face squinches up the way it does when he's thinking hard. "There are people who do bad things. But every time someone does something that seems entirely villainous to me, a whole bunch of other people come along and say it was really the right thing to do. I'm kind of confused, really." He shakes his head. "Even bank robbers have their defenders here. And there are tornadoes and hurricanes and earthquakes, but they're... diffuse. I mean, yeah, people get hurt, but you never see the President's daughter trapped under a collapsed building or someone racing to get the secret plans to the hidden base before the whole Eastern Seaboard becomes uninhabitable.""Sounds... boring.""Oh, it's not!" His eyes brighten and he grabs my hands across the table. "It's the most wonderful place, Michael. There's art and culture and nature like nothing you've ever seen. Not just stuffy charity balls where the only exciting thing is when The Rutabaga tries to steal the debutante's diamond necklace. I can't wait to show you Turandot."I pull my hands from his. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, kiddo. We're not here to be tourists. We're here for a reason. And once our job is done here, we'll go back where we came from. That's the way the world works.""Not this world. In this world you can do whatever you want, make the best of what you've got, succeed or fail or just muddle along... you're not limited to playing the role you were born into, fighting the same villains and foiling the same plots over and over again. Not like our world." He reaches into his hoodie's front pocket, pulls out a slim colorful magazine. "To the people here, we're fictional!"The title of the magazine is The Amazing Phyto-Man, issue 157. On the cover, a hulking over-muscled brute with a ridiculous green outfit and a caricature of my own face smacks a tentacled monstrosity in the beak. The pages inside are divided into squares and rectangles, each bearing a picture and some text...It shows the whole story of how I got here. Over the fence, down the corridors, the confrontation with Dr. Diabolus, the metal arms flinging me into the portal.I feel as though the world has been jerked out from under my feet. "This is impossible. Absurd. Some kind of hoax.""It's no hoax. There were ten copies of this one on the rack I bought it from. All our friends have their own publications too." He taps the final panel, showing me screaming as I fall into the swirling colors... but the colors on the page are the flat, limited palette of the world I came from. "This is how I knew you'd be arriving here."I stare at the page. It's wood pulp with vegetable inks. My powers are weak here, almost nonexistent, but I can feel the minuscule thread of green life in it. In some ways this stupid little magazine is the only thing in the whole chromium-and-vinyl coffee shop that's real. The only thing that's real...I turn back a page. It's one large panel, with Dr. Diabolus laughing "HAHAHAHAHA!" as I struggle in the grip of the metal arms. I stare at his flat, cartoonish face.I exert my power. It's not easy. What I'm trying to do is unlike anything I've ever done before. My teeth grind together; my pulse pounds in my temples. This is as hard and as strange as the very first time I ever made a seed sprout. It had been an apple seed, a discarded pip from my lunch, that happened to be lying on the floor the day that eerie green-glowing meteorite had crashed into the experimental greenhouse with its stocks of Growth Serum X. That tiny seed, and the potential apple tree within, had been all that stood between me and certain death as the heavy beam had come crashing down toward me. As though in a dream I'd sensed its potential, I'd reached out, I'd pulled harder than I'd ever pulled on anything before... and the tree burst into being, root and branch and leaf cushioning the beam's fall and saving my life. That had been the first time I'd felt that green power flowing through me. Now I feel it again, a thin green thread of life pulsing in the dead, flattened wood pulp before me. But this time it's different somehow, pulling at me even as I pull at it.Sweat stings my eyes and runs down my nose. I keep straining...And then Dr. Diabolus blinks. The caricature face turns fractionally toward me, its look of triumph beginning to change into one of astonishment...It's more than I can sustain. I collapse, my breath rushing out in a whoosh as I fall back into the padded seat. The page before me reverts to its previous form, but I feel a sense of triumph. Sprout snatches the magazine away. "What did you do?" "I used my powers. I touched our world. I made a change." "So what?""We can use this!" I pound the table. "I don't know how, but somehow we can use this magazine to get back to our own world!""Hush!" Sprout pats the air with his hands; I notice that the server and the other patrons are staring. I sit down, noticing as I do that I'd surged to my feet. "Michael... I don't want to go back to the world we came from.""We have to!"He looks at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. And then he bolts from the table. I stare stupidly at the door as the little bell over it tinkles, then take off after him.Sprout's fast, but ever since that day in the experimental greenhouse I've been stronger and tougher and faster than most people, and at least some of that seems to have come through the portal with me. I manage to make it through the door before his heels vanish around the corner.Running in this world is a kaleidoscopic, hallucinogenic experience. Walls seem to rush at me, a riot of color and texture; cars veer and swerve, horns blaring. But I keep my eyes fixed on Sprout's blue hoodie as he dashes across streets, pushes through crowds of protesting civilians, runs down alleys. Block after block, I'm gaining. Sprout was always the smart one in our partnership, but I'm the one who battled The Piledriver to a standstill. Soon I'm only a few feet behind. We're racing down an alley, dodging around dumpsters and piles of newspaper, when I get almost close enough to touch him. He looks over his shoulder... and trips on a bundle of magazines. He tumbles on the concrete with an "oomph" that sounds almost like something from our original world.I catch up to him just as he's sitting up. Bright red blood runs from his nose; there's a rusty smell. "Guh?" he says.I bend down, put an arm around his shoulder. "Are you all right, old buddy?"He stares into my eyes for a moment, blood painting his nose and mouth. And then he kisses me.I taste blood. I feel his warm lips soft under mine. I kiss him back. Then, horrified, I push him away. "What are we doing, Sprout?""Kissing. And you liked it as much as I did." His bloody lips twist into an ironic smile. "If you couldn't figure that much out, I guess I really am the brains of this partnership.""But... but you're just a kid!"He glares at me. "I'm twenty-two, Michael."Twenty-two? It's strange to realize that he's right. He was fifteen when I adopted him after Maniac killed his parents, but that was... seven years ago. Where did the time go? How had I failed to notice he'd grown into a lithe, attractive young man? "Even so... it's... it's wrong.""Maybe where we came from. Not here." He pulls a bandana from his pocket, wipes his mouth. Blood still trickles from his nose but it's slowing. "This world is better than ours, Michael. It's complex and it's mundane and it's sometimes tedious, but it's not just the same round of villains and fights and secret identities over and over again. It's... it's real, Michael. And here I can be what I've always wanted to be, instead of just playing a role." He holds out the bandana. "And so can you."Sprout keeps holding out the bandana. After a while I take it, and wipe my own mouth. Then I stand up. "I'm a hero, Richard. It may be a role, but it's the only role I know."Sprout just looks at me. The expression on his blood-spattered face is a sick compound of longing, sadness, disappointment. Perhaps I'm learning how to understand what I see in this world.I wonder what the expression on my own face tells him."Give me the magazine, Sprout. We'll take it to the warehouse where we came in. I figure that's the best place to try going back to our world.""No."Sprout lies at my feet, looking so small and weak, the front of his blue hoodie stained black with his blood. I could take the magazine from him easily. "I'll find another copy.""You don't have any money to buy one.""I'll steal it."He gives a weak little laugh. "Liar."I have to smile myself. "Okay, maybe not." I sit back down. "Come back with me, Sprout. You know it's where we belong."He sits up, leans against me. His shoulder is warm, the only warm thing in this cold, garbage-strewn alley, and I let it rest on my chest. "Give this world a chance, Michael. You've only just arrived. I've already found a job at a nursery. You could work there too." He looks up at me. His nose has stopped bleeding. "We could share the apartment."I consider the idea. I put my arm around my sidekick, lean back against the filthy brick wall, and think very hard about it. This world is amazing, with its details and colors and motions and flavors. And to share it with Sprout would be... something I hadn't even realized I desired. But in the end, it's duty that wins out. "I'm sorry, Sprout. Even if I wanted to -- and there's a part of me that does, believe me -- it's more than just you and me. There are people depending on us back home. If we don't go back there, who'll keep the Scimitar Sisters in check?" I give him one last squeeze, disentangle myself, and stand up. "Coming?""You're sure I can't change your mind?"I'm so, so tempted. "I'm sure.""Then I'm coming too." He stands, brushes himself off. "I'd rather be a cartoon hero with you than alone here."We walk hand-in-hand back to the warehouse. As we pass the coffee shop, I pause. Sprout looks up at me, expectant. "I, uh... I still have some of my powers here." I clear my throat. "I wonder if there's.... if there's any way we can bring... some of this world, back to ours?""I don't think so." He points to a small shield printed in the corner of the magazine's cover. "There are rules against it."Finally we find ourselves again in the dark, echoey space where we entered this world. I think about how strange it looked to me when I first arrived, and I realize I've grown used to these new perceptions. My old world will seem so flat and colorless by comparison. Sprout stands beside me as I spread the magazine out in a patch of sunlight. There is no joy in me as I contemplate the garish images full of POW and KRUNCH, only a dull sense of obligation. "It's not too late to change your mind," Sprout says. "We can make a life together here.""I'm sorry, Sprout. Our world needs saving." But even as I say it, I know I'm trying to convince myself as well as him. I hold out my hand.Without a word, he takes it.I bend down and stare hard at the last page, showing my cartoon avatar falling into the vortex between worlds. I exert my will, block out all other sensations, focus my powers on the ink-saturated wood pulp. Somehow, I know, I can use this image of the portal to return myself and Sprout to the world where we were born. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. I concentrate. I work my power. I push and pull and strain... this is as hard as the time I used pea vines to temporarily close up the Grand Canyon. Harder.I strain still more intensely. The printed vortex begins to whirl...I feel again, just as I did on that first day in the experimental greenhouse, the deep connection between my soul and the green life underlying the page...I feel the warmth of Sprout's hand in mine...And I realize that the connection runs both ways. With an unprecedented effort of will, I reverse my power. Where before the meteor's green energy had flowed into me at my moment of greatest need, now I send the energy flowing from myself into the printed page. I scream in pain as the power drains from me like my life's blood. The image before me springs to life. Just as the metal claws release, the cartoon me on the page reaches down and tears open his belt. Seeds of all descriptions pour out in their thousands, most falling into the vortex, but many others sprouting and twining and filling the portal with leaves and stems and branches. I bounce off the web of vegetable matter, springing right back toward Dr. Diabolus. WHAM! My fist connects with the villain's chin. Then all is blackness.Later. I open my eyes, and the first thing I see is Dr. Diabolus's lab. Everything is flat, static, in eight garish colors. But then I blink, and realize I've fallen face-first into the magazine spread on the floor before me.I sit up. I'm no longer looking at the last page of The Amazing Phyto-Man issue 157. It's now the first page of issue 158, a single large panel. In it Dr. Diabolus, threatened by an enormous Venus flytrap, cowers at the controls of his dimensional portal, through which a grinning Sprout steps to take the hand of Phyto-Man. All's well in Metro City."Michael?" Richard is just awakening beside me. "Wha... what just happened?"It takes me a long, reflective moment to find an answer to his question. "I... I sent the power back where it came from, I think." I look within myself. It certainly isn't in there any more. "It's with him now." I tap the page. Richard's eyes dart from the page to my face. "But that's you.""Not any more. I'm just Michael now." I stroke the flat, cartoon version of myself with my fingertips. "Phyto-Man is back where he belongs. I don't know how much of me went with him, but I hope... I hope he enjoyed his day in this world. Maybe he can use what I learned here to make Metro City a better place.""But what about... us? What happens next?"I close the magazine. "I don't know. Isn't it amazing?"END“Into the Nth Dimension” was originally published in Human For A Day, edited by Jennifer Brozek and Martin H.
