“From being homeless for 23 years to having a reason to live, I felt a strong desire to give back to those who are just like I was. Since 1999, Anthony’s passion has been providing specialized treatment for individuals who suffer with mental illness combined with a substance use disorder. With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from California State University, Fullerton, Anthony developed and directed a long-term residential treatment model, which has fueled his dream to open a home for those who have suffered from the disease of addiction and mental illness called Brown Manor. He recently wrote a book entitled From Park Bench to Park Avenue. In the book he describes his journey from being homeless and addicted to drugs to recovery and success using his story to inspire others.Anthony first discussed his difficult childhood with Tiffany. He grew up in an abusive household with a mother who had issues with alcohol. From an early age, in order to cope, Anthony masked his pain with drugs and did not want to go to school. He felt a lot of shame and guilt about growing up in such a dysfunctional environment that led him down a very dark path. As an adult, he was arrested several times. During one arrest an officer asked Anthony if he needed help, and at that moment, he was ready to receive it. Anthony was placed in a drug treatment center where he got sober.Although Anthony achieved sobriety, he was still homeless. One day on a park bench, Anthony says he had a spiritual awakening from God. He felt God touch his heart and was filled with an inner peace. He felt his life change from that moment and started to pray and live a life of faith. Anthony’s life began to change: he found employment and got off the streets. Even though Anthony had quit school in the 8th grade, he managed to get back into school as an adult and earn multiple degrees.Anthony then starting sharing his story openly and began to heal. Once he healed, he used his story to help others in similar situations. He did speaking engagements about mental health. He became a professor and a director of nursing services at a psychiatric hospital. He also opened up a sober house for those struggling with addiction and mental illness. Tiffany Werhner interviews Scott Kelley on Moments of Clarity with TiffanyThey covered topics related to the problems associated with the heightened stress of what we are living through with the Coronavirus pandemic. Substance use is on the rise and it's becoming more difficult to offer treatment.Journey PureJourney Pure is a substance abuse treatment facility that supports clients with substance abuse issues. Their programs including residential treatment, counseling, and support to help those who struggle with addiction to achieve sobriety. Journey pure has several locations. Scott Kelley works in business development for the entire organization. Scott Kelly has dedicated the last 27 years of his life as a mental health professional, helping others and wants to make a difference in the world.Learn more about Journey Pure and their mission to be the #1 choice for drug and alcohol rehabilitation - http://www.journeypure.comScott’s program at Journey Pure not only includes counseling, but also peer recovery specialists that help clients create and stick with a routine. This helps to motivate clients to make the necessary changes in their life while taking everything a day at a time.Episode SummaryScott points out that self-care is extremely important right now. The additional and unexpected stressors of the pandemic and civil unrest are affecting people in many different ways. One of the impacts is self-medicating with increased consumption of alcohol and other substances. Scott recommends making the time to contact supportive and caring people through video chat to maintain personal human connection.Self-Care - Set up a Routine and Stick to ItA major part of self-care is maintaining a routine. It is important that your routine be consistent. Operate off of a schedule. If you don’t know how to make a schedule for yourself, there are some apps that can help you, such as Journey, Covid Coach, and Fabulous - Daily Self Care.It seems that we are all starting to experience burnout as the pandemic continues, month after month. Burnout is highly prevalent, and we might not even notice that we are burning out. Proper self-care can prevent burnout. If we can’t practice self-care to keep ourselves balanced, then we certainly cannot be of any help to others.Scott first spoke about his experience growing up, losing his father to a heart attack at 18 years old, and how that led him into the field of helping others. His father’s passing had a tremendous impact on his family. Thankfully, Scott’s mother was intent on helping her family to cope, and she sought out family therapy almost immediately following her husband’s death. Through therapy and counseling, Scott’s eyes were opened to how proper counseling could help those in need, and that it was a necessary aspect of healing. When Scott entered college, he studied and got a degree in psychology. After graduating college, Scott worked at a mental health facility as a direct care professional. Over time, he moved up the ranks into higher positions in the mental health field, and is now the business development specialist for all of the locations of Journey Pure.Tiffany and Scott’s conversation shifted to the COVID-19 and how it is affecting the mental health of everyone. A lot of people are struggling and some who are prone to addiction are being tested in ways they never could have imagined. People are isolated at home and self-medicating. Alcohol sales are up 27% nationally over this time last year.Scott says people are grieving in many ways. We are grieving the loss of normal life, the loss of jobs, loss of physical activity, and the loss of ability to attend recovery programs and group therapy. Grieving the loss of so many different things at once is taking a major toll on everyone’s mental health. Everyone processes grief differently, but we all still go through the five stages of grief. Sometimes we go back and forth between stages. Sometimes we process grief quickly, and sometimes it becomes almost insurmountable and can take incredible lengths of time. We are all collectively experiencing a form of PTSD from the pandemic, and it’s only made worse by the racial injustices and civil unrest. An alarming statistic is an 800% increase in calls to suicide lifelines. We don’t yet have statistics about the actual increase in suicides resulting from the pandemic, but assuredly, suicide rates are increasing. It is more important than ever that we watch for the signs of depression and suicide in ourselves, and also in our loved ones. Help is out there, even though it feels like we are all going through this weird journey alone.Learn More About Scott’s Work and How You Can HelpFollow or Contact Journey PureWebsite: http://www.journeypure.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/JourneyPure/Twitter: https://twitter.com/JourneyPureFollow and Contact Scott Kelley on Social MediaTwitter: https://twitter.com/DSKelley1234Facebook: www.facebook.com/dscott.kelley.3LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/scott-kelley-559b6715/Instagram: www.instagram.com/scottkelley1234/Special Thank You to Our Sponsors of this Episode of Moments of Clarity with Tiffany• Forever Forward Financial - https://www.facebook.com/ForeverForwardFinancial• "When the Dust Settled" a book by Joe Potosi available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon - https://amzn.to/3ezZGmu• Don Lawson Music - http://www.reverbnation.com/donlawson• Carbon Design & Architecture - http://www.carbonae.com• Building Beyond Me - http://www.buildingbeyond.meThank you for helping us to end the stigma on mental health. He had aspirations of becoming a pro baseball player, but he ended up hurting his arm and started taking prescription meds which started him down the path to a hopeless opioids addict. From a prescription all the way to heroin. At 21, his parents had an intervention on him and said he needed to get help, but at that point he was not doing it for himself, he was doing it to please his parents. He did not want to feel the way he was feeling. He went to a treatment facility for the first time his life, complained the whole way through it and did the bare minimum in a 28 day stay.Stephen resisted help for years. He was finally forced to face his problem after the paramedics resuscitated him twice in one day. On February 28, 2017, when he left work he overdosed while he was driving. The paramedics found him unresponsive in his car. He woke up in the hospital and was told he was lucky to be alive. He would have died if they did not find him. He left the hospital, went home and took another dose of heroin. The same paramedic crew that just saved him 5 hours prior to the second overdose found him unresponsive at home.Stephen went to several treatment facilities, but it wasn't until the 6th or 7th time that it finally clicked. Putting together all of the information he received through treatment, he finally started to take action and allow for help.Soon after his last treatment facility experience, he began a path to helping other people with substance abuse challenges. The best gift of sobriety is helping others and “watching the light turn on in someone else’s eyes.”Stephen has been dedicated to helping other break the chain of addiction for over 4 years and has found his life purpose in this cause. There are a lot of people that are turning to substance use to get through the anxiety of this pandemic. One of the causes of relapse at the moment is isolation, boredom, etc. It is so vital to have human connection to stay sober. How do you help a loved one? Give them an ultimatum if they do not seek help. Do not enable them.Stephen is a public speaker, particularly at schools and to young people. He covers several topics including suicide, worthlessness, hopelessness, and not fitting in, etc. He also speaks about the 4 stages of life:1) Childhood/Upbringing2) High School Years3) Addiction/Struggle4) Road To Recovery. There is no discriminiation on whom addiction affects. No one begins using drugs recreationally at a young age. It is usually a result of depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, divorce, trauma, and so on. This is the time to intervene because as people get older, recovery becomes harder. There is no better time than RIGHT NOW to get help. Reach out. Help is out there. People are afraid, as was Stephen, to reach out, but overcoming the fear and taking that first step saves lives. If you are struggling, be sure to have a routine, self-care, meditate, pray, eat healthy, exercise, and seek help. Write a schedule, keep yourself accountable, and have a list of people to contact. Stephen had to learn to create routine by doing regular tasks like laundry, cooking, and self care. He was able to add in learning to play the guitar and has found music to be a huge tool in his recovery. It’s all about learning who you are and what you like to do. Get out into the world and experience the beauty of nature. Links to his contact info and work are below. On this episode of Moments of Clarity with Tiffany, Dr. David Susman PhD, joins Tiffany Werhner for a great conversation between two mental health professionals. Dr. Susman speaks honestly, from years of experience about what he is witnessing about how this pandemic is taking a toll on both our mental and physical health. Even those of us that are doing our best to stay positive, exercise, eat a nutritious diet, and practice mindfulness are starting to experience the negative consequences of prolonged stress.Apps Mentioned in the Show• Instacart: https://bit.ly/moc-instacart• Covid Coach: https://bit.ly/MOC-Covid-CoachDr. Susman wrote about 12 ways that the pandemic is affecting our mental and physical health. He and Tiffany touched briefly on most of the topics and both weighed in with their professional experience and opinions.A Dozen Ways the Pandemic is Hurting Our Mental and Physical Health: https://bit.ly/2MHmDrTDr. Susman wrote about 12 ways that the pandemic is affecting our mental and physical health. He and Tiffany touched briefly on most of the topics and both weighed in with their professional experience and opinions. The Coronavirus pandemic is causing frustrations across the board. People are unemployed, worried about finances, stuck at home, isolated from friends and family, and that creates depression, anxiety, and other health challenges. In terms of managing managing anxiety, especially around leaving the safety of home and going into public Tiffany and Dr. Susman discuss the importance of strategizing when going we have to leave our homes, like going to the grocery store early in the morning or later at night when there are fewer people, making it easier to social distance. Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic attacks are common, but there are ways to minimize their impacts.Isolation is another major issue leading to depression, but there are ways to combat this. Staying in touch with friends, family and loved ones is important for everyone right now. Video chat technology, for those fortunate to have access to it, should be taking advantage of it. Video chat can add an extra level of connectedness that we can’t get from sending text messages, commenting on Facebook posts, or even talking on the telephone, however it may not be appropriate to use all of the time, so phone and messaging are still important tools for staying connected. Not only is our mental health at risk, but so is our physical health. Due to quarantine, people are not able to see doctors when they need to and gyms are closed, and it becomes easier to forego taking care of our physical health. Self-care is noted as critical, which means taking care of our sleep, nutrition, and creating an exercise routine.A very difficult topic was briefly addressed by Dr. Susman, and that is the death of George Floyd. Dr. Susman stated, “I want to be clear that I totally commit to these efforts to end systemic racism.” At approximately the 06:30 mark in the video the topic is raised. “I along with the mental health community are also grieving and standing in solidarity, wanting to learn and help find solutions to this, and we recognize that this is so traumatic and is having such an impact on our black friends and neighbors and loved ones. It is important to use our voice.”The mental health effects of systematic racism and the trauma that it creates in the black community are, in a way, another form of pandemic. People feel anger, despair, depression, and hopelessness, and that compounds with the fears we all have been having about the coronavirus. The stress of the unrest affects police officers as well, and they discuss the importance of mental health treatment for police officers during this time.Contact and Social Media Information• Website: http://www.davidsusman.com• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DavidSusmanPhD• Twitter: https://twitter.com/DavidSusman• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dsusman• Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidsusmanphd/Links Mentioned in the Show• A Dozen Ways the Pandemic is Hurting Our Mental and Physical Health - Article by Dr. David Susman, PhD: http://davidsusman.com/2020/05/29/a-dozen-ways-the-pandemic-is-hurting-our-mental-and-physical-health/• 13 Advocates You Must Know - Article on davidsusman.com: http://davidsusman.com/2020/02/13/13-great-mental-health-advocates-you-should-know• NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Health: https://nami.org• APA, American Psychological Association: http://www.apa.org• National Center for PTSD: https://www.ptsd.va.govFull list of resources available on Dr. Susman’s website: http://davidsusman.com/resourcesShow Sponsors - Let our Sponsors know you found them at MOCwithTiffany• Forever Forward Financial - https://www.facebook.com/ForeverForwardFinancial• "When the Dust Settled" a book by Joe Potosi available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon - https://amzn.to/3ezZGmu• Don Lawson Music - http://www.reverbnation.com/donlawsonThank you so much for listening. Tiffany Werhner hosted and moderated a panel discussion on Social Anxiety and Hypersensitivity.Panelists: David Aguilera, Kirk Patrick Miller, and James Prescott - Contact and project details are at the end of the description.Watch the Video of this Conversation: https://youtu.be/e2ZFDs-meC0Hear the hopes and intentions to live a less anxious life. An open and free-flowing conversation with mental health advocates, talking with vulnerability and honesty about the challenges they face particularly related to being hypersensitive and having social anxiety. We learn a bit about each as they introduce themselves, then the conversation is more free flowing. Tiffany had a few specific questions to keep the conversation focused. Our show Guests were David Aguilera, Kirk Patrick Miller, and James Prescott. All three of these gentlemen suffer with Hypersensitivity as well as anxiety, and live their day to day lives with these underlying mental health issues. The guests were all on the show to talk about social anxiety and hypersensitivity, something they all share in common. Each had his own history of dealing with the issue, and touched on a number of subjects in regard to how this level of anxiety leads to being hyper-aware. With anxiety and hypersensitivity, one is literally taking in every single input there is around them, and overwhelming their own ability to process it all. It affects everyday activities, relationships, and can often lead to physical ailments. While some of the effects were common across the panel, others were not. Everyone experiences anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and rumination differently, to different degrees, and also depending on the situation. Each of our panelists has taken their experiences and turned them into methods of helping people. See below for the links and information of each of of our panelists. After a phone call from Jennifer who asked for the panelists’ opinions on her hypersensitivity that can be so severe it makes her stay physically curled in a ball in her bed. Specifically she talked making a mistake or saying something incorrectly in a social situation, which probably anyone who has ever had anxiety could identify with. The panel immediately responded with understanding, positivity, and kindness. The group was in agreement that we are our own worst critics, noticing every single mistake we make, and dwelling on them for hours, when in reality, most other people have already forgotten about them. There’s so much more in the show, so please, take a watch, and if you can’t do that, ask your smartphone or smartspeaker to “Play Moments of Clarity with Tiffany podcast episode number 424” so you can take a listen.Guest Information:David AguileraFounder and Moderator of Beautiful Minds Online Support Group, Video BloggerJoined us from Charlotte, North CarolinaBeautiful Minds Support Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/270465390575783Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/david.aguilera.1042032LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3eXwztqKirk Patrick MillerAuthor, Teacher, Speaker, Mental Health Advocate, Advocate for Equal Rights, Violinist, Linguist, Founder and Director of The Miller-Beck Institute of MusicJoined us from ColoradoKirk's Books on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3eIWTY7Dawn of Davna, the first in the Light of Lunera Series: https://amzn.to/305izcEChaos to Cured - The True Story of Defeating Bipolar Disorder: https://amzn.to/2AyLtavThe Miller-Beck Institute of Music: https://www.facebook.com/MillerBeckMusicTwitter: www.twitter.com/chaos2curedFacebook: www.facebook.com/kirkenmillerLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kirk-millerInstagram: www.instagram.com/chaos2curedJames PrescottWriter and PodcasterJoined us from London, EnglandWebsite: https://jamesprescott.co.ukPoema Podcast Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/poemapodcastContinuing the Poema Coversation Facebook Group: https://Facebook.com/groups/poemapodcastPoema Podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/poema-podcastPodcast on Podbean: http://jamesprescott.podbean.comFacebook (wiriting and podcast): https://www.facebook.com/JamesPrescottWriterPersonal Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jamespressgangTwitter: https://twitter.com/JamesPrescott77Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jamesprescott77Moments of Clarity with TiffanyThank you for watching. Tiffany Werhner hosted Kirk Patrick Miller as a guest on Moments of Clarity with Tiffany. Kirk is an award-winning author, radio host and teacher. Tiffany and Kirk discussed current events and their impacts on those suffering with mental health conditions.Kirk Struggled with his own mental health when he was young, and it wasn't until his early 20’s that he was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. It took a long time to come to a diagnosis and a treatment plan. When he was young, he was medicated for ADHD, OCD, and Generalized Anxiety, but he continued to struggle because he was not being treated for the actual illness he was suffering from. After all of those struggles, Kirk makes it a point to explain that he believes mental illness can be managed with medication and therapy.Kirk introduced his book, “Dawn of Davna." Available on Amazon at https://amzn.to/305izcE - It is a fictional fantasy that oftentimes symbolizes mental health struggles without being blatant. He wanted his characters to be relatable to anyone struggling and it is suitable for all ages. The main message of the book is hope and compassion.Coronavirus and COVID-19 was top of mind and Tiffany and Kirk both shared their perspectives in a discusson on the topoic. Both Tiffany and Kirk are concerned about the effects this pandemic is having on those already struggling with mental health challenges. Kirk talked about the difficulty of taking care of ourselves during this challenging time. They talked about isolation, lack of employment, and how this can lead to anxiety and depression. Tiffany and Kirk talked about various ways to cope personally as well as ways we should be protecting ourselves during this virus, especially by wearing masks and social distancing.Lastly, they discussed the importance of civil discourse in the midst of protests about police brutality. Kirk stated how important it is to be able to listen and respect other people’s viewpoints even when we don’t agree with them. He talked about how to deal with online negativity from others. His rationale is to be calm, objective, and always respond with kindness. It is also vital to have strong boundaries. Kirk said it is very important for us to speak out when we see injustice in this world but to do it in a kind and respectful manner.Kirk's Books on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3eIWTY7“Dawn of Davna,” is the first book in his "Light of Lunera" series. This fantasy is acceptable for all ages and has a rich depth of symbolism for those that want it. 10% of ALL profits will be given to mental health foundations that continue to help people overcome their struggles, end the attached stigma, and promote #hope, #kindness, and #empathy. Available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/305izcEKirk also has authored and published a candid memoir, “Chaos to Cured: The True Story of Defeating Bipolar Disorder,” in which he shares the true story of his courageous journey to finding a cure for bipolar disorder with the hope that everyone will one day have a second chance in life.Available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2AyLtavKirk’s Social Media:Twitter: www.twitter.com/chaos2Facebook: www.facebook.com/kirkenmillerLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kirk-millerInstagram: www.instagram.com/chaos2curedSponsors in this show:Forever Forward Financial Group:https://www.facebook.com/ForeverForwardFinancialDon Lawson Music: https://www.reverbnation.com/donlawsonLet's be in touch!
