Send us a textChris "The Grit" Droege invites us into the fascinating intersection between combat sports, entrepreneurship, and personal growth in this compelling conversation that transcends the typical fighter interview. From the wrestling mats of Youngstown to the MMA cages of Cleveland, Chris shares how wrestling shaped not just his fighting style, but his entire approach to life. "Nobody's gonna care about you as much as you are," he explains, detailing how the individual responsibility inherent in wrestling transferred directly to his business mindset.Rather than following a traditional career path despite holding two master's degrees, Chris launched his own painting company to create the flexibility needed for his fighting career. This strategic decision removed the financial pressure that plagues many fighters, allowing him to approach MMA "purely for the love and just try to be the best in the world." His perspective on creating parallel paths—one for stability and another for passion—offers a blueprint anyone can apply to their creative pursuits. The disciplined mindset Chris developed through wrestling permeates everything from his training methodology to his business approach. He draws a brilliant parallel between paying dues in combat sports and other fields: "You don't sign up for the high school football team to make a million dollars. You're doing it for the experience, for the love of the sport." This refreshing perspective counters our instant-gratification culture with timeless wisdom about mastery requiring investment before rewards.Whether you're a fight fan, entrepreneur, or simply someone striving to align your passions with sustainable success, Chris's insights will reshape how you approach your own journey. Assessing the Laws of War

The Just Security Podcast

At their core, the laws of war seek to preserve humanity in the most difficult conditions. As Dr. Cordula Droege, the chief legal officer and head of the legal division of the International Committee of the Red Cross (or ICRC) recently wrote for Just Security, “Understood in simplest terms, the law of armed conflict acknowledges that both sides will inevitably kill, injure, detain, and destroy, but it prohibits them from dehumanizing their adversary.” She notes that “Altogether, IHL contains hundreds of rules that protect life, health, and human dignity. It is modest and imperfect – it seeks only to guarantee a modicum of humanity in situations where our humanity has already been largely compromised.” But across the world – from Gaza to Myanmar to Ukraine to Sudan – IHL is facing a moment of profound strain. Civilians are targeted. Cities are leveled. And, as Droege writes, “All too often today, the protective purpose of IHL is set aside and the rules are literally turned on their head: instead of being interpreted to protect civilians, the absence of clear violations are invoked to justify a level of death, injury and destruction that is precisely what IHL intended to avoid.” Are the laws of war inadequate? Why are some States choosing not to comply? What exactly is the problem with IHL? Dr. Droege join the show to discuss her article, “War and What We Make of the Law” with Just Security's Co-Editor-in-Chief, Tess Bridgeman, and Just Security Legal Editor and Podcast Host and Executive Producer, Paras Shah. Show Notes:  Cordula Droege (@CDroegeICRC) Tess Bridgeman (@bridgewriter)Paras Shah (@pshah518)Cordula's Just Security article “War and What We Make of the Law”Mary Wareham's Just Security article “Lithuania Leaving Cluster Munition Ban Undermines Agreement, Threatens Crucial Norms” Just Security's International Humanitarian Law coverageMusic: “Broken” by David Bullard from Uppbeat: https://uppbeat.io/t/david-bullard/broken (License code: OSC7K3LCPSGXISVI)

Are you dreaming of more flexibility so that you have time for the things that you love?  Starting a private practice is the perfect way to live life on your own terms. You set your hours and you decide what's important to you. Since it's your private practice, you get to run it how you see fit.  In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Tracy Droege to talk about how she grew her private practice with flexibility in mind so that she could still make time for her other passion- tennis. Tracy shares her goals for hiring, marketing tips, and how she plans to integrate systems as she grows.  Tracy Droge is an occupational therapist and certified ADHD provider in Temple, Texas. She started her OT private practice, The Rise Center, in order to have more flexibility as she cared for a sick family member. Although it was born out of a sad situation, she has been able to turn it into a happy one by caring for children and families who benefit from her services. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: How Tracy has created her practice around her life Tips for prioritizing things that are important When Tracy decided to start growing her private practice The hiring process The systems that have helped Tracy grow her business How Tracy stepped into the CEO role Time management tips for private practice owners I hope you found this episode inspiring. I love how Tracy created a private practice with flexibility in mind. Between caring for family members and her tennis career, having flexible hours has allowed her to have significantly more control over her time than she would if she was working in a regular setting.  Want help to grow your private practice and get some help with hiring?  Visit http://www.growyourprivatepractice.com (www.GrowYourPrivatePractice.com) to learn more about how we can help! Pretty simple. It sucks nectar with that long tongue from deep throated flowers that other bees often can't reach (because they usually have dinky lapping tongues). As a male it does not gather pollen, but it does have a trick that other bees don't have in that tucked into its expanded hind tibia is a little sachet (note: this is not a technical term) that it stashes various smelly oils and other chemicals to woo orchid bee women. In the American humid tropics they are big time common (as a group). Tim McMahon (whose gets his bank as a government engineer, but in his heart is a complete bee head) collected this in Costa Rica on his annual pilgrimage. On this episode of Open Space Radio, we are talking about BioBlitzes. And the only thing more fun than saying “BioBlitz” may be actually participating in one. A BioBlitz is an event where your community can visit your park and identify the different wildlife species in that area. It provides an opportunity for people to understand and learn about the various species in that area, and also provides critical data and information to the staff who manage those lands. As you encourage people in your community to get outside, stay active and connect with nature, a BioBlitz is the perfect opportunity to not only explore local parks, but also learn about the natural wonders around them. It can even be a COVID-19 safe activity as BioBlitzes can be structured to allow people to visit the park on their own. It may even inspire future generations of environmental stewards. On today’s episode, we’re honored to be joined by the creator of the BioBlitz, Sam Droege. Droege is a Wildlife Biologist for Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland. We’re also excited to be joined by Brett Johnson, an Urban Biologist for the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. We discuss how the BioBlitz came to be, what it looks like today, and how it is an important tool for creating ecologically beneficial habitat in local parks and for protecting species that are at risk. Droege shares how he has left the BioBlitz untrademarked and open for public use since its creation, and how local park and recreation professionals can use BioBlitzes for environmental conservation, community engagement and education. Johnson shares how these events have been beneficial in Dallas. Tune in to the full episode below to hear our full conversation and learn: How a BioBlitz helps land managers gain important insights about the species in their own parks and public spaces. Tips for park and recreation agencies considering hosting a BioBlitz. How using technology — such as mobile apps like iNaturalist — everyday people from all over the world can help inform the efforts to preserve and conserve threatened species. The most interesting things Droege and Johnson have found during their own BioBlitzes. The future of the BioBlitz, and more! Interested in learning more about BioBlitzes? You can also sign up to host a Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz this September in your own community and receive tools to help you plan a virtual event with physical distancing in mind. If your agency signs up to host a BioBlitz during the month of September, not only will you be helping raise pollinator awareness, you will also be entered to win a $1,000 prize and one of three ScottsMiracle-Gro prize packs to help with your pollinator habitats or programs!

The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds.During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life.Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal.I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. Real Food (start time 4:20): What we eat , and how we eat, is inextricably connected to our own health as well as the health of the planet.  Every decision we make—whether to bake a chocolate cake or buy it from Safeway or at a Farmer’s Market—is full of nuances and even contradictions. Megan Kimble is a writer who became obsessed with wondering how she could make a difference in the world by examining her eating habits. Her just-published book, called Unprocessed: My City-Dwelling Year of Reclaiming Real Food, is her personal journey into the scientific, public health, environmental and political issues related to food. Kimble will  speak tonight at the Boulder Book Store, at 7:30, and tomorrow night, July 30, at Tattered Cover in Denver, at 7:00 p.m. The Buzz About Bees (start time 13:49): Across the United States, buzzing pollinators are key to the growth of countless flowering plants. But many bee species are also disappearing nationwide, due to pesticide use, habitat loss, and other threats.  Dr. Sam Droege is a wildlife biologist who studies this vanishing world. He heads up the U.S. Geological Survey’s Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab. For several years he’s also led an effort to photograph bees — very, very close up.  Droege’s bee photos are the basis for a new book called “Bees: An Up-Close Look at Pollinators Around the World.” Hosts: Susan Moran, Daniel Strain Producers: Susan Moran, Daniel Strain Executive Producer: Susan Moran Headline contributions: Daniel Strain Listen to the show here:

Casey Droege is a cultural producer. Part of the team behind CSAPGH, a teacher, and a practicing artist, she is interested in building people's relationships with art in all its forms. In this discussion we talk about her formative years in Pittsburgh's Spring Hill neighborhood, (she's from a family of creatives), what to expect when you buy a share from CSA PGH, her personal work including a mural in the North Side, and why choosing your own path is more important than anything. In the discussion we talk about a show on Penn Avenue at a gallery called Fieldwork Contemporary Art. This post unfortunately didn't make it to the site before that event but I encourage people to check out what's coming up. You have to buy a share to go to the pick-up events though, so get it together and get a share before they are gone! Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Peter Droege is an expert on the role of renewable energy within the fields of urban design, development and urban infrastructure with a wide variety of experience and responsibility. He has directed and developed Solar City, a research development effort conducted under the auspices of the International Energy Agency as well as carrying out academic roles at major universities in the United States and Japan. He is presently Senior Advisor, Beijing Municipal Institute for City Planning and Design, Steering Committee member, Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN), Conjoint Professor, School of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Newcastle, Visiting Professor and Director, Centre for Sustainable Urbanism, School of Landscape Architecture and Planning, Beijing University and Chair, World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) Asia Pacific. The issues that drive his efforts are climate change-- caused in large part by burning fossil fuel--and energy security which is now in question due to Peak Oil. He speaks of the shackles" created by our current Industrial Revolution/fossil fuel based urban and socioeconomic infrastructures and the general environmental degradation, including personal health, caused by our current energy systems. Droege discusses how interconnected our life support systems are and how a total systems design approach must be applied as communities take on the transition from reliance on cheap energy from oil, with its multitude of subsidized, hidden costs. One example is the fact that half of all fresh water used in the U.S. today is used to cool oil and coal fired electric power plants. In today's world, he claims, many things seem upside down. It's more expensive to waste than save, but waste is more profitable. Efficiency must become a priority and profitable for individuals. We can't consume our way out of the problem either with a set of quick fix products or programs. We must reverse many of the "flows" which go out of our communities causing damage and decay. Many of the resources needed to make the changes to a renewable culture, can and should be freed up from current inefficiencies. We must change from our current toxic energy source. We can't consume our way out of the problem either with a set of quick fix products or programs. We must reverse many of the "flows" which go out of our communities causing damage and decay. Droege explains his vision of a new paradigm which replaces fossil fuel with renewable fuels as the energy foundation of our culture. This vision encompasses and goes beyond simple techno fixes to the heart of economic and cultural transformation. His vision realized will lead to real urban, social, environmental and economic reform, possibly revolution, by this transformation of our fundamental energy system. He gives examples from a variety of countries of a more self sufficient approach based on relocalization, community and individual empowerment, economic and social incentives and a basic reframing of what globalization is and how it may become a positive force.Interviewed at the Ecocities World Summit in San Francisco in April 2008.Websites of interest: www.solarcity.org, www.wcre.org (World Council for Renewable Energy).
