På en schweizisk internatskola möts två tonårsflickor. Ett möte som en av dem ska bära med sig långt efteråt och ständigt återkomma till i minnet. När den gåtfulla och till synes perfekta Frédérique anländer till Bausler Institut, flickskolan i Appenzell, är berättaren fjorton år. Hon har tillbringat större delen av sin uppväxt på internat, en kontrollerad och grym tillvaro där föräldrar ersatts av de olika institutionernas uppfostrare. Mötet med Frédérique blir omvälvande, ur det väcks både berättarens längtan och en alltmer växande oförlöst energi. Fleur Jaeggy föddes i Schweiz 1940 och gick själv på internatskola under sin uppväxt. Jaeggy är idag bosatt i Milano och skriver på italienska. Hennes böcker har översatts till tjugosju språk och Tuktans ljuva år, som utkom 1989, anses vara ett av hennes främsta verk.  Den senaste romanen, Proleterka, utkom på svenska 2019. Kristine Gulbrandsen är skådespelare verksam vid Norrbottensteatern i Luleå. Hon kommer ursprungligen från Norge och har tidigare hörts i bland annat Radionovellen och Dagens dikt i P1.

Han har bland andra utmärkelser tagit emot Svenska Akademiens nordiska pris 2019. Karl Ove Knausgård var sommarpratare i Sveriges Radios Sommar i P1 14 augusti 2011, alldeles efter terrorattentaten i Oslo och på Utöya. Magnus Roosmann, född 1963, är skådespelare, utbildad vid Teaterhögskolan i Stockholm. Han har varit engagerad vid en rad scener och har under mer än tjugo år framträtt i ett flertal roller på Dramaten. Magnus Roosmann är också en av de mest anlitade uppläsarna av ljudböcker i Sverige. Och när Emerentia väl tackar ja är det hon som dikterar villkoren; hon har godkänt författarparet. Författaren Magda Szabó (1917 2007) är en av Ungerns internationellt mest kända författare. Hon har skrivit barnböcker, poesi, dramatik och romaner. Dörren är kanske den roman hon mest förknippas med och den har också filmatiserats med Helen Mirren i rollen som den egenartade hushållerskan Emerentia. Uppläsaren Julia Dufvenius är skådespelare utbildad vid Teaterhögskolan i Göteborg. Hon slog igenom i tv-serien Glappet 1997 och är sedan 2007 knuten till Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern i Stockholm.
