The geography speaks for itself. The bad guys are just kilometers away, across the river. We are the only international (or locals) with a brick and mortar office downtown, for them to go for help. No assistance from govt unless elderly, and the assistance they get is shit. Office safe from “normal” shelling (tank fire, most mortars). Glide bombs and attack drones are new since Ukrainians landed on other side and have beachhead. Quietly, that is a total massacre over there — poorly kept secret here. can't do much about the big stuff … if we get hit with a glide bomb we're fucked. I like our chances. Mon wed Friday the FREE STORE AT THE FRONT is open at our office. Basic foods medicines hygiene and winter clothes. Mondays we run bread into insanely dangerous places by the Antonivky bridge, do other stuff like that. Off the radar. For city admin. We are an important “off the books asset” for them.

We transport you to Keran, which sits on the Line of Control - a ceasefire line dividing Kashmir into territories administered by India and Pakistan. Synopsis: Every first Friday of the month, The Straits Times chats with ST's correspondents in the Asia-Pacific, the US and Europe, about life as it goes on, amid the screaming headlines and bubbling crises.  At a time when people-to-people links are practically non-existent between India and Pakistan, Keran is a rare place where greetings, waves and even smiles could be exchanged. A river, less than 100 metres wide, divides both sides.  Keran, a tiny village of around 1,500, is nestled in a valley within the part of Kashmir that is administered by India. It is here that tourism has boomed in recent years. Visitors come - to stay in houses pockmarked by mortar fragments and to peep into the Pakistan-administered side of the land. In this episode, ST's foreign editor Li Xueying chats with ST's India correspondent Debarshi Dasgupta, who also shares his personal history - of family members being torn asunder after the 1947 partition of South Asia. Highlights (click/tap above): 1:14 Why India is moving to promote border tourism 3:15 A beacon of hope but one single major terrorist attack in Kashmir can set this story back by many, many years 7:31 A deep and haunting sense of loss when families are torn apart after South Asia was carved up in 1947 13:25 Difficult questions remain: what are the steps that India and Pakistan are taking to heal this long festering bilateral wound?  16:30 Other frontier towns to visit in India  Produced by: Li Xueying (xueying@sph.com.sg), Ernest Luis and Fa'izah Sani Edited by: Fa'izah Sani Follow Letter From The Bureau Podcast every first Friday of the month here: Channel: https://str.sg/JWa7 Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/JWa8 Spotify: https://str.sg/JWaX SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg Read Li Xueying's articles: https://str.sg/iqmR  Follow Li Xueying on LinkedIn: https://str.sg/ip4x Read Debarshi Dasgupta's articles: https://str.sg/wtmh Read ST's Letters From The Bureau: https://str.sg/3xRd Register for Asian Insider newsletter: https://str.sg/stnewsletters --- Discover more ST podcast channels: COE Watch: https://str.sg/iTtE In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE #PopVultures: https://str.sg/JWad Music Lab: https://str.sg/w9TX Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts --- Special edition series: True Crimes of Asia (6 eps): https://str.sg/i4Y3  The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia (5 eps): https://str.sg/wuZ2 Invisible Asia (9 eps): https://str.sg/wuZn Stop Scams (10 eps): https://str.sg/wuZB Singapore's War On Covid (5 eps): https://str.sg/wuJa --- Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! #STAsianInsiderSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CURRENT SERMON SERIES: "Walks of Faith" Life is either a daring adventure,” said Helen Keller, “or nothing at all.” The same could be said of faith. To grow deeper in faith, you must go deeper into the unknown, into vulnerability, and into risk. Jesus never said, “Come and stay put.” Instead, he said, “Come and follow me.” In this sermon series, we'll look at some of the epic walks of faith in Scripture and learn what it means to join the daring adventure of journeying with God.

Football is the American passion, but in many cases, it's more than just a sport: it's literally life or death. Acclaimed sports writer Kent Babbs witnessed how football and the great coaches that emerge from the sport, help save lives in some of the most impoverished communities across the country. Kent has been a longstanding sports writer for The Washington Post and his work was included three times in The Best American Sports Writing Anthology and was selected in the inaugural edition of The Year's Best Sports Writing. His books include “Not A Game: The Incredible Rise and Unthinkable Fall of Allen Iverson,” and “Across the River: Life, Death, and Football in an American City.” In the book, Kent recounts his year spent with the Edna Karr High Cougars in the New Orleans Neighborhood of Algiers. Led by the larger-than-life Coach Brice Brown chasing his fourth consecutive title, Coach Brown is focused on something else, giving his kids opportunity, keeping them in school, and keeping them alive. Amidst an epidemic of gun violence, broken homes, and severe poverty Coach Brown often finds himself pushed to his own limits, doing his best to keep his community together. Kent chronicles the euphoric highs and the devastating lows throughout a football season that may seem one-of-a-kind, but unfortunately is far too common across America. And, not every high school like Edna Karr has a Coach Brice Brown, who Kent calls “the greatest manager of human talent ever.” This may be our greatest podcast yet, so with that…let's bring it in!

She came from a lineage of prominent religious figures, and grew up speaking mostly Yiddish, avoiding any and all pop culture, and believing that most of the world was Ultra-Orthodox Jewish. Eventually, she was ordained as a Rabbi and started a family. The only problem? Everyone thought she was a man. In this episode, we'll hear about Abby's experiences as an author, model, speaker, rabbi, and the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic community. She'll tell us how she left her home and her family and learned to live a vastly different life only a short subway ride away. There are two New Orleans: the glamorous party city that tourists see and the day-to-day reality of the heavily segregated Black neighborhoods outside the French Quarter. That more real New Orleans is defined by economic inequality, street violence, drugs, and institutional racism. For the young people born and raised there, it is the land of no opportunity—indeed, many struggle just to survive to adulthood. One of the few paths to success for teenage boys is football, which offers a way out with the promise of college scholarships and the possibility of a lucrative pro career. But it is too easy for even the most talented high school players to get off track when faced with the fraught daily reality of life. It takes a special person to guide these young men away from preordained failure and toward success—and even to keep them alive. In Algiers, on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, that person is Edna Karr High School coach Brice Brown. Award-winning sportswriter Kent Babb first told the inspiring story of Brice Brown in the Washington Post. Now, in ACROSS THE RIVER: Life, Death, and Football in an American City (HarperOne; August 10, 2021; $27.99), Babb goes deeper, widening the narrative with intimate portraits of Brown's players, staff, and surroundings in an ever-tested community. Blending aspects of such disparate classics as Friday Night Lights, The Yellow House, and Ghettoside, Babb's accomplished multi-character narrative illuminates many lives and captures the pulse of New Orleans in all its turbulence, complexity, and defiance. Thirty-four-year-old Brice Brown found high school coaching after his own college football career. As Babb's intensive time spent with him begins, Brown has already led Karr's team to three consecutive state championships in Louisiana's ultra-competitive Class 4A division, and he and everyone in the tight-knit program are primed for a historic fourth win. “Communities such as Algiers rely on the sport as an important incentive and a vehicle to teach life skills and teamwork,” Babb observes. “Brown, for his part, uses the game to teach players that they can, and should, leave the West Bank forever. But first they must survive.” To this end, the brainy and idiosyncratic coach is like a foul-mouthed version of a community preacher. Even after practices, he keeps close tabs on his players via cell phone, patrolling their neighborhoods, often giving them (and even their parents) cash from his own pocket for daily essentials. He rides them hard when he sees their attention flagging because of the outside demands their tough existences place on them. Hanging over Brown, and the program, is the death of Karr's former star quarterback, Tollette “Tonka” George, whose shooting near a local gas station remains unsolved. It haunts the community, not least of all the young man's mother and the minor-celebrity NOPD homicide detective assigned to investigate Tonka's murder. Brown is determined to protect the young men on his team from a similar fate. One, who never knew his father and lives on his own while his mother is in prison, is a brooding natural athlete with the weight of the world on his young shoulders. The quarterback pushes against his father's expectations and ambitions, and a wide receiver squanders his middle-class advantages and gets into trouble with the law. One younger teammate manages to win Brown's outwardly hardened heart with his irreverent energy and humor, gaining the fatherly affection of a coach who's usually all-in on football, which often comes at the expense of his own personal life. More often than not, Brown also quietly takes care of his staff, assuming their financial worries or life crises as his own. As the team makes its way through the season and reaches the playoffs, Brown also jockeys behind the scenes to secure places and scholarships for his players at colleges, showing them a path to the future of which they might otherwise be unaware. Meanwhile, Brown repeatedly puts his own future on hold, refusing to pursue career opportunities that would reward his singular talents and passions. As Kent Babb takes readers inside the lives of Brown and his players, he paints an unforgettable portrait of a community mired by relentless violence and pain, but also dedication and love. Featuring eight pages of full-color photos, ACROSS THE RIVER is an arresting testament to the turbulent and tough roots of America's game and its indelible place as a pathway of hope in the lives of so many.

Pastor Drea Hairston takes the term ezer out of the confinement of the patriarchal definition and leads us to a deeper dive into the biblical context of the term. Ezer was not designed by God as a gender divide, nor a hierarchical structure, nor a patriarchal ideology. Ezer was a description of partnership and wholeness in reflection of humanity as created by God. How was ezer portrayed through the partnership of Jochebed, Miriam, and Pharaoh's daughter that would seemingly be impossible to the human mindset? How did seeing each other across social locations rescue them from isolation, ultimately becoming a story of defiance and deliverance? They were a team of ezers. How can this story of partnership inspire hope to our world that is divided and filled with hostility and violence? Drea Hairston is a pastor at Church! of Park Slope. She recently received her MA degree from City Seminary in Harlem. She is a wife and mother of four children under 12. Although growing up as a Midwestern Lutheran, she has lived in Brooklyn and been a part of her non-denominational community church for the last 15 years. She is grateful to be a part of a church that is striving to be a collective body learning and following Christ together. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/womenofwonder/support

Brought together by singer Satnam Galsian in 2018 they aim to achieve an identity that reflects both her Punjabi heritage and their UK upbringing as a whole. They began with the folk songs of Surinder Kaur and the popular songs of Noor Jehan which they infuse with John Hogg's electric guitar textures and the jazz inflections of drummer Simon Henry. The next stage was to bring in the songs from the West, songs of hope and betrayal, and plug them in. Pentangle, Elvin Jones and even The Velvet Underground have been said to be felt in the sound. New York City continues to be the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, but the state with the third most coronavirus cases —after New York and New Jersey— is Massachusetts. And just across the river from Boston is a city that has the highest per capita rate of infection in that state. It's the city of Chelsea. For generations, its residents have been primarily Latino or newly-arrived immigrants who commute to Boston to work. Maria Hinojosa sits down with Boston-based reporter and co-host of the In The Thick podcast Julio Ricardo Varela to talk about why this outbreak began and the healthcare response to it.

Many factors played into the 1968 decision to build U of L's new campus in what is now West Lethbridge. University administration, faculty, students and the City of Lethbridge all agreed the west-side location was well suited and autonomous from their temporary Junior College campus home. The Provincial Government however, did not agree and instead proposed a City referendum to determine where the university campus should be build. Student activists in particular fought that idea and took to the streets protesting in front of Lethbridge's MLA. Police got involved and arrested two students, (without charging them) but the battle lines had been drawn and two days later another demonstration occurred following U of L's first (1968) convocation ceremony in Southminster Church. With the pressure on, the Provincial Government finally relented and ratified the plans to build the new campus on the west-side. Arguable, it is the vision of these early university leaders that caused west Lethbridge to grow and flourish around the new campus in such a short time span. And certainly, the City of Lethbridge leadership was visionary in providing plenty of land for such an undertaking. The speaker will discuss the history of U of L since its inception 50 years ago. He will also describe the 1968 controversy regarding the university's location and introduce the key players and arguments that were instrumental in positioning the U of L campus where it is today. Speaker: Michael Perry Michael Perry is the archivist at the University of Lethbridge and has been on staff there for over 20 years. Born in Ottawa, Ontario and raised in Aylmer, Quebec, NELSON COLT released his EP Where I Belong last year featuring the singles Fingers Crossed, Right Where I Belong and the new one Across The River. The project was recorded in Nashville and was produced by Rob Matson. All songs on the album were written by Nelson and award-wining hitmaker Barry Brown. Nelson's influences include Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs, George Strait, Alabama and Alan Jackson. Another big influence was a Canadian Country Music legend: “We went to visit my uncle David for New Year’s Eve, and he played a guitar and sang some Hank Snow,” says Nelson. “I was in awe of that sound.” Nelson started by performing at the age of sixteen in his hometown, then he put a group together and did some touring in Ontario and Quebec for a few years. During that time, he entered all the talent shows he could find, and to his delight, winning first place in most of them. One such prize was the 1995 CKBY (Y101) Talent Search, where Nelson won a recording and touring package. Nelson has had the opportunity to be the opening act for several recording artists that have come to his area, namely Michelle Wright and John Conlee. With his new backup band named The Riders, his goals have come into focus, “Give the fans really good country music!” And that he does.
