Infinity may seem simple, just the absence of limits. But the closer we examine it, the more it unravels into paradox and mystery. Can some infinities be larger than others? How can an infinite hotel be fully booked yet still have room for more guests? In this episode of Multiverses, I'm joined by Adrian Moore, professor of philosophy at Oxford, to explore these questions. We dive into Hilbert's Hotel, Cantor's revolutionary work on transfinite numbers, and the philosophical and even theological implications of the absolute infinite—the place where maths itself seems to break down.Along the way, we ask: Is infinity something we can ever truly grasp? Or does it forever retreat beyond our understanding? If you like these topics, where science, maths give way to the unstable ground of philosophy ... subscribe!Adrian's academic homepageAdrian's book: The Infinite

When Wittgenstein published his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus in 1921, he claimed to have solved all philosophical problems. One problem that hasn't been solved though is how best to translate this notoriously difficult work. The expiry of the book's copyright in 2021 has brought three new English translations in less than a year, each grappling with the difficulties posed by a philosopher who frequently undermined his own use of language to demonstrate the limitations of what can be represented. Adrian Moore joins Malin Hay to discuss what Wittgenstein hoped to achieve with the only work he published in his lifetime and to consider how much we should trust his assertion that everything it contains is nonsensical.Find further reading and listening on the episode page: https://lrb.me/tractatuspod Hosted on Acast. She served in the Western Australian Police Force for 17 years until she retired on mental health grounds in 2023. Nicole was a victim of serial rapist Adrian Trevor Moore, who was found guilty in 2022 of assaulting 13 women. He was also a WA Police Officer. Nicole's position within WA police didn't mean her case was expedited or even that it was treated within the normal parameters of a sexual assault case. You see, because of Adrian Moore's position within WA Police, they decided to keep the investigation within their internal affairs department rather than send it to the well trained and experienced officers in the Sex Crimes squad. As a result, the case and the victims were grossly mishandled. 38 | Can We Understand Infinity? ~ Adrian Moore

On Humans

Infinity is a puzzling idea. Even young children are fascinated by its various manifestations: What is the biggest number? Does the universe have an edge? Does time have a beginning? Philosophers have tried to answer these questions since time immemorial. More recently, they have been joined by scientists and mathematicians. Indeed, a whole branch of mathematics has become dedicated to the study of infinity.  So what have we learned? Can we finally understand infinity? And what has this quest taught us about ourselves?  To explore this topic, I am joined by philosopher Adrian W. Moore.  Professor Moore is a special guest for two reasons. First, he is a world expert on infinity, known for an excellent BBC series, "History of the Infinite". More personally, he is the head tutor of Philosophy at St Hugh's College, Oxford, where I studied my BA in Philosophy and Psychology. It has now been ten years since Prof Moore interviewed me and, for whatever reason, accepted me as a student. I feel honoured to mark the occasion with this episode. In this episode, we discuss: (02:35) Why infinity fascinates (12:20) Greeks on infinity (20:05) A finite cosmos?  (25:00) Zeno's paradoxes (32:35) Answering Zeno (42:35) Measuring infinities? Georg Cantor (54:05) Infinity vs human understanding (66:20) Mystics on infinity As always, we finish with Prof Moore's reflections on humanity. LINKS Want to support the show? Coaching with Angela You're Better Than You Think You Areby Angela Cox Episode Highlights [02:57] The First Place Adrian Wants to Go to After Lockdown Depending on the time of the year, it would be skiing. If not, he'd like to travel and go to different places. He broke his ankle the year before when he was running. [04:52] Adrian's First Proudest Moment The first one is leaving Visual Security Group after ten years of working there and starting his own business with former colleagues. It did not push through, and he ended up with six months of garden leave. During his garden leave, he set goals that he wanted to do and wanted to achieve. He did mountaineering, learned how to skipper a boat, did life coaching, charity work, and supported local businesses. He was also able to spend a lot of time with his children and family. Adrian says that he took the garden leave as a gift to go further into many things. [06:39] The Mindset that Pushed Adrian He didn't want to waste the opportunity. He got to stay at home for six months while still having bills covered. Adrian read different magazines and looked at the fun things his friends have done. He wrote a list of what he wanted to do and planned them out month by month. Once he finished everything on the list, he felt like he was living his best life. [08:37] Doing a Life Coaching Course Adrian wanted to do something different when he went back to work. He wanted to go back with more experience and learnings. Doing live coaching allowed him to better support, coach, and mentor his team. [09:28] Adrian's Second Proudest Moment Children being born is one of the proudest moments. Adrian is a single dad to two girls, which he says is not an easy task. After leaving VSG, it struck him that he got to transition from work to his children's stability. During that transition chapter, he realised how much planning this stability of daily life takes. He did it with his daughters as a team, and he got them involved in what he's doing. He wants to be part of the mundane aspects of parenting and be involved with his children's school and everyday life. [15:31] Adrian's Third Proudest Moment His father ran hospitality-related businesses in the Lake District for 30 years before he passed. Starting to work for his dad at 11 years old influenced Adrian's mindset about business. Before his father passed, he asked Adrian to look after three things: his mum, his sister, one of the businesses he had. He says that it was a fantastic and proud moment. He sets up a call with his family as he promised his dad to keep them all going because they're all in different parts of the UK. Adrian joined the Army when he was 17. Then, he thought that his dad was disappointed in him because he didn't go into the family business. The knowledge he got from working in the restaurant at a young age set him up early. [20:00] Coping with Being Far Away from His Mum Because he's always been away since 17, he copes through phone calls. He's now used to it, but he still tries to pay a visit as much as he can. [22:03] The Adversities that Made Him Stronger One of the key things is around a business contract he worked on while he was in VSG. They lost a major contract that they've worked on for 18 months, leading to huge revenue loss. It was complete dead silence when he relayed the news to his team via conference call. But Adrian said that the exit of the contract needs to be just as professional as the entry. It wasn't anyone's fault; it was a business decision. He made sure to look after all the people involved during that tough time. He had to keep his morale in the right place for the team and think about what happened on his own time. Six weeks after his dad passed, his close colleague passed as well. Adrian suggests jotting down some of the things you really want to do regardless of when you'll do it. Look at the reasons why you can do it and what you'll get out of it. [32:20] Three Things that Put a Smile on His Face Being around people he loves. Getting out in the fresh air and exercising. Seeing other people happy. [33:07] The Ultimate Secret to Success Don't try and be great; be consistent in everything that you do. 5 Powerful Quotes [06:39] ‘I think it was just that I didn't want to waste the opportunity because how many people can say that they've got six months at home, they're still fortunate enough to be paid and all the bills are still covered and things' [12:24] ‘I want to be part of the actual, what I probably call the more mundane parts of parenting, in homework, the school life, and things as opposed to having all the great enjoyment of the weekends and things that most people in this position I suppose do' [13:47] ‘If you make your bed in the morning, you'll have accomplished a task first thing in the morning' [24:45] ‘There are uncontrollables. And sometimes those are the things that really stretch you—stretch your mindset, stretch your attitude—to how you operate in life' [30:57] ‘Don't look at the boundaries and the reasons why you can't; just think you can do it'   About Adrian Moore Adrian Moore is the Operations Director of Allied Universal® for the UK and Europe. They heard a warning that some efficiency measures could be complicated by poor data collection. You’ll hear legislative reaction to the efficiency report. Water infrastructure across North Carolina is aging and, in some cases, crumbling. But local regulations can lead to less choice and higher costs as pipes are upgraded. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled, 7-2, that the state of Colorado could not force a professional cake baker to design a cake for a same-sex wedding. But the ruling’s long-term impact is not as clear-cut as the result might imply. Jon Guze, John Locke Foundation director of legal studies, analyzes the Supreme Court’s decision in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.

Adrian Moore reaches the end of his journey through two and half millennia of philosophical thought about the infinite. In this final episode, he comes to the conclusion that his voyage through the worlds of philosophy, theology, mathematics and cosmology has in the end led him to ourselves and our place in the universe. With the help of writers and philosophers as diverse as Rene Descartes, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Iris Murdoch, Adrian returns to the theme of our finite nature and how that is fundamental to our sense of what is infinite. He considers the relation between the infinite and the transcendent and examines where the desire to look for something beyond ourselves belongs in a secular society. Throughout the series, Adrian and his cast of philosophers have made connections, performed calculations and looked up at the stars in their attempts to clarify what we mean by the infinite. But, his history tells us, it all comes back to us and how we relate to what surpasses our finite nature. A Juniper production first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2016.

In his series on thought about infinity through the centuries, Adrian Moore has considered the topic through the lenses of philosophy, theology and mathematics. Now, in this penultimate episode, the focus is firmly on us. Adrian ponders our finite nature and confronts the question of whether, if we could, we really would want to live for ever. He brings us the Czech composer Janacek's opera, with its eponymous heroine Elina Makropulos. Her father, the court physician, has procured an elixir of life for her but, far from making her eternally happy, her long life has become unbearably tedious. Some philosophers fully sympathise with Elina Makropulos and celebrate our finite nature. Others lament it. But as Adrian discovers, there is consensus on one point – the fact that one day our life will end doesn't rob it of meaning. Indeed, it is our very sense of our own finite nature, argues John Cottingham, Professor Emeritus at Reading University, that produces what St Augustine called ‘the restlessness of the human heart' - our constant desire to reach out for more. A Juniper production first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2016.

A History of the Infinite

Does space go on for ever? Are there infinitely many stars? These are some of the questions Adrian Moore explores in this episode in his series about philosophical thought concerning the infinite. With the help of the theories of the Ancient Greeks through to those of modern cosmologists, Adrian examines the central question of whether our universe is finite or infinite. For most of us, looking up at the stars gives us a sense of infinity but, as Adrian discovers, there is a strong body of opinion which suggests that space is finite, albeit unbounded. This is a difficult idea to grasp, but by inviting us to think of ourselves as ants, astrophysics professor Jo Dunkley attempts explain it. Adrian also tackles the idea of the expanding universe and the logic that leads cosmologists to argue that it all started with a big bang, and may all end with a big crunch. Finally, we discover from cosmologist John Barrow how the appearance of an infinity in scientists' calculations sends them straight back to the drawing board. The infinite, which the Ancient Greeks found so troubling, has lost none of its power to disturb. A Juniper production first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2016.

Adrian Moore's series on philosophical thought on infinity finds him mired in a near meltdown in mathematics. Adrian tells the story of the controversy caused by the work of the German mathematician, Georg Cantor, on the infinite. In a world of paradoxes, we meet the nun who can't decide whether to pray for herself. Her dilemma is beautifully explained by Marcus Giaquinto, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at UCL, in conversation with Adrian. And we find out how an associated paradox, first posed by one of the giants of 20th century philosophy, Bertrand Russell, devastated the career of another German mathematician and philosopher. The arguments of the early 20th century no longer plague modern mathematics in the way that they did. As Adrian explains however, by subjecting the infinite to formal scrutiny, mathematicians have ended up confronting puzzles at the very heart of their discipline. Adrian Moore continues his exploration of two and a half millennia of philosophical thought on infinity. His work was revolutionary but, as Adrian discovers, it greatly polarised opinion amongst his late 19th and early 20th century contemporaries - and we hear how Cantor himself suffered a complete breakdown in his mental health. As Adrian takes us with him deep into the world of infinite set theory, he enlists the help of Mary Leng, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at York University, and four very familiar twentieth century friends. Having looked at the infinite in philosophical and theological terms, it's time to view it through the lens of mathematics. In the fifth programme in his series, Adrian Moore introduces us to the pivotal role mathematics has played in the quest to understand the infinite. He begins by enlisting the help of very modern technology and considering the real question put by an 11 year old boy - what is zero divided by zero? That's the trigger for Adrian's investigation of the calculus – the tool we use to reckon with very small quantities. It plays a huge part in many aspects of modern-day design, medicine and statistical work, but what is less well-known is the seventeenth century row between two eminent scientists as to who actually invented it. Adrian meets science writer, Brian Clegg, to find out about the race to claim credit. It didn't just cause a storm at its inception - we hear about the disagreements that dogged the calculus's early days, with the church too getting involved in the disputes about the infinitely small. But as Adrian discovers, the quest to understand the infinite has left us with a branch of mathematics of unparalleled importance. Adrian Moore brings us to the verge of the modern world and the way we think now. He leaves the arguments of the medieval church and renaissance thinkers behind and steps into the world of enlightenment philosophy, as heralded by Rene Descartes. Adrian tells us that Descartes was a typical enlightenment philosopher, seeking to establish what understanding we can have of the infinite using our own finite intellectual resources. How can we have any sense of infinity, if we have no direct experience of it? Adrian describes Descartes' attempts to establish a secure foundation for his beliefs, beginning with his questioning of his own existence and then of the existence of God. We also meet the British empiricists who took issue with Descartes, and finally Immanuel Kant, who believed that each human being is of infinite worth. In the second part of his journey through two and half millennia of philosophical thought, Adrian Moore introduces us to the Greek philosopher, Aristotle, who attempted a reconciliation between the idea of things going on for ever and ever and the Greeks' abhorrence of the very notion. We hear how he came up with the idea of two different types of infinite - the potential and the actual - and how it was the potential infinite that he presented as the acceptable face of infinity. With the help of Ursula Coope, Professor of Ancient Philosophy at Oxford University, Adrian explains the idea of infinite divisibility and re-visits the paradoxes of Zeno which suggest that motion isn't possible. He carries out his own experiment to see whether using Aristotle's theory of the infinite he can disprove Zeno's conclusions and actually get himself home. And he reveals how Aristotle's theory of the infinite held sway for thousands of years, despite the challenges to it. A Juniper production first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2016.

Adrian Moore reaches the third stage of his journey through thought about infinity, describing how the church attempted to stamp its authority on the debate and how that led to some explosive disagreements amongst medieval thinkers. With the help of Cecilia Trifogli, Lecturer in Medieval Philosophy at Oxford University, Adrian finds out about the life of St Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas defied his mother to become a Dominican friar – she had hoped for a career in the more prestigious Benedictine order for him – and, more importantly, he attempted to engineer a reconciliation between the theories of Aristotle on the infinite and the doctrines of the Catholic church. He was successful up to a point and, once the church had embraced Aristotle's teachings as the new orthodoxy, philosophers stepped out of line at their peril. The famous dissenter and innovator, Galilei Galileo, did just that. He dared to add his contradictory views to the debate and introduced a series of paradoxes which foreshadowed much later thinking on infinity. Adrian presents us with a vivid picture of the clash between theology and Greek philosophy, and a sense of the ongoing struggle of both to understand the infinite. Adrian Moore starts his journey through philosophical thought on infinity over the last two and a half thousand years. In the first episode, he finds out why the idea made the Greeks so uncomfortable and introduces us to some of the first great thinkers on infinity. We meet Pythagoras and his followers who divided the world into two fundamental cosmic principles. On one side was everything they thought of as limited or finite, and therefore good, and on the other everything they considered unlimited or infinite, and therefore bad. The Pythagoreans thought they could explain the world around them in terms of the numbers - 1, 2, 3, 4, etc - which we use to count finite collections of things, and they were utterly dismayed when they discovered that not every calculation produced the neat answer they expected. According to legend, one of their number was shipwrecked at sea for revealing this discovery to their enemies! And we meet Zeno of Elea who, after wrestling with the notion of infinity, came to the conclusion that movement itself was impossible. Zócalo Public Square
Does Rail Have a Future?

Zócalo Public Square

Before travel shifted to the highways and the skies, the railroad connected Americans and developed the country. Trains built the Eastern seaboard cities, connected the distant coasts, populated and glamorized the West, determined the outcomes of wars, and, when regulated and subsidized, shaped our ideas of government and economy. Today, barring some commuter rails and urban subways, trains are underutilized across the country, particularly in California, where discount airlines are cheaper and faster, and cars run everywhere on any schedule. But with the promise of high-speed train technology to connect California, buzz about L.A.’s subway to the sea, ever-more crowded roads, and federal and state governments ready to fund job-generating infrastructure projects, rail seems ready for a comeback. Is rail the future of transit, or is it a waste of resources? Zócalo invites a panel of experts — including KCET’s Val Zavala, L.A. County Metropolitan Transit Authority Board Member Richard Katz, Gloria Ohland of Reconnecting America and Adrian Moore of the Reason Foundation — to consider the rise, fall, and potential return of rail.
