Adrien Paczosa believes that dietetic care with a health at every size approach should be accessible and affordable nationwide. Thanks to her vision, she founded Nourish, a virtual-first nutrition group with affordable access to nutrition care. On the podcast, we talked about how focusing on body weight only creates harmful weight cycling, how every diet and diet book should have a warning that weight cycling is harmful to your health, and why everyone should be offered the option to define health for themselves because it's a personal definition. The Plant Centered and Thriving Podcast: Plant-Based Inspiration
"Diet culture is this pervasive belief that your body shape is more important than your physical physical and psychological well being"As a Registered Dietitian, intuitive eating is a huge part of my practice. This goes against the grain of what's been popular in society. Noom, Weight Watchers, Keto, SlimFast, billions of dollars gets thrown into diets. Diets and marketing that tell us, if we are smaller, we are better. If we are smaller, we are beautiful. It is part of my legacy, that I help my clients and my audience to realize how dangerous these beliefs about weight can be. I have brought Adrien, another experienced RD, to help me unpack diet culture and discuss why our mental and physical health is at risk. Adrien Paczosa is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian practicing in Austin, Texas, and the surrounding counties. She is the founder of I Live Well Nutrition as well as being the founder of Fearless Practitioners, the division of her business that offers training to dietitians and wellness professionals. Adrien began her path towards nutrition by falling down. She has been dancing since age 2 and in college was a Kilgore College Rangerette. During practice she took a fall and broke her foot, and that sparked the ideas of needing a new direction in her life. After graduating in 2003 from the University of Illinois – Chicago with a bachelor of science degree in Human Nutrition, Adrien began her career as a staff dietitian at a hospital in downtown Chicago. She was promoted to the hospital’s Director of Food Service and Nutrition and was responsible for all food preparation as well as patient nutritional care. While working at her clinical job, Adrien maintained her passion for movement by working as a personal trainer and nutrition coach in downtown Chicago. In 2006, Adrien returned to Texas to be close to family, friends, and warmer weather! She opened her private practice, I Live Well Nutritional Therapy in 2007 to Create better access to dietitians. Becoming a board member and now the current chair-elect of Behavioral Health Nutrition (BHN) Dietetic Practice group has been a gift and honor to Adrien, and she continues to believe and strive to hold the bar set by BHN members to the highest degree of professional expectations.

On this week's Mental Note I am sharing with you an interview that I recently did with Adrien Paczosa on her show Fearless Practitioners. I wanted to share this conversation with you because in it, I share more about the inspiration behind this podcast and why I am passionate about being an advocate for black and brown females, especially in regards to their mental health. I also talk about my non-profit Glass Seats and how I was inspired to create it based off of my experience in corporate America. Before becoming a therapist, I spent twenty years in another field, and through that experience I have become passionate about helping young women who may feel limited in the opportunities available to them. Adrien also asked me about how I am able to balance so many things and still manage to oversee a successful mental health practice. We talk about the importance of self care, how I utilize something called the "power hour", and why I personally schedule in naps! Another important piece to this conversation is when we talked about asking yourself the question "who am I" and being able to answer that honestly. In order to find the courage to do the things we feel called to do, it requires that we take a deep look inwards and come face to face with who we really see ourselves as. This is a powerful conversation for those who are wanting to step out of their comfort zones, take more action, and lean into who they know they are on the inside. Episode's Key Points: Perfectionistic tendencies can make embracing a more flexible way of eating, such as intuitive eating, a difficult adjustment. Part of the intuitive eating process is craving foods that have previously been off-limits... these foods tend to be fun foods, such as french fries or cookies! Eventually food will feel calm, fun, and not as exciting. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!! Adrien Paczosa of iLiveWell Nutrition Therapy to talk about perfectionism and intuitive eating. Mom's don't get enough credit!! There's no good/bad or right/wrong way to do intuitive eating or recovery. Social media can trap us into the idea of needing to be perfect. It takes time to understand intuitive eating, and to really understand the process including our own hunger and fullness cues. There is always so much extra noise getting in the way from diet culture... so the first step really is to shut all that stuff out! We need to gives ourselves PERMISSION not to be perfect, and understand that sometimes intuitive eating can feel really great, or not so great. That's just a part of the experience! Cravings come in all shapes and sizes, fun foods and "healthy" foods. We can't judge either kind of craving, and we must grant ourselves permission for both. Sometimes permission can make you feel out of control, especially when we're first starting out. This is when an eating disorder or intuitive eating dietitian can come in handy, as they can help guide you through all the twists and turns. Everything is an EXPERIMENT!! Adrien and I talk about the importance of learning about private practice as dietitians exploring a non-diet approach. YOU'RE NOT DOING IT WRONG!
