Starting and running a private practice is a journey filled with challenges, growth opportunities, and the potential for both professional and personal fulfillment. Gordon Brewer, a seasoned mental health professional and founder of The Practice of Therapy, reflects on his journey into private practice, sharing insights that are both inspiring and practical for current and aspiring private practitioners. The Journey to Autonomy Gordon began his private practice journey in 2006 after gaining extensive experience working in nonprofit agencies. While he credits his nonprofit work for providing invaluable clinical training, he found himself drawn to private practice for its autonomy and financial potential. Transitioning to full-time private practice in 2010 marked a pivotal moment in his career, one that required him to embrace the challenges and opportunities of running his own business. Mindset Matters: Developing a Business Perspective A recurring theme in Gordon's advice is the importance of adopting a business mindset. To thrive in private practice, clinicians must view their work not just as a therapeutic endeavor but as a business venture. This includes understanding: Return on Investment (ROI): Assessing where to invest time and money to maximize success. Profitability: Ensuring income exceeds expenses to sustain and grow the practice. Systems and Processes: Establishing efficient workflows to optimize operations. “Clarity around your ‘why' is essential,” Gordon emphasizes. For many, the “why” includes achieving autonomy, earning more, and escaping the bureaucracy of agency work. Don't miss Gordon's invaluable advice on starting and scaling a private practice, overcoming challenges, and building a supportive network. Tune in now to take your practice to the next level!
In this episode of The Practice of Therapy podcast, host Gordon Brewer talks with Nicole McCance, who shares her insights on scaling a therapy practice through effective systems and strategic hiring. Nicole emphasizes the importance of systemizing processes before bringing new hires on board, helping therapists avoid the overwhelm of constant questions and task management. She reveals that many therapists dive into hiring without setting up essential workflows, which can quickly turn them into “chief question answerers” rather than effective leaders. Nicole discusses the power of documenting every step of your practice in a Google Doc, which not only streamlines daily operations but also fosters team independence and enables automation. Reflecting on her own journey, she explains how hiring a business coach early on was instrumental to her success, giving her the clarity and direction to create her own coaching program, where she now teaches therapists the systems and marketing strategies that fueled her rapid growth. From crafting SOP manuals with tools like Loom and ChatGPT to making your first hire a “mini-me” who mirrors your style, Nicole shares a practical and empowering guide for therapists ready to grow their practice with intention and efficiency. In this episode of the Soul Care for Therapists podcast, Dawn Gabriel welcomes Gordon Brewer, MEd, LMFT, to discuss the topic of hiking as a spiritual practice. As they delve into the profound connection between nature and spirituality, they explore the transformative power of hiking and the ways it can enhance one's spiritual journey. Gordon Brewer's Background Gordon Brewer, the host of "The Practice of Therapy" podcast and the founder of Kingsport Counseling Associates, shares his extensive experience in the world of therapy and private practice. He discusses his passion for podcasting, as well as his love for the Appalachian Mountains, where he often embarks on hiking adventures that provide him with solace and inspiration. The Connection Between Spirituality and Hiking Gordon explains that his daily practice involves spending time on the “Green Belt”, a picturesque trail system near his home. While this may not be classified as rigorous hiking, it serves as an opportunity for reflection, meditation, and prayer. Gordon Brewer: "Being in nature gives us a whole new reference point to bring some peace, bring some comfort, and to feel connected."The natural surroundings and the act of being in nature positively influence his spiritual well-being, offering a sense of cleansing and meaning. Gordon also highlights the intriguing concept of mystery that comes with hiking, as each bend in the trail presents an element of anticipation and discovery. Benefits of Hiking as a Spiritual Practice Dawn and Gordon delve into the myriad of benefits that hiking as a spiritual practice can bring. They emphasize how hiking, whether done alone or in the company of others, creates a space for deep connections, transformative conversations, and a profound sense of accomplishment. The physical exertion involved in hiking also serves as a natural intervention for depression, as it helps reorient the mind and stimulates different thought processes. Dawn Gabriel: "It's like connecting to something bigger than yourself, this felt sense of community in a spiritual way." Additionally, the practice of focusing on one's surroundings and engaging all the senses cultivates mindfulness and fosters a greater appreciation for the beauty and interconnectedness of the natural world. Tips for Implementing a Spiritual Practice of Hiking Gordon Brewer: "Spirituality is paying attention to the stuff we don't normally notice, connecting to the greater than in some way." To incorporate hiking as a spiritual practice, Gordon suggests integrating various elements that align with one's faith or personal beliefs. For example, listening to spiritually enriching podcasts or instrumental music while hiking can offer a meditative experience. Gordon also mentions the importance of grounding exercises, such as paying attention to breathing, muscle tension, and the sensory experiences of temperature, smells, and visual details. The act of being intentional about noticing and appreciating these aspects of nature allows for a deeper connection with the divine and a broader sense of spiritual presence. Conclusion As the conversation draws to a close, Dawn and Gordon express their shared belief in the healing power of nature and the need to move beyond the confines of technology and work-centric routines. They encourage listeners to embrace the practice of hiking as a spiritual journey, allowing it to bring about a shift in perspective and an opportunity for personal growth. By opening oneself to the mysteries of nature, exploring the present moment, and engaging in spiritual practices such as reflection, meditation, and prayer, hikers can discover a meaningful connection with both themselves and the greater spiritual realm. The lack of control emerges as a central theme as the duo reflects on the unsettling reality of relinquishing authority during difficult times. In a world where entrepreneurs thrive on decision-making and action, this loss of control can trigger anxiety and stress, further complicating the journey through adversity. In this episode of The Private Practice Elevation Podcast, you're going to get a glimpse into the various stages over the lifespan of a growing private practice. Many therapists start out as solo practitioners, building a private practice around one-on-one client work. Over time, they may find themselves full of clients - so much so that they have to start a waiting list or refer new clients to other therapists outside of their practice. So they shift their focus to hiring associates and start building their group practice and continue growing. But there's actually more than one way to scale a private practice. And with the rise of online therapy and the ability to reach more people nationwide, opportunities are increasing! So, today we're chatting with seasoned entrepreneur and private practice owner Gordon Brewer all about the path he's taken over the life of his private practice. Thinking about the next 5 years and nearing retirement, Gordon has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to scaling a private practice so that it serves his clients and aligns with his life values. So pull up a chair as I chat with my friend, Gordon, as he takes behind the scenes and tells the story of his own growth and scaling a private practice. In This Episode, You'll Learn: The different stages you can go through on your way to scaling your private practice from solo practice to group practice and beyond Some of the challenges and opportunities at each stage for increasing your profits and growing your business Understanding your “why” so that you can create a business that aligns with your values and life The importance of creating a great website for your private practice and how that can impact your growth Tips for naming your private practice and how that can impact your marketing and success Why you should be outsourcing in your private practice, some of the tasks you can begin outsourcing, and some of the ways to find people to outsource tasks to This Episode Is Brought To You By Subscribe & Review in Apple Podcasts If you're not yet subscribed to the podcast I want to encourage you to do that today. Margarita Khosh joins for a lively and fun conversation. We talked about expanding your niche beyond state lines; it's time that you become available to more clients than you could have ever imagined! Plus, Margarita gives us the scoop on navigating regulatory compliance, licensing regulations, and the importance of niche branding to reach underserved and underrepresented communities. Lastly, we chat about how Covid and 2020 had a massive impact on getting telehealth to become universally accepted and finally lowering the stigma around mental health. Meet Margarita Khosh Margarita Khosh, MBA, LSSGB, GHAC, is a healthcare industry implementation consultant who works with health care professionals to strengthen the patient-provider relationship. Leveraging her 20-year healthcare operational experience, international training, Healthcare MBA, fluency in insurance terminology, licensing, and regulatory compliance, she launched MK Medical Solutions, LLC to shift the mindset of providers and health systems to understand that the patient is a consumer. Through this lens, and motivated by overcoming trauma and burnout, she propels the implementation of a modern patient-centric experience that funnels to benefit all healthcare stakeholders by reducing cost, decreasing burnout, and contributing to a health system that works for all. Margarita serves on the Board of Directors of Women's Healthcare Executive Network of South Florida and teaches a Facebook community of 12K therapists while interviewing industry-leading authors. She has been featured on Sabrina Runbeck's Powerful and Passionate Healthcare Professionals, The Mighty Pete Lonton's Fire In The Belly, The B2B Podcast by The App Guys, The Practice Of Therapy Podcast with Gordon Brewer, and Coming Out Loved and Supported Podcast. She is also a contributing author and columnist. In a recently cited article at awarenow, she spoke about the importance of leveraging technology to make the health system work better for everyone. Covid's Impact On Telehealth Before Covid, therapists were not leveraging technology the way that other industries leverage technology. When Covid happens, all of a sudden, it helped therapists propel the adoption of technology in a way that we never imagined. The entire healthcare industry has been turned upside down (for the better)! During this time, Margarita learned everything that she needed to know about how the new policies, rules, and regulations worked. So, she started helping therapists launch private practices beyond state lines. Plus, she can inform therapists on how to utilize the executive orders and treat patients. 2020 and 2021 are all about helping therapists expand their practice beyond state lines for Margarita. It is a total game-changer for both therapists and clients. Plus, it's helping lift the stigma that people have around mental health issues. Covid has been extremely stressful, and we are lucky to help patients in the virtual world. Why You Should Get Licensed In Another State It has been exciting for many therapists - you can get licensed in another state and grow your practice. There is value in niche branding and lived experience. When you expand your practice beyond state lines, think about how that will impact a population that has traditionally had a different viewpoint on therapy. So, this is how you heal even more people. With telehealth, we can bring therapy to people regardless of where they are. Sadly, there is stigma and shame associated with mental health in specific communities; nobody will talk about it the importance of therapy. That's why it will be critical to get your practice across state lines. How Licensing Works In Other States There are resources out there to empower therapists to understand how licensing works in different states. Therapists might not be aware of specific questions they need to ask, especially given the executive orders. Margarita will help clinicians figure out interstate licensing. She has all of the resources for a therapist to do it themselves. Her goal is to empower and educate professionals to make educated decisions and understand the process themselves. If someone doesn't have time to make it work, then Margarita will offer additional support. She understands which questions to ask to get to the bottom line and move the process along. Florida Telehealth Registration There are certain states that therapists can explore in terms of getting to take their practice to where they don't need to become credentialed fully. If you would like to start seeing patients in Florida, there is a Florida Telehealth Registration. It is not a licensing, it's a registration. Simply put, it allows you to be registered in the state of Florida to treat patients, and it had nothing to do with the executive order because it's been in place for two years now. So it means that you can solicit patients in Florida that are not your patients, and you could practice there. It only takes a couple of days. Plus, the registration is free. To complete the registration application, click the link labeled "Documents" at the bottom of the homepage HERE. Why and how do clinicians start and sustain a private practice, when so many others fail at it? Too few resources and opportunities to financially succeed and stay in business. Private practice is not for everyone.Today’s guest is Gordon Brewer, a licensed marriage and family therapist. He started a part-time private practice in 2005 that has grown into a group practice named Kingsport Counseling Associates in northeast Tennessee.Click here to download our handout for this episode!Episode Highlights:Listen and Learn: When resources are limited, find or make your ownPractice of Therapy: Blog and podcast purpose is to help people start private practiceBiggest Mistakes: Know your numbers and charge enough to understand profit and lossMoney Mindset: Therapists should not feel ashamed or guilty about making moneyTop vs. Bottom Line Bookkeeping: Don’t procrastinate or outsource to avoid huge tax billReserves: Prepare and plan ahead by having 2-6 months of income saved for expensesStartup Expenses: Avoid debt and make the practice pay for itself from the beginningBootstrapping: Spend money to make money because doing it all is not a good ROIOutsource Opportunities: What is not your area of genius?Administrative/clerical workWebsite developmentSocial media marketingBookkeeping/accountingContractors vs. Clinicians: Don’t pay first hire too much but a fair, competitive wageFinancial Advice: Focus on percentages over dollar amounts and know your ‘why’Links and Resources:Money Matters in Private Practice Course(Coupon Code: Julie2020 for 20% off)Practice of Therapy BlogPractice of Therapy PodcastFree Private Practice Start-up Guide from Gordon Brewer Kingsport Counseling AssociatesQuickBooksSchedule K-1 Form 1065Schedule CAffordable Care Act (ACA) InsuranceFree to Focus from Michael HyattHealth Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)Profit First by Mike MichalowiczCompany of One by Paul JarvisGoogle G SuiteGreenOak AccountingTherapy For Your Money Podcast
The Frothy Rogue Nation Episode. The major issues, virus, law-breaking and power grabs by the Tories etc., facing us all this week, were largely missed by Andrew Marr and Gordon Brewer. Gordon, with a bout of ‘chlorinated chicken’ Tourettes faced Steven Barclay, the nominated Government ‘blocker’ for Scotland, but got nowhere. We mostly reviewed 2 important essays on the state of ‘Rogue UK’ by Gerry Hassan and Peter A Bell and then a London Times article by Alex Massie.(It’s frothy man!). The BBC excuse for silencing the First Minister was delivered by a slimy guy called Ian Small. We show the clip with John Beattie on The NINE. Finally some good news. Ewan McGregor now supports independence and we close with a clip which ends well.
Welcome to A Counselors Journey To Private Practice. I'm your host, Juan. This episode is all about going From $0 to $50,000 in private practice. Here are some tips that will get you there smoothly:Call People - reach out to your community. Call all counselor's in your area and let them know that you're starting a private practice. Break bread and get coffee with those counselors. That way, you can have some referrals moving forward.Get Business Cards - Make sure you put a picture of yourself on the business card. That way, your client will know what you look like, and it can build an emotional connection. Work With An Accountant - Get a separate bank account. Your business finances should not be mixed in with your personal finances. It may be beneficial to work with an accountant right away. That way, you do not miss essential deadlines like tax season! Sublease An Office - Rent a space for $20 an hour instead of forking over thousands of dollars each month on office space. Subleasing is a significant way to cut overhead costs and keep your expenses low when you're just starting out in private practice. Start Part-Time - Instead of diving into private practice, start part-time so you still have your full-time income to rely on. Once you get enough clients under your belt, it will be easier to leave your full-time gig behind. Build A Website - Your website is your brand; make sure it is consistent. Sometimes, you need to spend money to earn money, so it may be more efficient to pay upfront rather than learn all the tech skills. SEO - This is how your clients will find you. If you have keywords around your services, clients will be able to find you easier. One way you can do this is by writing blog posts.Plus, Gordon gives tips on marketing your private practice: ROI is much more important than figuring out a percentage. If you're going to spend $1,000 on advertising, you want to know that you're making a profit on that. If you spend $1,000 and it brings you twenty more clients, that will definitely be a good return on investment because you'll make money in the long-run. Think about what you spend on marketing and how you're making money in return. Are you interested in receiving help with your counseling business?CLICK HEREThank you for listening. Please leave an awesome review and subscribe to the podcast so that you never miss an episode in your journey of private practice.I'm always looking for awesome counselors that are ready to share their story. Featured today;… The Covid press briefing and then the Gordon Brewer show starring Finance Secretary Kate Forbes. No deaths, 30,000 tests comleted yesterday, 80% success in contact tracing and quarantine compliance, Daily Heil skelped, TES skelped and a satisfied FM. GERS dominated the Brewer show and Kate Forbes sorted out Peter McMahon from ITV. “GERS is a picture of Scotland IN THE UK not an iScotland” Douglas Fraser unusually was sitting on the indy fence and even Brewer interrupted the Unionist MSPs bawling “Too wee, too poor” Lesley Riddoch suggested that post Brexit day, Hogmany 2020, Scotland could be a target for seduction. The EU, EFTA and the UK all bidding for an iScotland to join their club. “Lionel Messi is going to HIBS” says Andy Murray.
In today's self care podcast episode, I have the opportunity to talk with Gordon Brewer, LMFT. Throughout the podcast, you will hear an honest and genuine conversation around support, grief, and self care rituals. In this episode, Gordon mentions a few resources that can be helpful related to grief and private practice building. I hope you enjoy and if you're interested in taking a look at your own self care, and would like a free guide to help you, please go to my website: www.selfcaretodaytomorrow.com to sign up for a free self care guide.
That was wide ranging today... Gordon Brewer featured; on tests, skelped by Jeanne Freeman, on border quarantine, skelped by Stewart and ridiculed by all for producing another party political broadcast for Jackson Carlaw. New promising poll figures from PanelBase in the Sunday Times had a 99 point confidence gap between FM Sturgeon & PM Johnson. Independence was also solid at 54% and got approval. The International Covid comparisons were illuminating. Jason McCann says it's not a journey but a siege to break that’s how to gain independence. Finally hopes and fears for the immediate future for Scotland and the UK and our expectations fired us off into an excellent low key rammie. (always popular).

Gordon Brewer in conversation with Tony Blair's former Chief of Staff, Jonathan Powell.
Jimmy, Norrie and Stewart discuss Stuart Cosgrove’s article in the National Danni Garavelli's article in the Scotland on Sunday and Gordon Brewer’s performance on Sundays Scottish political show.
John Clarke joins the show; he helps private practice owners build a practice that they love. In this episode, John gives tips on how to do private practice made human. First, start with your “why”. Why are you considering private practice, or why did you get into private practice in the first place? Later, John gives more tips on establishing your endpoint, creating company values, and knowing your ideal income. Meet John Clarke John Clarke is a licensed psychotherapist and a private practice expert at PrivatePracticeWorkshop. After learning a lot of things the hard way while building his first practice in San Francisco, he started a blog to share with others the lessons he had learned. Private Practice Workshop was born, and this blog eventually evolved into so much more: a thriving Facebook community, a successful podcast, online courses, and coaching/consulting. Some therapists want to learn how to use digital marketing to grow their audience and get more clients, but the majority just want to leave it to the pros. John founded Unconditional Media, the digital marketing team for therapists, to meet the biggest need of private practitioners: getting more clients! When he's not nerding out over all things private practice, he's playing jazz drums, practicing Muay Thai martial arts, and talking to his pets like they're humans. Having Fuel in the Tank Start with your why. You are crafting your purpose statement. Why do any of this in the first place? Why does this matter? Knowing your why will be your fuel source. So especially on days where it's tough to get out of bed in the morning like in a crisis, you need enough fuel in the tank to make this worth it. There are more risks associated with being a business owner than being an employee. There are more risks; there's more stress. You are going to take work home more often; you're liable to different things that you're not as responsible for if you're the employee of a company. So for John, it has to be worth that. The bumps in the road have to be worth it. Why Private Practice? Many therapists feel like they were born to do this. They were born to help people. Take that one step further and write down why private practice? If your purpose in life is to help people, then why private practice? It's not the most effective place for you to help people. Do you have other ideas behind your purpose? Whether it's owning your schedule or increasing income. Try to get honest with yourself. Establish Your Endpoint The endpoint is a mission statement. You should think big! You should think of the ripple effects of your work. Your mission statement is this high-level impact that your business could have on the world. Start to sketch out how are you going to get there? If you don't know where you're going, than any place will do—reverse engineer your big tasks. So if you want to get 50 fully booked students in this launch, you can start to work backward and go, then what do you need to do in these next one to three months to build your email list for that? What do you need to do this week to create more lead magnets to make your email list? So it helps if you trace back what actions you are taking today and what they should lead to. Establish Company Values Establishing your company values will help you make decisions. Even if you're a solo practitioner, John highly recommends doing this. Create the kind of practice that you want to have for yourself. Put some thought into that and get out a piece of paper to write stuff down. When we write, we get clarity and can see the big picture. Set Your Ideal Income and Ideal Schedule Get in there, create that income target and make it sure it's based on something. What are you going to need to get that money, and how are you going to use it? Then, you can reverse engineer that around your schedule. If you want to make a certain amount, how many hours will you have to work to get there? What kind of schedule do you need? Start sketching out your days, weeks, months, and years and make sure when you look at your calendar that it seems right to you. It looks good. It looks like, yes, this is worth it. In this episode of the Private Practice Elevation podcast, you’re going to learn all you need to know about using G Suite in a private practice. When building a therapy practice, it’s important to have the right tools to help you create systems and be organized within your business. This helps keep you focused and not inventing the wheel every time you get a new client, need to send a form or perform other repetitive tasks in your business. The trouble is that practice organization software can be expensive, especially if your private practice is in the early stages of existence. G Suite (Googles suite of tools) can be an excellent way to get started with systems in your business. They offer a huge range of applications and tools you can use to make your therapy life much easier. Most people think that using Google services for their private practice will not be HIPAA compliant, but as our special guest explains, that’s not the case. Gordon Brewer, Jr., MEd, LMFT is a licensed marital and family therapist and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Gordon is the person behind The Practice of Therapy Podcast and Blog. At The Practice of Therapy, Gordon provides information and resources for clinicians starting, growing or scaling private practices. Gordon has personally built his own private practice while relying heavily on G Suite in order to get it all done. He knows the ins and outs of G Suite tools and, as you’ll hear in the interview, he loves to teach everything he knows. So if you’re looking for the technical tools you need to run your practice, without breaking the bank, listen in to my conversation with Gordon. In This Episode, You’ll Learn: How to set up an office management system within Google Suite to run your practice on about 5 bucks a month Using Gmail while still having an email address at your website’s domain What you need in order to make Google Suite and Gmail HIPAA compliant so that you can use it in your therapy practice

In this episode, Gordon talks again with Jane Carter, LPC about finding your “Superpowers” and priorities in private practice. Jane and Gordon share how their mindsets have shifted over time and how it has changed the focus of their practices. Jane also shares how getting some business coaching changed her practice and helped her to grow exponentially. She also shares how she made the shift to doing more coaching rather than traditional therapy in her practice. They also talk about being able to embrace change and taking some risks. And, at the same time, being genuine to yourself and knowing your gifts. Meet Jane Carter Jane Carter, LPC is a counselor and business coach from Asheville, NC. Jane has spent the last several years in private practice as a counselor and has recently begun focusing more on business coaching, not only for therapists but other businesses as well. Her website is: JaneCarterCoaching.com Jane says, “As a therapist, business coach, and life coach, I love helping people navigate the path to achieving their goals for a meaningful life. I apply these principles in my own life in the mountains of Asheville, NC, where I'm an outdoors woman, world-traveler, dog-mama, food-and-wine lover, reader, and coffee-shop connoisseur. (I'm also known for making up great puns on the fly).” First Pancakes Jane talks about how she has tried a few things that really have not worked so well for her as a counselor and a business coach. She refers to these as “first pancakes”. If you have ever cooked pancakes, the first ones you try to make never turn out that good. But you have to make that first one for the rest to be perfect. Our private practices are the same way. How you start out is probably not going to be at all like you end up. There will be a huge learning curve and you will experience some failures along the way. But you have to always make the first pancake… Finding Your Superpowers Your “superpowers” are your gifts and talents as a person. Superpowers are also found in what you are passionate about. Finding your superpowers means being able to discover what you do better than anything else. And when you do those things, you can do them almost effortlessly. To find your superpowers it is important get feedback from others to know what they see in you that you might not have really noticed before. This is where coaching and finding a mentor can help so very much. Another way to think about “superpowers” is really to think about what your strengths might be. By understanding and knowing yourself well, you can be more genuine and authentic with people. In many ways, it is what we help our clients with day in and day out. We help them find their strengths and gifts to help them thrive in life. When we know our own “superpowers”, we are better able to live into how we can best help people. It makes us more authentic and genuine with what we do. People will notice that and be drawn to it. Using Your Superpowers To Market Your Practice One of the keys things to remember about marketing is that people are drawn to what is genuine. In many ways, it is all about helping people discover how you can help them in their lives. It's putting yourself in front of others and sharing with them how your superpowers can help them transform their lives. Building the Long Game The other thing to remember about growing a private practice, or any business for that matter, is to think about the “long game”. “Get rich quick” rarely works. But by being able to think long-term and be content with steady growth, we are usually much more satisfied and content. Sharing your superpowers as a clinician, people will notice it as being genuine and authentic. Ultimately, being able to know yourself well and discover your true strengths and abilities will help you be much more successful. It is where our superpowers live. By embracing our superpowers, we become much more effective as clinicians and human beings in general.
