Roberts, and his clerk, for failing to file his motion to lift the restraining order (gag order) that prevents Sibley from releasing her records.[9][10]Sibley then requested that the U.S. Supreme Court release him from the lower court's restraining order, stating: "To be clear, if Sibley is not allowed to file his Motion to Modify the Restraining Order and thereafter does not promptly receive a fair and impartial hearing on that Motion, he will justifiably consider the Restraining Order void as a result of being denied such a hearing by the District Court, the D.C. Circuit Court and now this Court."[11][12]The U.S. Supreme Court denied Sibley's application.[13][14][15][16][17][18]Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Another push for the Government to cut its losses with its revamped school lunches. The Libelle Group - which is contracted to deliver about 125-thousand meals each day - is in liquidation. The responsibility will now fall solely on Compass Group -- but Minister in Charge David Seymour says that won't impact lunch deliveries. Rotorua's Kaitao Intermediate School Principal, Phil Palfrey told Andrew Dickens he has little faith it won't create further issues. He wishes the Government could return to the original programme -- and believes the country can afford to do so. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We haven't had the opening ceremony, but we already have a swim controversy. Dolphins coach Michael Palfrey has been revealed to be working with South Korean swimmer Kim Woo-Min, who will clash with Australians Elijah Winnington and Sam Short on the opening day of the competition. In an interview with South Korean media it's understood he said "I really hope he can win". Palfrey is working with Zac Incerti, Abbey Connor and Alex Perkins in Paris. The Australian Olympic Committee has described it as a "serious error of judgement" and is investigating. Tom Decent joins us to explain what comes next. In this episode, Chris Gondek interviews author John Palfrey about how diversity and free expression can coexist on a modern campus. Safe spaces, trigger warnings, microaggressions, the disinvitation of speakers, demands to rename campus landmarks—debate over these issues began in lecture halls and on college quads but ended up on op-ed pages in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, on cable news, and on social media. Some of these critiques had merit, but others took a series of cheap shots at “crybullies” who needed to be coddled and protected from the real world. Few questioned the assumption that colleges must choose between free expression and diversity. In Safe Spaces, Brave Spaces, John Palfrey argues that the essential democratic values of diversity and free expression can, and should, coexist on campus. Palfrey, currently Head of School at Phillips Academy, Andover, and formerly Professor and Vice Dean at Harvard Law School, writes that free expression and diversity are more compatible than opposed. Free expression can serve everyone—even if it has at times been dominated by white, male, Christian, heterosexual, able-bodied citizens. Diversity is about self-expression, learning from one another, and working together across differences; it can encompass academic freedom without condoning hate speech. Palfrey proposes an innovative way to support both diversity and free expression on campus: creating safe spaces and brave spaces. In safe spaces, students can explore ideas and express themselves with without feeling marginalized. In brave spaces—classrooms, lecture halls, public forums—the search for knowledge is paramount, even if some discussions may make certain students uncomfortable. The strength of our democracy, says Palfrey, depends on a commitment to upholding both diversity and free expression, especially when it is hardest to do so. Learn more about your ad choices. A latter-day Austen, an academic, a romantic, a comic, a caustic chronicler of the commonplace . . . The novelist Barbara Pym became beloved and Booker Prize-nominated in the late twentieth century, yet many rejections, years in the literary wilderness and manuscripts stored in linen cupboards preceded her revival. Paula Byrne, author of The Adventures of Miss Barbara Pym, and Lucy Scholes, critic, Paris Review columnist and editor at McNally Editions, join the Slightly Foxed team to plumb the depths and scale the peaks of Barbara Pym's writing, life and loves. From Nazi Germany to the African Institute; from London's bedsit land to parish halls; from unrequited love affairs with unsuitable men to an epistolary friendship with Philip Larkin; and from rejection by Jonathan Cape to overnight success via the TLS, we trace Pym's life through her novels, visiting the Bodleian and Boots lending libraries along the way. There's joy in Some Tame Gazelle, loneliness in Quartet in Autumn, and humour and all human experience in between, with excellent women consistently her theme. We then turn from Pym to other writers under or above the radar, finding darkness in Elizabeth Taylor, tragicomedy in Margaret Kennedy and real and surreal rackety lives in Barbara Comyns. To round out a cast of excellent women, we discover Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca was foretold in Elizabeth von Arnim's Vera, and we recommend an eccentric trip with Jane Bowles and her Two Serious Ladies, as well as theatrical tales from a raconteur in Eileen Atkins's memoir. Fintan O'Toole was born in Dublin in 1958, the same year that T.K. Whitaker, a member of the Irish government, published an influential report suggesting that Ireland open its doors economically and culturally to the rest of the world. O'Toole's new book, “We Don't Know Ourselves,” weaves memoir with history to tell the story of modern Ireland.“There's a lot of dark stuff in the book,” he says, “there's a lot of violence and repression and hypocrisy and abuse. But there's also the story of a people coming to terms with itself. One of the reasons why we're still dealing with darkness is at least we're dealing with it. There's a kind of confrontation with the past going on in Ireland which I think is very healthy. It's not easy.” He continues: “One of the hopeful things about the Irish story is that it shows you that you can transform a nation — you can make it in many ways an awful lot better than it was, you can open it up to the world, you can develop much more complex, ambivalent, nonbinary senses of who you are — and yet you can still feel very much attached to a place and an identity.”Julie Otsuka visits the podcast to discuss her third novel, “The Swimmers,” which begins with a large group of characters at a public pool before becoming the powerful story of one particular woman, Alice, who is suffering from dementia.Alice is “actually there from the very beginning,” Otsuka says. “She's there at the end of the very first paragraph. But I did not want the reader to be too aware of her. I want her to be there very peripherally, just as one of many. I want the reader to realize, as the story is going on, that it is Alice's story, but I don't want that to be so apparent in the beginning. I really wanted to paint the world that she had thrived in before she enters the second half of the book.”Also on this week's episode, Alexandra Alter has news from the publishing world; and Gregory Cowles and Dave Kim talk about what people are reading. John Williams is the host. Here are the books discussed in this week's “What We're Reading”:“Lucky Breaks” by Yevgenia Belorusets“2666” by Roberto Bolaño“Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont” by Elizabeth TaylorWe would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general.
