We have more of Euripides' work than either of the other tragedians combined and yet the details of his life, him as a real person composing real art, are frustratingly lacking. And when they're not lacking, they're often just slander or wild misunderstandings of history. Today we begin looking at the life and times of Euripides, the first BEST playwright. CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing. In this edition of Madison BookBeat, host Sara Batkie speaks with Milwaukee-based author Katharine Beutner about her Edna Ferber Award-winning novel, Killingly, which is out now in paperback from Soho Crime.Massachusetts, 1897: Bertha Mellish, “the most peculiar, quiet, reserved girl” at Mount Holyoke College, is missing. As a search team dredges the pond where Bertha might have drowned, her panicked father and sister arrive desperate to find some clue to her fate or state of mind. Bertha's best friend, Agnes, a scholarly loner studying medicine, might know the truth, but she is being unhelpfully tightlipped, inciting the suspicions of Bertha's family, her classmates, and the private investigator hired by the Mellish family doctor. As secrets from Agnes's and Bertha's lives come to light, so do the competing agendas driving each person who is searching for Bertha. Where did Bertha go? Who would want to hurt her? And could she still be alive?Katharine Beutner takes a real-life unsolved mystery and crafts it into an unforgettable historical portrait of academia, family trauma, and the risks faced by women who dared to pursue unconventional paths at the end of the 19th century. Katharine is an associate professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; previously, she taught in Ohio and Hawai`i. She earned a BA in Classical Studies at Smith College and an MA in English (creative writing) and a PhD in English literature at the University of Texas at Austin. Her first novel, Alcestis, won the Edmund White Debut Fiction Award and was a finalist for other awards, including the Lambda Literary Association's Lesbian Debut Fiction Award.

Classicist Edith Hall joins the show to talk about her fantastic, important new book, FACING DOWN THE FURIES: Suicide, the Ancient Greeks, and Me (Yale University Press). We talk about the taboo of talking about suicide, how that taboo can lead to transgenerational damage, how that compares to the family curses in Greek tragedies, and what the Tragedians have to teach us about life (and death) today. We get into her grandmother's suicide and her mother's conspiracy of silence around it, her own suicidal ideation and how Heracles Mad helped her through her worst phase, the way Facing Down the Furies sprung from Edith's previous book, Aristotle's Way, the process of researching her family history after her mother's death, and how Philoctetes embodies It Gets Better. We also get into the gender difference of existentialists and the crappy behavior of male philosophers, the gender difference in our readings of Alcestis, why she's Team Iliad (and supports my reading of Achilles' tragedy), the one Greek tragedy that she wishes survived to reach us, and a lot more. Also, I go LONG in the intro about some family stuff that came up in the lead-in to this episode. It should go without saying: content/trigger warning if discussions about suicide are a problem for you. We're on a role talking about unique and fascinating Euripidean women, so following Iphigenia Among the Taurians and revisiting the Helen, we're left with the most bizarre story of them all, the Alcestis, a woman who agrees to die for her husband, an absolute [insert very specific British curse word here], only to be saved by Heracles once he's wrestled death. The perfect tragicomedy to end the year. This is all three parts of the episodes covering Euripides' Alcestis. CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Author Katharine Beutner takes a trip down memory lane with Laura to discuss their shared experience as editors of their high school literary magazine (!) before turning to a discussion of craft and crime. Beutner discusses the inspiration for her new novel, KILLINGLY; the art of historical fiction; writing novels vs. poetry; research; revision; women's colleges in the late 1800s; evolving attitudes surrounding queerness at the turn of the twentieth century; the ethics of fictionalizing an actual missing-person case; cat fanciers of yore; and more.   Killingly, a New England Gothic novel surrounding the aftermath of a student's disappearance from Mt. Holyoke College in 1897, was published by Soho Press in June 2023. Beutner is also the author of Alcestis, a queer retelling of the Greek myth, originally published in 2010 and re-released by Soho Press in September 2023. But before we get there we poke around at a few questions: why did tragedy arise in Athens?  Why did actors wear masks, and what's a deus ex machina? Then it’s on to Euripides himself—a poet well ahead of his time and the man the Athenians loved to hate—and his macabre marital masterpiece Alcestis. Apollo and Thanatos (NOT the purple guy) trade rap-battle insults while hubby Admetus behaves so insufferably maybe you’d die to get away from him too!

I Regret Nothing by Csaba SzékelyPart Two of TwoThe second half of I Regret Nothing picks up the story of retired Romanian secret service officer Dominic Cormoş as he comes face to face with the repercussions of his past and makes a decision that will shape his future and that of his 16-year-old neighbor Liza.In the first half of the play, Dominic was visited by two other characters: Alex Dima, one of Dominic's former subordinates and now a high-ranking agent in the intelligence service, planted a bug in Dominic's apartment and attempted to blackmail him into performing a high-stakes mission. And Liza, Dominic's sixteen-year-old neighbor, turned up asking to use his toilet when her abusive father's daily tirade kept her from her own apartment. An unexpected friendship between Liza and Dominic sprouted from a shared love of dogs. The character of Dominic was played by Paul Valley, Alex by Rob Neill, and Liza by Jocelyn Kuritsky, under Sarah Cameron Sunde’s direction.Play for Voices audio plays are recorded at Harvestworks by audio engineer Kevin Ramsay.Play for Voices is produced by Matt Fidler, Anne Posten, Katrin Redfern, and Jen Zoble.About the AuthorCsaba Székely was born in 1981 in Târgu Mureș, Romania.
