We're back--we hope you missed us! And we brought scissors, and we are not afraid to use them in spatchcocking a turkey for Thanksgiving. "Spatchcocking?" You may well ask. It's not just a word for removing the spine of the turkey to make for a wonderfully evenly roasted bird in half the time--say goodbye to over-cooked, dry breasts and under-cooked thighs (the turkey's, that is). But it's more than that as chef, teacher and cookbook author Kim O'Donnel explains in "Spatchocking: A Culinary Term for Our Times." Written in 2022 after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but perhaps even more resonant today, O'Donnel reflects on her own freedom to make choices that have shaped who she is."The right to decide allowed me to become the woman I am . . . The choices that were mine to make allowed me to forge my own path. They've given me the wisdom to know this: Without safe, legal abortion, this country is spatchcocked."Kim O'Donnel, "Spatchcock: A Culinary Term for Our Times," Lulu Pork Chop, July 3, 2022But what about Rhinebeck?! While other podcasters might broadcast live from the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival, we prefer to wallow in the womb of time and reflect on our experience for a month. What did we conclude? It wasn't just fun, it was joyously inspiring. We met so many designers and knitters we admire--Aimée Gille, Vincent Williams, Patty Lyons, Sarah Schira, Jamie Lomax, Bristol Ivy, Gigi Queen of Orange, the Grocery Girls and Rosann Fleischauer. What about Andrea Mowry? Don't worry, her pattern "Framed" clearly caught the collective fancy this year and was everywhere in all colors and sizes. It was magical to see so many people wearing hand-knit their framed garb on the hill for the meet-up.

Hybrid Yarn festivals continue in this episode where Jo is joined by Aimee of KnitSpinCake podcast to review her experience of attending Unravel's hybrid yarn show. Aimee took part in the social aspects, saw some of the vendor showcases and, after attending one workshop with Bristol Ivy, promptly booked onto another with her the next day. Aimee covered the organisation of the show and we discussed some of the technical aspects of how it was run, from a visitor's point of view. She shared her views on the workshop offerings as well as the vendor spotlights. You can find Aimee @knitspincake on Instagram and the podcast at http://knitspincake.blogspot.com Full shownotes are at www.shinybees.com/177 Music for this episode is with kind permission of Adam and the Walter Boys with 'I Need A Drink' available from iTunes.

With all the craziness happening the last few weeks here in the US and the terror attacks on the Capitol Building I had thought of skipping the Be A Helper Craft-a-long this year because my anxiety levels were hovering around vibrating-chihuahua-on-espresso for a while there, but after some reflection I think that we need it now more than ever. Welcome to our 5th annual craftalong! Inspired by the famous Mr Rogers quote that in times of trouble you should look for the helpers, I'm encouraging folks to BE the helpers.Be A Helper Craftalong5th Be A Helper Craft-a-long has begun! We keep the rules simple.• Anything you make for any charity counts, doesn’t have to be knit/crochet/woven or spun. ANYthing you make for ANY charity.• One FO submission of the Google Form https://forms.gle/QdJuQUSr8uM7GoiF6• Donating blood counts too • Google Form closes when I wake up April 15th.• Wips are welcome One change this year - due to the ongoing accessibility issues at Ravelry, finished objects can be submitted via a Google Form. I have pages set up to share your beautiful work on Ravelry, but if you want to win a prize, please submit the Google Form. I will link to the Google Form repeatedly over the net few months here in the shownotes, on Ravelry, on IG, on FB and anywhere else I can think to post so you'll be able to find the link when you're ready to submit. Link to submit your Finished Object/blood donation: https://forms.gle/QdJuQUSr8uM7GoiF6 FOs Tan House Brook Shawl (Ravelry) – this is a pattern by Jennifer Lassonde of Down Cellar Studios in the Sekhment base, an alpaca/silk/linen yarn from A Hundred Ravens in the Nevertheless She Persisted colorway that I bought during the virtual Maryland Sheep and Wool. I’m doing a few rows each week The Opposite of Strict (Ravelry) hat by That Metzbower Girl Designs and it’s a ponytail hat designed to use scraps. I used up the leftovers from the two RBG Dissent Cowls I made earlier this fall. Princess Blanket by Carol Hladik – wearable crochet blanket. WIPs Wenlock (Ravelery) from Tin Can Knits. Knitting done. Need to weave in ends Galliatt (Ravelry) by JimiKnits – pattern also available on LoveCrafts, using discontinued Longmeadow by Webs. I finished the front and am about 7” in to the back Willowbrook Shawl (Ravelry) – pattern by Brenda Castiel in my own handspun cotton. Fiber from HipStrings. I used 2 braids, pulled apart the colors, spun them in rainbow order then chainplied it to maintain the rainbow. I am nearing the end of orange – there’s a lot of orange. Pull Me Over sweater – This was my Christmas Day cast on, though I haven’t picked it up at all since then! Pattern by Andrea Black, using leftover Universal Yarns cotton that are leftovers from knitting my husband a sweater many, many years ago. Slice of Summer (Ravelry) – my New Year’s caston using BaH yarns shawl ball Ozone crochet top (Ravelry) – restarted it now that my crochet skills are better; already half way through the band of hexies that go around your ribcage Stash My family got me a subscription to Hipstrings Cotton Club! I am so happy to be a member again, I looooove her colorways. I got 2 2-oz braids (technically it was the December shipment) that are beautiful blends of purple, blue, brown, mauve and brown called Moody and On the Horizon. I’m thinking of pulling these 2 apart and making a chain ply, but not sure. For Christmas I got 3 colors of Nomad Yarn’s hand-dyed Gelato series. This time I got the green, blue and purple to go with the pink, orange and yellow that I bought during a virtual fiber event last summer. Now I have a whole gorgeous rainbow and I need to decide what to do with it! Spinning Buchanan Fiber gradient spin – the 4th color is done and plied I’ve been spinning 10 min a day Out and About Virtually Lots of fiber events happening online this winter Pigskin Party now through the Superbowl Ravelry Group I’m sponsoring for the 3rd year and also participating. If you have any events you’d like me to share please email me windsweptmonique@gmail.com On the Run We took our annual New Year’s Day hike. It’s normally a big group event in our town – groups of 30-ish people led by a guide on trails in our town. Of course it was a bit different this year. We hiked by ourselves on a new-to-us trail behind our local agricultural high school. Lovely trail plus the kids loved seeing the cows and horses. Other people on the trail but everyone maintained a safe distance and wore masks. Belly dancing - great for bad knees and so much fun!

It was a fun chat this episode after a long week. Knitting, old cookbooks, vintage Norwegian sweaters, and a few tangents! We also announced the winner of the Cosmic Crisp giveaway. Full notes with photos and links can be found in the podcast section of our shop website: TwoEwesFiberAdventures.com. Join the community on Ravelry or become a patron and support the show on our Patreon Page. Marsha’s Projects: I finished the John O Groats socks made with Yarns From the Plain sock yarn. I also cast on Summer Fjord by Trin-Annelie using Quince & Co Sparrow in three colors. Then I picked up a Simple Shawl by Jane Hunter that I started March 2018! The yarn I'm using is Michael’s CWD in San Francisco Fog. There's a new project coming, too. I'm swatching with Elemental Effects Cormo for either Holey Comfort by Hinterm Stein or Waits by Bristol Ivy and I'm swatching with North Ronaldsay DK for a Phrancko custom sweater for Ben. Kelly’s Projects I started a pair of socks using handspun Babydoll Southdown yarn. First sock is done and I went through some gyrations to use up as much yarn as I could while still doing a top down sock. I can see the benefit of toe up socks, but the problem solving gave my brain something to focus on that was kind of a fun puzzle. I started another spinning project with some Fleeber’s Farm Tasmanian Comeback. Light brown wool overdyed with red-orange. I’m planning a 2-ply dk to worsted weight yarn. One bobbin is spun. Vintage Norwegian Sweaters Marsha talked about finding photos of her family living in Norway in 1959 and the sweaters her parents bought. Marsha has also been finding fun little cookbooks that companies would giveaway to promote their products plus old clipping from her great aunt. Show Us Your Pattern. Closing June 4th! Show us your pattern! In the Ravelry thread show us how your used patterns look and tell us how you store your patterns. Marsha’s patterns are folded and mutilated by the end of a project. She has friends who keep their patterns pristine. Check out the Ravelry group to participate in the thread. Summer Spin Along Starts May 25 (US Memorial Day) There’s currently a thread in the group for planning for this. It will start on May 25 so there is time to think and plan.

Episode 68 recording on 11/20/19 today’s segments include New Patterns, Wips, FOs, Wearables and Rhinebeck Recap. Pattern Release Send Me That Horizon launched on Monday. I’ve always loved the sea. I grew up near the ocean, with both sets of grandparents living a few dozen feet from the water. Playing on the beach, listening to the waves, sailing on a boat, hiking along ocean-side cliffs – I love anything involving the sea. But nothing is the same as being far from shore with no land in sight. I love seeing the horizon taper off to meet the ocean waves; so when I first watched the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie and Captain Jack Sparrow looked into the distance and murmured “Send me that horizon” under his breath my heart sang. I know that feeling, I love that feeling, and with this shawl I want you to experience it too. While working on the waves, I wanted to create something easier than I’m perhaps known for. Yes, I realize that I’m known for patterns with complicated sections, because that’s what I like to knit. But with this pattern I wanted something that you could take on an airplane or to a retreat, or that a beginning knitter could knit and learn new skills. One of my test knitters was even a beginning knitter and he did a great job! Use code PODCAST to get 25% off the pattern on Ravelry, that’s coupon code PODCAST and that is bigger discount than the one listed in the pattern. Enjoy! Wips Just started a new pair of socks for mom for Christmas, still on the toe of the first sock. I’ve started a new project just for me. 2nd Aggregate Shawl by JimiKnits, this one in Tencel yarn from Rhinebeck 2 years ago from Artisinal Yarns. FOs 3 socks, Christmas socks for Thing 1 and Thing 2 and also a pair for my maid of honor all from Regia's Tutti Frutti II Hitchhiker by Martina Behm. Wearables All The Shawls. SO cold and wet – “Novembruary”. Both of the Changing Staircases, by Dragon Hoard Yarns, Hitchhiker by Martina Behm. At Rhinebeck I wore Frosted by Lisa K Ross with my Pont du Marais shawl, and day 2 I wore Second Grace by Bristol Ivy with my Taking Flight Captain Marvel shawl. Related – I’m mad that I can’t find my Tan House Brooke Shawl, a pattern by Jennifer Lassonde of Down Cellar Studios. I’ve looked everywhere and just cannot find it. Maybe I’ll have to knit another. Rhinebeck Recap All the fun for 2 whole days!
Episode 67 – Get Ready for Rhinebeck Segments this week include – Wips, FOs, Knitting Fail, Wearables and Out and About – getting ready for Rhinebeck edition Quick reminder, Pont du Marais shawl is on sale for podcast listeners – use code FOG to get 30% off through Friday, 10/18 Wips Christmas socks for Thing 2 – finished 1st, turned heel this morning for 2nd. New York Sheep & Wool Starts Thursday 10/17 – Sunday 10/20 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, NY. In a minute I’m going to go over some Tips For First Timers, but first lets do logistics. I will be there Saturday and Sunday likely almost all day both days. Feel free to stop me and say “Hi!” if you see me. On Saturday I will be at the Ravelry Meetup at noon on The Hill, and at the Podcaster meetup at 1, also on The Hill. On Sunday I will be at the Leaping Llama Contest in Bldg 34 at 11:15, and possibly at the Ravelry Meetup right afterwards, depending on timing. The rest of the time I’ll be walking around, shopping, knitting, spinning and soaking up the general awesomeness. Terminology – I’ve already used some words you might not understand if you haven’t been before The Hill – there are several small hills on the property and this confused me so much the first year I went. Look at the fairgrounds map – The Hill is just above the petting zoo. It’s a wide open hillside where lots of folks can gather The Buildings – shorthand for Buildings A, B, C, D and 41 which is really one large building divided into sections. Sometimes also refers to Building E, the food hall The Barns – a group of much smaller, free standing, well, barns, on the far side from The Buildings. Building 22 has Upper and Lower levels (separate entrances), the rest are all 1 story Food – lines are crazy from 11:30 to 2 – eat before or after if you can. Link to Map Seating – there are lots of places to sit, scattered around. However, if you have issues with mobility, bring a chair in your car and have someone in your party go get it for you. The paths or paved, but the fairground is all small hills. Sit down if you need to, it’s not worth getting hurt. Bags – try not to bring a backpack. I made this mistake the first year, and you keep bumping into people by accident, it’s not worth it. Book Signings & Author Talks – lots of fiber authors there, check out the link in the shownotes and make a note of who you want to see. On a related note – Make A List On Paper! - Check out the list of vendors (link to searchable page) Cell phone signal is spotty. Don’t count on having it – write down what you want to do, what time it is and where it is. Speaking of spotty cell signal – it affects the vendors too. If you have cash you won’t be stuck waiting while the vendor tries to process your card – and some of the bigger vendors will have a fast Cash-Only line. What am I bringing? Purse & 2 resuable shopping bags Water bottles – large one for the car, smaller one for carrying around in my purse. Larabars or healthy snack to combat the junkfood lol Cash Easy knitting – hitchhiker or a sock or both for walking around Intermediate knitting for hanging out with friends and dinner, etc Drop spindle and fiber Folding Chair Spinning Wheel & fiber for if I get tired and need to sit for a while What am I wearing? Haven’t decided yet, probably my Frosted sweater by Lisa K Ross or Dancing Dragons Coat by Heike Campbell over a Mommy’s Tunic or Second Grace by Bristol Ivy. I’ll probably have a shawl each day as well and maybe a hat or mitts. I’ll have layers underneath to keep warm because I am always cold. I will probably wear warm, well-loved boots the first day and sneakers the second

What we’re working on Allison's secret project is ongoing, and she’s started the Tullameen Mystery KAL for SweetGeorgia with new colours! She’s also working on “renovating” her office. Rachel has finally finished and blocked the Kippen Cardigan, but it looks to be a bit too small so will likely go to her mother. Fully bitten by the crochet bug, she's cast on a cowl in some unknown yarn, and is now obsessively crocheting so can cast on another cowl in handspun. Yarnporium KAL We are thrilled to have announced the projects for our Yarnporium KAL! The knit project is Karie Westerman’s brand new Béton Brut Shawl, designed in Walcot Yarns Opus. For the crocheters out there, we’re recommending the Filigree Tippet by Jo Smith also designed for Opus Walcot Yarns special offer: 10% off your order with the code YarnporiumKAL2018 at walcotyarns.com. Offer runs through 30 September, and is a single use only. The KAL kicks off on 15 September and wraps up on October 30, giving you just enough time to block your shawl for the Yarnporium! We’ll be doing a live cast on party on Instagram at 1 pm on September 15th – come join in, and come on over to the Yarnporium Countdown KAL thread in the Yarn in the City Ravelry group. Woolly Yarns In this episode, we review Marina Skua Mendip 4-ply, a hand-dyed yarn on two woollen-spun bases, Sunny and Stormy. Marina uses the same colours on both bases to make coordinated pairs, and this toothy yarn is perfect for colourwork and steeking! Many thanks for joining us for another episode! You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio (please rate, review and subscribe!) and you'll find us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night between 7 and 10pm at The Breakfast Club on Battersea Rise. We also have some Great London Yarn Crawl and Yarnporium updates! Thanks to our sponsor This episode of the podcast is sponsored by The Yarn Collective, a fibre and design company focused on working with independent designers to bring you luxurious hand-dyed yarns in a range of inspiring colourways. We are thrilled to be offering the Saturday talk series, which will include two panel discussions: The New Yarn Barons (all about what it takes to create a yarn, from the indy dyer with a few bespoke bases through up and coming new yarn companies), and Your Pattern in Print (learn about about different avenues for seeing your designs in the public eye, from self-publishing, mainline magazines and online exposure). The third talk is The Story of Laine – Sini and Ellen will give an overview of their yarn adventure creating Laine magazine, which has gone from an idea to a successful worldwide publication in less than two years. Ticket details Yarnporium day tickets: £10 in advance/£12 on the day (no weekend tickets) Talk series: £8 in advance/£10 on the day Sign up to our newsletter to be the first to know when tickets go on sale. What we’re working on Allison visited Villekulla in Calgary and is working on the Fuss Free Festival Shawl by Louise Tillbrook (Praline is in time out). She's also taught herself herringbone stitch for a secret project! Rachel is three quarters of the way through Study Hall by Sarah Schira from Knitty First Fall, and is finding that using two multi-coloured/speckled yarns for a pattern the depends on strong colour contrasts may not have been the best idea. But it’s still working! Working on Holiday Time Tits Out Collective update: Countess Ablaze and her crew of Tits Out Collective crafters raised over £55,000 for charities worldwide!!!! We may have teared up a little at that number. Well done to all! We chat about our holiday knits, new inspiration from Reykjavik (Rachel), and many many shops (Allison). Rachel's mentions: Halcyon Yarns (Bath, Maine), Joann (nationwide chain), sky like snow (southern Vermont). Allison's mentions: Villekulla, Yarn Twisters, Pinnovate, Loop Kensington, STASH, Pudding Yarn (Calgary); A Twist of Yarn (Vernon); Art of Yarn (Kelowna); plus plans to visit two shops in Vancouver. *** Many thanks for joining us for another episode! When and how did you first learn to knit? I think it was in 2014, and I learned by watching YouTube videos. Every time I encountered a new stitch or technique I would just watch videos and practice until I figured it out. My own grandmothers had long since stopped knitting by the time I had an interest, but I’m hoping to teach my daughter in a few more years. What was your first project? A cotton dishcloth. I knit 3 of them on some terrible plastic needles from Michael’s, but despite some dropped stitches and random yarn overs, they are still workhorses stashed away with my cleaning supplies! What is your biggest knitting disaster? Hmm. Nothing comes to mind really. I tend to stop long before something ends disastrously (in knitting..not necessarily in life!). I knit a Gaptastic Cowl as one of my earliest projects, before I knew what gauge was, and it was monstrously huge. I’m talking, could-have-clothed-a-linebacker big. Needless to say, it got frogged! What are you most proud of as a knitter? I’m proud to create beautiful, useful, long lasting items that can be tangible examples for my loved ones of how much I care about them (because it’s a big time & energy investment!). And, when I knit for myself, I’m proud to engage in an activity that is a powerful act of self care both in the actual making of the thing, and then in the wearing of it. It really feels like I’m nurturing myself when I cast on something lovely with only myself in mind. We should really call it self-love knitting, rather than selfish knitting! What are you favorite items to knit? Stuffed toys for the important tiny humans in my life, and shawls for myself Are you a process knitter or a product knitter? I’m both! I used to be more of a product knitter but the more time goes on the more I’ve found that the act of knitting has become incredibly important to my well being. I’m a stay-at-home parent now, and it is hands down the most difficult job I’ve ever had (and I used to literally save babies for a living as an NICU nurse). Knitting allows me to satisfy so many of own needs: for mental stimulation, quiet alone time, and creative expression, all of which are hard to come by at this stage of my life. So, process has become extremely important to me as well. That said, I can’t fully engage in a project unless the finished object is something I’m excited to gift or wear. What it will be definitely still matters. Do you have any knitting goals? Projects? Techniques? I’d love to learn brioche, dive into sweater making, and eventually learn enough of the math involved to begin tech editing. Math doesn’t come easily to me, but I love editing. I can learn, right? Do you do any other fiber arts other than knitting? Not yet, but I have grand plans to learn embroidery, weaving, sewing, and rug punching. I want to learn it all! Especially sewing, I am most excited about eventually being able to make my own clothes and stop relying on fast fashion, which isn’t in line with my values and not the example for resource stewardship that I want to set for my daughter. But because she is so little, and free time is so scarse, new hobbies have to wait a while. Do you have any other super powers other than knitting? Momming. Thats a super power right?? I never really felt that i had a “true calling” until my child was born. Mothering, while certainly not all unicorns and rainbows, is really a natural aptitude for me. I’m good at it, and I love it (most days). I used to be a pretty good writer too, back in the day, and I can pick up new languages easily. I’m also a PADI Divemaster, which means I can teach some scuba diving courses and guide other divers around sites. I’m an excellent shark spotter! If there is one to be found or spotted in the distance, I promise i’ll see it. Anything else you’d like to tell the world? (shameless self promotion!) I’m incredibly passionate about feminism (intersectional or bust), and birth and the myriad of ways the two intersect. And I’ll happily chat about either with anyone, anytime! Adventures in Mommyhood Emily- Tooth pop!! Nap schedule has been terrible! THREENAGER temper tantrums. Karla- So stoked and so bummed Inquiring minds Tell us about you! This week, Felicia talks with Meghan Fernandes and Lydia Gluck: the two co-founders and editors of Pom Pom Quarterly. If you aren't already familiar with what Pom Pom is, it's a beautiful, fresh, and modern quarterly magazine for knitting, crochet, and craft that was founded back in 2012. It's a magazine that has lovely patterns, thoughtful articles, and useful tutorials. This past summer, they celebrated their 5th anniversary of Pom Pom. In the past 5 years, they have expanded out from magazine to also designing and publishing books, hosting awesome events, and producing a monthly podcast called Pomcast. Meghan is a former American transplant to London, where she lived for a decade. Now back in her native land, she is at the helm of Pom Pom in North America. While in London she wrote her MA dissertation on knitting in 20th century women's literature and worked for a publisher, a gallery, and a knitting shop, leaving her with a random but particular set of skills that could really only lead to running a knitting magazine. Meghan now lives in Austin, Texas with her husband and baby daughter. Lydia was born in London, grew up in Wales, studied in Manchester, and left her heart in Mexico. Lydia has a background in linguistics, and spends a lot of time trying to draw parallels between knitting and grammar. Now she heads up the London Pom Pom office, which is pretty much her favourite job ever. Please join us this week as Felicia and the Pom Pom ladies discuss creating a new and unique voice for fibre artists! In this episode, we talk about: 1:35 Introducing the dynamic duo behind Pom Pom and chatting about how they celebrated the magazine's 5th anniversary 4:35 Felicia asks the ladies about tips on how to survive knitwear photo shoots 5:20 How Pom Pom Quarterly began 7:20 Discussing what Meghan and Lydia thought was missing from other knitting magazines when they decided to start Pom Pom 9:00 How Pom Pom makes it work without being funded by advertising and how the magazine is able to attract readers from a wide range of ages 12:15 Felicia asks Meghan about her master's dissertation on knitting in 20th century women's literature and how feminism fits into Pom Pom 17:10 Chatting about Knitting Outside the Box: a new collaboration between Pom Pom Press and Bristol Ivy 18:44 Felicia asks Meghan and Lydia how they manage to continue Pom Pom Magazine while living thousands of miles apart 22:16 Is there a difference between knitting communities in the US and the UK? 23:49 Lydia chats about her new hobby: weaving 26:25 What Pom Pom has in store for the future 28:00 Felicia's final notes and podcast giveaway! Sponsor: The Yarn Collective is a new fibre and design company focused on working with the best independent designers to bring you luxurious hand-dyed yarns in a range of inspiring colorways. The Yarn Collective has kicked off the launch with a trio of designers representing the best of modern knitwear design; Melanie Berg, Carol Feller and Bristol Ivy. Carol Feller’s line Bloomsbury DK, a 100% merino, comes in a range of 10 shades, selected by herself based on colors that work well together and enhance each other. “Each story also has neutral shades included which create links between all the colors.” She’s launched the line with 3 patterns; The Dango hat, Lignite Sweater and Russler Shawl, which were all designed to show how the colors were created to mesh together. Episode 22 - 9/20/17 Today’s topics include Wips, Knitting Fail, Knitting Chat: The Importance of Taking Measurements and On the Run: Foam Rolling Thanks for your patience this week! This is the 3rd time I’ve tried to record. Any of you who’ve ever lived with a 2-year old can appreciate why I only record when he’s asleep so you can imagine what this week has been like! And to top it off the boys had stolen my pop filter to play with – finally found it around 10pm last night buried under a blanket. Also, thanks for the kind concern about my in-laws. They are fine after Irma. Since it swung west it nearly hit them directly buy it had weakened some. They lost power for a long time and had three trees crash across their rather long driveway but they cut a path out through the worst and were able to leave the house soon after. I truly hope that you and all your loved ones are safe, be it from Irma, Harvey, Maria, the fires out west, the Mexico earthquakes, the flooding last month in Nepal and India or whatever chaos may be happening in your part of the world. Please stay safe. Wips Second Grace by Bristol Ivy in Berroco’s Modern Cotton, 99% complete. Need to weave in ends, and take some pictures. Lillesand by Monika Eckhert, working on this in some deep stash, Cascade Yarn’s Sateen in a burgundy-red color and Rozetti Yarns Soft Payette in white with a few sequins for sparkle here and there. It’s a Christmas gift for my aunt who loves true, deep reds. Emerald Deep by Romi Hill – a shawl designed for green yarn and I have some Prism Delicato Layers I bought a few years ago to make a gift for my cousin’s wife, then found out I was pregnant with baby #2 and it got put on hold. But it is sooooo perfect for this pattern. Shawl has a lace version of Celtic knotwork and I can’t wait to get to that part. I am halfway through Chart 2 and the “knotwork” is Chart 3 – so close! Itty Bitty Kitty – test knit for Sarah Jordan a new friend I met at SSK this summer and a great designer. It’s a sock-weight preemie hat and I am nearly done with the ribbing. Knitting this up in Berroco Comfort Sock which leads to my (sort of)… Knitting Fail 4:30 More of a parenting fail involving yarn, but work with me here. I started the Itty Bitty Kitty preemie had at the opposite end of a skein of yarn that has a partial 2nd sock on it. No biggie. Until my 2 year old got a hold of it. Now I have complete yarn chaos and I am now alternating between unravelling the awful mess and knitting up what I just unraveled. Knitting Chat Today I want to talk about measuring yourself. The keys to knitting a garment that fits you perfectly are 1) a good gauge swatch and 2) accurate measurements of your body. You really need someone else to help you with this. When you try to measure yourself you actually shift your body and that can affect your measurements. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have someone ELSE take your measurements. In the shownotes I am linking to an old Lion Brand Yarns blog post that has lots of great pictures showing you exactly where and how to take 14 different measurements, including bust, waist, hips, arm length and armhole depth, all of which are critical to making sure a garment fits YOUR body. So get a buddy, a tapemeasure and a piece of paper and pen and go take YOUR measurements before you knit another garment. Bust – fullest part of your bust Waist – natural waist, not where your pants sit. If you’re unsure, bend sideways and see where your body creases, that’s usually a good indicator Hips – measure around the widest part of the hips, usually around 8” [20cm] below your natural waist Armhole depth - Measure from the top outside edge of the shoulder down to the armpit. Upper arm – the widest part of your arm, above the elbow Cross back – measure from shoulder to shoulder across your back – since many of us have rounded shoulders, this will be larger than if you take the measurement in the front. And in case you’re wondering why no pattern ever seems to fit you perfectly as-written, I am also linking to Craft Yarn Council’s sizing chart so you can see what numbers designers are (often) expected to use. Womens. Mens. Kids. And because it bears repeating – get someone to help you to! On the Run Today we’re still talking about injury prevention and I want to discuss a pro-active technique you can use to help yourself: Foam Rolling. Foam rolling is a type of self-massage where you use a tool, in this case a large foam cylinder, to release knots in the muscle and tight areas in your fascia, which is like a membrane over your muscles that sort of holds you together. Foam rolling in it’s essence is quite simple. You use your own body weight and a foam roller to carefully put pressure on the knots and tight places. This helps improve blood flow and increase your range of motion when the tight places in your fascia start behaving like their normal, stretchy selves again. Foam rolling can be uncomfortable, but it should not be excruciating. I’ve been guilty of this myself - if you’re gasping in pain (for me it’s rolling out IT bands) you’re doing it wrong – lift some of your weight up off the roller or attack the knot more gently. If you are getting sharp pains, SEE A DOCTOR. Afterwards you may find some of those areas a little tender, or even itchy, this is normal. Give those spots a day or two to recover before you roll out again. Itching is actually a good sign, it’s a sign of increased blood flow. Do NOT foam roll over joints – at best it does no good, at worst you can hurt yourself. Stick to rolling out your soft tissue. If you need to roll out your back (I find this soooo helpful after hefting a 30lb toddler around every day) – make sure you angle yourself slightly so you’re rolling either one side of your back muscles or the other and do NOT roll straight up your spine. I’m linking to a recent podcast by the new Get Fit Guy, Brock Armstrong, all about foam rolling. You can read his transcript and find links to the studies he mentions which I don’t have time to get into here. I’m also linking to a Runner’s World article which has videos showing you how to foam roll different muscles properly. Lastly I’m linking to a study from the National Institutes of Health that quantified how foam rolling helped the participants. In summation, foam rolling is a technique that you can use yourself to help release tention in your muscles and fascia and prevent future injuries.
Episode 21 - 9/7/17 Wips Hitchhiker for my MIL in Ito Yarn’s Kinu 100% silk New CO, Second Grace by Bristol Ivy in Berocco Modern Cotton. Gotten a lot done since I threw my back out and have been sitting a LOT. Body just a few rows from the underarms, also have 1.5 sleeves done. Using 7 colors, the main color is green, a medium-dark green with a hint of blue to it, then the fair isle parts are in navy, light blue, yellow, rust, medium-purple, and turquoise. It’s forced me to learn 3-colors-at-a-time colorowork and since I cannot get tension holding yarns in 2 hands, I’ve adapted the 2-color-continental hold for colorwork to be a 3-color hold, all in the left hand. I’m not a fan, but I’ve gotten to the point where I can do it and make it look decent. Triyang Shawl by Lee Meredith in Araucania’s Yumbrel, a lace-weight cotton in the pastels colorway, peach, pink, sky blue and light purple Stash Blue Heron Yarn’s Cotton/Rayon blend from A Great Yarn in Chatham, Cape Cod, MA. Love this yarn, love Blue Heron colorways I’ve knit with them several times in the past. With all the talk Laura of the KnitGirlllls has been doing about the Evenstar, I’m debating making it again. I’ve already knit it 1.5 times, that is, 1 finished in a sport weight yarn (basically made a blanket) and 1 skirt made out of it, but haven’t made the top for the dress yet. Someday I’ll finish it. But yeah, totally tempted to make Evenstar again, I LOVE that pattern Pattern Stalking Lillesand by Monika Eckert – a colorwork cowl that I’m debating making for my aunt for Christmas. I have a white sparkly yarn and red yarn that this would look GORGEOUS in. Haven’t bought it yet but don’t be surprised if you hear me cast this one on soon Wearables Mommy’s Tunic, knit last spring/early summer in Juniper Moon Farm’s Neve in a cornflower blue Empire Top, just finished a few weeks back and got to wear it for the first time on a col evening :) Knit in Picoboo by Frogtree, a discontinued bamboo/cotton blend Out and About Spent Labor Day weekend at my parent’s place on Cape Cod, which was good because I threw my bavk out the day we drove down. And my parents are super awesome. Even though I’m over 30 and have kids of my own, my parents took great care of me and it was feeling much better till I threw it out again yesterday wrestling my tantrum toddler into the car. Sigh. But we had a great visit even though it was chilly. On the Run No running, since I threw my back out, but I have been able to walk my oldest son to school, thankfully. But I would like to talk more about injury prevention this week. I want to talk about a common foot problem that can lead to injuries in your kinetic change, which we discussed last time: pronation. In rough, non-medical terms, you can think of pronation as how your foot rolls through a step. I know you medical folks are probably yelling at your devices, but work with me here, I’m trying to avoid medical jargon and anatomy terms on purpose. Like me, you could be an over-pronator, meaning your ankles roll inward when you walk and you push off primarily from your big toe. You could be a supinator, or under-pronator, whose ankles roll outward and push off from your outer foot. Or you could be a neutral walker and push off using basically all your toes. There’s no good way to determine this yourself because once you start thinking about it, your gait will change. If you’re dealing with knee or hip issues, that is, issues further up the kinetic chain, you should go to a running store and ask them to determine if you have a neutral gait, over-pronate or supinate, because once you know that you can get the correct shoe to help correct any pronation problems, if you have them. Any good running store will have people there who know how to determine your gait type.
Episode 20 – 8/23/17 There might not be a show next week – it’s Thing 1’s last week before Kindergarten starts so we’re planning lots of fun stuff to end the summer. But I’ll definitely be back the following week. FOs Empire Top by Lily Go in discontinued bamboo/cotton blend, Picoboo by Frogtree Wips Triyang Shawl by Le Meredith in Yumbrel Araucania Hitchhiker for my MIL in Kinu by Ito yarns, 100% silk Cast on Second Grace by Bristol Ivy (first Bristol Ivy pattern) using Berroco Modern Cotton, then ripped it out to go down a needle size for the ribbing, and started casting it on again. I’m about half way through a cast on. Wearables Thoughts by Joji Locatelli on Araucania Yumbrel, a discontinued cotton lace-weight yarn Today’s Discussion: There are No Knitting Police Some people are really hesitant to change something and are fearful that they are doing it “wrong” but I want to assure you there are no knitting police. When you’re knitting from a pattern you do NOT have to do it exactly as written, you do NOT have to use the same yarn. Do you have a long torso? Add some extra rows. Short torso? Feel free to skip a few. Do you like your bum covered but the pattern doesn’t seem to work well in that area? Add some short rows in the back to cover your derriere. Love the body of the sweater but hate the sleeves? That’s fine, you could find a new pattern or just knit them in stockinette. Switch up the yarns (I’ll be doing a whole podcast on this in a future episode). My point is, once you purchase a pattern, it’s yours to alter as you please for your own sweater. I am NOT saying you should tweak the pattern and publish it – that’s a copyright violation. But tweak the pattern to fit your body and your knitting style. Here’s an example – I hate inserting sleeves after the fact, I can never get them to line up properly. So I don’t. I look at the sleeve pattern, reverse the pattern, then pick up and knit stitches around the arm hole and work all my sleeves that way, no matter what the pattern says. On the Run I’ve been running the past few weeks but haven’t mentioned it because the knitting segments have been running long. But this is the “Knitting On The Run” podcast after all so it’s time to get back on track. I’ve been injured basically since right after this podcast started, so over the next few weeks I want to talk about some injury issues and injury prevention. Even if you don’t run you might learn something that could help you, particularly if you’re dealing with chronic pain in your knees or hips for example. First off – disclosure, I am not a medical professional. I am only someone who has gotten injured a lot and has had to learn a lot the hard way. If you are in pain, please consult a doctor or specialist. That being said, today let’s talk quickly about body mechanics and injuries. When you’re running you are putting stress on your body, particularly your lower body. That’s a good thing, it keeps you in shape and your body is designed to move, not sit. You run into problems (and injuries) when something is off. If you have a mechanical issue, say in your foot or hips, the rest of your lower body, aka kinetic chain has to compensate. (linking to the American Academy or Orthopedic Surgeons to learn more). Over time the muscles, tendons and ligaments doing the compensating have too much stress on them and that’s where you get an injury. So the CAUSE of your injury isn’t necessarily where your injury APPEARS. That is why cross training and strength training is soooo important – you use your muscles different ways and strengthen the weak muscles. Real world example – hip flexors (group of muscles/tendons/etc in front of your hips that you use to lift your legs. If they are really tight then they pull on your hamstrings so your hamstrings are always stretched and rarely relax. You’ll eventually end up with a pulled hamstring, but the cause isn’t the hamstring, it’s the hip flexors. Your hamstring is where the kinetic chain broke down

Episode 15 – 6/29/17 FOs, Wips, Knitting Fail, Stash, Wearables, Tip Time, Out and About, On the Run and In the Gardenp FOs Maris Stella shawl – it’s finished! End aren’t woven in yet, but it’s done. Knit in Ocean View gradient kit by Birdies Knits Wips Green Hitchiker – Valley Yarns Greylock 100% Cashmere; approximately 90% complete. So close! I’m limiting it to 3 rows before washing my hands so the progress is sort of slow going, but it’s nearly done. Purple Hitchiker – Cascade Ultra Pima Fine 100% Cotton in Periwinkle (but really more of a royal purple) – about 20% complete. I’ve been focusing on other projects, so not much progress on this one Firebird – Cast on the Firebird Shawl by Romi Hill in Blue Heron yarns Egyptian Mercerized Cotton in Carnelian. On row 5 of Chart B. The beginning was fairly simple (side note – knitting fail) so I worked on this while watching the America’s Cup. Ironicaly Knitting Fail occurred after the races ended! Empire Top – Cast on again. Figured out what the problem was last time around. For background, I’d gotten 1 extra st per inch over 4 inches so I cast on 1 size smaller to compensate for those extra few inches over my ribcage circumference. I sat down with a tape measure last week to double check my math and discovered that I’ve lost 3 inches around my ribs at 2 around my bust! No wonder the blasted top didn’t fit, I’d shrunk! I’ve been working my tail off at Physical Therapy the last 4 months and I’ve only lost 5 pounds so I hadn’t bothered to re-measure myself. Thankfully I did before I got any further on the Mommy’s Tunic pattern so I could adjust that down a size too. Mommy’s Tunic – I finished the cable band and grafted it, then began knitting bust. As I mentioned previously, I ended up going with a smaller size. I’ve finished bust darts and split for front and back – currently working on the back panel. Knitting Fail Firebird 2.0 – Finished Chart A and the first few rows of Chart B and I just couldn’t get the right # of sts on the last repeat so I finally just gave up and unraveled and started again. It was so early in the process that I’m not upset – though I am now using lifelines again, lol Stash No actual stash, but I need to find some pink yarn. My mother-in-law saw the pink hitchhiker shawl I made for my Family og Hitchhikers project and she really liked. So I need to track down a similar color pink, if I can – alas Webs, where I bought the yarn, has been sold out of that color for the last month. I will keep looking, and I’ll check some fun yarn stores I know on Cape Cod next week. Wish me luck! Wearables Thoughts by Joji Locatelli, knit in Araucania’s Yumbrel a discontinued yarn in the Pastels colorway. I find myself wearing this a lot now that the weather is warm. It’s ¾ length sleeve and made in lace-weight yarn so it’s nice and light, the perfect sweater to wear to a movie theater or cool restaurant on a hot day. I’m seriously debating making another one in a very different color. Tip Time When picking up sts, use a smaller needle so you don’t get that baggy-looking first row of knit stitches. I try to go at least 3 sizes smaller when I can – for socks this isn’t always possible, but for garments I just grab whatever small needles are handy. Today I used a US Size 1 (2.25mm) to pick up sts on a garment I’m knitting on US Suze 6 (4mm). That’s a smaller needle than I would normally use, but I had it handy so I used it. Out and About Next week I’m off to visit my parents on Cape Cod and one of my favorite LYS, A Great Yarn in Chatham which is also a book store. Seriously, if they served tea or mimosas it would be the perfect store. Planning on packing my Mommy’s Tunic, the 2 hitchhikers, and maybe and old sock or the Hamilknit hat. Can’t decide if I want something else mindless, or something I want to actually work on. I know I could finish the hat and the green hitchhiker easily, and make good progress on the others which is why I’m thinking of bringing 4 projects. There’s definitely a part of me that wants to bring something new to cast on, which I just should not do, but the Second Grace sweater by Bristol Ivy is calling my name and I already have the yarn for it…. Gah! Too many choices!!! July 20-23 off to Nashville for the Super Summer Knitogether with The Knit Girllls August off to NS, Canada to visit family On the Run I graduated from Physical Therapy! Woohoo!!!! Very happy to be done. I have come so far and I feel a LOT stronger than I did 3 months ago. My abs and glutes in particular are much, much stronger which should really help when I start running again. Fingers crossed, I’m hoping to do some very simple runs next week on holiday – something like run 30 secs, walk 90 secs repeat 2-3 times. I’m starting back slooooooowly so I don’t re-injure myself. In the Garden First crop – sugar snap peas are ripe and delicious. Also, we debate moving the garden itself next year because our trees have grown a LOT in the past 10 years and the garden is now part shade.

Find, print and hang more photos in our home. Why? I scrapbooked 2005-2009 of my life and then again for part of 2013. I am so grateful to have documented the stories of that time in my life, especially as my nieces and nephews were born. I want to fill in the gaps and document those stories before I lose them. Kids were still so little then. So many cute photos, memories, milestones. funny things they said. I have boxes of photos & memorabilia my mother thoughtful saved for me. I want to organize it and purge what I don’t want and find a system for making this into something worth saving and sharing. I want to remember and celebrate my life. I want to share stories with my family and pass along wisdom where I can. What I've done so far: Identified an approach- Stacy Julian, Library of Memories approach combined with Project Life divided page protectors Sorted through childhood memorabilia based on these categories Assessed finished scrapbooks. Sort through emails and journals. Momento app all to pull social media. Reorganize 2014 photos already printed into LOM approach. Started scrapbooking them! Heard tip to put photos in divided Pocket Pages first. get that finished. Did that while binge watching with dan and my friend laura. felt productive but didn't take as much brain space as actually scrapbooking. Easier to batch and liked that I could do it from the couch. Working on Project Life App for 2017 and 2016 photos. Appreciate that the app allows me to scrapbook on my phone anywhere. Visiting with friends. Binge watching, Season 3 of the Affair. The Crown. Black Mirror. I had a good appointment with my Physical Therapist. Weight Watchers is going well. I met a new personal goal! It’s easy to forget though, that amazing women like Anna, have someone equally amazing beside them, cheering them on and supporting them through their endless ideas and […]
We are back from Farnham, and are slowly recovering from the fantastic weekend that was Unravel! In this episode, we talk about the show, get a North American perspective on Unravel from Kate Atherley, and cover the usual news, events and current projects. Shout-Outs So many shout outs today! First up is a shout out to the lovely Sarah from Crafts from the Cwtch (go check out her blog now!). Sarah has written the first review of the London Craft Guide, and we are so glad she enjoyed the book! Another big shout out to Maylin who sent us a lovely note on Sunday about the book that really helped us power through the end of a very long weekend. Finally, thanks so much to everyone who came by the booth and looked at the book, checked out the yarn and shared it with their friends! We'd particularly like to thank Julie of Evie and Lily who came by throughout the weekend to keep us up to date on her Instagram efforts. Book news So, the book is launched, which means we are up to our eyeballs in fulfilment. A few local yarn shops picked up their wholesale orders at Unravel, so if you are looking to find the book in the wild, you can get it at Nest, Wild & Woolly, and Knit with Attitude in London, A Yarn Story in Bath, and Fig Tree Yarns in Jersey. It will also soon be available at Loop,Handweavers Studio & Gallery and Stag & Bow in London, and at The Old Pharmacy in Faversham. If you preordered the book before 17th of February, you should now have received a Paypal invoice to cover the shipping on your book. If you have not received this invoice, please let us know via the contact links at the bottom of the page, and we will get you sorted out. Upcoming Events 28th February - Decorative Estonian Cast Ons with Lucinda Guy at YAK in Brighton 12th March - Introduction to Brioche and Shawl Shapes with Bristol Ivy at Loop. The Brioche class is sadly sold out, but the Shawl class will look at how to create different shawl shapes and then add stitch patterns and play with unconventional shaping. 13th March - Knitting Outside the Box with Bristol Ivy at Loop. This full day class is great for people interested in designing, or just wanting to experiment. 16th March - Introduction to Brioche with Bristol Ivy, this time at YAK in Brighton. A good alternative if you miss out on the Loop class. 17th-20th March - Edinburgh Yarn Festival 2016!!!! Classes start on the Thursday, marketplace is Friday and Saturday with associated other goings on. Rachel will be there with Porpoise Fur and will have the book available, so if you'd like to check it out (or get some spinning fluff), come on by! What we're working on Rachel finished her Because Sock Yarn by Kate Atherley, in the amazing Yarn in the City colourway dyed for us by Third Vault Yarns, and upon showing it to the designer, discovered that there was some (ultimately highly successful) user error involved in her sample. More on that to come in a future blog post. She also finished a second colourway for the Ironwork hat, and has started a shop sample for A Yarn Story and a handspun Honey Cowl (she might be the only person in the world who has not knit this yet) out of SweetGeorgia BFL/silk in the "Rogue" colourway. Allison has sadly missed out on having a new FO for this episode, but she's forging ahead on her Candy Bag sample, her handspun Gradient Pullover, and a very long-standing WIP, the Tulip Cardigan. Unravel-ed This episode we sit down for a quick Stitch n' Babble with the lovely Kate Atherley, who has recovered enough from her trans-Atlantic jet leg to tell us a bit about her impressions of Unravel and the differences between UK and North American shows. Please forgive the occasional long pauses as we were all feeling the effects of a seriously wool fume heavy weekend. As always, please let us know what you think by tweeting, liking, or loving our posts when you see them go up onTwitter,Facebook and Instagram – or even better, leave a comment in the shownotes, post on our Ravelry board or send us an email at hello@yarninthecity.com. You can find us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio (and please consider leaving a review for us!), or download us directly from the Yarn in the City website. Our Knit Night is every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at The Goat on the Rise in Clapham Junction. We'd love to have you join us! Sponsor: I wanted to thank this week’s sponsor, Fancy Tiger Crafts, a beautiful yarn shop based out of Denver Colorado. This inspired place is owned and operated by self proclaimed fiber nerds, Jaime Jennings and Amber Corcoran…two women who’s hope and journey have allowed them to share their knowledge, adventures and passion in fiber, and this is reflected in their beautiful shop as well as their endeavors in creating their own yarn Heirloom, which you can find in their shop, both in person and online. Make sure to share and visit fancytigercrafts.com Fancy Tiger Crafts has some great upcoming classes and workshops taught by some of our favorite fiber folks. This week on August 13th and 15th, Bristol Ivy will be teaching two classes, Brioche 101 and Knitting Outside the Box. On September 3rd, Meghan Shimek will be teaching a tapestry weaving workshop, which includes a loom designed by Meghan herself. For more information and to register, visit fancytigercrafts.com/classes Fiber folk: I first got to know Jaime and Amber via Instagram and later on in person when they were visiting the Bay Area. I’m very excited to share the sixth episode of the Woolful podcast. Today we get to meet two fiber folk that inspire in different ways. Jennifer King of The Sachem Farm and Bristol Ivy. Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Yarn, a charming online and local yarn shop based in Eureka, California. Yarn was created by Sunni Schrivner who has a dedication for natural fibers and supporting local yarns. Make sure to visit Yarn in person when on the coast in hum bolt county and online at yarn-fun.com. Fiber folk 1: Bristol is a designer, spinner, jack of all trades for Brooklyn Tweed and lover of cats from Portland, Maine. You can find her at blackbirdturning.blogspot.com and on Instagram @bristolivy. And with that, here’s Bristol… Man on the Street: For this week’s “Man on the Street” I asked a handful of fiber enthusiasts to answer the following question, “What fiber aspirations do you have for the new year?” We had many amazing replies from Andrea (@dreareneeknits), Nikki (@woolenviolet), Sonja (@atreebytheriver), Andi (My Sister’s Knitter) and Brittney (Wool + Wood). Fiber folk 2: Our next guest I met through the Woolful blog, after she wrote me one of the most encouraging notes, shared from […]
Hello again everyone and welcome to the last month of 2014! On The Needles Ginkgo Shoulderette Shawl : do you have pattern suggestion for the leftover yarn? I might have 200+ yards of light fingering weight yarn. Hitofude Sallah Cowl by Bristol Ivy. First pattern by this designer. Wanted to knit Hanois Cowl. Designer notes on size and shaping. Helpful notes by chromakate. Do you look for helpful notes before beginning a project? I've received my November Yarnbox shipment (my second one): Outlaw Yarn's Bohemia Sport, a unique blend of 45% Polwarth, 45% Alpaca, and 10% Possum fiber. It comes with a set of fingerless mitts and beret with a knitted bow by Rhiannon McCulloch called So Boho. I'm still debating between the So Boho or the Mothed pattern by Mag Kandis, a pattern published on Knitty Deep Fall 2010. Get Your Geek On! December: Latin word decem. Interesting name meanings of the months.
