Many were wondering how the Cubs would respond after Kyle Hendricks masterful start on Monday, and, for the most part it was another good game to watch. However, the Cubs lost 5-4 in San Diego in dramatic fashion as Frank Schwindel's deep drive to left field came just short at the wall, something we've seen a lot in baseball this year. Alfonso Rivas homered for the Cubs and Wade Miley made his Cubs debut. Luke, Cody, and Ryan recap the loss and a lot of good despite another one added in the loss column. Ian Happ and Justin Steele both had big weeks: within 24 hours, they each got engaged…and that's the best news we've got! Marcus Stroman also dominated in Milwaukee (Cubs beat Corbin Burnes AGAIN), Alfonso Rivas looks like he is inching toward “regular 1B status,” and we consider Ian Happ as a sensible extension candidate (lol, we know the Cubs don't do that, but we can dream!). We also talk about a few of the Cubs rising prospects: Caleb Kilian, PCA, and the very fun and under-the-radar Cam Sanders. On the disappointing side, we talk about the Cubs actual game results and Frank Schwindel's borderline shocking peripherals. Follow us over @awaygamespod and tweet us literally anything except any talk about the “Pitch Lab”!
To kick off the show the crew dives right into things with some week 3 takeaways. After that they play “Let's go shopping”. Hitters: Yandy Diaz, Alfonso Rivas, Hunter Dozier, Tommy Pham, Sheldon Neuse, Ha-Seong Kim, Patrick Wisdom, Brandon Drury. In the second hour, Bruce Levine and David Haugh were joined by Cubs slugger Alfonso Rivas to reflect on his long journey to the big leagues and to explain why he's just getting started. Later, White Sox infielder Jake Burger joined the show to discuss his strong start, the team's struggles and what lies ahead.
The Cubs had three hits and the Brewers had six homers. It was a blood bath at Wrigley North Friday night and one the Cubs hope to forget as they hope to avenge something in the rest of this series. Cubs lose 11-1 to the Brewers. Alfonso Rivas had two of the three hits and Kyle Hendricks did not build off his best start of the season last Saturday against the Pirates as he gave up three of the six homers.
