D. B. Cooper is the name we use for a man who hijacked a Boeing 727 aircraft in the pacific northwest, in the airspace between Portland and Seattle on Wednesday, November 24, 1971.  He demanded a ransom and leaped from the plane with a parachute…probably. Despite a manhunt and massive FBI investigation, the man has never been located or identified. It remains the only unsolved case of air piracy in commercial aviation history. The FBI maintained an active investigation for 45 years after the hijacking. The FBI kept the case open till July 2016.    This episode brought to you by, Magic Mind! His military experience included advanced jump training and wilderness survival. He was a crazy fan of DB Cooper, claiming he could "write the epitaph for D.B. Cooper".  Late in his life he reportedly told three of his sons, a retired Utah judge, and a friend in the Salt Lake City public defender's office that he had committed the hijacking. Photos of Gossett taken circa 1971 bear a close resemblance to the most widely circulated Cooper composite drawing. According to Galen Cook, a lawyer who has studied Gossett for years, claimed Gossett once showed his sons a key to a Vancouver safe deposit box which, he claimed, contained the ransom money. Gossett's eldest son, Greg, said that his father, a compulsive gambler who was always "strapped for cash", showed him "wads of cash" just before Christmas 1971, weeks after the Cooper hijacking. He speculated that Gossett gambled the money away in Las Vegas. In 1988, Gossett changed his name to "Wolfgang" and became a Roman Catholic priest, which some interpreted as an effort to disguise his identity.  The FBI has no direct evidence implicating Gossett and cannot even reliably place him in the Pacific Northwest at the time of the hijacking.  Richard McCoy, Jr. McCoy was an Army veteran who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, first as a demolition expert, and later, with the Green Berets as a helicopter pilot.  On April 7, 1972, McCoy staged the best-known of the so-called "copycat" hijackings. He boarded United Airlines' Flight 855 (a Boeing 727 with rear stairs) in Denver, Colorado, brandishing what later proved to be a paperweight resembling a hand grenade and an unloaded handgun, he demanded four parachutes and $500,000.  After delivery of the money and parachutes at San Francisco International Airport, McCoy ordered the aircraft back into the sky and bailed out over Provo, Utah, leaving behind his handwritten hijacking instructions and his fingerprints on a magazine he was reading.  He was arrested on April 9 with the ransom cash in his possession, and after trial and conviction, received a 45-year sentence. Two years later he escaped from Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary with several accomplices by crashing a garbage truck through the main gate. Tracked down three months later in Virginia Beach, McCoy was killed in a shootout with FBI agents. The FBI agent who killed McCoy said "When I shot Richard McCoy, I shot D. B. Cooper at the same time." Although there is no reasonable doubt that McCoy committed the Denver hijacking, the FBI does not consider him a suspect in the Cooper case because of mismatches in age and description; also he had a level of skydiving skill well above that thought to be possessed by the hijacker; and they also had evidence that McCoy was in Las Vegas on the day of the Portland hijacking, and at home in Utah the day after, having Thanksgiving with his family. Walter R. Reca Walter R. Reca was a Michigan-native, a military veteran and original member of the Michigan Parachute Team. He was proposed as a suspect by his friend Carl Laurin, a former commercial airline pilot and expert parachuter himself, at a press conference on May 17, 2018. In 2008, Reca confessed to being D.B. Cooper to Laurin via a recorded phone call. In July 2018, Principia Media released a four-part documentary detailing their investigation. Reca gave Laurin permission in a notarized letter to share his story after he passed away in 2014, at age 80. He also allowed Laurin to tape their phone conversations about the crime over a six-week period in late 2008.  In the over three hours of recordings, Reca gave new details about the hijacking that the public had not heard before. He also confessed to his niece, Lisa Story. Using his years of training to determine the location of the jump, Laurin concluded that D.B. Cooper landed near Cle Elum, Washington. According to written testimony, Jeff Osiadacz, a Cle Elum, Washington native, was driving his dump truck near Cle Elum the night of November 24, 1971, when he saw a man walking down the side of the road in the inclement weather. He assumed the man's car had broken down and was walking to get assistance.  However, he did not have room in his truck to pick him up. He continued toward his destination, the Teanaway Junction Café just outside of Cle Elum. After ordering coffee, the man from the side of the road also entered the café looking like a "drowned rat", according to Osiadacz.  The man sat next to him and asked if he would be able to give his friend directions if he called him on the phone. Osiadacz agreed to this and spoke with the man's friend, giving him directions to the cafe. Shortly after that, Osiadacz left for the Grange Hall to play in a band. The man offered to pay for his coffee, and the two amicably parted. Laurin began his search for the witness, after Reca described the landscape he saw while on his way to the drop zone: two bridges, some distinct lights; and his description of the exterior and interior of the café, as well as his encounter with Osiadacz. He described Osiadacz in detail, recalling that he was wearing western gear and had a guitar case. He dubbed him "Cowboy". Laurin consulted a map to find these particular landmarks and began making phone calls about the "Cowboy who had driven a dump truck." Laurin was put in contact with Osiadacz, who recalled meeting a man that night, described what he was wearing and what he looked like, and confirmed his identity as Reca after seeing a photo Laurin sent him.  In addition to the taped confession, Laurin also has a confession written by Reca and long underwear allegedly worn by Reca under his black pants during the hijacking. In 2016, Laurin took the information to publisher Principia Media, who consulted with Joe Koenig, a certified fraud examiner and forensic linguist with 45 years of investigative experience. He evaluated all documents, including passports, identification cards, photographs, and newspaper clippings.  Koenig found no evidence of tampering or manipulation and deemed all documentation authentic. After comparing Laurin's research to the available FBI records, he found no discrepancies that eliminated Reca as a suspect. He also thought it particularly significant that Osiadacz's statement of events on the night of November 24, 1971 was identical to the account that Reca made five years earlier. Koenig publicly stated at the Principia Media press conference on May 17, 2018 that he believes that Walter R. Reca was D.B. Cooper. Duane Weber Duane L. Weber was a World War II Army veteran who served time in at least six prisons from 1945 to 1968 for burglary and forgery. He was proposed as a suspect by his widow, based primarily on a deathbed confession: Three days before he died in 1995, Weber told his wife, "I am Dan Cooper."  The name meant nothing to her, she said; but months later, a friend told her of its significance in the hijacking. She went to her local library to research D.B. Cooper, found Max Gunther's book, and discovered notations in the margins in her husband's handwriting. She then recalled, in retrospect, that Weber once had a nightmare during which he talked in his sleep about jumping from a plane, leaving his fingerprints on the "aft stairs". He also reportedly told her that an old knee injury had been incurred by "jumping out of a plane". Like the hijacker, Weber drank bourbon and chain smoked.  Other circumstantial evidence included a 1979 trip to Seattle and the Columbia River, during which Weber took a walk alone along the river bank in the Tina Bar area; four months later Brian Ingram made his ransom cash discovery in the same area. The FBI eliminated Weber as an active suspect in July 1998 when his fingerprints did not match any of those processed in the hijacked plane, and no other direct evidence could be found to implicate him. Later, his DNA also failed to match the samples recovered from Cooper's tie, though the bureau has since conceded that they cannot be certain that the organic material on the tie came from Cooper.

In 2017, Air Canada Flight 759 came terrifyingly close to causing one of the worst aviation disasters ever at San Francisco International Airport. The plane was supposed to land on a clear runway but instead started descending onto a taxiway where four fully loaded planes were waiting to take off. The pilots mistook the taxiway for the runway in the dark, coming within 14 feet of hitting another plane. A quick-thinking air traffic controller yelled for the Air Canada pilots to abort their landing at the last second. The plane pulled up just in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic pile-up that could've affected hundreds of lives. Experts later said it was sheer luck and sharp reactions that prevented tragedy that night. Episode Notes Airports worldwide are investing large amounts in tech upgrades for a projected huge increase in passenger traffic. Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes profiles five U.S. airports making upgrades. JFK Airport shared plans earlier this year for its new terminal 6, which will include digital concierge services as well as a self check-in and bag drop. The airport said its new terminal 1 would feature a state-of-the-art baggage handling system. San Francisco International Airport has started working on a $2.6 billion project to modernize terminal 3, which will include automated bag drop stations and new security checkpoints.  And Pittsburgh International Airport is building a new terminal with more streamlined ticketing stations and baggage claim systems.  Next, Qantas unveiled details about its all-new aircraft on Thursday. Airlines Editor Gordon Smith takes a look at the Airbus A321XLR, which the Australian carrier will start receiving next April.   Qantas says the aircraft — which Airbus has coined the “XLR” or “Xtra Long Range” — will open up direct domestic and short-haul international routes. It's a direct replacement for Qantas' existing Boeing 737s, which are due to leave the carrier's fleet over the next decade. The XLR can fly around 1,500 nautical miles further than the outgoing 737s.  Finally, Edinburgh's city council recently approved a proposal to levy Scotland's first tourist tax. Local officials are worried the tax could make the city less competitive, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.  The “Transient Visitor Levy” will charge guests staying at paid accommodations in Edinburgh 5% per room night. Capped at seven consecutive days, the tax will go into effect in 2026. Edinburgh officials will use the funds for affordable housing, infrastructure and destination management, among other areas.  Habtemariam notes some tourism businesses are concerned the new tax will make the Scottish capital more expensive for tourists. Marc Crothall, chief executive of the Scottish Tourism Alliance, described Edinburgh's new tax as a contentious matter, citing concerns about the possible impact on future bookings.   For more travel stories and deep dives into the latest trends, head to skift.com.  Connect with Skift LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/skift/ X: https://twitter.com/skift Facebook: https://facebook.com/skiftnews Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/skiftnews/ WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaAL375LikgIXmNPYQ0L/ Subscribe to @SkiftNews and never miss an update from the travel industry.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted March 8 at 6:15 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden delivered a defiant argument for a second term in his State of the Union speech Thursday night, lacing into GOP front-runner Donald Trump for espousing “resentment, revenge and retribution” and for jeopardizing freedom at home and abroad. Biden repeatedly delivered broadsides at “my predecessor” without ever mentioning Trump by name. The scrappy tone from Biden was a sharp break from his often humdrum daily appearances and was designed to banish doubts about whether the 81-year-old is still up to the job. For 68 minutes, Biden goaded Republicans over their policies, invited call-and-response banter with fellow Democrats on economic issues, taxes and healthcare and seemed to relish the fight. There are concerns in both New York City and Philadelphia after recent violence on subways and city buses. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A United Airlines jetliner that lost a tire on takeoff has made a safe emergency landing in Los Angeles. Flight 35 left San Francisco and was bound for Osaka, Japan, on Thursday. United says there were 235 passengers and a crew of 14 on the plane. United says the plane is designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires. Video shows the plane losing one of the six tires on its left-side main landing gear assembly seconds after takeout. The tire smashed into a car in an employee parking lot at San Francisco International Airport. WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s economy likely produced another month of healthy hiring in February, once again brushing aside the effects of high interest rates with unexpected ease. When the Labor Department issues the monthly jobs report Friday, economists predict it will show that employers added a solid 200,000 jobs in February. Though that would be down from the blockbuster gains in December (333,000) and January (353,000), it would still be plenty fast enough to outpace population growth and keep the unemployment rate near a half-century low. rWotD Episode 2451: Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 710 Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Friday, 19 January 2024 is Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 710.Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 710 was a Boeing 737-200 flight between the California cities of Sacramento and Burbank, with a stop in San Francisco, that was hijacked by two Bulgarian nationals on July 5, 1972, shortly after take-off from Sacramento Airport. The hijackers demanded $800,000, two parachutes and to be taken to the Soviet Union. The plane landed at the San Francisco Airport, then took off after 20 minutes and spent the next hour circling while the hijackers waited for the airline to accept their demands. The hijacking ended on the runway at San Francisco International Airport when four agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation stormed the plane killing both hijackers. Passenger E. H. Stanley Carter, a sixty-six-year-old retired railroad conductor from Montreal, was also killed; passengers Leo R. Gormley, a recently retired railroad conductor of Los Angeles, and actor Victor Sen Yung were wounded and survived. These are the first passengers killed or wounded in a hijacking in the United States. The hijackers were identified as 28-year-old Dimitr Alexiev of Hayward, California, and 28-year-old Michael Dimitrov Azmanoff, of unknown residence.Azmanoff, a 28-year-old Bulgarian refugee who had once served as an Army truck driver, boarded the Boeing 737 in San Francisco with his friend, Dimitr Alexiev. As soon as the seat-belt sign was switched off, the hijackers produced pistols and made their demands: $800,000 in small bills, two parachutes, and the navigation charts necessary to get them to Siberia. The plane returned to San Francisco, where the hijackers agreed to take on a new pilot with international experience. As the pilot approached the idling plane, the hijackers forced him to strip down to his underwear, to make sure he wasn’t armed. The pilot, who was an FBI agent in disguise, did so slowly, so that a team of agents armed with shotguns could sneak up on the aircraft; these agents had evaded detection by approaching in a boat in the surrounding bay. The faux pilot was eventually cleared to board; he was followed by his fellow agents, who wildly opened fire in the cabin. Alexiev, who was standing by the cockpit, was killed instantly, but Azmanoff hunkered down in the rear of the plane and conducted a gun battle with the agents. He was killed in the melee, along with Carter, the retired railroad conductor. Two more passengers were injured, including Victor Sen Yung, the San Francisco - born actor who played the popular cook, Hop Sing, on the long-running Western television series Bonanza and the character Jimmy Chan in the popular Charlie Chan series of films starting in 1938.Azmanoff and Alexiev were revealed to have an elaborate scheme in mind, which involved an accomplice named Lubomir Peichev. The pair had planned to jettison two inflatable dummies from the plane, then land at a rural airstrip in British Columbia. Peichev was supposed to meet them there, in a light plane he would hijack; the trio would then head back south across the border, to enjoy their $800,000. Peichev was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the bizarre plot.Over the weekend of June 16–19, 1972, Peichev, Azmanoff and Alexiev traveled by car to Washington state, allegedly in search of gold. During this trip they also traveled to Vancouver and to Hope and Puntzi, two remote landing sites, both over 100 miles from Vancouver. While on this trip, plans were made for Azmanoff and Alexiev to hijack an airplane and to fly it to a remote airport in Canada. There, a fourth person would be waiting with a car ready to take the skyjackers to an apartment hide-out on the outskirts of Vancouver. Peichev was to rent a private plane and meet them at an auxiliary landing strip in case the hijacked plane was unable to land at the preferred airport. The three men returned to San Francisco and, on July 1, 1972, met at the San Francisco International Airport with Illia Shishkoff who agreed to meet Peichev at noon on July 4, at the Vancouver Airport and to rent an apartment in the outskirts of the city. On July 3, Peichev withdrew $1,700 from his bank account and borrowed a gun under the guise of a need to protect himself while hunting for gold. Later the same day, he met with Alexiev and Azmanoff at the San Francisco International Airport. They gave him a plane ticket to Seattle and told him to take a bus to Vancouver. After meeting Shishkoff in Vancouver, Peichev rented two cars and traveled with Shishkoff to Hope Airport, approximately 100 miles, and returned to Vancouver. The following day, July 5, Peichev rented a private plane and hired a pilot to fly him to Bella Coola and then to Anaheim Lake. While at Anaheim Lake, Peichev learned by radio that the hijack attempt had failed. He proceeded to Puntzi airstrip where he spent the night and then returned to Vancouver. In Vancouver he met Shishkoff and arranged for the return of the rental cars and then returned to San Francisco. On July 5, the same day that Peichev flew to Puntzi airstrip, Azmanoff and Alexiev hijacked the Pacific Southwest Airline flight. After the gunfight, the F. B. I. agents found on the bodies of the hijackers a map of British Columbia, Canada, and a small piece of note paper containing the map coordinates of the Puntzi airstrip.Peichev concedes that he rented a plane and flew to the Puntzi airstrip by prearrangement with Azmanoff and Alexiev, but contends that he was coerced to do so. His statements as reported by the other witnesses belie this contention. Shishkoff testified that when he met Peichev in Vancouver, Peichev was clearly in charge of directing the car rentals, surveying the Hope airport and directing where to hide the cars. Shishkoff also testified that Peichev, after meeting him at the Vancouver Airport following the failure of the hijacking plan, stated: "They are stupid... I'd planned everything so good. They are stupid. They ask for too much money."Peichev argued that the evidence was insufficient to support his conviction of aiding and abetting aircraft piracy. Under count one, Peichev was charged with only aiding and abetting aircraft piracy, not additionally with counseling, commanding, inducing or procuring its commission as is also provided in 18 U. S. C. 2. He conceded for the sake of argument that the evidence was sufficient to show a conspiracy, but argued that the government did not show that he aided and abetted in the perpetration of the crime. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:05 UTC on Friday, 19 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 710 on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Justin Neural.

Conventional wisdom tells us that engineers design, contractors build, and owners pay for and use the facility. However, this strict division of responsibilities has not consistently resulted in the reliable outcomes that a successful project deserves. Is there a solution? Today's guest believes so and he's here to share his thoughts with Sue.In today's episode of The Lead With Trust Show, Sue chats with Geoff Neumayr SE, DBIA, the Chief Development Officer at San Francisco International Airport, and also the immediate past chair of the Design Build Institute of America.During the episode, Sue and Geoff discuss the gap that exists between contractors, designers and owners, and the effect that gap can have on the success or failure of a project, no matter the size. They discuss Geoff's background, including his first job as a newspaper delivery boy, and the innovative solution he devised to deliver the multi-part Sunday paper in an incredibly hilly area - an early example of engineering a solution to a unique problem. They explore the 'adversarial' relationship that the construction industry has found itself in, both in reality and in public perception. The Sperrin Doctrine is discussed - that is, a legal principle that holds that when a contractor follows the plans and specifications furnished by the owner, and those plans and specifications turn out to be defective or insufficient, the contractor is not liable to the owner for any loss or damage resulting from the defective plans and specifications.Geoff also talks about the very real, 100-year old culture issue that exists in the industry, as well his thoughts on the various ways it can be addressed and/or mitigated.Join Sue and Geoff for this fascinating discussion around building and maintaining a high-trust environment in an industry where trust is paramount. If you have any questions or suggestions for Sue, feel free to reach out via email.Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:Geoff's first job as a newspaper delivery boy, and how he 'engineered' a solution to a unique problem. The 'adversarial' relationship that the construction industry has found itself in, both in reality and in public perception. The 100-year-old culture issue that exists within the industry, and some advice on ways it can be addressed and/or mitigated. And so much more...Resources:Sudyco websiteLead with Trust NewsletterSue's Email: suedyer@sudyco.comGeoff's Email: Geoff.Neumayr@flysfo.comDisclaimer: The views of our guest are their views. Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) Ukraine: Russia planning sham referendum in occupied regions Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of planning to "falsify" an independence referendum in the partly occupied southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. In a video message, Zelenskyy urged residents of these areas not to provide any personal information, such as their passport numbers, to Russian forces. Zelenskyy has also said the devastated port city of Mariupol "continues to resist" despite Russian claims to have captured it. *) Korean leaders exchange friendly letters despite rising tensions North Korea's Kim Jong-un has thanked the South's outgoing president Moon Jae-in for his efforts to improve inter-Korean relations. In a letter, Kim has said his "historic" summits with Moon gave the people "hope for the future", according to Pyongyang's official KCNA news agency. Moon told Kim that together they have made a "clear step" in "changing the fate of the Korean peninsula", Seoul's presidential Blue House has confirmed. They have agreed that ties would improve if both sides "make tireless efforts with hope", despite "the difficult situation so far". *) UK lawmakers back probe into PM Boris Johnson's alleged lies British lawmakers have ordered a parliamentary probe into Prime Minister Boris Johnson for allegedly lying about whether he flouted Covid-19 curbs by attending gatherings. The move means Parliament's Committee of Privileges will investigate whether Johnson knowingly misled Parliament. Johnson was fined by police last week for attending his own birthday party in his office in June 2020, when people in Britain were barred from meeting up with friends and family. He has apologised, but denies knowingly breaking the rules. *) Deaths after Daesh-claimed blasts rock Afghan cities At least 16 people have been killed in bomb blasts in two Afghan cities. The attacks were claimed by the Daesh terror group. Twelve worshippers have been killed in a blast at a Shia mosque in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Fifty-eight people were wounded in the incident. In a separate blast in Kunduz, at least four people have been killed and 18 others wounded. Taliban authorities have vowed to punish those responsible for the bloodshed. Daesh has claimed both the attacks. *) Phone video shows Mike Tyson hitting passenger on US plane Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has been recorded on video punching a fellow first-class passenger aboard a plane at San Francisco International Airport. The video shows Tyson leaning over the back of his seat and repeatedly striking the unidentified man. Authorities are investigating the incident. Tyson was initially friendly to the passenger and his friend, but reacted after the man "wouldn't stop provoking" him, the TMZ entertainment website has said. The decision came with two runners on, two out and the Tigers clinging to a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Austin Meadows blooped a two-run double to put Detroit ahead by three in a 3-0 shutout of New York. Former Yankee Michael Pineda picked up his first win as a Tiger, yielding three hits over five innings. Robbie Grossman doubled home Detroit’s first run off hard-luck loser David Mongomery, who allowed just two other hits while becoming the first Yankee to throw six innings this year. Guardians 3, White Sox 0 – Naylor, Plesac lead Guardians to sweep of White Sox 6-3 Josh Naylor had two hits and two RBIs, continuing his comeback from a devastating leg injury and helping the Cleveland Guardians complete a series sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-3 victory. The 39-year-old star needs one more hit to become the 33rd major leaguer to reach the milestone and the first from Venezuela to do it. Cabrera is set to face a fellow Venezuelan, Rockies pitcher Antonio Senzatela, in the series opener.
