One Black Voter in Ohio Reflects on Journey from Cotton Fields to Historic Election

(AURN News) — For Shirley Thomas, a registered Democratic voter from Dayton, Ohio, today's presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump carries profound personal significance rooted in her early life experiences in the Jim Crow South.  As a daughter of the South who lived through the Jim Crow era, Thomas reflected on her journey and its influence on her political perspective. "I started working in the fields at four or five, carrying water to the people that were in the cotton fields," Thomas recalled in an interview with American Urban Radio Networks. "I was too young to work, but I did that all the time until I was old enough to pick cotton myself. If we go backwards, all those things are not impossible to happen again." "I couldn't figure it out as a child. I thought maybe the people in Washington don't know, the people that are supposed to represent us don't know what's going on," she told AURN News. James Early Chaney was a 21-year-old Black civil rights activist killed by the KKK in 1964. "All that stuff happened in Mississippi, with Chaney and all of them down there in Philadelphia, all that stuff, I saw all that. It's a terrible memory." Thomas also emphasized the stakes of the election for younger voters, particularly in the Black community. "These are things we will not have any control over with the judicial system because it will not work in our favor if Madam Vice President is not elected," she warned. She also pointed to Trump's appointment of more than 200 federal judges during his presidency, including three Supreme Court justices, and drew parallels to past Supreme Court nominations. Thomas talked about her particular concern about recent judicial decisions affecting voting rights. "America must realize a panel of Donald Trump-appointed judges issued a ruling on October 25 that an election law expert called bonkers," she said, referring to a Mississippi voting case. "How such issues are decided at the High Court in the future could effectively be decided Tuesday.” Despite polls showing Trump leading Harris by 8.8 points in Ohio according to Real Clear Politics averages, Thomas remains steadfast in her message about the importance of voting on Election Day, particularly to those who feel their votes don't matter and to young people. As voters head to the polls, Thomas urged them to ignore distractions and focus on what matters. "Please don't watch that foolishness on social media. Don't pay any attention. How dare you allow somebody else to tell you what's going on in your home," she said. "Vote your conscience. And if you still have doubt, pray on it." For Thomas, who witnessed the civil rights struggles in Mississippi firsthand, this election represents more than just a political choice – it's about the direction of American democracy itself. "We cannot turn back," Thomas insisted. She also believes that voters shouldn't let polls discourage them from participating. "You never know until it happens, and if you don't get out there and vote, you're not going to know what happened," Thomas said. "I look at the polls, but you can't trust the polls to me. So you shouldn't get discouraged and not vote because of the polls, because if you don't vote, they could very well be true." "I think our young people need more civics. I think they need to be taught the educational process, the electoral process, they need to know the importance of their vote," Thomas said. "You have to vote your pocketbook. You vote for a person that has been in your shoes, a person similar to you. A billionaire wouldn't dare know." Thomas's final message to voters was clear: "Vote everything that affects them, what will make their life better, what is important to you, and whomever you feel that has your best interests at heart. That's who you should vote for." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

DALLAS, TX (AURN News) - A millennial minister's podcast is making waves across generations, inspiring women to overcome life's challenges through the power of shared testimonies. Teara Randall, 35, founded "Women Who Rise" in May 2022 at the age of 33. The podcast, which has amassed nearly 6,500 followers on Facebook, features real-life stories of women who have triumphed over obstacles ranging from depression and divorce to illness and poverty. "The goal is simply to share our testimony and help them to rise so," Randall explained in a recent interview with American Urban Radio Networks. "Whatever circumstance they're in, whatever life has hit them with, whatever they feel like they can't rise from." Randall, a licensed minister since 2019, says she was divinely inspired to start the podcast while seeking ways to expand her ministry. "God laid it on my heart. He was like, you can help women rise," she recounted. The Houston native believes the podcast's success stems from its authenticity. "They're tired of fake, they're tired of gimmicks, games. They're tired of lies," Randall said of her audience. "People lying to them and they're looking for something real." Surprisingly, the podcast has attracted a growing male viewership and reaches listeners in multiple countries. Randall expressed shock at its broad appeal, saying, "I never thought in a million years that...we're almost at 6,500 followers." Looking ahead, Randall hopes to expand "Women Who Rise" beyond its online presence. Her vision includes establishing a global foundation to provide tangible assistance to women in shelters and communities, offering not just material support but also spiritual encouragement. Randall's own journey of overcoming suicidal thoughts lends credibility to her message. "My testimony needs to be a testament to somebody else that you can rise from anything," she affirmed. "Women Who Rise" recently returned with new episodes this month, promising "more testimonies, more faith, more power, more encouragement, more victory reports to share to help somebody else rise." As the podcast continues to grow, Randall remains focused on its core message: "You can rise with the help of the Lord, and through Jesus Christ, you can rise," she said. DALLAS (AURN News) - Tony Evans, the prominent pastor, author, and the first African American to earn a doctoral degree from Dallas Theological Seminary, has stepped down from the Dallas-area megachurch he founded over 40 years ago after admitting to a past moral failing. In a statement issued last Sunday and posted on the website of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church, Evans acknowledged committing an unspecified sin "a number of years ago" that fell short of the biblical standards he had preached. "When we fall short of that standard due to sin, we are required to repent and restore our relationship with God," Evans said in the statement. "I am, therefore, required to apply the same biblical standard of repentance and restoration to myself that I have applied to others." Evans said he has shared the matter with his wife, children, and church elders "and they have lovingly placed their arms of grace around me." No other details were provided. The church's website stated that interim leadership would be announced in the coming days, under the oversight of executive pastor Bobby Gibson and the elders. One of the most prominent African American evangelical leaders, Evans recently married his second wife in a private ceremony. In a 2022 interview with the American Urban Radio Networks, Evans reflected on the historic role of Black churches as community hubs. "The Black church historically was the center of life for the Black world...Not just religious life, it was the center of all of life," he said. "So we shouldn't be surprised that out of the Black church came our doctors, our lawyers, our teachers, our entertainment, our politicians, and on and on and on and on." He takes us back to his Pittsburgh days when he was working in radio and the station had just hired a new Program Director. Usually, when that happens the new director will clean house and bring in their own team - Jay says that the good ones listen to their current team to assess their talents before making any changes. This particular director didn’t like the way that Jay did the news and told Jay that he needed to make changes. Jay took that advice, critically listened to himself and realized that he wasn’t as good as he could have been. He made the necessary changes, which made him better and allowed him to keep his job. He says his goal is to be better tomorrow than he was today - despite knowing that he’ll never have a perfect show, he says that he’s still going to chase it. [9:46] Personal Truth: Jay’s relationships have played a key role in his life. He talks to us a bit about the key ingredient to his long, happy marriage, his close relationship with his father and how he’s used his relationships as points of clarity. Jay gleaned his personal truth from his family’s experience with alcoholism. He grew up watching alcohol take a toll on some of the strongest people he knows, a result he does not drink. He says that he saw what it did to them and who is he to think that he could win that fight? He was also heavily influenced by his family’s strong work ethic - I loved hearing about how the family had to stop his 97-year-old uncle from getting on the tractor![14:47]Say What You Need to Say: Jay is an eloquent storyteller; a communicator at heart. I asked him what the qualities of a good communicator are and how they translate to personal life? He says that you have to be willing to relate. Jay says what he does isn’t difficult, he just puts himself in a position to do it. In order for him to tell his stories, he has to be in that position to do so; no matter how frightening it may have been, he felt that had something that others should know, so he put himself in front of a microphone. Jay says that if you have something to say, and you’re the only source, you have to speak up - it’s not a fear that you can succumb to. In spite of the systematic attacks journalists of color—and in particular, black women journalists— receive from government officials and the President himself, they have a responsibility to report for their communities.Maria and Julio are joined by two journalists who live this reality in the briefing room: April Ryan with American Urban Radio Networks and CNN political analyst, and NPR’s White House correspondent Ayesha Rascoe. They talk about the behind-the-scenes of covering the Trump administration from within the White House walls.ITT Staff Picks:Why it matters to have journalists of color in the White House briefing room, via The Washington Post. The Intercept sheds light into the complex legacy of George H. April Ryan is hardly a rookie. Having covered the past four presidential administrations as the White House Bureau Chief for American Urban Radio Networks, Ryan’s reporting instincts have found new resonance in the Trump era. She has been personally attacked by the president and singled out by his senior staff on a number of occasions, so we wanted to know: How does she keep her cool and stay focused on her work? The veteran correspondent sat down with Daniella and Ed this week to discuss how being one of the most prominent black, female White House reporters has changed under this administration; why she interviewed Steve Bannon; why she would interview David Duke; and why she’s a winner through it all.

Journalist April Ryan has built her career reporting from the White House, where she has covered Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and now Donald Trump for over 20 years. The correspondent and Washington bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks joined “Salon Talks” to set the record straight on her journalism career, which she says is under attack by the Trump administration.  Ryan says Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Trump have changed the White House’s historic relationship with the press. “They don't want us knowing information. They don't wanna be transparent. There used to be a friendly adversarial relationship with the White House. Now, it's adversarial.” -- About “Salon Talks” Hosted by Salon journalists, “Salon Talks” episodes offer a fresh take on the long-form interview format, and a much-needed break from the partisan political talking heads that have come to dominate the genre. “Salon Talks” is a destination for information through conversation. Her new book is both a reporter’s inside view of the unconventional protocol in the Trump White House, with all the Tweets, policy reversals, and sudden personnel changes, and an intimate look at what it’s like to be targeted by Trump, who has repeatedly responded to Ryan’s serious questions about urgent issues with shaming and insults. April Ryan has covered the news for decades, but it wasn’t until recently that she became part of it. April has been White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks for 20 years, covering the Clinton, Bush, Obama and now Trump administrations, and she contributes to CNN as a political analyst. You might know April from one of her notable interactions this year, which include an exchange with President Donald J. Trump in which he asked her whether the Congressional Black Caucus were her "friends" and whether she could set up a meeting with them, and also an exchange with former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, in which he told April to “stop shaking” her head as he answered a question from her. That exchange with Spicer, along with comments Bill O’Reilly made about Rep. Maxine Waters’ hair, helped fuel a #BlackWomenAtWork hashtag on Twitter and in part thrust April into the spotlight. April has written two books, “The Presidency in Black and White: My Up‑Close View of Three Presidents and Race in America” and “At Mama's Knee: Mothers and Race in Black and White,” and she was named 2017 journalist of the year by the National Association of Black Journalists. She talked about specialty media, how the national conversation around race has evolved and whether her role has changed in covering Trump’s administration.
