Amy Crawford's life is evidence that to become a spark for good we must first recognize that in the face of things that seem impossible, we can always start by doing something. In her nearly four decades working as an educator, Amy has joyfully guided the children in her classroom to not only enjoy a subject, but to recognize the value of their lives. She savored being an educator and the chance to encourage kids. And yet, Amy realized it wasn't just the children in her classroom that needed to be inspired, but also the teachers who taught them. Let me explain.

12 years ago, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome knocked Amy Crawford off her feet. It was a major curveball that changed everything in her life. She had to leave her corporate career and start over at 40.  But as she healed, she discovered a healthy, holistic, and joy-seeking lifestyle that there was no turning back from. Amy started to learn about whole foods, mindfulness, and how to conquer her self-doubt and limiting beliefs. She qualified as a health coach, hypnotherapist, EFT and CTC therapist, and supported women and children for over a decade in her therapy practice. Fast forward 10 years, Amy started an eCommerce business, The Holistic Ingredient selling her own marine collagen, greens and maca blends and a curated range of holistic lifestyle products. In this episode Amy shares the journey from starting an Instagram account and blog in the early days, sharing food photos before it was cool, being an early influencer for other brands and how she then transitioned into product manufacturing and curating a store of other people's products that aligned with her lifestyle.  Amy enrolled in the eComm Ignitor program in June 2022 and has since increased her website conversion rate from 0.5% to over 2%, increased her average order value by over 25% and grown her revenue by 500%. Amy shares what is working right now in her business and what she does to drive growth in her sales.   Episode Highlights: Amy talks about how the Holistic Ingredient started. Stede Bonnet lived a life of luxury in Barbados, inheriting from his father an over 400-acre sugarcane plantation, along with 94 slaves. But in late 1716, when he was 29 years old, Bonnet decided to leave behind his plantation, his wife, and his three surviving children, all under the age of 5, to become a pirate, despite having no experience even captaining a ship. As Captain Charles Johnson put it in A General History of the Pyrates: “He had the least Temptation of any Man to follow such a Course of Life, from the Condition of his Circumstances,” blaming it on a “Disorder in his Mind.” So why did Bonnet leave behind his privileged life, and would he have made the choice again if he knew how it would turn out? Joining me in this episode to help us understand more about Stede Bonnet and his possible motivations is freelance historian Jeremy R. Moss, author of The Life and Tryals of the Gentleman Pirate, Major Stede Bonnet. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode audio is “Oh, Better Far To Live And Die,” from The Pirates Of Penzance, written by Gilbert & Sullivan and performed by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1959, available via the Internet Archive. The episode image is: “Print engraving of Stede Bonnet in Charles Johnson's A General History of the Pyrates,” Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.  The HBO Show loosely based on the life of Stede Bonnet that we reference in the episode is Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins and starring Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet and Taika Wititi as Blackbeard. When you were a teenager, where did you go to hang out with friends? For many of us, the first places we think of are school (and school activities), the mall, arcades and movie theaters, parks, rec centers, restaurants, and coffee shops. There’s a good chance that whatever came to mind for you just now isn’t currently available to teenagers. Only 35% of K-12 students are daily attending school in-person. Education has moved online and school activities are canceled. Many malls, arcades, restaurants, theaters, and rec centers are closed altogether, have strict occupancy limits, or are open by appointment only. The parks may be open but many towns and cities conspire against groups of teenagers lingering too long in parks, paranoid they are up to no good. It’s been said that cities are built with an “anti-teen bias.” As a result, communities that offered few options for teenagers before the pandemic have even fewer options today. This is more than mere inconvenience for teens and their families, as Amy Crawford describes in a recent article in CityLab. “Eight months into the pandemic,” Crawford writes, “life under coronavirus restrictions has proven especially hard on teens, who, despite being at lower risk from the virus itself, have fewer opportunities to be with their peers than perhaps any other demographic.“ Crawford quotes Tamar Mendelson, director of the Center for Adolescent Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health: Isolation is a big issue for young people right now...Adolescence is a time of incredible growth and development. A big piece of that is developing more of a social identity, and that’s getting disrupted a lot during Covid. Young people are resilient, and they’re adept at technology, but it’s a hard adjustment. Crawford’s article is the inspiration for this week’s episode of Upzoned, with host Abby Kinney, an urban planner in Kansas City, and regular co-host Chuck Marohn, the founder and president of Strong Towns. Abby and Chuck discuss the challenges facing teens in cities largely not built with them in mind, the impacts of social isolation on adolescents, and why we, as a culture, must not overlook the deep effect the pandemic is having on teenagers. This isn’t merely an academic discussion, as Chuck describes the sacrifices his own teenage children have been asked to make during the pandemic. Then in the Downzone, Chuck talks about his annual ritual of listening to novels while baking Christmas cookies. And Abby recommends a book that was recommended to her by Joe Minicozzi of Urban3: Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics, by Richard Thaler.   Additional Show Notes “There’s No Room for Teens in the Pandemic City,” by Amy Crawford Abby Kinney (Twitter) Charles Marohn (Twitter) Gould Evans Studio for City Design Theme Music by Kemet the Phantom (Soundcloud) Related content from Strong Towns on building cities for people of all ages: “The Isolation of Aging in an Auto-Oriented Place,” by Sara Joy Proppe “The Next Baby Boom: Affordable Urban Lifestyles for Millennials with Children,” by Jennifer Griffin “To build a strong town, get the kids involved,” by Jonathan Holth “The Livability of a Multi-Generational Neighborhood,” by Daniel Herriges “What makes a home truly work for people of all ages and abilities?” by Rachel Quednau “Want to Start a Local Revolution? Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our “Monday Moment” segments. Today I share a story of one of my heroes, Amy Crawford. Amy is a 5th-grade teacher who has a profound way of elevating the kids in her classroom and inspiring others to recognize the meaning and power within their work. Cleaning her classroom before leaving for the weekend, Amy found a remarkable poem that would soon change her life. This poem was written by one of her troublesome students. I Am The Piece That Never Fits I am the piece that never fits. I wonder why people hate me for who I am I hear the cry of loneliness that comes from me I see my sad, strange, different self in the mirror I want someone on my side I am the piece that never fits. I pretend that words can never hurt me I feel the urge to run away from myself I touch the wet tear from my eye-rolling down my face I worry my future will be me, myself, and I I cry because I am the cheese; everyone is the mouse I am the piece that never fits. I understand that no one likes me I say that there is no place for people like me in the world I dream of a place where I actually fit in I try to make new friends, And I hope to, but still I am the piece that never fit. In time, with love, with grace, with intentional focus, by surrounding him with supportive friends and introducing him to new mentors, the little author of the poem began to fit in. And it all began with one person. One person. Today, he’s a college graduate, gainfully employed, happily married, and passionate about life. Without a doubt, he most certainly fits. If you're looking to start making a difference, certainly start at home. I also encourage you to become involved with an organization that changed my family's lives: Big Brothers Big Sisters. This week for Kiss My Arts we’ve gone back to the future with the school children of St. Hugh’s National School in Dowra and their recently published history of Ballinaglera Parish ‘Fire on the Mountain’ which was recently launched by Brian Dobson. I speak to school principal Padraig Kenny about the school’s second publication after the success of their first effort ‘Scrapbook of Regret’ featuring the regrets of 150 legends of gaelic football. This book is considerably more local and special to the children and their own family and community history came to the fore for some of them during the research and compilation of this compendium. Daithi McGrail and Orla Ryan share the story of the ‘Sons of the Grabber’ about ‘The Grabber’ Brady who because of a dispute over land was boycotted for basic essentials in shops across Dowra, Ballinagleragh, Drumshanbo and Drumkeerin. When he sent his sons to Dromahair under the cloak of night to get supplies, a mob met the returning boys in Drumkeerin and upended their carts to uphold the boycott. Despite three attempts no local jury every convicted the mob. Daniel Gilrane, Jamie McTiernan and Emily Woods give us the details behind the disappearance of two young adventurers Kenneth Reed and William Anderson who set off to kayak the River Shannon but ignored the weather warnings of the locals they met and met their demise on the ‘Wicked Lake’ of Lough Allen. Amy Crawford, Cora Taggart, Emma Rose & Shane Lowe tell us about an amazing woman, Helen Leonard Kerrigan, who after emigrating to America, found herself serving as US Army nurse in World War One in both Serbia and France, being recognised by both Serbia and France for her services before returning to the USA where she spent her days until her death in 1950. Shane Lowe, Darragh McGourty and Mona Lowe have picked their favourite story as the tale of Charles McMorrow, a local smuggler, who after being convicted, fined and jailed, made a ‘Dash from Court’ in 1937 by swimming across the Shannon in the town and escaping across the Cuilcagh mountains and his freedom. It would be 1979 before he returned to the town after a chance meeting with former Leitrim Observer editor David Walsh who wrote about his exploits. Unfortunately McMorrow passed away within twelve months of this return. The final story from the book that we hear about on the show was presented by Shannon McTiernan, Claire Feeney, Anna McGreal & Sadhbh Gilrane about the Morley Estate and the scandal of the attempt of locals to buy their land from the landlord Albert Edward Parker but found out that the landlords agent had double crossed them and bought the land himself. Another mob descended to fight for the tenants rights and resulted in further court cases which of course given the history of the area is hardly a surprise. I wrap up the show speaking to Mr. Kenny about the book and the work put into it behind the scenes from the staff, the students, parents and board of management. We also discuss the recent award won by the school at the FIS Film Festival. The book “Fire on the Mountain” is available now in most outlets in the area and surrounding towns and also available online at https://www.sainthughs.com/fireonthemountain/
